Chinese Lunar New Year in London
When Chinese Lunar New Year comes, people in London are also filled with excitement.Read the following passage and find out what you can do to join in the excitement!
For London’s Chinese community, Chinese Lunar
New Year is a huge event. Before this day, people make sure their houses are clean and tidy, buy new clothes and have their hair cut to bring good luck for the new year.London has the biggest celebrations outside of Asia.Hundreds of thousands of people go to watch the parade(游行) from the West End to Trafalgar Square, which includes Chinese acrobatics(杂技), and traditional lion and dragon dances.
In central London there are fireworks and stage performances with all kinds of acts and special guests. There are also celebrations including fashion shows and Chinese hip hop acts, as well as traditional acrobatic performances.
In Chinatown, the streets which are full of food stalls are decorated with many lucky red lanterns(灯笼).If you’re thinking of eating in one of Chinatown’s excellent Chinese restaurants, book a table early, or you won’t have one on that night.
For young Chinese people studying or working in the U.K., video chatting is a common way of joining big family celebrations back home. Those missing home might also cook traditional Chinese dumplings for friends in Britain or organize an evening of karaoke(卡拉OK), another popular way of celebrating. The festivities are not as noisy as back home, they say, where loud firecrackers are traditionally used to frighten away a terrible monster called “Nian”,and the special red envelopes of money from relatives back home may also be hard to reach the U.K.But there is still plenty of excitement, happiness and good feelings,as people come together to enjoy the celebrations.

More and more people around the world are getting tattoos(文身). In the United States a large number of people aged 25 to 40 get tattoos. A third of all Americans between 18 and 25 have a tattoo. In Britain a fifth of all adults are tattooed.Tattooing has become an important industry as well. Today, there are more than 50,000 tattoo artists in the U.S. alone.
Even famous people such as Angelina Jolie and David Beckham have some kind of tattoo on their bodies. According to researchers many people tattoo themselves as a sign of individuality(个性).They want to express themselves and show others who they are. Other forms of body art are also on the rise.
Today, tattoos are widely accepted in society. That hasn’t always been the case.Tattoos used to be connected with criminals(罪犯), lower class people or certain groups like sailors and motorcycle gangs. While tattooing was once only for men, more and more women are now getting tattoos.
Tattooing goes way back in history. In many parts of the world, people used tattoos for different purposes. The ancient Romans tattooed their slaves. Native Americans tattooed themselves as a sign of bravery. In Nazi Germany Jews were marked with a number to tell who they were.
Not only has tattooing itself become a big industry, but removing them is also on the increase. Many people just don’t realize that a tattoo lasts forever, and at some time in their lives they may want to get rid of it. The cost of tattooing yourself usually depends on how large the tattoo is or how complex(复杂的) it is. Prices are usually from a hundred to over a thousand dollars.

In 1905, Anna Jarvis began a campaign to convince lawmakers to choose a special day to honor America’s mothers. Many individual states began celebrating Mother’s Day in 1911.However, it was not until 1914 that President Woodrow Wilson finally managed to persuade the U.S.Congress to set aside the second Sunday of May to honor moms.
The former U.S.President announced it as a day to publicly express our love and respect for the mothers of the country.Little did he know that Americans would agree with his wishes by changing Mother’s Day into the third biggest customer spending event of the year—right after winter holidays and the back-to-school season.
This year, Americans expect to spend $21.4 billion,or about $172.22 per person. This is slightly higher than last year’s record of $21.2 billion and is almost a 60% increase in spending since 2009.So what do we spend all the money on?
According to a survey carried out by the National Retail Foundation, a large amount of the money will be spent on jewelry($4.2 billion), meals, and other outdoor activities($4.1 billion).Flowers, accessories, and electronics(电子设备) are the next favorite gift choices, with about $2 billion spent on each.CDs, personal services like spa days, and housewares(家庭用品) are some of the other gifts that moms receive from their loved ones on this special day.
Not sure what to get for Mom? A recent survey made by Offers.com showed that mothers prefer gifts that are personal. This means that you do not have to spend a large sum of money to make your mom happy.A handmade card or a photo of a special memory you shared with her will do the trick. What’s more, set aside all your electronics and spend the day just laughing with your mom.Besides making her day, it will also be fun!

(2019·辽宁葫芦岛六中高一上期中)Have you ever wondered why people drive on a different side of the road? It might seem bizarre that UK drivers stay on the left, but they’re not the only ones.Around 35 percent of the world population do the same, including people in Ireland, Japan, and some Caribbean islands.
Originally, almost everybody traveled on the left side of the road. However their way of transport was quite different from today:Think about four legs instead of four wheels. For Medieval swordsmen on horseback, it made sense to keep to the left to have their right arms closer to their enemies.Getting on or off was also easier from the left side of the horse, and safer done by the side of the road than in the center.
So why did people stop traveling on the left? Things changed in the late 1700s when large wagons(货车) pulled by several pairs of horses were used to transport farm products in France and the United States. The wagon driver sat behind the left horse, with his right arm free to use his whip to keep the horses moving.Since he was sitting on the left position, he wanted other wagons to pass on his left, so he kept to the right side of the road.
The British Government refused to give up their left-hand driving ways, and in 1773 introduced the General Highways Act, which encouraged driving on the left. This was later made law thanks to The Highway Act of 1835.
When Henry Ford showed his Model T in 1908, the driver’s seat was on the left, meaning that cars would have to drive on the right hand side of the road to allow front and back passengers to exit the car onto the roadside. However, British drivers remain on the left, and this is highly unlikely to change.

Dear editor,
For recent years, people in most cities are not allowed to light fireworks and crackers during the Spring Festival. And I’m in favour of the policy.
Firstly, fireworks and crackers will cause air pollution. When a firework is set off, it will produce lots of sulfur dioxide which is very harmful to our environment.Secondly, fireworks and crackers are very dangerous. Not only do fireworks and crackers often cause injury to people but also cause fire accidents.
All in all, fireworks and crackers do lots of harm to people, so we shouldn’t set off fireworks and crackers. On the contrary, we can celebrate our holiday in other ways instead of setting off fireworks and crackers.
Yours,
Li Hua

India is known for many colorful and fun festivals. But none is as popular as the festival of lights, Diwali, which is also called Deepavali.
The celebration begins on October 21st, with Dhanteras. For those who love shopping, this is the best day of the celebration. That’s because in addition to honoring Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth, the day is also considered lucky to buy everything—from gold and silver ornaments(装饰品) to new clothes.
The following day is Kali Chaudas, or Narak Chaturdashi. For some Indians it is celebrated with good food and fireworks. For others, it is the time to drive out bad spirits from homes. No matter how it is celebrated, everyone’s mind is already focused(集中) on the big day that comes after—Diwali!
Diwali begins with a visit to temples where prayers will be given. Then families and friends get together and celebrate by exchanging gifts and sweets. Those who missed the opportunity to buy gold on Dhanteras can make__up__for__it on this equally lucky day.In the evening, households light up their homes with oil lamps and prepare delicious Indian food. Then starts the real fun—fireworks! What makes the displays exciting is that everyone gets to create his/her own show by lighting up their favorite fireworks.
For Indians, Diwali also marks the end of the year. They will celebrate the first day of the New Year the following day.
The final day of the festival honors the relationships between brothers and sisters and is celebrated with more special food and prayers.
For kids, Diwali is like Christmas, except earlier. They get a week’s vacation from school! It is no wonder that most kids consider Diwali the best festival of all.

Before I had my child, I thought I was going to let her fall and fail and make mistakes and learn from them. But from the moment she was born, without really realizing it, I’ve been preventing her from hearing her own inner voice that tells her to “Go for it.”Every time she tried to take a bigger step in the playground, I was in fear.Every time she got curious and ran off to see something, I’d yell,“Watch out.”“Slow down.”“Be careful.”Although I hate parenting terms, I see now that I’ve been a helicopter parent.

I really came to know all this recently during a hike with friends and their particularly adventurous sons. The boys were practically flying down the ramp(斜坡) and I felt myself start to warn my child to slow down. They were running down hills, and my mouth opened to ask her to be careful again. She was listening to her voice, trusting herself to take a chance, and I was about to ruin it.I smiled and watched with pride as she began to really enjoy her time, climbing and moving with ease.

with little cracks running through it是由“with+宾语+宾语补足语”构成的with的复合结构。
Wizard of Oz(excerpt)
Dorothy lived in the midst of the great Kansas prairies, with Uncle Henry, who was a farmer, and Aunt Em, who was the farmer’s wife. Their house was small, for the lumber to build it had to be carried by wagon many miles. There were four walls, a floor and a roof, which made one room; and this room contained a rusty looking cookstove, a cupboard for the dishes, a table, three or four chairs, and two beds. Uncle Henry and Aunt Em had a big bed in one corner, and Dorothy a little bed in another corner. There was no garret at all, and no cellar—except a small hole dug in the ground, called a cyclone cellar, where the family could go in case one of those great whirlwinds arose, mighty enough to crush any building in its path. It was reached by a trapdoor in the middle of the floor, from which a ladder led down into the small, dark hole.
When Dorothy stood in the doorway and looked around, she could see nothing but the great gray prairie on every side. Not a tree nor a house broke the broad sweep of flat country that reached to the edge of the sky in all directions. The sun had baked the plowed land into a gray mass, with little cracks running through it. Even the grass was not green, for the sun had burned the tops of the long blades until they were the same gray color to be seen everywhere. Once the house had been painted, but the sun blistered the paint and the rains washed it away, and now the house was as dull and gray as everything else.
When Aunt Em came there to live she was a young, pretty wife. The sun and wind had changed her, too. They had taken the sparkle from her eyes and left them a sober gray; they had taken the red from her cheeks and lips, and they were gray also. She was thin and gaunt, and never smiled now.

which指代主语black skin,故谓语动词用单数,又因为black skin与cover构成动宾关系,故填is covered。
prevent sb. from doing sth.

plowed land into a gray mass, with little cracks running through it.
with little cracks running through it是由“with+宾语+宾语补足语”构成的with的复合结构。

A
I owe my father a huge thank you! Sure, I need to thank him for all those years of paying my bills, fixing my bikes, and providing a shoulder to cry on. But this year I realized that his contributions to my childhood were much more than that.
I grew up as Daddy’s Little Girl. If I had a problem that needed fixing or a question that needed answering, he was the one I ran to. He helped me get through everything from math homework as a high school student to career choices as a young adult. He always expected that I did my best in whatever I did, and he believed I could succeed in anything I put my mind to. As a result, I learned to hold myself to those same standards. He always showed me unconditional love, which helped me learn to love myself. It was something I’d taken for granted until I realized from talking with my friends that they had no similar view of their self-worth. Having fathers that didn’t believe in them left them to grow up not believing in themselves.
As I was growing up, my father also modeled how a woman should be lavished. He treated my mom with love and respect. As a result, I grew to expect nothing less than that from the men I dated and from the man I would eventually marry. Dad was a living picture of godliness(虔诚), honesty and responsibility. It was only recently that I realized what a deep effect fathers have on their daughters’ lives. That is why I want to thank my dad for the godly example of love that he has been to me throughout my life.
21.From the second paragraph, the author thinks it is the most valuable that ________.
A.her father was very strict with her
B.her father helped her a lot in every way
C.nothing was difficult if her father was on her side
D.father’s trust deeply influenced her self-confidence
根据第二段中的“Having fathers that didn’t believe in them left them to grow up not believing in themselves.”
22.What does the underlined word “lavished” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Loved. B.Respected.
C.Treated. D.Spoiled.
根据第三段中的“As I was growing up, my father also modeled how a woman should be lavished. He treated my mom with love and respect.”
23.The feeling the author wants to express to her father in this text is ________.
A.grateful B.sad
C.proud D.pitiful
B
Animals, including insects, do not have a language like ours. They do not talk to each other in words and sentences. But if we watch them, we can see that they do have ways of communicating with each other.
Can you see the rabbits’ tail? When rabbits see the white tail moving up and down, they will run. The rabbit has reminded them of potential dangers without making a sound. It has given them a signal.
Many other animals use this kind of language. When a cobra(眼镜蛇) is angry, it raises its “hood” and makes itself look fierce. This warns other animals. When a bee has found some food, it goes back to its home. It cannot tell the other bees where the food is by speaking to them, but it does a little dance in the air. This tells the bees where the food is.
Some animals say things by making sounds. A dog barks, for example, when a stranger comes near. A cat purrs(发出呼噜声) when pleased. Some birds make several different sounds, each with its own meaning. Sometimes we human beings speak in the same way. We make sounds like “Oh” or “Ah” when we are frightened or pleased or when we drop something on our toes.
But we have something that no animals have—a large number of words which have the meanings of things, actions, feelings or ideas. We are able to give each other all kinds of different information in words and sentences, which no other animals can do. No other animals have so wonderful a language as we have.
24.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A.Animals do have a language like that of human beings.
B.Bees communicate with each other by dancing.
C.Some animals can use words.
D.A dog barks to show its friendliness.
根据第三段中的“It cannot tell the other bees where the food is by speaking to them, but it does a little dance in the air. This tells the bees where the food is.”
25.A rabbit uses its tail to ________.
A.warn other rabbits of danger
B.tell other rabbits where the food is
C.make itself look fierce
D.help itself to run fast
根据第二段中的“The rabbit has reminded them of potential dangers without making a sound.”
26.What is this passage mainly about?
A.Human’s language is more wonderful than animals’ language.
B.People should pay attention to animals’ body language and sounds.
C.Animals have their own ways to communicate with each other.
D.Animals are smarter than we think.
根据第一段最后一句“But if we watch them, we can see that they do have ways of communicating with each other.”
C
Do you jump out of bed early, wide awake and ready to start your day? If so, you would be called an “early bird”. Perhaps you hate the sound of your alarm clock(闹钟) each morning and have little energy until afternoon. If so, you’re probably a “night owl”.
Most people can be divided into such two groups, but what makes us this way? And is one better than the other? There are different opinions.
Usually, early risers have been praised as hard-working while those who prefer to get up late are considered lazy. Most__people__believe__the__early__bird__catches__the__worm.
Yet some scientists now believe “night owls” can really focus(集中) longer and produce more than early risers.
Research has found that the early bird does not always get the worm. In a Belgian study, both “morning people” and “evening people” were watched during their normal asleep and awake routines(常规). After 10 hours of being awake, the “evening people” became more alert(思维敏捷的). However, the “morning people” became sleepy and less focused. Researchers believe the reason for this difference is that night owls receive a last-minute increase from their brains. This added energy allows them to stay alert for longer periods of time.
Environment, lifestyle, activities and childhood routines all may have an effect on sleeping habits, yet genetics(遗传学) may play the biggest role.
It is possible to change your sleeping habits through regular bedtimes, early exercise and by avoiding midnight snacks. But if you’re happy rising early or staying up late, you’re probably doing what works best for your own personal body clock.
27.The author introduces the subject by ________.
A.telling an interesting story
B.giving different opinions

In 2002, an Australian man went to his friend’s 21st birthday party. He got drunk, fell off some steps and cut his lip. He took a picture of his injuries and shared it with his friends online. “And sorry about the focus,” he wrote, “it was a selfie(自拍).” That was the first recorded use of the word “selfie”, according to some experts at Oxford Dictionaries.
Oxford Dictionaries declared “selfie” Word of the Year for 2013, in honor of the term having taken over the world thanks to millions of smart phone self-portraits and the resulting shares on social media. In recent years, the act of taking a picture of oneself with a mobile phone, placing the subject center-stage, has won great popularity with everyone from Britain’s Queen Elizabeth Ⅱ to US with former President Barack Obama joining in.
But the rise of selfie photography in some of the world’s most beautiful, dangerous places has also inspired a lot of risk-taking behavior, such as hanging from a tall building, standing in front of a rushing train and crossing a busy street. People who get addicted will never stop taking selfies, completely ignoring where they are. In fact, there have been several reports about people losing their lives while taking selfies. Several governments have now begun treating selfie as a serious threat to safety, warning visitors to pay attention to the dangers when taking selfies.
“Walt Disney World is also banning selfie-sticks from its theme parks because selfie-sticks have become a growing safety concern for our guests,” Disney World spokeswoman Kim Prunty said. Under the new policy, guests will be checked for the equipment during the routine bag check that happens near the parks’ entrances.
