They were a happy family: four daughters all in the same school in different grades. The youngest, Janice, who was in my class, seemed to be glued (粘) to her mother's skirts. The three older girls took the bus to school every morning, but Janice was always driven to school by her mother.

One Friday, Janice's mother asked for a talk with me. She said in a soft voice, “My husband is going to Europe on business for two weeks, and he insists that I go with him. I have tried to explain over and over that Janice needs me here. But he thinks that she will be fine without me so I have no choice; I have to go. I have told the babysitter to drive her every morning. Will you please give Janice special attention and help her? I want to be sure everything goes well for her.”
I told her that we would make every effort to support Janice. I even volunteered to meet Janice at her car so she would see a familiar face. As a mother myself, I'd like to help. Janice's mother thanked me for our understanding.
On Monday morning, expecting a tearful, anxious child, I planned a special program of fun and games. I waited outside to greet Janice, but just then the bus arrived and not three, but four girls got off. Janice skipped along joyfully, saying “goodbye” to her sisters as she ran with two friends into the classroom. I walked slowly into the classroom and called Janice over to ask how the bus ride went. Impatiently she said, “Oh, I always want to take the bus with the other kids, but Mother needs to be with me. You see there won't be any more babies, so I have to be a baby a little longer. While she is away, I'll just ride the bus every day. I am five, you know.\”

As the world around them is changing, teenagers continue to need guidance and support from both parents. Studies show that teens who have an active relationship with their fathers are less likely to involve (牵涉) themselves in dangerous behaviors and more likely to succeed in school and develop higher self?worth, because their fathers go beyond social expectations to devote attention to them.

Peer (同龄人) pressure has always been a big part of the teens' experience. Even the best father can't completely protect their kids from the growing influence of their peer group. However, studies show that teenagers whose fathers focus on their lives are more likely to resist (抵抗) the more bad effects of peer pressure, taking drugs, for example.
Teens may not like to admit it, but they are wat-ching their parents closely and often follow their example. An interesting finding explains just how important parents are, especially Dad. Swiss researchers discovered that if Dad attends church, even though Mom doesn't, 44 percent of the kids are still more likely to keep going to church as adults. But if Mom goes regularly and Dad never shows up, only 2 percent of the kids continue to attend.
Teenagers face a lot of difficult choices, especially in their later teens. Fathers don't get to make those choices for them, but they can be influenced. For example, teenagers can learn a lot from their parents' concern on what to do when they finish high school. Should they go directly to college and, if so, where? Should they consider going to trade schools, joining the army or looking for a job? A father's guidance brings a long?term perspective that teens often lack to these important decisions.
5.Teenagers without fathers' focus are more likely to .

C.become the best students in school
D.resist all bad effects of peer pressure
6.What does the third paragraph tell us?
A.More teenagers pay no attention to their parents.
B.Teenagers often treat their fathers as role models.
C.Teenagers never attend church with their mothers.
D.Fewer teenagers like to attend church with their fathers.
7.Which can replace the underlined word “perspective” in the last paragraph?
A.Point of view. B.Job.
C.School. D.Lots of concern.
根据画线词上文“Should they go directly ... for a job?”及本句中“to these important decisions”可知,画线词perspective指“观点”,与point of view同义。
8.What can we learn from the text?
A.Fathers should make choices for teenagers directly.
B.Teenagers care less about what their parents do.
C.Mothers have no effect on their children's life.
D.Teenagers are greatly influenced by their fathers.

Dear Sir or Madam,
I'm writing to express my attitude towards the topic “Whether teenagers' secrets should be kept from their parents”.
As a teenager, I don't see anything wrong in keeping secrets to ourselves. Keeping our secrets from our parents can provide us with a chance to experience the world on our own, which will surely exert a positive effect on our future development.
As for me, I do have my little secrets and rarely share them with my family. My parents are very understanding. They say they are glad that I'm beginning to have my own world. Instead of building a generation gap, this makes us feel even closer to each other.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

An 80?year?old man was sitting on the sofa in his house along with his 45?year?old son. Suddenly a crow (乌鸦) landed on their window.

The father asked his son, “What is that?”
The son replied, “That is a crow.”
After a few minutes, the father asked his son for the second time, “What is this?”
The son said, “Father, I told you just now. It's a crow.”
After a little while, the father asked his son the same question for the third time, “What is this?”
This time, the son said to his father in a low and cold tone, “It's a crow, a crow.”
After a moment, the father yet again asked his son for the fourth time, “What is this?”
This time his son shouted at his father, “Why do you keep asking me the same question again and again? I have told you already, ‘IT IS A CROW’. Are you not able to understand this?”
A minute later the father went to his room and came back with a diary, which he had kept since his son was born. On opening a page, he asked his son to read that page.
Today my little son aged three was sitting with me on the sofa when a crow suddenly landed on the window edge. My son asked me 23 times what it was, and I replied him 23 times that it was a crow. I hugged him lovingly each time he asked me the same question. I didn't at all feel angry, but instead felt affection for my son.
If your parents reach old age, do not look at them as a burden, but speak to them gently, and be kind to them. From today say this aloud, “I want to see my parents happy forever. They have cared for me ever since I was a little child. They have always showered me with love. I will take care of my old parents in the best way no matter how they behave.”

D.introduce a pair of son and father

2.The underlined word “affection” probably means “ ”.
A.puzzlement B.hatred (恨)
C.worry D.love
根据倒数第二段中的“I hugged him lovingly each time he asked me the same question. I didn't at all feel angry, but instead ...
3.We can infer that the father wrote that piece of diary at the age of .
A.eighty B.three
C.thirty?eight D.forty?five

A.he forgot what had happened
B.he would like his son to read it
C.it could remind himself of the past

How to Love Your Parents
Even if you think that your parents are mean?spirited (小气的) at times, loving your parents is a normal and fulfilling part of life. You love them for the fact that they created you, raised you, and are in part a source of who you are. Here are some ways to love your parents.
1 A gentle “good morning” and “I love you” will warm a coldest heart. Remember that they brought you into this world. Without your parents, you might still wander at an unknown corner in an unknown world.
Respect them more and cherish these moments. You can use these moments to learn from them when you're off on your own. It's OK to get angry but angry actions don't help you or your parents. Act calmly, cool off, keep a journal of your feelings, or talk to a friend. 2
Obey their requests. It will make your attitude better and earn you more respect from them. It may seem like you are going through hell when you don't get what you want or you have to clean. However, you had better remember they keep a roof over your head when it's cold, raining, snowing, or too hot. Understand that parents are human beings and make mistakes. 3 Since you can forgive your friends, why not forgive your parents?
Keep company with them. Do things with your parents like watching TV, or go somewhere with them. 4 Listen to their old stories and learn from them. You will find they are your teachers in this way or another.
Some people simply may not be able to love their parents. 5 Seek help if you are being abused (虐待) in any way. Parents do not have a right to harm you.
A.Forgiveness is the key.
B.Tell them you love them every morning.
C.Parents will in turn express their love to you.
D.After this, share your feelings with your parents.
E.Anyway, spend as much time with them as you can.
F.Please remember parents are as important as friends.
G.There can be realistic reasons for this, family violence for example.

2.D 根据设空前的“Act calmly, cool off, keep a journal of your feelings, or talk to a friend.”
3.A 根据设空后的“Since you can forgive your friends, why not forgive your parents?”
4.E 根据本段主旨句“Keep company with them.”
5.G 根据空后的“Seek help if you are being abused (虐待) in any way.” 原文中are being abused 和G项中的“family violence”对应。

When I was ten, I was suddenly faced with the suffering of moving from the only home I had ever known. My whole life, brief as it was, had been spent in that big old house, gracefully touched with the laughter and tears of four generations.
When the final day came, I ran to the small backyard and sat alone, with tears welling up from my heart. Suddenly I felt a hand rest on my shoulder. I looked up to see my grandfather. “It isn't easy, is it, Billy?” he said softly, sitting down on the steps beside me.
“Grandpa,” I replied through my tears, “how can I ever say goodbye to you and all my friends?”
For a moment he just stared off into the apple trees. “Goodbye is such a sad word,” he said. “It seems too final, too cold, for friends to use. We seem to have so many ways of saying goodbye and they all have one thing in common: sadness. When you and your friends must part, I want you to reach deep within you and bring back that first hello. Come with me, my friend,” he whispered.
We walked, hand in hand, to his favorite place in the front yard, where a huge red rosebush sat noticeably alone. Kneeling, he pulled me close. “It isn't just the roses that are beautiful, Billy. It's that special place in your heart that makes them so.”
His eyes met mine again. “Billy, I planted these roses a long time ago—before your mother came to the world. I put them into the soil the day my first son was born. It was my way of saying ‘thank you’ to God. That boy's name was Billy, just like yours. I used to watch him pick roses for his mother.” I saw my grandfather's tears. I had never seen him cry before. His voice became hoarse.
注意:

2.至少使用5个短文中标有下划线的关键词语;

Paragraph 1:
“One day a terrible war came, and my son, like so many sons, said goodbye to fight a great evil. Ten months later a telegram came. My son had died in some tiny village in Italy. All I could think of was that the last thing I said to him in life was goodbye.” Grandpa slowly stood up. “Don't ever say goodbye, Billy. Don't ever give in to the sadness and the loneliness of that word. I want you to remember to take that special hello and lock it away within you.”
Paragraph 2:
A year and a half later, my grandfather became seriously ill. When he returned after several weeks in the hospital, he wanted his bed next to the window, where he could see his beloved rosebush. I noted how tired he looked. I took his hand as gently as he had once taken mine. “Hello, Grandpa,” I whispered. His eyes slowly opened, “Hello, my friend.” With a brief smile, he closed them again and forever. Suddenly, I knew what he had meant about never saying goodbye—about refusing to give in to sadness.

We are told that “a family that eats together stays together”. We even follow it by making the whole family sit in front of the television while eating, right? Wrong. Television does nothing to help make the family relationships better. 1 It's thus better to give the TV a break and to sit at the dinner table. Family dinners need another important part—conversations that bring in a pleasant atmosphere.
It often serves well to start the conversation right before dinner so that setting the table and doing other things may become less boring. 2 As a result, there are no embarrassing moments when people are actually eating. Also, you can change the topic if you feel that it might start arguments.
Children aren't usually very good at sharing information and don't know how to reply when you ask them questions like “How was your school today?” 3 For this, you can ask them about the after?class activities that they might be taking part in.
4 Therefore, all controversial (有争议的) topics should not be talked about. Actually, if you have had a funny incident in your day at the work, share it with others. What's more, it serves well if you share your childhood memories with your family. 5 In a word, it is always important to choose the right topics for the family dinner conversations.
A.Try to know more about them than just their school life.
B.It's often difficult to start a conversation at a family dinner.
C.Doing things together can make family members feel interested.
D.In fact, it only increases the distance between members of the family.
E.But try to keep in mind some family dinner conversation ideas.
F.Conversations during dinnertime should encourage family members to eat well.
G.They, especially your kids, will feel excited to hear about what you did as a child.
1.D 根据设空前一句“Television does nothing to help make the family relationships better.”
2.C 根据设空前一句“It often serves well to start the conversation right before dinner so that setting the table and doing other things may become less boring.”
3.A 根据设空前一句“Children aren't usually very good at sharing information and don't know how to reply when you ask them questions like ‘How was your school today?’”
4.F 根据设空下一句“Therefore, all controversial (有争议的) topics should not be talked about.”
5.G 根据设空前一句“What's more, it serves well if you share your childhood memories with your family.”

Crying Mother
Coming home from school that dark winter day so long ago, I was filled with excitement of having the weekend off. But I was shocked into stillness by what I saw. Mother, seated at the far end of the sofa, crying with the second?hand green typewriter on the table. She told me that she couldn't type fast and then she was out of work.
My shock and embarrassment at finding Mother in tears was a perfect proof of how little I understood the pressures on her. Sitting beside her on the sofa, I began very slowly to understand. “I guess we all have to fail sometimes.” Mother said quietly. I could sense her pain and the tension of holding back the strong feelings that were interrupted by my arrival.
Suddenly something inside me turned. I reached out and put my arms around her. She broke then. She put her face against my shoulder and sobbed (啜泣). I held her tightly and didn't try to talk. I knew I was doing what I should, what I could and that it was enough. At that moment, feeling Mother's back with feelings, I understood for the first time her being so easy to break. She was still my mother, yet she was something more: a person like me, capable of fear and hurt and failure. I could feel her pain as she must have felt mine on a thousand occasions when I sought comfort in her arms.
A week later Mother took a job selling dry goods at half the salary the radio station offered. “It's a job I can do, though,” she said simply. But the evening practice on the cold green typewriter continued. I had a very different feeling now when I passed her door at night and heard her tapping away across the paper. I knew there was something more going on in there than a woman learning to type.

I was touched through experiences, memories, books, stories, animals, angels, and most of all other people. People have moved me and molded (对……影响重大) me with moments of love and examples of kindness.
One time on the day before Christmas many years ago when I was a minimum wage mill (工厂) worker, I found myself with very little money and very little time to buy my small children a few simple toys. I knew that they would have to be cheap ones and I hoped my children would like them. I hated not having enough to give them more. I hated being poor. And I hated feeling bad at Christmas rather than happy.
I pulled into a store parking lot and counted my money again. It wasn't much but maybe I could get something small with it. As I was getting out of the car I noticed the Salvation Army (救世军) bell ringer at the entrance. I felt bad again because I didn't feel I could spare anything to give him. I started walking towards the entrance when two cars pulled into empty parking spots in front of me. The first was a shiny, new Cadillac and I felt a twinge of jealousy when I saw it. “How nice,” I thought, “would it be to have enough money to buy a car like that.” The second car, though, was an ancient sedan (轿车) more beat?up and rusty than the one I was driving.
A man hopped (冲) out of the Cadillac and hurried into the store right past the bell ringer without a second glance. Out of the old sedan came a young mother with three small children in tow (紧随着). Her clothes looked as worn out as her car, yet she stopped in front of the bell ringer, smiled, opened her purse, and dropped a bill in his red kettle (钱罐).

Paragraph 1:
I stood there for a minute in astonishment.

Paragraph 2:
In that second a stream of warmth touched me, my jealousy and hatred (憎恨)left me, and all the love and joy filled me.

Paragraph 1:
I stood there for a minute in astonishment. “Maybe,” I thought to myself, “it's better to be rich on the inside instead of the outside.” That rich man should have done something to help the poor, but he didn't. Sometimes it was really wrong to judge a person by his or her appearance. I really had respect for the poor mother from the bottom of my heart. She set a good example for her children to follow.
Paragraph 2:
In that second a stream of warmth touched me, my jealousy and hatred (憎恨)left me, and all the love and joy filled me. I searched for a bill out of my own purse, dropped it in the red kettle, and wished the bell ringer a merry Christmas. I found a few fun things to give my kids and drove home with my heart singing. I knew it was going to be a wonderful Christmas. I could hardly wait to see my children enjoying the presents bought for them, including a special gift—love for those in need.
(1)“That rich man should have done something ...
(2)“from the bottom of my heart”,“set a good example”
(3)“with my heart singing”,“see my children enjoying”

My Dad's Best Flower
I remember my first home was a small apartment on the second floor with a lovely and spacious balcony. When my mum was busy in the kitchen, she let me stay on the balcony watching the kids playing in the street. On that balcony I played sometimes with my elder sister, Maria. She was seven years old and when my mum was absent, she was like a mother to me. The balcony was a great hobby place for my father. After his work he used to grow carnations (康乃馨) in flower boxes. His carnations were red, pink and white, and everyone appreciated them for their beauty.
He took care of them with so much love and devotion. He dealt carefully with his flowers like a mother taking care of her baby. Many times I sat on the floor of the balcony for hours observing him and his lovely flowers with patience. He was always doing something on that balcony. He was watering them every day, cleaning the balcony floor, changing the potting soil and when the stems were thick, strong and high enough, he started his improvement operation attentively like a doctor.
My dad took a tiny knife and with his left hand he held the stem of the carnation and measured the height. Then he made a small mark on the stem with his finger. Afterwards he made a sharp cut with the knife, just enough to fit in a grain of barley Then he bandaged the stem with a small bandage. His job was then to water the plants and to take care of them. “No one should touch them,” he said to Mum. Every day, when he came home from work he went straight to the balcony.
Mum used to tell us, “Do not touch Daddy's flowers.” For us it was a fascinating experience to watch how the small stems were growing and making flowers. When the carnations had grown big enough, my dad enjoyed watching them every day. We the kids did too.
