Since I was born, I have been listening to music all the time. Not just any music, but the right kind of music.
It may seem strange to say that, but hearing good music played well by a big music group is something that a lot of people no longer experience. Most people are musically illiterate (了解不多的) simply because they have never had any chance to listen to good music. Many people are unfamiliar with the sound of a symphony orchestra (交响乐团). They only hear orchestra music while watching ads and films. But to me a symphony orchestra is the biggest instrument in the world. To hear a full symphony orchestra on stage and to feel the power of the sound — it is like a big wave. It is an amazing experience and it is one that I was lucky enough to grow up with.
My mother was a well-known singer. She had been a member of the Vienna State Opera and the Budapest State Opera and as a baby I was taken along to concerts and stages. I was not necessarily listening to classical music but always good music played well.
My mother was the sixteenth child in her family. She was the youngest and by the time she was born, her oldest sister also had a child with whom she shared a bed. With so many loving families around her, my mother grew up happily to be a cheerful woman.
Because I lost my father when I was very young, I do not remember much about him. What I do know is largely what I have been told by my mother. I am like him in many ways. He was obviously a very serious man, always appearing sad. I seem to have inherited (继承) something of that from him. Fortunately, I inherited far more of my mother's happiness — a real show business personality (性格).

Diana Ross, American pop singer and actress, achieved international popularity, first as the leader singer of the Supremes and later as a solo (独唱的) artist. Diana Ross was born on March 26,1944, in Detroit, Michigan. She was the second of six children of Fred and Ernestine Ross, who lived in one of Detroit's poor districts. Because her family were closely connected with each other, Ross almost didn't notice the difficult life as she grew up.
Ross' professional career began in 1959, when she joined several neighborhood friends to form the Primettes. The group was renamed the Supremes after signing a recording contract (合同) with Motown late the following year. The group produced many number-one hit singles (热门单曲) on the US Billboard Hot 100, including Baby Love, Stop! In the Name of Love and Someday We'll Be Together. In 1967, the group was renamed Diana Ross and the Supremes, foreshadowing (预示) Ross'solo career, which she started in 1970.
Beginning with Ain't No Mountain High Enough from her first solo album, Ross enjoyed more than ten years of great success with her hit singles. Ross also developed a film-acting career in the 1970s, beginning with a starring role as blues singer Billie Holiday in Lady Sings the Blues and continuing with Mahogany, for which she also recorded the theme song Do You Know Where You're Going To.
However, in the mid-1980s, Ross saw her career begin to wane. Most of her albums were re-recordings of earlier material. In 2006, she produced I Love You, a collection of love songs by many artists, and she started an energetic concert tour the following year to make the album publicly known. Although you can't find her songs on the US Billboard Hot 100 now, Ross remains popular as one of the leading musical performers of all time.

Generally, the blues are often associated with unhappy things. For example, if you lose your iob, you might want to listen to the blues. Although the blues often deal with unhappy personal things, the music itself goes far beyond self-pity. The blues is also about overcoming hard luck, saying what you feel, ridding yourself of sadness, making you relaxed, and simply having tun.
The blues has deep roots in American history, particularly African-American history. The blues began in Southern plantations (大农场) in the 19th century. Its inventors were slaves, ex-slaves and the children of slaves — African-American sharecroppers (佃农) who sang as they worked in the cotton and vegetable fields.
The blues grew up in the Mississippi Delta just upriver from New Orleans, the birthplace of jazz. Blues and jazz have always influenced each other, and they still influence each other in many ways today. Unlike jazz, the blues didn't spread out quickly from the South to the Midwest until the 1930s and 1940s. When the Delta blues made their way up the Mississippi to urban areas, the music developed into electrified Chicago blues, other regional blues styles, and various jazz-blues hybrids. About ten years later, the blues gave birth to rhythms (节奏) ‘n’blues and rock ‘n’roll. No single person invented the blues, but many people said they had discovered different styles of the blues. For example, a bandleader, W.C.Handy insisted that the blues was first shown to him in 1903 by a street guitarist at a train station in Tutwiler, Mississippi.
During the middle to late 1800s, the Deep South was home to hundreds of important bluesmen who helped to shape the music. Unfortunately, much of this original music followed these sharecroppers to their graves. But the music of these earliest blues pioneers can still be heard in the recordings of 1920s and 1930s from Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Georgia and other Southern states.

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
One winter Sunday, my little sister, Colleen, and I built the greatest snowman ever. We gave him a carrot nose, beautiful hat, cozy scarf and gloves. He was a masterpiece (杰作).
The next morning when looking outside, we smiled lovingly at him over our meal. We gave him a high-five as we passed by on our way to school. A lot of kids went past our house, so he was the hot topic at our school that morning. It was our pride!
The day dragged on until finally we could rush home. But as our yard came into sight, we saw something wrong. The snowman was gone! We only found a broken stick here, a torn glove there and balls of snow everywhere. Worst of all, the snowman's once-proud carrot nose lay limp (无力的) and half-eaten.
What had happened? We were both astonished and angry. But then, we were only kids, who wouldn't have anything taking away our happiness. Actually we knew only one thing: Our snowman would rise again. And so we rebuilt him.
The next day we came home to find another mess on the front lawn (草坪). For the rest of the week, the destruction was repeated daily. Each afternoon we'd return to find our snowman had fallen apart, and then we built again.
By Saturday morning, we had a plan. We borrowed a really big bucket (水桶) from Mom, filled it with water and left it outside. The next morning, it was frozen solid. We packed snow all around the ice_block as the base (底座) of the snowman. Then we built the other parts of it once again. The trap was set, and we waited for the snowman bullies (破坏者) to come.

答案:
Paragraph 1:
Monday morning, hiding behind the window, we soon saw what we were waiting for. It turned out that there were three of them from our school. They sneaked up on our snowman and sneered. Taking their places on either side, they pulled back their legs to deliver powerful kicks. But the moment they hit the hard ice_block of the base,_sneers (嗤笑) turned into shock, then agony (极度痛苦) and tears. They howled and cursed, gritting their teeth and stomping (跺) their feet.
Paragraph 2:
Seeing their pained look, we couldn't help laughing. They were too funny as they hopped away holding their damaged feet. We just couldn't contain our happiness and excitement. With a hearty laugh, we came out of hiding and sprang into the yard from inside the house. “An eye for an eye! Justice done!” We yelled behind them. And that was the end of our problems with the snowman bullies. Ever since then. our snowman was kept guarded and intact until it happily melted into spring water and finally wove into our sweetest childhood memories.

You might have noticed that the ringing sound of basketballs was almost like the beat to a song. But did you know that it could be taken seriously as music?
The music group STOMP has taken everyday objects and turned them into instruments. The music it has created is a hit all over the world.
STOMP was formed by British musicians Luke Cresswell and Steve McNicholas. They met in the early 1980s when they were both working as buskers, the British term for street performers. Cresswell and McNicholas were part of a busking group called Pookiesnackenburger that became very popular throughout Britain.
Cresswell was a drummer (鼓手) for the group. Because they performed on the street, he could not set up a traditional drum set. Instead, he wore one drum that hung around his shoulders. To be able to make different sounds, Cresswell began beating on everyday objects that he could find during performances. This creative drumming led to the idea for STOMP.
STOMP made its first public appearance at London's Bloomsbury Theatre in 1991. The performers used one-of-a-kind instruments, such as empty water bottles, basketballs, and matchboxes to create music. Wearing overalls and T-shirts, they danced around on a stage made to look like a closed warehouse (仓库). STOMP was a great success, winning many theater awards and drawing huge crowds (人群).
In 1994, STOMP came to the United States and played at the Orpheum Theater in New York City. Years later it is still playing there! To celebrate its ten-year anniversary (周年纪念), the then New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg renamed the street outside the theater STOMP Avenue.
STOMP has now toured all over the United States and most of the world. One reason STOMP is so popular is that anyone can enjoy it. There are no words or story. People from all cultures can understand it, no matter which language they speak.

More Americans expect to work past their 65th birthdays and never retire, says a recent study. The Associated Press with the NORC Centre for Public Affairs Research questioned 1,075 people, who were aged 50 and older. One-fourth of them said they never planned to retire. That was even truer for low-income earners in that age group.
In America, the age of 65 is the traditional age to retire. 60 percent of the people aged 50 to 64 said they expected to work past their 65th birthdays. More than half of those who were already older than 65 said they planned to keep working, too. They said they were working an average of 31 hours per week.
Those 50 years of age or older said finances (财务) were the most important factor in the decision on when to retire. A majority (多数) of older workers-especially those who were 65 and older - planned to change employers or move into an entirely new job, as they headed into the later years.
One-third of the people earning less than $50,000 a year said they would keep working. About 20 percent of those who earned more than $100,000 said they would never retire.
As baby boomers - people born between 1946 and 1964 - reach the age of 65, the United States will have more older people than ever before. The number of Americans who were 65 years old and older jumped 21 percent - or to 35.5 million - between 2002 and 2012. That number is expected to reach 92 million by 2060.

Pharrell Williams takes a breath and considers how the past years have developed for him: ten Grammy Awards and a number of hit singles including a song that has caused countless fans to express how they are “happy”.
And the key, says the 43-year-old known simply as Pharrell, has been taking advantage of audiences' (听众的) need for heartfelt personal stories.
“I think we've entered a new singer-song writer time,” said the American singer and producer. “People want a story. They want a story they can connect to. It's not about what you have or what you don't have; it's more about your journey and your viewpoint that's important to people.”
Pharrell said he noticed a change in audiences'tastes over the past year in particular with the sudden success of his song Happy, which received little fanfare upon its release but has turned into an international hit. Countless videos populate sites like YouTube with people from Portugal and China to Abu Dhabi and Iran singing and dancing along to the song.
After seeing how far his song travelled, the singer broke down in tears during a televised interview with the famous talk show host Oprah Winfrey.
“It's just encouraging to people who have something to say, something to express,” he said.
The success has made Pharrell realize that people are searching for personal and emotional links (情感纽带), perhaps as a means of getting away from the modern technological world we're living in today.
“People want to feel. There's too much thinking to deal with,” the singer said. “We're different from what we were 15 years ago. The only thing we have left that reminds (提醒) us that we are humans is feeling. It's the most important thing ever.”

Ice cream businessman Mikey Cole's treats are cooler than cool. Truffle Shuffle, Foxy Brown, Brady Bunch — these are just a few of the popular ice creams made at Mikey Likes It Ice Cream in NYC's East Village. But nine years ago, Michael “Mikey” Cole, the man behind the cold ice creams, was serving something different:“I spent six months on Rikers Island selling drugs (毒品),” says Cole, a native New Yorker. “That time in my life was about having fun and being reckless (不计后果的), but things_hit_home when I was put in prison (监狱).”
Determined to be a changed man once he'd done his time, Cole, now 37, graduated from college and held various jobs until the death of his aunt Lucy — “She used to tell me, ‘Don't go left when you're supposed to go right’” — led him to find his real interest. While cleaning out her apartment, Cole discovered her cookbook collection, including a recipe (食谱) for chocolate ice cream. He bought an ice cream maker and began experimenting with her recipe. “It took me away from everything,” he says. Six experiments later, Cole perfected his chocolate treat, Ice Ice Baby, and began selling ice cream out of his apartment.
In 2014, Cole opened his own shop not far from where he grew up. But no matter how popular he becomes, Cole is committed to (忠于) his neighborhood. “For me, ice cream is about encouraging other Mikeys to start businesses and give back,” says Cole, “just like my aunt taught me.” How sweet he is!

Until March 18, New York City is hosting the New York International Children's Film Festival (NYICFF). The festival presented films from 24 countries. 50% of the filmmakers are women.
Since February 23, when the festival began, viewers have been able to choose from more than 100 films at six theaters across the city. Although the event is considered as a children's festival, the films set no rules as to who you are or where you come from.
Among the films presented at the festival, Zoo and Zombillenium are two impressive (给人深刻印象的) ones. Zoo is a British war film that shows the difference that a kid can make.
Tom is the protagonist (主角) of this heartwarming story. Tom' s dad is the owner of the Belfast Zoo. After he leaves to fight in the war, Tom has to save the zoo' s baby elephant, Buster, from being killed in the war.
“I loved it,” said 9-year-old Gabriel Bieller of New York City after seeing the film. “It really taught how kids could make a difference.”
Ella Hanson, 7, was also moved. “The sweet story of a kid like me making a difference when faced with difficulties caused by a war,” she said, “was very encouraging.”
Zombillenium is an animated (动画的) French film about working hard to achieve your dreams. Hector Saxe is the immediately dislikeable protagonist. His management job is all about rules. But after he starts working at the amusement park (游乐园) that he hates, he puts all of his love into getting it ready for his daughter to visit.
The film had many positive reactions (反响) from the audience. “The story presented great, lifelike characters,” said Sami Ali, 12.
Oliver, 10, who did not provide a last name, said, “It was rather sad, but it underlined the importance of never letting go of the things that you care about.”
