Trip description
This is an autumn adventure camp in Montana for girls aged from 13 to 15. This camp is an introduction to many things, such as outdoor cooking, campfire (篝火) building, interesting games, road-side dance parties, and camping skills. Of course, you can make a lot of new friends then! During this camp, girls will have lots of fun outside and experience hiking, swimming, and backpacking (背包旅行). All of these will leave the girls an unforgettable memory.
Where to camp
Three nights are spent in tents in public “front country” areas where we have running drinkable water and personal toilets. Girls will learn how to build a campfire on their own and have a chance to cook a meal over it.
Three nights are spent in tents in wild “back country” areas where we will purify (净化) the water of the lake before drinking. Girls will learn and practice basic camping skills such as how to choose a place to camp and how to keep clean outdoors.
Why choose this trip
Attending this camp is a great way to introduce younger girls to the experience of outdoor living and backpacking. Although the camp trip might be challenging for some girls, they will have lots of fun and make friends with those girls having the same interest.

Last spring, I was lucky to be chosen to join in an exchange study program. In my application letter, I was careful to express how much I wanted to see France. My excitement really came through my words. When I knew I would go to France to study for a term (学期), all that I could think about was the fun of foreign travel and making all sorts of new and interesting friends.
The moment I arrived in Paris, I was greeted by a nice French couple who would become my host parents. My whole experience was cheerful and exciting until I received some shocking news from my program coordinator (协调人). One of my host parents’ relatives died. They had to go away for several weeks. That afternoon, I had to move out of one family’s house into another. The exchange coordinator told me I would have a roommate this time and asked whether I could share a bedroom with an English speaker. To avoid speaking my native language, I asked not to be placed with an English-speaking roommate. When I got to my new room, I introduced myself to my new roommate Paolo, a Brazilian, the same age as I, whom I was surprised to find playing one of my favorite CDs! In just a few hours, we knew we would be good friends for the rest of the term.
I left France with many stories, so when people asked me what my favorite part of the trip was, they were always surprised to hear me talk about my Brazilian friend Paolo and our weekdays in class, weeknights in the town, and weekends of exploring France happily. I love how people can seem so different, but end up being so similar. The most valuable lesson I got from studying in France isn’t just to respect the friendly people but to respect all people, for your next best friend could be just a continent away.
( )30. How did the writer feel when he knew he was going to France?
A. Bored. B. Nervous. C. Excited. D. Angry.

D. Because he expected to make some new and interesting friends.
( )32. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A. The writer didn’t want to live with a person who could speak his native language.
B. The writer made friends with Paolo because Paolo gave him many CDs.
C. The writer studied in France for a term.
D. The writer had a great time with his Brazilian friend.

As an old saying goes, “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.” I learned the meaning of this when I studied in Russia a few years ago.
One day I invited some of my Chinese friends to a famous local restaurant in Moscow. My guests and I were excited about visiting Red Square because the food in it was very delicious. We were having a warm chat when the waiter came to us and told us that we were speaking too loudly. We turned our voices lower, but this didn’t last very long. And the waiter came over to us two more times with the same message. How bad an impression we must have left on the local people! I felt sorry about this, even though we tried our best.
In China, it’s common and important for people to make a lively atmosphere (气氛) when eating together. However, in Russia, having a meal in a public place means you must keep your voice low. You need to be polite to others. But it’s common to have difficulty in developing a new habit.
Russians have their own special habits. My Russian friend, Boris always looks around and thinks for a while before leaving home. I asked him why he did this. Boris said, “In Russia, people always spend about a minute going over things in their minds before leaving. So they won’t leave anything necessary behind.”
Finding the differences between cultures is much fun. I’d like to keep my eyes and mind open.
( )34. Why did the writer go to Russia a few years ago?
A. To travel. B. To visit friends. C. To study. D. To work.
( )35. How did they probably feel after they were told not to be too loud two more times?
A. Comfortable. B. Embarrassed. C. Sad. D. Worried.
( )36. What does the writer think of developing a new habit?
A. It’s easy. B. It’s funny. C. It’s stupid. D. It’s hard.
( )37. What does the passage mainly want to tell us?
A. The differences of languages between two countries.
B. The differences of cultures between two countries.
C. The differences of food between two countries.
D. The differences of voices between two countries.

Have you ever seen a windsock (风向袋) blowing in the wind? Well, you can make one of your own! This is a fun game that you can do with things you may have. You just need to follow a few easy steps.
You will need:
* one piece of heavy colored paper * five ribbons
* strong tape * a string
* a pencil
What to do:
Step 1: Draw pictures on the paper. You can write your name on it. Do anything that will make it special to you.
Step 2: Roll the paper into the shape of a tube (管子). Then stick (粘住) the tube together at each end and in the middle with strong tape.
Step 3: Use a pencil to make a hole into both sides of the tube. The holes should be only on one end of the tube. Pull the string through both holes. Then tie the ends of the string together.
Step 4: Now make five holes around the top of the other end of the tube. Put a ribbon through each of the holes. Tie a knot (结) in the ends. Make sure the knots are bigger than the holes.
Now your windsock is ready to be used, but how does it work? The shape of the tube plays an important part. Wind blows through the tube and makes it fly and dance around. Hold the windsock up in the air and run around. It will fly behind you. You can also hang it outside and watch it dance around on its own.
( )38. How many pieces of tape are used to stick the tube in Step 2?
A. One. B. Two. C. Three. D. Four.
( )39. After which step will your windsock be like this?
A. Step 1. B. Step 2. C. Step 3. D. Step 4.
( )40. What’s probably the most important to make a windsock work?
A. Its size. B. Its shape. C. The weight of the paper. D. The number of the holes.
( )41. What’s the main purpose of this passage?
A. To tell us an interesting story. B. To teach us an important lesson.
C. To show us what a windsock is like. D. To explain how to make a windsock.

Culture shock is simply a common way to describe the confused and nervous feelings a person may have in a new and different culture. When you move to a new place, you have to face a lot of changes. That can be exciting, but it can also be difficult. You may feel sad and nervous.
It’s difficult to get used to a new culture. People from other cultures may have grown up with beliefs that differ from yours. Because of these differences, the things they talk about, the ways they express themselves, and the importance of different ideas may be very different from what you are used to.
You can do a lot to help yourself get used to a new culture. But don’t forget that you aren’t alone — there are people you can go to ask for help: Family and friends. Find someone who has experienced culture shock — maybe an older relative who has moved to the area before you did. Find out how they dealt with the newness of their environment.Teachers. If you don’t know someone who has been through what you’re going through, try talking to teachers at your new school. They’ve helped some students deal with different problems. Although they may not have personal experience of culture shock, they do have experience in helping people deal with hard times.
New friends. Making friends who aren’t new to the culture may help you understand the culture better and have someone to talk to when you’re feeling down.
( )42. What does the underlined word “they” refer to?
A. People from the same country. B. People from different cultures.
C. People living in the same city. D. People living with host families.
( )43. Whom should you turn to if you don’t know people who have suffered the same things as you according the passage?
A. Old friends. B. Family. C. Teachers. D. New friends.
( )44. Which of the following is NOT mentioned according to the passage?
A. What the meaning of culture shock is. B. What causes culture shock.
C. How to do deal with culture shock. D. How culture shock helps us become a useful person.
( )45. Why did the writer write this passage?
A. To introduce culture shock. B. To help people deal with culture shock.
C. To introduce different cultures. D. To help people make new friends.

八、书面表达(共1题,15分)
Dear Julie,
I’m glad to hear from you. You said you wanted to know my life in China. Now let me tell you something about it.
Life in China is completely different from that in America. Many things are strange to me: the food, the language and even the culture. In China, people eat with chopsticks. Although different places have different eating cultures, people in many places get used to eating spicy food. My Chinese is not good, so I first had to try to improve it. It was difficult for me to communicate with my classmates. There are many traditional cultures in China. And it took me lots of time to understand them.
If you want to know about life in China, I think you’d better go there to experience it.
Yours,
Jack
