Money is what people use to buy things they need or want. A long time ago, people didn’t use money. 26. There is a long and interesting story about this. This was called “bartering (以货易货)”.?

A Helping Hand
Riding her bike home from school, Susan saw her neighbor Mrs. Green on the sidewalk, holding her cat Kitty. “Hi, Mrs. Green,” said Susan. “Where are you going?”
Mrs. Green didn’t answer and she looked a little bit confused. Susan remembered her mom telling her that Mrs. Green had Alzheimer’s disease (阿尔茨海默病). It caused people to become confused and have trouble remembering. Susan realized that Mrs. Green couldn’t remember her way home and decided to help.
“It looks like we might have a storm soon,” she said. “Why don’t I help you get Kitty home?”
Susan extended(伸出) her hand to Mrs. Green and they began walking down the street toward Mrs. Green’s house. As they arrived, Mrs. Green began to smile. “I couldn’t remember my way home,” she said. Susan smiled and walked into the house with her.
When Susan got home, she told her mom what happened. Susan’s mom called Mrs. Green’s daughter. She thanked them and said she would be at her mother’s house in a few minutes. Then Susan’s mom told her a little more about Alzheimer’s disease.
Susan wanted to help Mrs. Green as much as she could. She decided to help Mrs. Green with some housework that might be challenging because of the Alzheimer’s disease.
“I’m proud of you, Susan,” said her mom. “Mrs. Green’s daughter has a job and the children as well, so she’ll probably be happy for your help.” Susan nodded her head and smiled.
