MY FIRST WORK ASSIGNMENT
“Unforgettable”, says new journalist
Never will Zhou Yang (ZY) forget his first assignment at the office of a popular English newspaper. His discussion with his new boss, Hu Xin (HX), was to strongly influence his life as a journalist.
HX:Welcome. We're delighted you're coming to work with us. Your first job here will be an assistant journalist. Do you have any questions?
ZY:Can I go out on a story immediately?
HX:(laughing) That's admirable, but I'm afraid it would be unusual! Wait till you're more experienced. First we'll put you as an assistant to an experienced journalist. Later you can cover a story and submit the article yourself.
ZY:Wonderful. What do I need to take with me? I already have a notebook and camera.

HX:No need for a camera. You'll have a professional photographer with you to take photographs. You'll find your colleagues very eager to assist you, so you may be able to concentrate on photography later if you're interested.
ZY:Thank you. Not only am I interested in photography, but I took an amateur course at university to update my skills.
HX:Good.
ZY:What do I need to remember when I go out to cover a story?
HX:You need to be curious. Only if you ask many different questions will you acquire all the information you need to know. We say a good journalist must have a good “nose” for a story. That means you must be able to assess when people are not telling the whole truth and then try to discover it. They must use research to inform themselves of the missing parts of the story.

(2019·广东省七校联合体高三第一次联考)These days, I walk down the steps leading toward the south end of the All England Club in Wimbledon, and still look for the Crow's Nest, a small green observation tower with an outer ladder that I used to climb on for a wide view of the grounds, but it has since been knocked down.
The Crow's Nest was a particularly useful point, because it allowed a tennis writer to keep track of the action on as many as 10 outside courts at a time. At the end of the days, reporters from different nations would share notes on what they had observed all over the grounds.
Twenty?seven years later, the press room has touch screens that allow us to watch live videos from any court, and even go back to watch key moments in key matches long after they have finished. You could cover Wimbledon without leaving your seat. But that is a bit like spending all your time ordering room service and looking up fun facts on Wikipedia.
More than at any other tennis tournament, there is also an appetite for stories that deal with the setting, the history and the traditions.
If they change the price of the fish tacos (鱼肉卷饼) at the United States Open, it's not a story. If they change the price of the strawberries and cream, the signature treat at Wimbledon, it's time to email your editor using capital letters.
The new retractable (可缩进的) roof was put in place in 2009. Until then, you always had to have a rainy?day story in your notebook because there were no guarantees any matches would be played. Now tennis is a sure thing on Centre Court, which has made tennis reporters a bit less creative. But at least it guarantees us daily access to the most atmospheric place in the sport.
So much has changed, but Centre Court remains true to its original spirit: more a theater than a stadium. Catching that feeling is part of covering Wimbledon, too.
1.What did the author do on the Crow's Nest in the past?
A.He made friends with reporters.
B.He reported on tennis matches.
C.He appreciated the beautiful scenery.
D.He exchanged experiences with tennis players.
根据第二段可知,过去Crow's Nest是记者们观察、记录赛况的地方,每天结束时,来自不同国家的记者们会分享他们在现场观察到的情况;结合第一段中的“and still look for the Crow's Nest, a small green observation tower with an outer ladder that I used to climb on for a wide view of the grounds”可以判断,作者曾经登上Crow's Nest,报道网球赛的情况,故B项正确。
2.What does the author think of the new way of covering Wimbledon?
A.It lacks fun. B.It is expensive.
C.It is not convenient. D.It is not quick enough.
根据第三段最后两句“You could cover Wimbledon without leaving your seat. But that is a bit like spending all your time ordering room service and looking up fun facts on Wikipedia.”
3.Why does the author mention strawberries and cream?
A.To compare popular foods.
B.To introduce the typical treat at Wimbledon.
C.To describe people's craze for traditional dishes.
D.To show the traditions of Wimbledon are an attraction.
根据第四段“More than at any other tennis tournament, there is also an appetite for stories that deal with the setting, the history and the traditions.”
4.What difference does the new roof make?
A.Audiences have easier access to a tennis court.
B.There's less fun in watching Wimbledon indoors.
C.Reporters are struggling to find original material.
D.Rainy?day stories about Wimbledon have become history.
根据第六段第一、二句“The new retractable (可缩进的) roof was put in place in 2009. Until then, you always had to have a rainy?day story in your notebook because there were no guarantees any matches would be played.”
1.observation n. 观察 2.cover v. 报道
3.appetite n. 欲望
1.knock down 拆除

(2019·山东省济宁一中高三第一次调研考试)Rain is of greatly importance to us. Without rain, our water supply would cut off and we would die, such would plants and animals. If we can gain more effective control over rain, we will enjoy more freedom from the nature. Luckily, we humans have taken steps, such as planting more trees or using weather forecasts, to help avoiding flood damage and protect our water supply.

help (to) do sth.

Each day the online community reports on countless social justice issues around the world. From climate change and gun violence to natural disasters, readers come across a story, learn about an issue and often feel compelled to help. However, without any guidance on how to make a difference, many abandon the attempt and move on with their day.
Ideal Impact, a new Web?based app (应用程序), sees that as a lost opportunity. The app is designed to connect news stories with efficient ways to help make a difference in the real world. Let's say, for example, you recently read an article, “The heartbreaking, world of captive exotic birds” and felt moved by the stories of the often sad lives those birds are forced to live. Once installed on your phone or browser, Ideal Impact would show you opportunities to volunteer, donate or get involved to help captive exotic birds.
Founder, Olivier Kamanda, explains in the company's video, “What would happen when you come across a story that makes you want to get involved in? That arouses a fundamental question, ‘How can I help?’ Unfortunately there is no platform that takes you from that moment of inspiration to a meaningful service opportunity. So every year 90 million people are inspired to get involved to do something with their time and they don't know how. And that comes at a cost of 207 billion dollars in lost volunteer time and donations.” Kamanda said in an interview with the Smithsonian, “Our app bridges the gap between people who are inspired to make a difference and organizations that need support.”
Once the app is installed as a browser plugin on a desktop or mobile device, you can read the news as you normally would. And then, when you come across a story that inspires you to take action, you can click on the Ideal Impact button that appears in the main menu of your browser. That will load the app and show you opportunities to get involved with non?profit organizations that are working to deal with the issue you just read about.

A
The Internet has been changing the media world and will be for decades to come, but traditional media will not be left out of the picture, two journalism professors at University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa believe. Ed Mullins, chairman of the Journalism Department, and Jim Stovall, the founder of Dateline Alabama, the news website of the College of Communication and Information Sciences, agree that the future of the web is still a mystery, but think that, in the near future, it will serve more as a helpmate to traditional media.
“Nobody knows where the web is taking us, but when it comes to journalism, old media will be major players in the new media game,” Mullins believes. “A report goes that most Americans go to websites operated by old media when looking for news on the web.”
Just as national old media control the web at that level, local old media run mainly by newspapers and, to a less degree, by television stations control those markets. Is there a pattern here? “Yes,” says Mullins and Stovall. “At least in the first decade of the web, newspaper companies control web journalism,” Mullins explains. “Why? They specialise in news, and that gives them an advantage. What most readers go to websites for is news and e?mail, a form of person?to?person news, especially in the form of chatting.”
The reason for newspapers control in web journalism, Stovall points out, is that they put the biggest money in news. “The Birmingham News, for example, with about 175 positions, has more journalists on its name lists than all of the state's broadcast, TV stations, and web.”

2.Which of the following statement cannot serve as the proof that old media still control web journalism?
A.People prefer webs operated by old media when looking for news on the web.
B.Old media have the most important position in local markets.
C.Few people go to websites to get national and local news.
D.Newspaper companies have more control in web journalism.
根据第二段中的“most Americans go to websites operated by old media when looking for news on the web”可知,当人们在网上寻找新闻时仍喜欢由传统媒体运营的网站,故排除A项;根据第三段中的“local old media run mainly by newspapers and, to a less degree, by television stations control those markets”可知,传统媒体在当地市场上占据最重要的位置,故排除B项;根据第四段中的“The Birmingham News, for example, with about 175 positions, has more journalists on its name lists than all of the state's broadcast, TV stations, and web.”
3.What is the best title for the passage?
A.Internet Will Not Get Rid of Print Media
B.Internet Will Change Traditional Media
C.Traditional Media Will Disappear
D.Journalism Will Be Controlled by Web
根据第一段中的“agree that the future of the web is still a mystery, but think that, in the near future, it will serve more as a helpmate to traditional media”可知,在不久的将来,网络将作为一个帮手更好地服务于传统媒体。 故选A项。
4.What is the author's attitude towards the future of traditional media?
A.Doubtful. B.Optimistic.
C.Concerned. D.Pessimistic.
第二段中的“old media will be major players in the new media game”以及末段中的“The Birmingham News, for example, with about 175 positions, has more journalists on its name lists than all of the state's broadcast, TV stations, and web.”

(2019·石家庄市重点高中高三毕业班摸底考试)When Gitanjali Rao shared how she likes “finding solutions to real problems”, it was hard to imagine this dynamic girl could settle a problem that had escaped scientists for years.
In just three months, Rao came up with a device (装置) that can replace the costly and lengthy tests currently used to reliably determine lead levels in our fresh water. Inspired by the current litigation (诉讼) in Flint, Michigan, a case of water pollution from 2014 until present, Rao designed a new testing system that resulted in her being named “America's top young scientist” for 2017.
Rao had been following the water problem for about two years. She was amazed by the number of people affected by lead pollution in water and wanted to do something to change this. Rao spent months trying to convince local high schools and colleges to give her lab time to continue her experiment. At home, Rao worked on her project in the “science room” she asked her parents to create for her. Rao has created a device that uses three parts: a cartridge, a Bluetooth reader and an app. To put it simply, the cartridge contains carbon nanotubes (纳米管) that react to lead. This reaction is then registered by the Bluetooth reader, which sends a signal to a mobile app that can tell you immediately if your water is safe to drink.
Rao appropriately named the device Tethys and is hoping to make a little improvement to get the device on the market. While we may not be aware of any lead pollution present in our aging pipelines, lead poisoning can cause delays in physical and mental development. With Rao believing that the “purpose of science is to make a difference”, her incredible invention could make a difference to millions of people in the United States.

A.It's cheap and quick.
B.It's cheap and inaccurate.
C.It's expensive and reliable.
D.It's portable and time?consuming.
根据第二段第一句“In just three months, Rao came up with a device (装置) that can replace the costly and lengthy tests currently used to reliably determine lead levels in our fresh water.”可推知,与以前又贵又费时的设备相比,Rao所发明的设备既便宜又省时,与第三段最后一句“This reaction is then registered by the Bluetooth reader, which sends a signal to a mobile app that can tell you immediately if your water is safe to drink.”
6.What made Rao have the idea of designing the device?
A.Her parents' suggestions.
B.Her desire for winning the award.
C.Her interest in settling real problems.
D.The water pollution litigation in Flint.
根据第二段第二句“Inspired by the current litigation (诉讼) in Flint, Michigan, a case of water pollution from 2014 until present, Rao designed a new testing system that resulted in her being named ‘America's top young scientist’ for 2017.”
7.What do the carbon nanotubes function as?
A.Sending immediate signals.
B.Detecting the presence of lead.
C.Recording the reaction results.
D.Showing the water quality results.
根据第三段倒数第二句“To put it simply, the cartridge contains carbon nanotubes (纳米管) that react to lead.”
8.What does the author think of Rao's invention?
A.It will lead Rao to make a fortune.
B.It will help millions of Americans drink safe water.
C.It will promote the development of science in America.
D.It will soon settle the lead?polluted problem thoroughly.
根据最后一段中的“While we may not be aware of any lead pollution present in our aging pipelines, lead poisoning can cause delays in physical and mental development.” “her incredible invention could make a difference to millions of people in the United States”和对本段的整体理解可推知,作者认为Rao的发明可以帮助人们快速检测出水中是否含有铅,从而可以大大提高人们饮用水的安全性,意义重大,故选B。

1.当句子的谓语是go, come, run等动词和be动词,句中又有表示方位的副词(there,here,up,down,out,in,away等)或时间副词(now, then等),且主语是名词时。
Out rushed the boys when the bell rang.
In the middle of the town stands a tower.
Such were his words at the party yesterday.
Among the goods are Christmas trees, flowers, candles and toys.
Growing all over the mountain are wild flowers.
5.there be 表示“存在”时,其中be也可以换成appear, exist, lie, live, remain, seem, stand等动词。
There stands a temple on the top of the mountain.
①Autumn coming, the leaves.
② , an easy?going girl.

⑤ into the air.
答案:①down fall ②Such is Helen ③sits a young girl
④stood a girl ⑤Up went the arrow
1.表示否定意义的词或短语放在句首时:此类词或短语主要有:not, never, seldom, little, hardly, rarely, by no means, at no time, in no case, in no way, under no circumstances, on no condition等。
Never in my life have I heard such a thing.
Not until I reached home did I find that I had lost the wallet.
Only then did I fully understand what my father said.
(1)not until ...
Only he can understand me.
My entire family is hearing, and so are all my friends.
My father doesn't smoke; nor/neither does her father.
He likes football and so does his brother.
—David has made great progress recently.
—So he has, and so have you.
4.not only ... but also ... 引导两个并列分句,not only置于句首时,not only所在的分句需用倒装,but also所在的分句不用倒装;而neither ... nor ...
Not only did Bolt win the gold medal at the men's 200 m, but his teammates also won the silver and the bronze medals in the same race together.
Neither did I like the book, nor did I want to read it.
5.某些含有否定词的连词结构:如no sooner ... than, hardly ...when, scarcely ...when等,把no sooner, hardly, scarcely置于句首时,主句要倒装,从句不倒装。
Hardly had I sat down when I heard my phone ringing.
=No sooner had I sat down than I heard my phone ringing.
So suddenly did he catch the disease that the whole family was at a great loss.
Such an honest boy is he that we all love him!
Housewife as/though she is, she knows a lot about law.
8.在含有had/were/should的虚拟条件句中可以省略if,将had/were/should放在主语之前,构成部分倒装。
Had I had time yesterday I would have helped you.
Were she my friend, I would ask her for help.

A
The media provides us with the observations and experiences from which we build up our personal understanding of the world and how it works. Much of our view of reality is based on media messages. The media, to a great extent, gives us our sense of reality.
Freedom of the media carries with it certain responsibilities of honesty, fairness, accuracy and accountability. The power of the media to create and destroy human values comes with great responsibility.
The media is powerful in the political system, having great influence on politics and on forming social change. The power is to decide who will communicate what to whom. Television can greatly influence the election of a national leader on the basis of his or her image.
Professional journalists do have a code of ethics. Journalists make a judgment about what's safe and appropriate to report, which often involves difficult choices. German sociologist Max Weber distinguishes between “ethics of conviction” and “ethics of responsibility”. According to the latter (ethics of responsibility), journalists must take into account the foreseeable consequences of their reporting, and the impact it will have on society. The former, on the other hand, asks journalists to tell the truth, regardless of the consequences. According to Weber, both ideas of ethics should be considered.
Without doubt, information is power, and the big owners of the mass media are very powerful people. Television and radio stations, newspapers, magazines, and websites are, largely, owned and controlled by profit?making businesses. It is not strange that their ideas will get promoted at times.
It is my view that such power and responsibility should never be left in the hands of a few. I believe it is our responsibility as concerned citizens to make sure we are not merely passive viewers, readers or listeners. Together we can have a huge influence on the media by making our views known.
1.What's the first paragraph mainly about?
A.Responsibilities of the media.
B.Influence of the media.
C.History of the media.
D.Problems of the media.
2.We can learn from the third paragraph that .
A.the media is more interested in politics than other fields
B.forming social change is the main duty of the media
C.the great power of the media is controlled by political figures
D.the media can affect politics by forming political figures' images
3.What can we conclude based on the passage?
A.The mass media should be owned by the government.
B.The media industry has developed into a new age in recent years.
C.In most cases, journalists are more powerful than the owners of the media.
D.The media tends to promote the ideas of the owners of profit?making businesses sometimes.
4.In the writer's opinion, citizens should .
A.trust the mass media
B.become an influence on the media
C.know how the media works
D.try to report news themselves
根据最后一段中的“we are not merely passive viewers ... , we can have a huge influence on the media by making our views known”可知作者的观点是反对媒体由少数人控制,大众应该发表自己的观点来影响媒体舆论。故选B。
B
(2019·山东省济宁一中高三第一次调研考试)Skeptics are strange a lot. Some of them refuse to admit the serious threat of human activities to the environment and they are tired of people who disagree with them. Those people, say skeptics, spread nothing but bad news about the environment. The “eco?guilt” brought on by the discouraging news about our planet gives rise to the popularity of skeptics as people search for more comforting worldviews.
Perhaps that explains why a new book by Bjorn Lomborg received so much publicity. That book, The Skeptical Environmentalist, declares that it measures the “real state of the world” as fine. Of course, another explanation is the deep pockets of some big businesses with special interests. Indeed, Mr Lomborg's views are similar to those of some industry?funded organizations, which start huge activities through the media to confuse the public about issues like global warming.
So it was strange to see Mr Lomborg's book go largely unchallenged in the media though his beliefs were contrary to most scientific opinions. One national newspaper in Canada ran a number of articles and reviews full of words of praise, even with the conclusion that “After Lomborg, the environmental movement will begin to die down.”
Such one?sided views should have immediately been challenged. But only a different review appeared in Nature, a respected science magazine with specific readership. The review remarked that Mr Lomborg's “preference for unexamined materials is incredible”.
A critical eye is valuable, and the media should present information in such a way that could allow people to make informed decisions. Unfortunately, that is often inaccessible as blocked by the desire to be shocking or to defend some special interests. People might become half?blind before a world partially exhibited by the media. That's a shame, because matters concerning the health of the planet are far too important to be treated lightly.
5.According to the passage, which of the following may be regarded as “skeptics”?
A.People who agree on the popularity of “eco?guilt”.
B.People who dislike the harmful effect of human activities.
C.People who disbelieve the serious situation of our planet.
D.People who spread comforting news to protect our environment.
根据第一段第二句“Some of them refuse to admit the serious threat of human activities to the environment and they are tired of people who disagree with them.” C项“People who disbelieve the serious situation of our planet.”
6.Which of the following can be a reason for the popularity of Lomborg's books?
A.The book challenges views about the fine state of the world.
B.Some big businesses intend to protect their own interests.
C.The author convinces people to speak comforting worldviews.
D.Industry?funded media present confusing information.
根据第二段第三句及最后一句“Indeed, Mr Lomborg's views are similar to those of some industry?funded organizations, which start huge activities through the media to confuse the public about issues like global warming.”
7.The author mentioned the review in Nature in order to .
A.find fault with Lomborg's book
B.voice a different opinion
C.challenge the authority of the media
D.point out the value of scientific views
8.What is the author's main purpose in writing the passage?
A.To show the importance of presenting overall information by the media.
B.To warn the public of the danger of half?blindness with reviews.
C.To blame the media's lack of responsibility in information.
D.To encourage the skeptics to have a critical eye.
根据最后一段第一句“A critical eye is valuable, and the media should present information in such a way that could allow people to make informed decisions.”

How to Do Man?on?the?Street Interviews
The man?on?the?street interview is an interview in which a reporter hits the streets with a cameraman to interview people on the spot. 1 But with these tips, your first man?on?the?street interview experience can be easy.
·When your boss or professor sends you out to do man?on?the?street interviews for a story, think about the topic and develop a list of about ten general questions relating to it. For example, if your topic is about environmental problems in America, you might ask, “Why do you think environmental protection is important in America?” 2
·Hit the streets with confidence. 3 Say, “Excuse me, I work for XYZ News, and I was wondering if you could share your opinion about this topic.” This is a quick way to get people to warm up to you.
·Move on to the next person if someone tells you she is not interested in talking on camera.Don't get discouraged.
? 4 Each interview that you get on the street shouldn't be longer than ten minutes. As soon as you get the answer you need, move on to the next person. Make sure that as you go from interview to interview, you are getting a variety of answers. If everyone is giving you the same answer, you won't be able to use it. A safe number of interviews to conduct is about six to ten. 5
?If your news station or school requires interviewees to sign release forms to appear on the air, don't leave work without them.
A.Limit your time.
B.As you approach people, be polite.
C.If you don't own a camera, you can buy one.
D.For new reporters, this can seem like a challenging task.
E.To get good and useful results, ask them the same question.
F.That number of interviews should give you all the answers you need.
G.With a question like this, you will get more than a “Yes” or “No” reply.
2.G 本段说去采访前要列出大约十个与采访话题相关的问题,并在空格前给出例子“Why do you think ...?”,选项G中的“With a question like this”与上文相呼应。故选G。
3.B 空格后的“excuse me”以及“I was wondering if you could ...”
故选A。
5.F 选项F中的“That number of interviews”与空格前的“A safe number of interviews to conduct”前后照应,即这个采访量应该能为你提供你需要的全部答案。故选F。

Section Ⅴ Writing
