文档简介

你认为80天周游世界可能吗?这是不是一个科幻故事呢?让我们在下面的短文中寻找答案吧!
Around the World in 80 Ways
How can you travel around the world without even leaving the earth’s surface(表面)? For many of us,it sounds like an impossible mission, but an eco-friendly British couple has done just that. They have travelled around the world for 297 days without getting on a single plane.
“It feels like a historic achievement, following in the footsteps of great travellers before the plane was invented(发明),” said the couple.
Tom Fewins, 32, and Lara Lockwood, 30, used 78 buses, 61 trains, 34 cars, 18 boats, 6 bicycles, 2 mopeds and an elephant. They wanted to prove that tourists can see the world without producing a large carbon footprint(碳足迹).
So they spent 10 months travelling 44,609 miles through 18 countries on land and sea. They believed that they used less than 3,000 kg of carbon dioxide, compared(比较) with six times that amount if they had used planes.“We proved that you can still be well travelled without damaging the environment,” said Tom. The pair, who returned home to England two weeks ago, travelled very slowly, taking time to enjoy what was happening around them.
The most difficult part of the trip was when they had to persuade the captain of a 100,000-ton cargo ship to take them from Hong Kong to Long Beach in California.
Tom proposed(求婚) to Lara when they crossed the International Date Line in the Pacific. Lara was over the moon, “It was very romantic. He got down on one knee and I had no hesitation in saying yes.”

I’d been thinking of taking a course on scuba-diving(水肺潜水) for months, but wasn’t sure because I was afraid of snakes—sea snakes. Just thinking about it made me sick.
But then, I wanted to know why people loved it so much. They all said that under the sea was like a totally different world, yet a beautiful one. And because of that, I decided to take the risk and try to face my fear.
So, after taking a private course from my diving instructor, Mbak Vita, I went to Sepa Island with her, to take the final exam.
First dive, 12 meters in depth.“What am I doing?”I asked myself.“What if something bad happened?”I tried hard not to panic and told myself to keep a good thought,“It’s gonna be a wonderful experience. Just do it!”Then I went down. My heart beat fast and my ears hurt as I went deeper. I followed Vita’s instructions closely until I felt comfortable to explore the sea.
Suddenly all around me was green. It felt like I was living in a green world! I saw some corals(珊瑚), big ones, and lots of beautiful fish hiding in the sand.
I was enjoying the beauty all around me when my instructor waved at me with her hand holding a pink flipper(橡胶蹼).“That flipper looks familiar,”I thought. Yes! That was my flipper! I didn’t realize that my right flipper had managed to get away from my right foot!
So, that was the first dive. In total, we dove 5 times in 2 days. We managed to dive up to 18 meters in depth. The next dives were smooth and for sure I didn’t lose my flipper! I was so happy to see different types of fish swimming in front of me as if I was invisible(不可见的).It was indeed so beautiful and peaceful down there. Now I can see why people love diving under the sea.

Without going to college, Andy worked his way to the top. He became the manager of the dairy department of Safeway. He earned the nickname Mr.Cheese, which eventually turned into Grandpa Cheese among the family. He has taught me a lot and here’s what he has learned in his 99 years.

Try not to take yourself so seriously. Don’t ever be afraid to be your true self. Your life is delicate, and if you fail to take care of yourself properly, you’ll spoil.
Life is a gift that you must unwrap(打开). It’s up to you to determine if what’s inside will lead you to happiness or dismay(沮丧). You have the power to make that decision for yourself.
All of above come from Grandpa Cheese. If you’re wondering what Grandpa Cheese is up to these days, he’s riding his motorized scooter(踏板车) around Benicia, CA, and “planning on what I’m going to do when I start to get old,” he says.

My grandfather Andy Anderson is 99. His life story is one for the big screen—he met my grandmother on a Saturday, and they married on the following Saturday. They stayed together until my grandma died 67 years later.
Without going to college, Andy worked his way to the top. He became the manager of the dairy department of Safeway. He earned the nickname Mr.Cheese, which eventually turned into Grandpa Cheese among the family. He has taught me a lot and here’s what he has learned in his 99 years.
Always maintain a good sense of humor. Find something humorous in every single situation. Never be too good to start at the bottom. Exercise every day, even when you don’t feel like it. Don’t spend more money than you make. Save your money now and spend it later.
You must be able to forgive, even if it’s difficult to do. Love is not always easy; sometimes you have to work at it. Your family is the most precious thing you will ever have in life.
If you’re faced with a problem, don’t delay trying to figure it out. But if there’s no way to figure it out, you have to forget about it. Make sure you’re doing what you love; don’t be afraid to follow those dreams you have for yourself.

An Unforgettable Trip
Today, I had a school trip with my classmates and teachers. We met at the school gate at eight and then we set off by bus.
First, we visited the Great Wall. When we got there, it was nine. We started to climb the great wonder of ancient China immediately and felt how great the ancient people are. That was the first time that we had visited it, so we were very excited. We took many photos on the Great Wall. Then we had lunch there, after which we left for the Fragrant Hills. When we got there, we were amazed at the beautiful maple leaves, which made us not want to leave. We stayed at the top of the mountain for an hour and at five we returned by bus.
What an unforgettable trip!

I visited Aruba last week. On the first day,I mainly enjoyed comfortable sunshine on the beaches there. But I needed more than sunshine and sand to fill my week.
I rented a car the next day. One of my first stops that day was the Alto Vista Chapel,a historic north-side Roman Catholic church. Just as I entered it,a colourful “party bus”filled with singing tourists pulled into the parking lot, ending the silence. So I left soon.
From the church I made my way to the California Lighthouse, named for the steamship California that sank nearby in 1891.After spending some time there,I went to La Trattoria El Faro Blanco,an Italian restaurant that sits on top of the hill and offers scenic views.
I love golfing,so I wasn’t going on vacation without spending a day on the courses. The Tierra del Sol Country Club is for golfing on the islands located at its northwest point. Opened in 1995,it is a beautiful place with views of the sea and the California Lighthouse. I spent a full day there.
To completely escape from the other tourists,I booked a four-hour jeep tour for the fourth day. I went to the Arikok National Park, which covers nearly 20 percent of the islands. I stood on a cliff and looked down on a natural pool that was formed inside volcanic rock(火山岩).It was amazing.
My final night was spent at Madame Janette Restaurant.Friends who had been to Aruba told me I had to go there. I dined(用餐) there while listening to a local musician performing the Beatles’ While My Guitar Gently Weeps. It was so good and the crowd demanded more.

“I wish I grew up back in your childhood,” my 14-year-old son said to me. He has an iPhone that is newer than mine. He has many kind friends. There are many forms of entertainment today and he can find nearly all of human knowledge through the Internet. However, he wishes he grew up in the 1970s and 1980s.“Why?”I asked. My son’s answer involves freedom, risk and over-involvement(参与) of adults in kids’ lives.
My son has heard his dad tell stories of summer days at the river with his friends. They would jump off the wooden bridge into the water below. My son lives just a few blocks from the same river and the same bridge. The town hasn’t changed, but times have changed. My son knows that if he and his friends tried to jump off the bridge and swim as his dad did many times, the most likely outcome(结果) is that some kind adults would call the police.
At 14, an age at which, in generations past, most boys were contributing to the well-being of their families by working, and my son is ready, able and willing to put his skills and strength to the test in the real world. However, he, like so many other American boys and girls, is prevented by a culture that seems to have raised safety to the highest regard, without considering how a lack of risk might negatively affect kids’ development.
Let kids try some risky things—cutting the lawn; using tools and sharp knives; starting a fire; cooking—under the supervision(监管) of an adult who tells them safety rules. Allow your kids to gradually take more responsibility. A kid who helps prepare and cook meals will be better prepared to cook independently.
Above all, encourage and praise your kids’ determination. Their desire to deal with challenges and take risks will serve them well in the years to come.

Pride and Prejudice (excerpt)
It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.
However little known the feelings or views of such a man may be on his first entering a neighbourhood, this truth is so well fixed in the minds of the surrounding families, that he is considered as the rightful property of some one or other of their daughters.
“My dear Mr Bennet,” said his lady to him one day, “have you heard that Netherfield Park is let at last?”
Mr Bennet replied that he had not.
“But it is,” returned she; “for Mrs Long has just been here, and she told me all about it.”
Mr Bennet made no answer.
“Do not you want to know who has taken it?” cried his wife impatiently.
“You want to tell me, and I have no objection to hearing it.”
This was invitation enough.
“Why, my dear, you must know, Mrs Long says that Netherfield is taken by a young man of large fortune from the north of England; that he came down on Monday in a chaise and four to see the place, and was so much delighted with it that he agreed with Mr Morris immediately; that he is to take possession before Michaelmas, and some of his servants are to be in the house by the end of next week.”

I have never had a birthday party before, so at this“ripe old”age, I decided to throw one for myself.Approximately 20 people confirmed that they were coming.I splurged(挥霍) in the $1 store to buy decorations and plates.I had a tiny budget in order to feed all of them.
I sat there, waiting and thinking.Although all of my“friends” said they were coming, no one showed up!The celebration was supposed to start at 12 noon. Here it was, 4:00 pm, and still, no one was here. The expensive cake was melting, the food on the BBQ was burnt beyond recognition.I cried, and it was really hard not to cry.
I decided to sit back and relax, reflecting on the wonderful things that I did have, and read Chicken Soup for the Soul. All of a sudden, I heard a screech and a roar of an engine, just outside my front door.Mr Kenny, apparently, did everything he could to show up.I cried and wept in his arms: I’m not worth anything! He brushed my tears, held me tightly, and said the magical words:“I will always be your friend! We were bound to meet each other!”
He had so many challenges and difficulties in the past couple of weeks;so did I.However, sitting outside under a blanket of clear blue skies, laughing and talking, I felt that I was truly blessed!I thought that my father in the heaven sent him to me in my darkest hour, when I wanted to give up this world!
Yes, life can be beautiful.I don’t know if Kenny realised that he saved my life last night.Just a kind act:taking time out of his very busy schedule, making me smile, and just warm, huge hugs!Sometimes that’s all it takes!
Thank you, Kenny, for saving my life, for the smiles, and for making me look forward to tomorrow!

Everything, no matter how great it is, will always have its problems. If you ever find yourself in an argument(争论) about renewable(可再生的) energy with someone who needs to receive more education, do your part for the environment by giving the following facts.
Argument one: renewable energy is expensive. This argument is only a surface truth. For a large house or small business, to start using renewable energy can be expensive at first. There’s a lot of equipment(设备) to buy. However, in the following 10 or 20 years, you’ll never see another power bill again. If you make lots of energy, you might even be able to sell it back to the power company.
Argument two: renewable energy takes up a lot of space. If you have a small yard, people might have told you that you’ll never be able to fit solar energy equipment in there. Even if you can’t, look at land for sale close to your place. If your neighbors are interested in going green, you might be able to go in together to buy a piece of land and build a large solar farm you can share. Many houses can benefit from one solar farm. Not everyone needs a big yard.
Argument three: renewable energy isn’t necessary. Renewable energy allows us to power our lives without using up anything. We don’t need to do much—we can just make receptacles(容器) for the free, renewable energy that already surrounds us. When you think about it, it’s almost like wasting energy if we don’t collect it.
Argument four: renewable energy isn’t as efficient(效率高的). A UK based study on renewable energy actually found that it was a lot more efficient than traditional energy sources. Since it produces almost no waste heat, while most other energy sources can produce more than half of their production in waste heat, it’s safe to say that using the energy we already have in our daily life can be more than twice as efficient.
【解题导语】 本文是一篇议论文。文章讨论了使用可再生能源的必要性。
24.Why did the author write the text?
A.To develop arguments against renewable energy.
B.To explain why renewable energy should be used.
C.To teach people to make full use of renewable energy.
D.To show the importance of protecting the environment.
B 解析:推理判断题。由第一段中的If you ever find yourself in an argument(争论) about renewable(可再生的) energy with someone who needs to receive more education, do your part for the environment by giving the following facts.可知,作者写这篇文章是为了解释为什么应该使用可再生能源。
25.What’s the weak point of using renewable energy?
A.It’s mostly for small businesses.
B.It can be used for 20 years at most.
C.It takes up lots of money at the beginning.
D.It’s sometimes not enough for daily use.
C 解析:细节理解题。由第二段中的For a large house or small business, to start using renewable energy can be expensive at first. There’s a lot of equipment(设备) to buy.可知,使用可再生能源初期投资比较大。
26.What does the author suggest when your yard is too small?
A.Make your solar farm to a smaller size.
B.Raise money with other people to buy land.
C.Move your family to a place with a bigger yard.
D.Put the solar energy equipment in your neighbor’s yard.
B 解析:细节理解题。由第三段中的If your neighbors are interested in going green, you might be able to go in together to buy a piece of land and build a large solar farm you can share.可知,如果自己家的院子不大,可以跟邻居们一起筹钱买一块空地来放置太阳能设备。
27.In what way is renewable energy efficient?
A.Almost all of its production is usable.
B.It can produce heat in a very short time.
C.It produces more power than power companies.
D.Its waste heat is a bit less than traditional energy’s.
A 解析:细节理解题。由最后一段中的Since it produces almost no waste heat, while most other energy sources can produce more than half of their production in waste heat可知,可再生能源的利用率很高,几乎不会产生废弃热量。

Do you think the United Kingdom and the United States are alike?Winston Churchill once joked that the people of Britain and the people of America are separated only by their language.Do you think that is true? The British and the Americans both speak English as the official language. However, each uses some different words. We Americans are similar to the British. After all, our country was once owned by the UK, so we have a lot in common. But there are many differences between us.
The UK has a king or queen, and the leader of the government is the Prime Minister. The US has no kings or queens. Our leader is the President.

Driving in a car is very different in the UK.They drive on the left side of the road.We drive on the right. What we call the hood of the car, the British call the “bonnet”.British cars run on “petrol”, which we call gasoline.
In our everyday life, we do many of the same things as the British. But we describe them differently.A young mother here might push a baby in a baby carriage.A British mum pushes a “pram”.The British watch “telly”, while we watch TV.We like to eat French fries, but the British call them “chips”.Millions of Americans drink coffee, but most British prefer tea.
So we are different in many ways. But we stay friendly anyway.

I love to read before I go to sleep. It usually makes me feel calm. But a big part of this depends on what I read. I love to read Oor Wullie and The Broons. Very often I’m smiling before I go to sleep.
I decide to write about this in a blog because I find that so many of us go to sleep with stress. Before we go to sleep, we may run over the day in our minds, and worry about tomorrow. We also may watch the news on TV, read the news on our smart phones or tablets, or even answer work emails. But the news is rarely proclaiming(宣告) all the good that’s happening in the world and work emails make us feel that we’re still at work. All these things may leave us a stressful sleep.
Oor Wullie and The Broons are not the only things I ever read at night. I sometimes read novels but, with the odd exception, I mostly avoid anything that is too mentally taxing or stimulating late at night unless it’s something that inspires me or is clearly helpful in my life.
And even if I do read something mentally stimulating, when I feel myself getting tired I lay that book down and pick up a trusty old Oor Wullie or The Broons for the last 10 or 15 minutes. Doing this makes my mind quiet and helps ensure I get a peaceful night’s sleep. Reading about Wullie or Maw and Paw Broon is like a comfort blanket for me.
I’d suggest you find light-hearted reading as a comfort blanket at bedtime, especially if you find yourself stressed or depressed a lot of the time, or if you find difficulty winding at the end of a day. It is the thing that can gently turn your attention towards lightness and ease.
If your material makes you laugh, then you may feel even better. Several studies show that laughter boosts happy chemicals in the brain, it strengthens the immune system, it’s good for the heart, and it is most definitely good for mental health. It even helps us improve our relationships.
And if you do happen to pick up a copy of Oor Wullie or The Broons, I hope you find it just as entertaining as I do.

Have you ever had to overcome an extreme challenge in your life?
My teenage years had been insane. From schoolwork to athletics, I had always been running around.Everything was so difficult.
Throughout my hectic teenage years I have been faced with many extreme challenges that have required extreme focus and hard work to overcome. If it hadn’t been for hard work, none of these challenges that I faced would have been conquered.
Two years ago, when I was a freshman in high school, I dealt with an extremely significant injury. This took place in my tennis tournament in January. In the climax of my match, I jolted my back to the left and soon after felt a sharp, painful shock run through my spine.I knew at that difficult moment I seriously injured my back.I was rushed off the court and my parents made an appointment with an orthopedist(矫形外科医生) for the next morning.
I walked into the office extremely nervous and suffering from excruciating pain.My tennis season for school started in three months and I absolutely needed to build up the strength.
After about twenty minutes of waiting in the office, which felt like an eternity, the doctor walked in to examine my X-rays.With a sorrowful face, the doctor looked into mine and my mother’s eyes and said,“There is a 50/50 chance that Lucas will be able to participate in this year’s tennis season.Lucas broke his L5 vertebrae in his lower back.”My heart dropped and I felt a sadness come over me.The doctor said that I would be sitting out of physical activity for two and a half to three months.
Those three months were the longest three months of my life.I was so eager to get back to practices for the season.Every day, I would think about how it was going to be when I was fully healthy.I asked myself,“Am I going to be out of shape? Should I even play this year? I probably won’t have a successful season.”
From that dreadful day on, I decided that I was going to put in the work to be back in top form and have a successful season.
Paragraph 1:
After I got the “all clear” from my orthopedist I was going to get to work. ______________

One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
After I got the “all clear” from my orthopedist I was going to get to work. Practices were going to start in two weeks and I was determined to get back on the court. My hunger for success made me play and work out for two hours every day before the season. Through practices, I would hit the gym and try to build up the strength that I had before the injury.
Paragraph 2:
My hard work proved to be very effective. I had the most successful season of my career.I made it to the finals.Although I truly wanted to win, I knew that it was a great accomplishment for me to be in that position even not in the first place. The injury was almost a good thing because I proved to myself that I am capable of achieving goals that I strive for, through hard work of course. That season was by far the most rewarding season of my career. I felt so accomplished at the end of the season. Hard work always pays off.
