I never heard Erine talk much about his father.
One day I asked him, ‘ I’m really puzzled by something. I know your father was the only one to raise you. What on earth (究竟) did he do to make you become such a special person?’ Ernie sat quietly and smiled for a few 13 . Then he said, “When I was a child, he came into my room every night, gave me a kiss and said, ‘I love you, son.’ ”
Tears came into my 14 . He had not left any money 15 , but he had been a kind, loving father, and he left behind a legacy(遗产) of love.

I have been reading Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White. In this book, Fern lives on a farm. At the start of the book, a piglet (小猪) has recently been born. He is very small. Fern’s father is going to kill him. But Fern saves the piglet. She calls him Wilbur and feeds him. When he is big
enough, Wilbur goes to live in a barn (谷仓) that belongs to Fern’s uncle. In the barn, Wilbur makes a friend called Charlotte. She is a spider (蜘蛛). Wilbur finds out that Fern’s uncle is going to kill him for meat. Wilbur asks Charlotte for help. Charlotte helps by writing words in
her web so that people will think Wilbur is a special pig.
My favourite part of the book is when Wilbur has gone to the fair. The family have been at the fair too. They have helped Wilbur to get ready for a competition, but now they have gone home. Wilbur is nervous and Charlotte is working on a new web. This is an exciting part of
the book. The best character is Templeton, the rat. He is funny. I also like the geese. I think the writer makes them seem real.
I really enjoyed reading this book. It is a nice story but the ending is a bit sad.

Chris Hughes is a 24-year-old young man from the UK. He often wears the same clothes for a lot of days because he doesn't know how to use a washing machine.
This is not a joke. Hughes is not the only young person who doesn't have basic life skills. According to a recent study by YouGov, a UK market research company, today's young people in the UK are less capable(能力强的) than older generations(老一辈) when it comes to basic life skills. For example, about 35 percent don't know how to sew a button(缝扣子) on, and 11 percent don't understand how to change a light bulb or iron clothes.
Young people in the United States have this problem as well. According to Forbes, many young people in the USA are losing the skill of cooking, as they prefer to order take-out food.
The development of technology may be the main reason for this problem. Born and raised in modern society, young people are always using smartphones and computers. With GPS(全球定位系统) at hand, they don't have to learn to read maps at all.
However, this does not mean younger generations are unable to carry out basic everyday tasks. The Mirror says as their lives have changed, the life skills that are necessary have changed too. For example, the study results show that although only 45 percent know how to pay their water and electricity bills, 72 percent could help set up a Wi-fi network in a new house.
1. Hughes wears the same clothes for many days because he________.
A. has developed it as a habit B. wants to play jokes on others

B. Many American youngsters(年轻人) are losing basic life skills.
C. 11 percent of British youngsters can't iron clothes.
D. Older generations in the UK are more capable than today's young peoeple.
3. What may cause the problems in the passage?
A. Parents' love for their children.

A. needn't learn basic life skills

Honesty of American students
When I first arrived in America, I was surprised by the honesty of my classmates. Over my first month at school, I didn’t see or hear anyone cheating. I found two reasons for this.
First, if any student cheats, he or she will get punished. My school has a rule called the Honor Code. It asks students not to steal, lie or cheat. If someone goes against the code, he or she will have to leave the school. During my first year in the school, seven students left the school because of cheating.
Second, American students don’t care about scores as much as Chinese students do. They know that colleges will look at their all-round abilities instead of only scores. So they have fewer reasons to cheat.
