How can you understand an idiom?
1.First look at the idiom and create an image in your mind.
2. Then look at the context( 语境) to find out the analogy (相似)and the message.

我是父母的掌上明珠。当我考上名牌大学后,我的家人为我大肆庆祝。因为我总是相信付出什么就会收获什么,所以我是如此认真地学习我的专业major以至于每个人都钦佩我的能力。毕业之后,不久就受雇于一家著名的公司作为经理。但是,当我的决定使公司蒙受巨大损失时,老板发现了我弱点。因此,看到这个不详之兆,老板把我解雇了。

One possible version:
I am the apple of my parents’ eye. When I was admitted into a famous university, my family killed the fatted calf. As I always believe that “you reap what you sow”, I worked so hard in my majors that everyone admired my competence. By and by, I hired myself out as a manager in a famous company after graduation.
However, the boss found that I had feet of clay when my decision made the company suffer huge loss. Therefore, seeing the handwriting on the wall, the boss fired me.
