In 1992, Yamaguchi made history as the first Asian-American woman to win the Olympic gold medal in figure skating(花样滑冰). Now Yamaguchi can add children’s book writer to her long list of accomplishments(成就).
Dream Big, Little pig! is a picture book about Poppy, a pig, who dreams of being an actor. Poppy has met a lot of trouble before she finally discovers her love for ice skating. Reporter Mendoza talked with Yamaguchi about her and her latest book.
M: What was your inspiration(灵感) for Dream Big, Little pig?
Y: My own two children, Emma and Keara. We have a lot of fun reading before bedtime every night. So I thought to myself, “Wow, maybe I can write a book for them, too.”
M: Why did you decide to use a pig as the main character?
Y: I love pigs. And I was born in the year of the pig. Pigs have been my favorite animal.
M: When you were little, were you like Poppy?
Y: Kind of! I did try a lot of different things. I used to try a lot of things together---ballet, soccer, all kinds of different sports. But it really wasn’t until I tried out for figure skating that I said, “This is what I want to do.”
M: What’s your advice for young children?

Penny was sad. She wanted a friend to play with.

Penny’s three new friends told her that they would love to be her friends. That was why they used her ball. They wanted her to come over and play. Penny was so happy to have three new friends.
