名著阅读(一) 《小公主》《最后一片叶子》

A [2019·镇江二模]
When Sara entered the schoolroom the next morning, everybody looked at her with wide, interested eyes. By that time every pupil—from Lavinia Herbert, who was nearly thirteen and felt quite grown up, to Lottie Legh, who was just four and the baby of the school—had heard a great deal about her. They knew very certainly that she was Miss Minchin's show pupil and was considered a credit to the school(为校争光的人). One or two of them had even caught a glimpse(瞥) of her French maid(女仆), Mariette, who had arrived the evening before. Lavinia had managed to pass Sara's room when the door was open, and had seen Mariette opening a box which had arrived late from some shop.
“It was full of beautiful dresses,” she whispered to her friend Jessie. “I saw her shaking them out. I heard Miss Minchin say to Miss Amelia that her clothes were too good for a child. My mamma says that children should be dressed simply. She has got one of those dresses on now. I saw it when she sat down.”
“She isn't pretty as other pretty people are,” said Jessie, stealing a glance across the room, “but she makes you want to look at her again. She has very long eyelashes, but her eyes are almost green.”
Sara was sitting quietly in her seat, waiting to be told what to do. She had been placed near Miss Minchin's desk. She was not shy or nervous at all by the many pairs of eyes watching her. She was interested and looked back quietly at the children who looked at her. She wondered what they were thinking of, and if they liked Miss Minchin, and if they cared for their lessons, and if any of them had a papa at all like her own. She had had a long talk with Emily about her papa that morning. “He is on the sea now, Emily,” she had said. “We must be very great friends to each other and tell each other things. Emily, look at me. You have the nicest eyes I ever saw—but I wish you could speak.” She was a child full of imagination, and one of her thoughts was that making herself believe that Emily was alive and really heard and understood.

The Last Leaf is a short story written by the USA author O. Henry, one of the most famous short story writers in history. His stories are known for their surprising endings, now called “O. Henry endings”.
In the story of The Last Leaf, Sue and Joanna are two artists living in New York City. Unfortunately, Joanna is ill and will probably die. In the hospital, something touching and unexpected happens. Let's find out more in the following excerpt(节选).
Sue looked out of the window. All she saw was an old yellow and green ivy(常春藤) plant. The half-dead plant had few leaves on it because of the autumn winds.
“There are only five, now,” said Joanna.
“Five what, dear? What are you counting?”
“The ivy leaves,” replied Joanna. “When the last one goes, I'll die. I've known that for two days. Didn't the doctor tell you about it?”
“Joanna, don't say that. Now, eat some soup and I'll finish my picture.”
“I don't want any soup,” said Joanna, looking out of the window. “Now there are only four.”
“Joanna dear, try to sleep. I must ask Mr Berman to come up. I want to draw a picture of him as a poor old farmer.”
Mr Berman, who was over 60 years old, lived downstairs. He was a painter, too, but he never sold anything, and he drank a lot. Sue told him all about what Joanna was saying.
“She can't really think that this will happen! The poor woman!” he cried.

Finally there was only one last leaf on the ivy plant. After a few windy days, the leaf was still there.
“Susie,” said Joanna, “I've been a bad girl. That last leaf is telling me that it was very wrong of me to want to die. Bring me some soup, dear.”
The next day, the doctor said, “She's out of danger. But poor Mr Berman downstairs is dying. There's no hope for him, I'm afraid.”
That afternoon Sue went into Joanna's bedroom.
“Joanna dear, Mr Berman died today. And do you know why? One terrible, cold wet night he took a ladder and some green and yellow paint and he climbed up, and—oh, look at the last ivy leaf on the wall! Why didn't it ever move in the wind? Can't you see? It was Mr Berman's last great picture. He painted it there the night that the last leaf fell.”

B.The doctor said she would die
C.Joanna counted the leaves of the ivy plant
D.Joanna thought when the last ivy leaf went, she would die
2.Why didn't the last ivy leaf fall after a few windy days? ( )
A.Because it was painted on the wall.
B.Because the leaf was green.
C.Because the wind wasn't strong.
D.Because it was tied to the tree.
3.Why did Mr Berman paint an ivy leaf on that wall on a terrible, cold wet night? ( )
A.Because Susie asked him to do so.
B.Because he drank a lot and nobody could stop him.
C.Because he liked the ivy plant and wanted to paint it before he died.
D.Because that night the last ivy leaf fell, he didn't want Joanna to lose hope.
4.From the passage we know that . ( )?
A.Joanna was a bad girl without hope in her life
B.Mr Berman was a very kind, great artist
C.Susie never let Mr Berman know what Joanna said
D.Mr Berman's pictures were so terrible that he couldn't sell them out

(One day, Gulliver was caught in a storm and his ship hit a rock, then damaged. He was washed to the beach by sea wave. He walked and walked to find a city, but he was too tired and felt asleep. When he woke up, he found himself in Lilliput and a lot of tiny people were around him.)
The Emperor spoke in a high voice but I could hear all the words clearly. His followers and all the ladies wore rich and beautiful clothes. The ground where they were standing looked like gold and silver cloth.
His Majesty and I often spoke to each other but neither of us understood a single word. I tried words from many languages—Dutch, French, Spanish, Italian and Latin. No one could understand my words, not even the cleverest of the Emperor's followers.
After about two hours the Emperor left. His wife, children and their servants also went. There were strong guards around me. This was to stop the crowd of people from hurting me.
An officer told the guards to hold six men who made me angry. These men were given to me and I had to choose their punishment. I put five of them in my pocket. Then I pretended(假装) to eat the sixth man.
The poor man screamed terribly. The guards were worried when they saw my knife in my hand. Was I going to cut up the man? But I only cut the binding(捆绑物) round his hands. Then I put him on his feet and let him go. I lifted the other five men out of my pocket and put them gently on the ground too.
The people and the soldiers were very pleased with my great kindness. They told the Emperor about it immediately. The Emperor ordered his men to make a bed for me and they had to join six hundred of their little beds together to make one bed for me.
At the same time the Emperor asked all his advisers for their advice on how to deal with. They were very worried. If my binding was cut, I might be dangerous. I was eating so much food that soon all the people would be very hungry. The farmers could not grow enough food to feed all of us.
The wise men thought that they should kill me. But they would not be able to bury(埋葬) me. My dead body would smell. This might cause much illness all over the country.

It was a week before I saw Captain Nemo again. Every morning, I noticed fresh air coming into the rooms and I knew that the Nautilus had surfaced(浮出水面). I would go out and see the sunrise.
Then I received a note from Captain Nemo. He invited me and my friends to go hunting with him in the forests of Crespo Island. Ned was excited because he thought there he could find a chance to escape. When I saw Captain Nemo the next day, I asked him why he was so interested in Crespo Island. “I thought you preferred the sea to being on land.”
“I do,” replied the Captain. “But these forests are under the sea.” During breakfast, he explained that he had made diving suits(潜水服) that used special air tanks. These tanks would allow us to stay under the water for ten hours. He had also made lights that worked in electric batteries. When Ned realized that we were not going onto land for our hunting trip, he decided not to come at all.
Conseil and I put on our diving suits, and so did Captain Nemo and one of his men. We stepped into a room and closed the door. The room was filled with water, and another door opened. We must go through it, and we were in the sea floor. It was an amazing experience.
We were about ten metres under the water. The light from the sun reached us. Everything looked very colourful. We walked over the fine sand and enjoyed the colours of the shells, fish and seaweed. Conseil and I followed Captain Nemo and his man as they crossed a large grassy area. We were going deeper and deeper. Two hours later, we were a hundred metres under the water. The suits worked very well, and it was easy to walk and breathe.
At one hundred metres deep, we could still see quite well, and Captain Nemo stopped and pointed to some dark shapes. This was the forest. The “trees” in the forest were giant seaweed, and all their branches were vertical(垂直的). We could not stop looking at them. Fish swam around the branches like birds in a forest. Small shrubs(灌木) grew under the large seaweed trees. Some of them had flowers.
We walked through this forest for about an hour, and then we lay down to rest. I was not hungry, but I was very sleepy. We all slept, and when we woke up, we walked further.

名著阅读(三) 《金银岛》《野性的呼唤》

A [2020·原创]
As we walked down the shore, Ben Gunn told his story.“I was alone here for years,” he said. “One day, I found the skeleton(骷髅). I saw it was pointing to a tree. I dug around that tree and found the treasure. I was living in a cave, so I took the treasure to the cave. This morning, when Long John Silver and his men came to look for the treasure, I showed myself to one of them. He thought I was a ghost.” Ben laughed. “He ran off, and this gave me time to get back to the squire(乡绅) and the doctor. They were waiting at the cave.”
“Now I know,” I said to the doctor, “why you gave the map to Silver.”
“It was useless by then,” the doctor said. “There was no buried treasure. Ben Gunn had it. My plan was to get Long John Silver and his men away from the stockade(木寨). We could then get some stores from it.”
When we got back to the cave, the squire was waiting for us.
“Three of the mutineers(反叛者) got away,” the doctor told him. “But if we hurry, we can get to the boat before them. They ran back to the stockade on the other side of the island. We are nearer to the boat than they are.”
I went into the cave. The captain was lying inside it next to the treasure—a pile of gold coins.
“Hello, Jim,” he said. “I am pleased to see you. But I don't think you or I will be going to see again.”
That night, the captain died. We carried the treasure down to the boat. We lit a fire on the shore and had a fine meal together. We were not afraid of the three mutineers. We had pistols(手枪). They had none. There were more of us than of them.
The next morning, we went in the boat towards the Hispaniola. We didn't care about the three men. We left them on the island.
I will not tell you about the journey home. Nothing important happened. But as soon as we got to Bristol, Long John Silver ran away. He took some of the gold with him. None of us cared. We were pleased to see the back of him. We each shared the treasure and used it in a different way.

Buck did not read the newspapers, or he would know that trouble was coming.
In fact, trouble was on its way for every strong dog with warm long hair. This was because men, going through the Arctic(北极的) darkness, had discovered a yellow metal—gold. And because shipping and transportation(运输) companies were advertising the discovery, thousands of men were rushing into the Northland. These men wanted heavy dogs, with strong muscles(肌肉) for working and thick coats to protect them from the cold.
Buck lived at Judge Miller's house in the sunny-kissed Santa Clara Valley. There were big stables(马厩), long grape fields, fruit gardens and a big swimming pool. Buck ruled over the whole kingdom. Here he was born and here he had lived the four years of his life. He protected the Judge's sons and daughters at long midnight or early morning walks. On cold winter nights he lay at the Judge's feet in front of the warm library fire. He was king—king over everything, crawled(爬行的), walked, or flew at Judge Miller's place, including humans.
Buck was this kind of dog in the autumn of 1897, when the discovery of gold in the Klondike pulled men from all over the world into the frozen North. But Buck did not read the newspapers. He did not know that Manuel, one of gardener's helpers, was not to be trusted. Manuel loved to gamble(赌博). He believed he could win but he was doomed to failure.
On the night of Manuel's betrayal(背叛), no one saw him and Buck went off through the fields. Buck imagined it to be a relaxing walk. They arrived at a little train. A man talked with Manuel and money passed between them. Manuel tied a piece of thick rope around Buck's neck. Buck accepted it quietly. To be sure, it was unwanted, but Buck had learned to trust men he knew.
However, when the ends of the rope were placed in the stranger's hands, he barked. Then the rope tightened(收紧) painfully, his tongue hanging out of his mouth. Then his strength disappeared, his eyes grew dim(浑浊), and he knew nothing when the train pulled up. Two men threw him into the baggage car.
