I nodded and asked the boy who was preparing to put down the violin, "Do you like to play the violin so much?"
"Yes, but I'm so poor that I can't afford it," the boy replied.
"Then, I give this violin to you." The hoy looked at me questioningly, but he picked up the violin. Going out to the living room, he suddenly saw on the wall my huge color photo I performed in the Sydney Opera House. He involuntarily trembled for a moment and ran out without looking back.
I was sure that the boy had understood what happened because no one would decorate the living room with the housekeeper's photo.

The elderly gentleman, who was poor but neatly dressed, accepted the spoon and began to taste one after another of the puddings. "This is quite good. This is not had either, but a little too heavy."
Among the crowd of happy, rich-looking shoppers, the little black figure of the old man seemed pitiful and out of place, and in a burst of kindness, I went up to him and said: "Pardon me, sir, will you do me a favor? Let me purchase you one of these puddings. It would give me such pleasure."

We walked for about an hour, up many steep hills. When we finally reached the market, completely out of breath, all the sellers were closing up. Not to mention that we were both tired and hungry. Priscilla and I argued over the directions. I insisted we turn right, which ended up being another had decision. We climbed up more steep hills, farther and farther away from any area we recognized. We made another right turn onto a random street and Priscilla stopped to check the map. Meanwhile, I looked up at the street sign, Rua da Madalena. I'd heard that name before. We continued a little farther up the street, and I spotted a few people hanging out in a lane. There was something particularly familiar about the scene. I looked closer. There was a small store practically hidden in the lane. It had books in its windows.

Arthur, still carrying the suitcase, turned to look at the bank and walked right into the young woman in front of him.
She looked at the suitcase and then at him. Arthur was surprised. "Why is she looking at me like that?" he thought. "The suitcase! She thinks I’m the bank thief!"

This week, The Lions were playing our main competitors, The Bears, a team whose record this season had been perfect. They hadn’t lost a single game. It would be a tough one. Paul didn’t know he’d soon get the chance that he’d been waiting for.
Suddenly, a player and I crashed into each other. My knee hurt badly. The team gathered around, looking worried. The last quarter was about to begin, and my team was behind by 10 points.
“I don’t think I can play anymore, Coach,” I said quietly as the doctor put an ice pack on my knee.
“No way,” the Coach replied sharply. “We’ve got no more players!”
“What about Paul?” someone suggested.
“Paul?” said the Coach. “He can’t play!”
“Give him a shot, Coach!” I said. “What have we got to lose?”
“That’s right,” another player said. “We’re losing anyway. Let Paul play!”
“Let me try, Coach! I won’t let you down!” Paul said.

It was a Thursday. I was walking to the chemistry rooms when my phone in my left pocket vibrated(震动). I took it out and looked at the shiny screen. As soon as I saw my father’s name on that screen I realized something was not right.
He would not call me in the middle of a school day just to talk. He would want me to focus in school and do well. I answered the phone, and my father sounded worried. He told me to find my brother as soon as possible, walk with him to the school picking-up zone and get in the car with my brother. Our driver would take us back home where my father was.
When I was in the car with my brother my dad called the driver and told him to take us to the hospital. We were going to meet him and my mum there. As soon as my brother and I found about the change in plans, we looked at each other in the eyes. I immediately noticed the fear in brother’s eyes.
To be honest, I was really scared too, probably more than he was. But I did not say anything. We arrived at the hospital. I saw my dad on the phone waiting for us at the entrance. He was smoking. Seeing my dad smoking made me more worried. I had never seen him smoke before. He hated it. As soon as he recognized the white car, he threw the cigarette away. I looked at my brother; he was looking out of the other window. I did not tell him what I just saw. I did not want him to worry.

A Special Appointment
Years ago I moved to Woodland Hills to take a job in a small hospital’s emergency department. No one wanted to work on Christmas Eve, so the shift(轮班)went to me. I kissed my family goodbye and went off to spend the night in the hospital. It was a thankless job.
At 9 pm, the ambulance brought in a man in his 60s who was having a heart attack. His face was pale, and he was frightened. The whole night I did my best to save his life. Mr. Lee, his family and I spent 13 Christmas Eves together. In the later years the staff all knew about the story and would work to give me time with him in the break room, where we spent a half-hour each Christmas Eve.
