How to Be Good at Sports
If sports are something that interests you, it is reasonable(合理的) that you would want to be good at them. Here are some tips that can help you become a good player.
Set ambitious(有雄心的) but realistic goals. If you want to be great at sports, you need to set your aims high. This does not mean being unrealistic. Instead, you should take a look at what you are, and figure out where you think you would like to be. Give yourself a suitable amount of time to achieve that goal.
Be patient. Skills are often slow to build. Impatient athletes tend to make poor ones. If you’re not patient, you’ll try to jump into advanced techniques long before you’re ready. You’ll feel discouraged(泄气的) when you don’t see immediate improvement.
Join a sports team. Most of the sports teams are free to join. If you go to school, you should go for team tryouts when they’re happening. If you’re not in school, you can find a sports club online.
Accept criticism(批评). When you play sports, you will unavoidably receive criticism, whether from a coach or other players. You need to take most of it with a grain of salt. Are they angry because you missed a pass, or do they sincerely want to help you improve? In a lot of cases, you can use criticism as motivation(动力) to get better.
Practice until your skills become second nature. A skill becomes mastered when you’re able to do it without thinking. Given enough time and practice, a skill will eventually fall under this category. When in a game, you won’t have time to think everything through, so practice until it’s all automatic.

Dear Mary,

Remember you said you’d like to come over to the UK sometime this year? Well,I was thinking that this year you might like to come to the Edinburgh Festival with me in August.I’ve got an aunt with a flat in the city centre who could put us up.
Do you know much about the festival? It’s very famous—the biggest, most popular arts festival in the world! People need to relax and enjoy themselves. One way they can have a good time is to watch a baseball game or another sports event.Even thousands of years ago, groups of people gathered to watch skilled athletes.
Over 2,000 years ago in Greece, certain days in the year were festival days. These were holidays when people stopped work and enjoyed themselves. They liked to watch athletes take part in races and other games of skill.
The most important festival was held every four years at the town of Olympia. It was held in honour of the Greek god Zeus. For five days, athletes from all parts of the Greek world took part in the Olympic Games. At the Olympic Games, people could watch them box, run, jump and so on.There was a relay race between two teams of men in which a lighted torch(火炬) was passed from runner to runner. The Olympic Games were thought to be so important that cities which were at war with one another had to stop fighting.People were allowed to travel to the games freely.Thousands of people came to Olympia from cities in Greece and from its colonies(殖民地) in Africa, Asia and Italy. They met as friends to cheer their favourite athletes and to enjoy themselves.

Dear Mary,
How are you? I saw you posted some wonderful photos of the coastline near your hometown. You’re really getting into your photography! Right now I’m taking a break from social media(媒体) to write you an email.
There are lots of things going on—art exhibitions(展览),concerts of all kinds, modern dance,a book festival, etc. The thing it’s most famous for is the newest and most exciting theatre.People come from all over the world and perform(表演) in their own language.
In Scotland you have the best of both worlds: culture and wild land. After the festival,we could hire(租) a car and go up to some of the islands off the west coast, like Skye. The weather can be changeable in August, but the landscape(风景) is beautiful, with empty beaches and rocky mountains. It’s the perfect place for you to take photos.Afterwards,we could head back to the east coast and visit my friend Rob in St.Andrews.It’s really pretty and Rob’s enjoyable to be with. You’d get on well with him.
So,why don’t you have a think about it and then get back to me? Take your time; there’s no rush.

Mount Hood is the highest mountain in Oregon, a state in the western United States. At 3,400 meters it is attractive(有吸引力的) to many people, some of whom, of course, run into trouble. Each year 25 to 50 people have accidents or get lost on Mount Hood and require rescue.Although most of these are understandable accidents, a few result from careless risk-taking.
In one recent case, three experienced climbers went hiking(远足) in the middle of a snowstorm in December. Most hikers climb Mount Hood in May or June when the weather conditions are favorable. But in December, the mountain is covered in snow and ice.Winds up to 135 kilometers per hour blow the snow around making it difficult to see.Temperatures can drop below freezing. As one rescue worker put it,“What were they thinking? They were just asking for it.”
During a rescue a few years ago, a helicopter full of rescue workers crashed(坠毁) and the rescue workers were almost killed.Linda Carle, who lives in the Mount Hood area, asks,“If someone made a poor decision, why should rescue teams have to risk their lives to save them? Why do people take unnecessary risks and do things that aren’t right if they know that they can get into trouble?”
Most of the Mount Hood rescue workers are either volunteers(志愿者) or part of the local sheriff’s department. There is no charge for these rescues. It is the taxpayers(纳税人) who pay the bill.Linda Carle suggests that people who take careless risks and require rescue should be charged for the rescue. She feels it is only fair that costs for things like damaged helicopters and medical care for rescuers be paid for by the people who took the risks. What would you do if you were the local sheriff at Mount Hood?

Sunsets are among the most beautiful in the world and the island is a paradise(天堂)!”my friend Laura raved about her trip in Santorini last year. With her encouraging words, I bought our tickets to Athens, Santorini and Crete.
A sunny Saturday afternoon welcomed us in Athens.During the first few days, Kathleen and I tried a lot of unknown-to-us foods. And then came Tuesday. The moment we landed in Santorini, a big storm broke out.Santorini, normally a beautiful and popular tourist destination(目的地), was freezing, rainy and empty. With rain beating our faces, Kathleen and I headed for our hotel.
“This isn’t how I want to spend my vacation, Mom,”Kathleen said sadly.“Maybe Crete isn’t experiencing the same storm. Can we fly out later today?”My daughter thought up a clever idea. But we couldn’t leave. We’d just arrived.Payments for the hotel would be lost and the last-minute air tickets would be expensive.“Let’s not decide right now,” I suggested.
During the next few days, we drove around though it rained hard.On the night at a restaurant named Poseidon, we waited and waited for dinner.“Your dinner will be out shortly. The cook is busy studying something beautiful,” a man who looked like a waiter said. When he saw our puzzled look, he explained,“He went out for a smoke, saw two beautiful ladies and began to chat...” We suddenly started laughing.
I realized some change had been happening since our arrival.“You know, Mom, you can’t live a positive life with a negative(消极的) mind,” my daughter said.We let go of our worries and enjoyed our trip in the following days.

One possible version:
As the proverb goes, “No one knows the value of health until he loses it.” I understand it exactly because I wasn’t healthy when I was young. However, that improved after I played ping-pong.
At the start, I was too tired to continue, but I was persuaded not to give up by my parents. Gradually, I realized that it is of great benefit to my health.
By playing ping-pong every day I can keep myself full of energy every day. Without it, I will feel tired and I can’t finish my tasks efficiently. I think it has become and will be a part of my life.

As early as 1894,the newly-formed International Olympic Committee(IOC) considered ice skating as a possibility for the first modern Olympic Games which would be held in 1896.
In 1911, a member of the IOC suggested that winter sports should be staged as part of the 1912 Olympics in Helsinki. Some opposed the idea.At last, the IOC decided to hold Winter Olympic Games in 1916.However, World War Ⅰ broke out in 1914.After 1920,the national governing bodies for winter sports in several countries began talking about the possibility of a separate Winter Olympics.
The town of Chamonix, in the French Alps, planned to hold a winter sports festival in 1924; at the same time Paris was to host the Olympics. The Marquis de Polignac,a member of the IOC,suggested that the festival be formally recognized as the Winter Olympic Games. The IOC didn’t go that far, but did agree that Chamonix could call its festival an “Olympic winter carnival”.
The festival drew 258 athletes from 16 countries to compete in bobsledding(雪橇车比赛),figure skating, hockey, Nordic skiing and speed skating.Charles Jewtraw from the United States won the first gold medal,in the 500-meter speed skating, but the festival’s hero was Claus Thunberg from Finland. He won five medals, three of which were gold, in speed skating.
Weather has often been a major story at the Winter Olympics, and so it was at Chamonix. The festival opened with rain and unseasonably warm temperature that turned snow and ice to mud. Then temperature dropped as far as 25 below zero and the mud became ice.
Despite the weather, more than 10,000 people showed up.At its yearly meeting in 1925,the IOC recognized the Chamonix festival as the first Winter Olympics and decided that the Winter Games would be held every four years, just like the Summer Olympics.

I traveled to London, England in the spring of 2016.Actually, I traveled with CAPA International Education on a study program. At that time, I did a full three-month program but I traveled on weekends and during breaks.
I used to live in a small town outside New York. The idea of big cities has always excited me and I wanted to take advantage of that once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. It was a great opportunity for me to see how independent I could be in another country, because I hope to travel a lot more in the future.
I lived in a flat in Ealing Broadway with several other students from different American schools. The biggest surprise I found there was the culture shock I experienced.I had expected traveling to London to be an easy transition(转变) for me because I thought their culture was close to that of America. But you know the language and the people were greatly different from what I had expected. They had different accents. In fact, they were noisy and more free-thinking than most Americans I knew.
However, I tried to take part in their giant Chinese New Year celebration in Trafalgar Square.I went to several Jewish society holiday celebrations and actively participated in any cultural activities I knew at that time.It was great to be able to truly put myself in their culture. These are experiences I couldn’t get anywhere else.

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer(excerpt)
“What’s gone with that boy, I wonder? You TOM!” No answer.
The old lady pulled her spectacles down and looked over them about the room; then she put them up and looked out under them. She seldom or never looked through them for so small a thing as a boy; they were her state pair, the pride of her heart, and were built for “style”, not service—she could have seen through a pair of stove-lids just as well. She looked perplexed for a moment, and then said, not fiercely, but still loud enough for the furniture to hear:“Well, I lay if I get hold of you I’ll—” She did not finish, for by this time she was bending down and punching under the bed with the broom, and so she needed breath to punctuate the punches with. She resurrected nothing but the cat.
“I never did see the beat of that boy!” She went to the open door and stood in it and looked out among the tomato vines and “jimpson” weeds that constituted the garden. No Tom. So she lifted up her voice at an angle calculated for distance and shouted:“Y-o-u-u Tom!” There was a slight noise behind her and she turned just in time to seize a small boy by the slack of his roundabout and arrest his flight.
“There! I might‘a’ thought of that closet. What you been doing in there?”
“Nothing.”
“Nothing! Look at your hands. And look at your mouth. What is that truck?”
“I don’t know, aunt.”
“Well, I know. It’s jam—that’s what it is. Forty times I’ve said if you didn’t let that jam alone I’d skin you. Hand me that switch.”
The switch hovered in the air—the peril was desperate—“My! Look behind you, aunt!”,《

When I was a little girl, I remember that when my dad was repairing something, he would ask me to hold the hammer, so we would have time for a conversation with each other. I never saw my dad drinking or taking a night out. All he did after work was taking care of his family.
I grew up and left home for college and since then, my dad had been calling me every Sunday morning. And when I bought a house several years later, my dad painted it by himself in the fierce summer heat. All he asked was to talk to him, but I was too busy in those days.
Four years ago, my dad visited me. He spent many hours putting together a swing for my daughter. He asked me to have a talk with him, but I had to prepare for a trip that weekend.
One Sunday morning we had a telephone talk as usual. I noticed that my dad had forgotten some things that we discussed lately. I was in a hurry, so our conversation was short. Several hours later that day I received a call: My father was in hospital. Immediately I bought a plane ticket and on my way I was thinking about all the occasions I missed to have a talk with my dad. By the time I arrived at the hospital, my father had passed away. Now it was he who did not have time for a conversation with me. I realized how little I knew about my dad, his deepest thoughts and his dreams.
After his death I learned much more about him and even more about myself. All he ever wanted was my time. And now he has all my attention every single day.

Can you swim? Do you like swimming? Yes? Well, how can you learn to swim? I think the best way is to go into the water and learn. I’m afraid you’ll never learn to swim just by reading books about swimming or looking at others swimming. It’s the same with the English study. We must practice, practice and practice.
Listening and speaking are very important for beginners. The children in English-speaking countries first listen to others. Then they try to imitate and speak. We can listen to English programs on radio. You may just understand a few words. It doesn’t matter. Just be relaxed, and try to catch every word.
Somebody may be a good listener. But he dare not speak. He’s afraid of making mistakes. You know we sometimes make mistakes when we speak Chinese. Don’t be afraid. We must be brave. If you really want to learn English well, you must try to speak with everyone so long as he knows English. Whether you know him or not is not important. When there’s nobody to talk with, you can talk to yourself in English. It’s interesting and also a good way to practice your spoken English. Remember, the more you speak, the fewer mistakes you’ll make.
Reading and writing are more important for senior school students. First we must choose the books we’re interested in. A lot of reading will improve your language sense. This is the most important.
Keep writing English diaries. We can also write English articles. You may even post them to English magazines. Don’t be afraid of failure. Failure is the mother of success. Easier said than done. Well, let’s do more practice from now on. I’m sure you’ll learn English well in this way.

Making friends is a skill like many other skills. It improves with practice. If you want to meet people and make friends, you must be willing to take some action. You must first go where there are people. You won’t make friends staying home alone. Join a club or a group. Talking with those who like the same things as you do is much easier. Or join someone in some activities. Many people are nervous when talking to new people. After all meeting strangers means facing the unknown. And it’s human nature to feel a bit uncomfortable about the unknown. Most of our fears about dealing with new people come from doubts about ourselves. We imagine other people are judging us or finding us too tall or too short, too this or too that. But don’t forget that they must be feeling the same way. Try to accept yourself as you are and try to put the other person at ease. You’ll both feel more comfortable.
Try to act self-confidently even if you don’t feel that way. When you enter a room full of strangers, such as a new classroom, walk tall and straight, look directly at other people and smile.
If you see someone you’d like to speak to, say something. Don’t wait for the other person to start a conversation.
Just meeting someone new does not mean that you will make friends with that person—friendship is based on mutual liking and “give and take”. It takes time and effort to develop.

Maybe you are an average student. 31.________ This is not necessarily so, however. Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to. Here’s how:
Plan your time carefully. When planning your work, you should make a list of things that you have to do. After making the list, you should make a schedule(时间表) of your time. First, decide your time for eating, sleeping, dressing, etc. Then decide a good, regular time for studying. 32.________ A weekly schedule may not solve all your problems, but it will force you to realize what is happening to your time.
Find a good place to study. Look around the house for a good study area. Keep this space, which may be a desk or simply a corner of your room, free of everything but study materials. No games, radios, or television. When you sit down to study, concentrate on the subject.
Make good use of your time in class. 33.________ Listening carefully in class means less work later. Taking notes will help you remember what the teacher says.
Study regularly. When you get home from school, go over your notes, review the important points that your teacher is going to discuss the next day and read that material. 34.________ If you do these things regularly, the material will become more meaningful, and you’ll remember it longer.

Dear__Tom,
I’m__so__glad__to__know__that__you__will__come__and__study__in__our__school__
as__an__exchange__student__for__one__year. I’m ready to give you some suggestions that can help you get used to the life and study here as quickly as possible.
When it comes to the life in our school, first of all, it must be made clear that we should never be late for school or leave school before it’s over. What’s more, we’re requested to wear school uniforms and to keep our schoolyard clean and tidy. In addition, students are not allowed to bring mobile phones to the school. Finally, when you’re walking or riding on the road, please remember to keep to the right, which is quite different from England. As for study, there are many subjects in the senior high school, so I suggest that you should arrange your time properly so that you can finish the homework on time. If you could spare some time to preview the lessons, it would be much better.
I hope my advice can help you. Looking forward to your arrival.
Yours,
Li__Hua
第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Jenny was the only child in her home. She had a quarrel with her mother that__afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily. She couldn’t help weeping sorrowfully when she thought of the__scolding__from__her__mother. Having wandered aimlessly in__the__street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat, but it was not even possible for her, since she had nothing with her. She stood beside a stand for a while, watching the middle-aged seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she sighed and had to leave.
The seller behind the stand noticed the young girl and asked, “Hey, girl, do you want to have the noodles?”
“Oh, yes...but I don’t have money on me...” she replied.
“That’s nothing. I’ll treat you today,” said the man. “Come in.”
The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, whose smell was so attractive. As she was eating, Jenny cried silently.
“What is it?” asked the man kindly.
“Nothing, actually I was just touched by your kindness!” said Jenny as she wiped her tears. “Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother drove me out of the house. She showed no care for me. She is so merciless compared to a stranger!”
Hearing the words, the seller smiled,__“Girl, do you really think so? I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you number the times she cooked for you? Have you expressed your gratitude to her?”
Jenny sat there, speechless and numb with shock; she remembered her mother’s familiar__face and weathered hands. “Why did I not think of that? A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel indebted, but I have never thanked my mum for what she has done for me.”
On the way home, Jenny made up her mind to make an apology to her mother for her rudeness as soon as she arrived home.

Paragraph 1:
Approaching the doorway, Jenny took a deep breath. When she knocked at the door, she found the door was locked and her mother was not in. Tired and sad, she sat down in front of the house. “Where could my mother be?” she wondered. “Was she still angry with me?” Again, the scene of the quarrel appeared in her mind. She remembered her rudeness to her mother. Realizing that all the__scolding__from__her__mother was due to the fact that her mother really cared about her, she felt rather ashamed, and tears began to roll down her cheeks.
Paragraph 2:
A gentle touch on her hair called her mind back. She raised her head and saw the familiar__face of her mother. “Here you come! I’ve been looking for you,” she said, tired and relieved. Jenny couldn’t help throwing herself into her mother’s arms. “Mum, I’m so sorry and thank you for all you have done for me,” she expressed her sincere apology and great gratitude. Hearing this, her mother smiled,__patting her back gently.
