意群和意群之间可以有一定的停顿, 这种停顿和人们的思维活动是一致的。但一个意群中的各个单词之间则不可停顿, 整个意群读下来就像一个长单词一样。记住: 英语不是一个词一个词地说的。

Before Breakfast
“Where’s Papa going with the ax? ” said Fern to
her mother as they were setting the table for breakfast.
“Out to the hoghouse, ” replied Mrs Arable.
“Some pigs were born last night. ”
“I don’t see why he needs an ax, ” continued Fern,
who was only eight.
“Well, ” said her mother, “one of the pigs is a
runt. It’s very small and weak, and it will never
amount to anything. So your father has decided to do
away with it. ”
“Do away with it? ” shrieked Fern. “You mean
kill it? Just because it’s smaller than the others? ”
Mrs Arable put a pitcher of cream on the table.
“Don’t yell, Fern! ” she said. “Your father is right.
The pig would probably die anyway. ”
Fern pushed a chair out of the way and ran
outdoors. The grass was wet and the earth smelled of
spring time. Fern’s sneakers were sopping by the time
she caught up with her father.
“Please don’t kill it! ” she sobbed. “It’s unfair. ”
Mr Arable stopped walking.
“Fern, ” he said gently, “you will have to learn to
control yourself. ”
“Control myself? ” yelled Fern. “This is a matter
of life and death, and you talk about controlling
myself. ” Tears ran down her cheeks and she took
hold of the ax and tried to pull it out of her father’s
hand.
“Fern, ” said Mr Arable, “I know more about
raising a litter of pigs than you do. A weakling makes
trouble. Now run along! ”
“But it’s unfair, ” cried Fern. “The pig couldn’t
help being born small, could it? If I had been very
small at birth, would you have killed me? ”
Mr Arable smiled. “Certainly not, ” he said,
looking down at his daughter with love. “But this is
different. A little girl is one thing, a little runty pig is
another. ”
“I see no difference, ” replied Fern, still hanging
on to the ax. “This is the most terrible case of injustice
I ever heard of. ”
A queer look came over John Arable’s face. He
seemed almost ready to cry himself. “All right, ” he
said. ” You go back to the house and I will bring the
runt when I come in. I’ll let you start it on a bottle,
like a baby. Then you’ll see what trouble a pig can be. ”
When Mr Arable returned to the house half an
hour later, he carried a carton under his arm. Fern
was upstairs changing her sneakers. The kitchen table
was set for breakfast, and the room smelled of coffee,
bacon, damp plaster, and wood smoke from the
stove.
“Put it on her chair! ” said Mrs Arable. Mr
Arable set the carton down at Fern’s place. Then he
walked to the sink and washed his hands and dried
them on the roller towel.
Fern came slowly down the stairs. Her eyes were
red from crying. As she approached her chair, the
carton wobbled, and there was a scratching noise.
Fern looked at her father. Then she lifted the lid of the
carton. There, inside, looking up at her, was the
newborn pig. It was a white one. The morning light
shone through its ears, turning them pink.
“He’s yours, ” said Mr Arable. “Saved from an
untimely death. And may the good Lord forgive me
for this foolishness. ”
Fern couldn’t take her eyes off the tiny pig. “Oh, ”
she whispered. “Oh, look at him! He’s absolutely
perfect. ”
Because it is very small and weak.
Inside the carton is the newborn pig.

The words “protect animals” appear everywhere in books and on screens, because some animals are even in danger of dying out. But sometimes the reality can be a little different from what people read or watch.
About 300 black bears were killed in Florida, the US, in October, 2015. It’s been the first bear hunt in the state since 1994. Local officers explained that the black bear population had grown to 3, 500 and become a menace to local people. In the past two years, bears have hurt at least four people in Florida.
Months ago, the Swiss government allowed locals to kill a wolf. This was because the wolf killed 38 sheep, and it was a great loss to some local farmers. Days ago in China, three old men were caught by the police for killing a serow (鬣羚), a kind of protected animal. They said they killed the animal because it ate the plants they grew.
However, these stories don’t always mean that animal protection stops because of human interests especially when it is related to economic development. A man named Zhou Weisen set up a wild animal base in Guilin, Guangxi. He saved over 170 tigers and about 300 bears. His base also offered jobs to local people.
“There may never be a standard answer to the question of whether we should give more attention to the environment or human development, ” said Robert May, a British expert at Oxford University. “But we shouldn’t push either one to the side, as the future is uncertain. ”

Animals, including insects, do not have a language like ours. They do not talk to each other in words and sentences. But if we watch them, we can see that they do have ways of communicating with each other.
Can you see the rabbits’ tail? When rabbits see this white tail moving up and down, they run too. The rabbit has reminded them of potential dangers without making a sound. It has given them a signal.
Many other animals use this kind of language. When a cobra(眼镜蛇) is angry, it raises its hood(兜帽) and makes itself look fierce. This warns other animals. When a bee has found some food, it goes back to its home. It cannot tell the other bees where the food is by speaking to them, but it does a little dance in the air. This tells the bees where the food is.
Some animals say things by making sound. A dog barks, for example, when a stranger comes near. A cat purrs(猫的呜呜声) when pleased. Some birds make several different sounds, each with its own meaning. Sometimes we human beings speak in the same way. We make sounds like “Oh” or “Ah! ” when we are frightened or pleased or when we drop something on our toes.
But we have something that no animals have-a large number of words which have the meanings of things, actions, feelings or ideas. We are able to give each other all kinds of different information in words and sentences, which no other animals can do. No other animals have so wonderful a language as we have.

Dr Dian Fossey, one of the world’s leading women scientists, had a remarkable career. The work she devoted her life to protecting and studying the mountain gorillas (大猩猩) of Africa—has proved highly effective and has resulted in the steady (平稳的) increase of this most endangered great apes.
Fossey made her first trip to Africa in 1963. Three years later, she returned to Africa to begin a long-term study of the mountain gorillas. She set up camp in the Democratic Republic of Congo but moved to Rwanda because of political reasons in 1967. She established her “Karisoke” Research Centre camp on September 24, 1967.
Fossey’s aims were to study gorilla ecology (生态学) and social organization. She found that in order to achieve this, she needed to recognize individual gorillas, which required that the gorillas get used to her presence (出现). By copying gorillas’ behaviour and sounds, Fossey began to gain their trust, and in 1970 an adult male gorilla she had named “Peanuts” reached out to touch her hand.
Close observations over thousands of hours enabled Fossey to gain the gorillas’ trust and bring forth new knowledge about their behaviour. Stories and photographs of her work were published in National Geographic Magazine and elsewhere.
In 1977, one of Fossey’s favorite gorillas, Digit, was killed by poachers and she established the Digit Fund to help raise money for gorilla protection efforts in the same year.
On December 26, 1985, Fossey was murdered while going back to her house in Karisoke. Her body was discovered near the research centre. Most probably, Dian Fossey had been killed by the poachers she’d fought against. On her tombstone (墓碑) “No one loved gorillas more”.

More than two thirds of the world’s polar bears will be wiped out by 2050, according to a shocking new study. By then, scientists say, global warming will have melted 42 percent of the Arctic sea ice. By 2100, only a very few of these important creatures will be left.
The report has been produced by the US Geological Survey. The scientists have publicized their findings in the hope of influencing US Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne, who has been asked to put polar bears on the US endangered species list.
Polar bears depend on floating sea ice as a platform for hunting seals, which are their main food. Without enough ice, polar bears would be forced to go onto the land, where they are poorly skilled hunters, and would be unlikely to adapt to the life on the land in time. Experts say few little bears would survive and the stress could make many females unable to get pregnant.
The team of American and Canadian scientists spent six months studying bears, on the ground, from spotter planes and in the lab, using computer models. Some team members fear the result is even worse for the bears than what their report says. They say the Arctic is warming faster than anywhere in the world and much faster than their computer had been forecasting. Satellite observations have showed that the ice has decreased to an all-time low.
However, not everyone in the scientific community believes that global warming is happening on such an alarming scale. Another investigation has found that polar bears are still being hunted by wealthy “sportsmen” who want their skins and heads. At least ten international companies offer bear-hunting trips.

A. Because polar bears can’t catch enough food without ice.
B. Because polar bears eat ice when they feel thirsty.
C. Because polar bears will be easily found by hunters without ice.
D. Because most female bears are used to giving birth under ice.
【解析】选A。推理判断题。根据第三段第一句“Polar bears depend on floating sea ice as a platform for hunting seals, which are their main food. ”可知, 如果没有足够的海冰, 北极熊会因为捕捉不到足够的猎物而濒临灭绝, 故选A。

How to Make Quick Decisions for Your Life
We make decisions every day. 1 When it comes to making decisions, choosing the right one can at times be stressful, especially if the decision must be made quickly. Indecision often weighs us down, but there are some useful tips for making quick decisions more easily. ?
2 Sometimes the key to making a quick decision comes down to planning ahead of time for just such an occasion. We all know we’re going to come to an important decision-making point sooner or later, so having a plan already in hand can put our mind at ease when that time comes. ?
Overcome fear. 3 While it may seem difficult to overcome the fear of making the wrong choice, many experts agree that we shouldn’t be afraid to make the wrong decision, even if it seems important. The vast majority of wrong decisions can be corrected, while delaying decisions can often lead to more problems. ?
Write down all the advantages and disadvantages of your decision. Even if you don’t have all the information, writing down all the pros and cons(优缺点) is a good starting point for figuring out what to do. In cases where there simply isn’t enough time to write things down, make a mental list in your mind. Thinking of the pros and cons can help you organize your thoughts. 4 ?
Determine criteria. Remember that every decision you make should come with a certain list of criteria. 5 But once you know the requirements you’re looking for, making a decision will become easier. Look for the choice that satisfies the list you’ve made, and once that choice is found, you should move ahead with it. ?
A. Have a plan.
B. The list may be short or quite long.
C. Communicate your decision with others.
D. And this can always lead to a clear answer.
E. So cut out any options that you know you will not choose.
F. Often, one thing that keeps us from making decisions is fear.
G. Some can be very important while others are not serious in the long run.

More and more birds are flying to settle at Qinghai Lake, one of the highest inland lakes in China, thanks to the protection efforts of local governments. Covering an area of over 4, 000 square kilometers. Qinghai Lake is also the country’s biggest salt-water lake. Located in Northwest China’s Qinghai Province, the lake is famous for the two islands at its northwest point—Cormorant Island and Egg Island. The two islands have plenty of floating grass and various schools of fish, offering rich food sources for birds. The islands have become a paradise for different kinds of groups of birds and have been called“Bird Islands”.
Each March and April, when ice and snow covering the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau starts to melt, over 20 kinds of birds fly to the Bird Islands to lay eggs. During the months, flocks of birds cover the whole sky over the islands and birds eggs can be found everywhere. Visitors can hear the singing of birds from miles away. These have become a world famous symbol of the lake.
To protect this paradise for birds and support calls for ecological protection, China set up the Qinghai Lake Natural Protection Zone at the end of 1997. Meanwhile, the State has pointed out the Bird Islands and Spring bay of the Qinghai Lake as central protection zones.
Inspection officials and management employees often patrol the lake, improving local residents’ knowledge of related laws and spreading knowledge about animal protection to visitors. They are making great efforts to call on people to love and protect the birds. At the same time, they have built special fences around the island area to prevent wolves, foxes and other carnivorous animals, as well as illegal hunters from breaking up the birds’ nest-building, egg-laying and breeding. As a result, more and more birds are coming to the islands for sheltering and breeding.
