A
I love charity shops and so do lots of other people in Britain because you find quite a few of them in every high street. The charity shop is a British institution , selling everything from clothes to electric goods, all at very good prices. You can get things you won’t find in the shops any more. The thing I like best about them is that your money is going to a good cause and not into the pockets of profit?driven companies, and you are not damaging the planet, but finding a new home for unwanted goods.
The first charity shop was opened in 1947 by Oxfam. The famous charity’s appeal to aid postwar Greece had been so successful that it had been flooded with donations. They decided to set up a shop to sell some of these donations to raise money for that appeal. Now there are over 7,000 charity shops in the UK. My favourite charity shop in my hometown is the Red Cross shop, where I always find children’s books, all 10 or 20 pence each.
Most of the people working in the charity shops are volunteers, although there is often a manager who gets paid. Over 90% of the goods in the charity shops are donated by the public. Every morning you see bags of unwanted items outside the front of shops, although they don’t encourage this, rather ask people to bring things in when the shop is open.
The shops have very low running costs: all profits go to charity work. Charity shops raise more than £110 million a year, funding medical research, overseas aid, supporting sick and poor children, homeless and disabled people, and much more. What better place to spend your money? You get something special for a very good price and a good moral sense. You provide funds to a good cause and tread lightly on the environment.
1.The author loves the charity shop mainly because of _____________.
A.its convenient location B.its great variety of goods
C.its spirit of good will D.its nice shopping environment
2.The first charity shop in the UK was set up to _______________.
A.sell cheap products B.deal with unwanted things
C.raise money for patients D.help a foreign country
3.Which of the following is TRUE about charity shops? ____________
A.The operating costs are very low.
B.The staff are usually well paid.
C.90% of the donations are second hand.
D.They are open twenty?four hours a day.
4.Which of the following may be the best title for the passage?
A.What to Buy in a Charity Shop
B.Charity Shop:Its Origin & Development
C.Charity Shop:Where You Buy to Donate
D.The Public’s Concern about Charity Shops
B
I had a very special teacher in high school many years ago whose husband unexpectedly died of a heart attack. About a week after his death, she shared some of her views with a classroom of students.
As the sunlight came in through the classroom windows and the class was nearly over, she moved a few things aside on the edge of her desk and sat down there. She paused and said, “Before class is over, I would like to share with all of you a thought that is unrelated to class, but which I feel is important. Each of us comes to this world to learn, share, love, appreciate and give. None of us knows when this fantastic experience will end. It can be taken away at any moment.”
Her eyes beginning to water, she went on:
“So I would like you all to make me a promise. From now on, on your way to school, or on your way home, find something beautiful to notice. It doesn’t have to be something you see. It could be a scent of freshly baked bread from someone’s house, or it could be the sound of the wind slightly rustling the leaves in the trees.”
The class was completely quiet. We all picked up our books and left the room silently. That afternoon, I noticed more things on my way home from school.
Take notice of something special you see on your way home today. Go barefoot on the beach at sunset. For as we get older, it is not the things we did that we often regret, but the things we didn’t do.
5.What is the purpose of the author’s writing the passage?
A.To show his respect to his teacher.
B.To ask us to appreciate every moment of our life.
C.To ask us never to give in when facing difficulty.
D.To show the influence that a teacher has on her students.
6.Why did the teacher talk about something unrelated to class?
A.Because she had finished her class task.
B.Because she could hardly control her feeling.
C.Because she thought the class were not thoughtful enough.
D.Because she wanted to share some of her views with the class.
7.What does the underlined word “scent” mean?
A.Smell. B.Piece. C.Color. D.Taste.
8.What do we learn from the last sentence?
A.We will be happy when we are old.
B.We will regret the mistakes that we made when we were young.
C.We will regret what we didn’t do though we might do it.
D.We will do what we couldn’t do in the past.

One day on my way to school, I went to buy the pancake in a food store, leave my bag on the table while waiting. With the pancake ready, and I paid for it, took “my bag” on the table, and hurriedly headed for school. Seating in the classroom, I was about to take my books out while suddenly I became frozen. It was not my bag!I took the bag for mistake! What surprised me most was there was a large sum of money in it. Calming me down, I turned to the teacher for help. At that time, I come to understand the true meaning of being honestly.

解析:
分析句子结构可知With the pancake ready作状语,I paid for it...
be about to do...when...
在calm sb.down这一结构中,因为动词calm的动作对象为自身,故此处用反身代词myself,calm down也是固定搭配,故也可删去me。

Yi Jiefang's world broke down when her only son, Yang Ruizhe, 22, died in a road accident in Japan in 2000.To work through her sorrow, she decided to devote her life to fulfilling her son's last wish — planting trees in the desert. Yi established the non-profit organization NPO-Green Life in 2003, which has planted more than 1.1 million trees in deserts in northern China.
At the age of 65, Yi started a new project — to plant 667 hectares of pine forest in Duolun County in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. The county is where there are many of the sandstorms that affect Beijing, as it is only about 400 km from the capital.
Yi's_early_life_was_a_long_way_from_the_desert. She, a Shanghai native, had a stable job and a happy family. But the enterprising woman with big career ambitions moved to Japan by herself at age 38 to take a further course. Her husband and son joined her in the following years. The couple started a private Chinese medical clinic and the son, a diligent and excellent student, was admitted to the Chuo University in Tokyo.
Life was perfect, until the sudden death of her son. In the depths of her despair, Yi recalled that two weeks before his death, her son said he wanted to return to China to plant trees after graduating from university. “Ruizhe was concerned about the environment. He often rode his motorbike to the mountain and described to me what beautiful sceneries he had seen. His last words are deeply engraved (刻) in my mind. I sometimes even felt it might be God's will that I should go back to my country to plant trees,” she said.
Her son's wish gave Yi the strength to rebuild her life. After living in Japan for 18 years, Yi sold the clinic and returned to Shanghai with her husband. They devoted all their savings, Ruizhe's life insurance payout and donations from friends, to the NPO-Green Life project. After that, Yi chose the Tamin Chagan desert, in Inner Mongolia and started their planting project.

A
World hunger. These two little words contain one huge problem: people do not have enough to eat. According to the World Food Programme, hunger kills more people than any disease. World hunger is a widely recognized problem and many intelligent and generous people are working toward a solution.
Logically, it would seem that the best, fastest and easiest solution would be to give food to people who do not have it. While providing hungry people with food is great, unfortunately it is only a temporary fix to the global problem.
But maybe there is another answer. Statistics gathered within the past decade show that countries in which citizens spend a higher percentage of their yearly income on food tend to also have higher rates of malnutrition . For example, people in Pakistan spend nearly half of their annual income on food, yet over 40 percent of their children under the age of 5 are malnourished. In contrast, Americans spend around 7 percent on food and only 5 percent of children are malnourished.
Perhaps to create a self?supporting system, the focus and resources should shift from giving food to giving something that lasts a little longer. Maybe the answer is in commerce , not just charity. Heifer International is one example of a nonprofit organization that has shifted its focus from food. This organization gives poor families and communities breeding animals and teaches them to farm animals.
Heifer International teaches people valuable marketing skills and provides the resources to start small businesses. The families who are initially helped can then assist other families in their communities by sharing their resources and knowledge. These people earn better incomes and have more money to have the freedom to buy more food.

Not only does this help the individual, but it can help families, communities and generations.

A
World hunger.
Statistics gathered within the past decade show that countries in which citizens spend a higher percentage of their yearly income on food tend to also have higher rates of malnutrition For example, people in Pakistan spend nearly half of their annual income on food, yet over 40 percent of their children under the age of 5 are malnourished. In contrast, Americans spend around 7 percent on food and only 5 percent of children are malnourished.
Perhaps to create a self?supporting system, the focus and resources should shift from giving food to giving something that lasts a little longer. Maybe the answer is in commerce (商业), not just charity.
Not only does this help the individual, but it can help families, communities and generations.

1.as refer to…as… 故填as。
3.to put 动词seek之后用动词不定式作宾语,即seek to do sth.。故填to put。
故填What。
此处构成not just…but…,意为“不仅……而且……”。故填but。
故填are exchanged。

Kids suffer a large amount of pressure and stress during their school exams, which can often become too strong for them to deal with them. So it may be quite frightening. You may say that it’s all a part of growing up and therefore good lessons for them to learn, and to an extent I agree with you. However, it’s important to learn how to prepare for life’s challenges so that they aren’t scary and so that we are able to manage them the best we can.
Here are some tips you can use during your kids’ exam time.
Break their revision plan down into small parts. Doing this will help transform what once seemed like a huge impossible task into a more manageable one.
Help them arrange properly so that the subjects they like the least (perhaps ones that require more time and effort) are worked on first; once they are out of the way, it will help reduce the worry.
Plan week on week to make sure they are on track. Ticking items of a list each week will help them to feel good about themselves and their progress.
Create rewards for all the ticks — a favorite TV program, a delicious snack, an hour’s surfing the Internet, computer games or whatever it was that they enjoy the most. This will encourage them to carry on and make them feel good.
Think of strategies on how to deal with exams calmly so their anxieties don’t get the better of them.
Talk about times in their lives when they had been successful at something and look at the qualities they used to get them there — determination, persistence (坚持), hard work, patience, positivity, dedication (尽心尽力) — discuss how they can apply these skills to their exams.
Acknowledge that if they do their best that is good enough.
Make sure they realize that this period in their lives will pass and that exams are only a temporary time in their lives; nothing can and does last forever.
Make sure they keep their eye on the prize: enjoying their long summer holiday when the exams are finished; giving them something to look forward to will help to inspire them and provide a positive end in sight.

C. the easiest ones. D. the most difficult ones.
3. The underlined expression “get the better of” in Paragraph 7 is closest in meaning to __________.

5. Who are the intended readers of the passage?
A. Kids. B. Parents. C. Educators. D. People in general.

Home to me means a sense of familiarity and nostalgia (怀旧). It’s fun to come home. It looks the same. It smells the same. You’ll realize what has changed is you. Home is where we can remember pain, love and some other experiences: We parted here; My parents met here; I won three championships here.
If I close my eyes, I can still have a clear picture in mind of my first home. I walk in the door and see a brown sofa surrounding a low glass-top wooden table. To the right of the living room is my first bedroom. It’s empty, but it’s where my earliest memories are.
There is the dining room table where I celebrated birthdays and where I cried on Halloween — when I didn’t want to wear the skirt my mother made for me. I always liked standing on that table because it made me feel tall and strong. If I sit at this table, I can see my favorite room in the house, my parents’ room. It is simple: a brown wooden dresser lines the right side of the wall next to a television and a couple of photos of my grandparents on each side. Their bed is my safe zone. I can jump on it anytime — waking up my parents if I am scared or if I have an important announcement that cannot wait until the morning. I’m lucky because I know my first home still exists. It exists in my mind and heart, on a physical property (住宅) on West 64th street on the western edge of Los Angeles. It is proof I lived, I grew, and I learned.
Sometimes when I feel lost, I lie down and shut my eyes, and I go home. I know it’s where I’ll find my family, my dogs, and my belongings. I purposely leave the window open at night because I know I’ll be blamed by Mom. But I don’t mind, because I want to hear her say my name, which reminds me I’m home.
1. Why does the author call her parents’ bed her “safe zone” (Paragraph 3)?
A. It is her favorite place to play. B. Her needs can be satisfied there.
C. Her grandparents’ photos are lined on each side. D. Her parents always play together with her there.
2. What can be learned from the passage?
A. The old furniture is still in the author’s first bedroom.
B. The author can still visit her first physical home in Los Angeles.
C. The author’s favorite room in her first home is the dining room.
D. Many people of the author’s age can still find their first physical homes.
3. According to the author, which statement is NOT true?
A. Birthdays were often celebrated in the dinning room.
B. She cried on Halloween because she disliked the skirt.
C. Her parents’ room is her favorite room in her childhood.
D. She leaves the window open at night carelessly.
4. Sometimes when she feels lost, the author will ____________.
A. open the window at night B. lie down in bed to have a dream
C. try to bring back a sense of home D. go to Los Angeles to visit her mom
5. What is the author’s purpose of writing this passage?
A. To express how much she is attached to her home.
B. To declare how much she loves her first house.
C. To describe the state of her family.
D. To look back on her childhood.
