1. Look at the following and see how they are emphasized.
1. Everyone was so excited about her speech.
It was such an interesting television show.
I really want to see it again.
Actually, the festival in Venice doesn’t just feature Hollywood films.

Notes1:
We can use certain words such as so, such, really and just to show emphasis.
2. We did want to have a festival .
Do tell us a little about the festival you represent.
I do hope you have a merry Christmas.
He does know the place well.
Notes2: add the auxiliary do, does or did before the verb.
do/ does/ did +V
1. 我的确相信他是老实人。
I do believe that he is an honest man.
2. 她确实喜欢英语。
She does like English.
3. 他们昨天的确去看过你,但没见到你。
They did go to see you yesterday, but
failed to meet you.
Translate the following with emphasis.
3. Look at the following sentence and pay attention to how it is emphasized.
It was Robert that/ who helped us finish the task.
It was in 1981 that Robert changed the focus of the festival.
Notes3: It + be + the part to be emphasized + that clause’.
When the subject we emphasize is a pronoun, we usually use its object form.
e.g. It was me who represented the
Toronto International Film Festival
last year.
It was she (her) who told the police.
It was you who we were talking about.
Is it the Cannes Film Festival that gives awards mostly to American films?
How often is it that famous actors and
directors come to Toronto?
Who was it that told him what had
happened?
This emphatic structure can also be used in questions.
Pay attention to the difference between attributive clause and emphasis.
It was midnight _____ he came back. It was at midnight ____ he came back.
It was in the street ____I met him yesterday.
It was the street _____ I met him yesterday.

Note4: 如何判断强调句
一个句子,如果将其中的It is/was…that去掉,在不加减任何词语的情况下,语序稍作调整能构成一个完整正确的句子,便可以认定为强调句,否则就不是强调句。

Note5:
We can use the pattern ‘it was not until… that…’ to emphasize time expressions.
e.g. What are you doing in the room?
What on earth are you doing in the room?
When will the train leave?
When exactly will the train leave?
6. We can also use ever, exactly, on earth and in the world in questions.
How did you go there?
How exactly did you go there?
Who will go there with us?
Who on earth will go there with us?
Where have they stayed for the
whole afternoon?
Where ever have they stayed for the
whole afternoon?
Note6: 在问句中,ever、exactly、in the world、on earth 翻译成“究竟,到底”,表强调
