M8U4 Grammar and usage Emphasis
Teaching aims
1. After learning the usage of Emphasis, the students will be able to deal with the exercises about emphasis;
2. After doing some exercises about Emphasis, the students will be able to use them in speaking and writing.
Mary: I have got three tickets for world cup. Here are two tickets for you,
John and Rose.
John: Thank you. I am glad to have got a
ticket for it. It is interesting.
I want to see it again.
Look at the following dialogue:
Rose: It is such an interesting game. I
really want to see it . I
am so glad to have got a ticket
for it. Thank you, Mary.
Compare what John said with what Rose said, and tell why Rose use such, really, so.
The adjective such is used to emphasize an interesting game, While the adverbs really and so are respectively used to emphasize the verb want and the adjective glad.
Rose used them to express her strong feeling about the game — how anxious she wanted to see the game again.
These sentence structure are called
emphasis.
Look at the following sentences. Pay
attention to the differences:
This is the book that you asked me to buy.
This is the just book that you asked me to buy.
I know his phone number.
I do know his phone number.

1. 用形容词very，only，single，such等修饰名词或形容词来加强语气。
That’s the very textbook we used last term．
You are the only person here that can speak Chinese.
Not a single person has been in the shop this morning．
How dare you buy such expensive jewels？

2. 用ever, never, very, just等副词进行强调
Why ever did you do so？
He never said a word the whole day．
You’ve got to be very, very careful．
This is just what I wanted．
3. 用in the world，on earth，at all等介词短语可以表达更强的语气（常用于疑问句）。
Where in the world could he be?
What on earth is going on?
Do you know at all?
4. 用倒装句（也就是将要强调的句子或被强调的部分置于句首）来加强语气。
On the table were some flowers．
Many a time have I climbed that hill．
Only in this way can we solve this problem．
It is I who am wrong.
It is in a small factory that my brother is going to work.

5.用强调句型帮助强调
1. 构成 (structure)
It is/was +强调部分+that (who/whom) +其他成分
强调除谓语以外的句子成分

It is they that/who will have a meeting in the hall tomorrow.
强调宾语
It is a meeting that they will have in the hall tomorrow.
强调地点状语
It is in the hall that they will have a meeting tomorrow.
强调时间状语
It is tomorrow that they will have a meeting in the hall.
2. 强调句型的注意点
It is your father who is wrong this time.
It is his parents who have come to China.
① 主谓一致：被强调部分作主语时，其形式与谓语动词在人称和数上保持一致。

特殊问句：疑问词+is/was +it +that

I didn’t realize what trouble he was in until at that time.
It was not until at that time that I realized what trouble he was in.
⑤ 当强调not … until结构时，必须将
not until连用，后面接肯定式。
The teacher didn’t stop his lesson until the bell rang. (改成强调句）
It was not until the bell rang that the teacher stopped his lesson.
直到他父亲来了男孩才开始做作业。
It was not until his father came that the boy began to do his homework.
