There are strong arguments on space travel, and below you will find a list of many frequently used arguments.
Pros of space travel:
—Space travel has inspired many people to continue improving technology such as inventing Velcro and non-stick frying pans.
—If you look at the total GDP worldwide, space only accounts for a very small percentage of the total budget.
—Better to spend money on our future than on other projects that would have a much lower potential reward.
—If we were to colonize (开拓……成殖民地) another planet, it would reduce the population on Earth, which is already overpopulated. This will result in the survival of our species when our planet can no longer support human life.
—Multinational space stations have helped diplomacy (外交) among multiple nations.
Cons of space travel:
—There is a very large percentage of the earth's oceans we have yet to explore. We should continue exploring the remaining unknown regions of our oceans before continuing to another planet.
—The funding for space exploration comes from the tax payers' pockets. Many do not think that they should be forced into paying for something they oppose.
—The total contribution from space travel is minimal, when considering the total cost.
—We should not be thinking about colonizing the moon, or a planet. It's better to save our existing planet first. If we are to destroy one planet, what is to stop us from repeating the_mistakes on another planet.
—Not only is the cost of manned space missions high, but space travel can have a serious effect on the human body over an extended period of time. The only way to solve it is by using robots, which reduces the human risk factor, and reduces the overall cost.
Overall, most people approve of (赞成) our current exploration methods. In my opinion, these methods should be reviewed to help reduce the cost of launches. I believe the potential of finding resources on other planets will make the cost of several decades of space exploration worthwhile.

Many of New York's fine-dining establishments take part in what is known as Restaurant Week, an event held since 1992 that offers locals and tourists the opportunity to enjoy a more affordable three-course culinary (烹饪的) experience.
For a fixed lunch price of $25, or $38 for dinner, there are 340 restaurants and 28 types of cuisine (菜肴) to choose from through March 6. On any other day of the year, such meals could cost 25 percent to 50 percent more.
One of the pioneers of this event is Tracy Nieporent, restaurant committee chairman for NYC & Company. He said participating restaurants make a smaller profit per meal, but benefit from an increase in overall business. “It's really an honor to get in, and people want to be in,” he said. “It's obviously economically beneficial to the restaurants who participate in the event.”
For waiters, Restaurant Week means extra work. But typically, that translates to higher wages. “The tips get a little higher,” said Jose Miguel Cruz, a waiter at Tribeca Grill. “I would say they increase more than 20 percent.” Cruz, who has served at Tribeca Grill for 25 years, said the effort pays off in other ways. “People enjoy it,” he said. “It also opens—either winter or summer time—another chance to bring more customers.”
Affordability and convenience matter in New York, where the cost of living is high. “Restaurant Week is great because you can try everything you can,” said New York resident Mario Milana. “You have good menus, and usually a wine selection that goes well together.” Another New Yorker, Kim Bible, said Restaurant Week provides “an incentive to go to restaurants when you usually wouldn't go out”.
New York's Restaurant Week model has since been copied in other cities across the nation. It works so well because it provides real value.

The plan: turn Mars into a blue world with streams and green fields, and then fill it with creatures (生物) from the earth.
This idea may sound like something from a science fiction (科幻小说),but it is actually being taken seriously by many researchers. This suggests the future for the “red planet” will be the main topic for discussion at an international conference hosted by NASA (美国宇航局) this week. Leading researchers as well as science fiction writers will attend the event.
“Turning Mars into a little earth has long been a topic in science fiction,” said Dr. Michael Meyer,NASA's senior scientist for astrobiology (太空生物学).“Now,with scientists exploring the reality,we can ask what are the real possibilities of changing Mars.”
Most scientists agree that Mars could be turned into a little earth, although much time and money would be needed to achieve this goal.
But many experts are shocked by the idea.“We are destroying our own world at an unbelievable speed and now we are talking about ruining another planet,” said Paul Murdin from the Institute of Astronomy,Cambridge,UK.
Over the past months, scientists have become increasingly confident. They will find Martian life forms.Europe and America's robot explorers have found proof that water, mixed with soil, exists in large amounts on the planet.

The Sun's Energy
The sun, our singular source of renewable energy, sits at the center of the solar system and gives out energy at an extremely large and relatively constant rate, 24 hours per day, more than 360 days of the year.
If we could harvest the energy coming from just 10 hectares (25 acres) of the surface of the sun, we would have enough to supply the current energy demand of the world. However, there are three important reasons why this cannot be done. First, the earth is displaced from the sun, and since the sun's energy spreads out like light from a candle, only a small amount of the energy leaving an area of the sun reaches an equal area on the earth. Second, the earth turns about its polar axis (极轴), so that any collection device located on the earth's surface can receive the sun's energy for only about one-half of each day. The third and least factor is the condition of the thin shell of atmosphere that surrounds the earth's surface. At best the earth's atmosphere accounts for another 30 percent reduction in the sun's energy. As is widely known, however, the weather conditions can stop all but a minimal amount of solar radiation from reaching the earth's surface for many days in a row.Ⅳ.课外阅读
We find that the moon is about 239,000 miles (384,551 km) away from the earth, and, to within a few thousand miles, its distance always remains the same. Yet a very little observation shows that the moon is not standing till. Its distance from the earth remains the same, but its direction continually changes. We find that it is traveling in a circle—or very nearly a circle—round the earth, going completely round once a month, or, more exactly, once every 27 and 1/3 days. It is our nearest neighbor in space, and like ourselves it is kept tied to the earth by the earth's gravitational pull. Except for the sun, the moon looks the biggest object in the sky. Actually it is one of the smallest, and only looks big because it is so near to us. Its diameter is only 2,160 miles (3,476 km), or a little more than a quarter of the diameter of the earth.
Once a month, or, more exactly, once every 29 and 1/2 days, at the time we call “full moon”, its whole disc looks bright. At other times only part of it appears bright, and we always find that this is the part which faces towards the sun, while the part facing away from the sun appears dark. Artists could make their pictures better if they kept this in mind—only those parts of the moon which are lighted up by the sun are bright. This shows that the moon gives no light of its own. It merely reflects the light of the sun, like a huge mirror hung in the sky.

The discussion about electronic dictionaries has never stopped in the past few years.
An electronic dictionary has lots of advantages, of which the biggest is its convenience. What's more, they can pronounce the words clearly. Last but not least, more and more students can afford them. However, the negative effects are also obvious. To begin with, some students rely too much on them. Despite the fact that it's over a century old, Einstein's theory of general relativity is our current understanding of how gravity operates. In this view, space and time are merged together into a unified framework known as (no surprises here) space-time. This space-time isn't just a fixed stage but bends and flexes in response to the presence of matter and energy. That bending, warping and flexing of space-time then goes on to tell matter how to move. In general relativity, everything from bits of light to speeding bullets to blasting spaceships want to travel in straight lines. But the space-time around them is warped, forcing them all to follow curved trajectories—like trying to cross a mountain pass in a straight line, but following the peaks and valleys of the topography.
What we call “gravity” is then the result of all that warping of space-time, and the fact that moving objects have no choice but to follow the curves and undulations of space-time around it. And like any other flexible surface, space-time doesn't just bend and flex; it also vibrates.
If you stand on a trampoline, you'll bend the trampoline down. If anyone tries to walk on the trampoline near you, they will feel your “gravity” and be forced to follow a curving path. But far enough away from you, they won't even notice your gravitational influence.
