She wanted to paint a picture of the Bay of Naples, but later she suffered from a serious disease called Pneumonia.

She would have one chance in ten to live.
She was counting the leaves outside the windows backward. Because she was terribly ill, and waiting for her last moment to come, that is, she lost the desire for life.

●Johnsy seems to be dying of pneumonia when
the story begins, but it is Mr. Behrman who dies in
the end, while Johnsy survives.
While O.Henry stories' endings are always
surprising, yet not beyond reason, for both ways
are in agreement with the logic of life. Actually, his
style has a great influence on modern American
fiction.
