Dalmatian Coast, Croatia
It’s no secret that summers on the Dalmatian Coast in Croatia offer clear blue waters for swimming, beautiful sunsets, historic buildings and picture-perfect beaches. The best way to see the Dalmatian Coast is from your own sea kayak(皮划艇). But the temperature is far too high to be comfortable in the high season(旺季), so you need to wait until it drops but the sea is still warm.
Mykonos, Greece
Mykonos is usually very crowded(拥挤的) with visitors in July and August, but the Greek meltemi winds can be a real problem in high summer. Later in the season, they are much calmer and you can spend your time lying on the beach without being angry with the sand. The best address is the Hotel Belvedere, but the cheapest hotel is the Grace Mykonos, which is of good value in September, but even better a month later.
Aeolian Islands, Italy
Sicily’s beautiful seven islands often attract(吸引) Oscar-winners like Robert De Niro and Russell Crowe. September is the time to visit the Aeolian Islands, as the tourists have gone. Don’t miss Panarea, where the only way of getting around is on foot, and make sure you include the greenest island, Salina.
St Tropez, France
St Tropez in high season is full, but at the end of August, it soon returns to being the French Provencal fishing town of the 1960s. You can walk through its streets in peace and drop into its popular stores without the crowds. It’s also much easier to get a meal at places such as Alain Ducasse’s Spoon, or to drop into bars like Nikki Beach for a drink. The best places to stay are Hotel La Ponche or Le Beauvallon, a 10-minute boat ride across the bay(海湾) in St Maxime.

A passenger has been fined (罚款) almost $ 550 after he was caught without a train ticket—that would have cost just $ 2.80.
Nicky Haywood, from Nottingham, was found guilty (有罪的) of travelling on an East Midlands train from Nottingham to Newstead without a ticket.
The 27-year-old, who did not appear for his hearing at Nottingham Magistrates Court (地方法庭), is now being made to pay the price—which is almost 200 times the original(最初的) price—for the 20 minute journey.
According to the Nottingham Post, Magistrates have ordered Haywood to pay a $220 fine, $302 in costs, a $22 government surcharge (追加费用) and the $2.80 fare.
Senior conductor, Yvonne Clay was working on the day of the incident, according to the Nottingham Post.
The newspaper reported that she said Haywood had got on the train without a ticket, though he had the chance to buy one from both vending machines and booking offices on the platform.
She said:“He offered a Solo Electron card but we could not take that on the train.I informed him with a notice to pay.He gave his name and address and had 21 days to pay the fare.”

It is often said that Western Europeans speak English. From traveling all through Europe, I know that this is not entirely true. Some regions of Europe have a 90% of English speaking rate, while in other parts, English is generally a tongue which is impossible to understand. The divide, it seems, lies with the Romance languages.
In Scandinavia, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, and the rest of the Western European non-Romance language speaking regions, English seems to be understood and spoken just like the people’s first tongue. In Iceland, I have never experienced English was spoken so well and so widely by a non-native speaking country. And I have almost never met a Dutch person who did not speak English almost as well as my countrymen.
But when you move to south of Western Europe a little, something happens.English becomes a less useful language for travel. You just cross over the Romance language barrier and into Spain, Portugal, France, and Italy, where English is spoken at a rate that does not seem to be much higher than in China, Latin America, or Southeast Asia.
Traveling through Europe and working at hotel around the world that are popular with Europeans, have given me a deeper view of their usage of foreign languages. The northern Europeans can often speak five or six languages, while the Romance speakers hardly know more than their birth tongue. And if you think that Spanish and Italian are so similar that they can be understood by each other, I tell you that this is completely wrong.Spaniards and Italians don’t even understand each other. It is also not a fact that people from both of these countries can communicate in French; only those who put a high amount of effort into learning English or have lived abroad for years can speak English well.
People often say that French people really understand English but refuse to speak it, but from watching hundreds of French travelers over the years struggle with English abroad as well as friends in France trying in vain (徒劳的) to communicate with me, I know that this is not true.English is simply not widely spoken there outside the large cities.
9.According to the passage, which statement do you think is TRUE?
A.In Iceland, English is not spoken very well.
B.Dutch person can almost speak English as well as the author himself.
C.Spanish and Italian are so similar that they can be understood easily by each other.
D.English is as widely spoken as French in France.
根据第二段中的“And I have almost never met a Dutch person who did not speak English almost as well as my countrymen.”
10.The author is probably a(n)________.
A.Frenchman B.Dutchman

Various animals are respected and even worshipped(崇拜)in different cultures. In Hinduism, for example, cows are valued for their gentle nature. However, in ancient Egypt, crocodiles(鳄鱼) were regarded as living representations of the god Sobek.
During the serious drought in the 15th century, the Mossi were led to an undiscovered pond by the crocodiles. This not only allowed the Mossi to survive, but also led to the founding of the village Bazoulé.
As the villagers owe their survival to the crocodiles, they now care for and live side by side with them. The villagers even bury the crocodiles and hold funerals for them after their death. The crocodiles are not only regarded as protectors of Bazoulé, but also fortune-tellers that give best wishes to the villagers. It seems that the worship of the crocodiles has paid off. For over 70 years, there has never been a death from a crocodile attack in Bazoulé.It’s normal for women to wash their clothes in the water and gather plants nearby. And it is also normal to see children playing around the water where the crocodiles live.
Naturally, this strange relationship between the villagers and crocodiles has attracted a lot of attention. Tourists from all over the world come to the village, hoping to catch sight of this unlikely bond between humans and crocodiles.Visitors have the opportunity to buy a chicken, with which they can attract the crocodiles out of the water. You can pose for pictures, and if you’re brave enough, you can sit on a crocodile’s back just like the local children usually do.
The village is trying to develop its tourism, but unfortunately, it was found to be threatened by global warming.Lower annual rainfall means that the pond will vanish one day. Perhaps the legends are true, and when this happens, the crocodiles will lead the Mossi to a new water source.
1.Why were the Mossi so grateful to the crocodiles?
A.They never did harm to the Mossi.
B.They once happened to help the Mossi.
C.They led the Mossi back to their homes.
D.They provided clean drinking water for the Mossi.
2.What does the author intend to show in Paragraph 3?
A.The crocodile attacks cannot cause any death.
B.The villagers get along well with the crocodiles.
C.The crocodiles can bring good luck to the villagers.
D.The crocodiles can protect the villagers from danger.
3.What does the underlined word “vanish” in the last paragraph mean?
A.Move. B.Freeze.
C.Narrow. D.Disappear.
4.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.More and more tourists will visit the village.
B.The crocodiles will probably move to a new place.
C.Villagers will take measures to protect the crocodiles.
D.The crocodiles in the village are becoming less and less.

Starbucks says it uses one billion plastic straws(吸管) every year, but it plans to stop the use of plastic straws in each of its 28,000 stores across the globe. Starbucks’ announcement comes just a week after Seattle, the city where the first Starbucks opened, forbade plastic straws.
In order to replace the straws, Starbucks has developed a new lid(盖子) for some of its drinks like iced coffee and tea. Actually, the lid has a raised lip. Some people have compared the new lids to “adult sippy cups”, CNN Business reported.
Starbucks is always saying it is a company that cares much about the environment. In recent years, awareness about the effect that plastic is having on the environment—in particular, the ocean—has caused scientists to sound the alarm about a need to curb the use of plastics.
“What we realize is that these billions of little things in the ocean, such as one man’s toothbrush, one lady’s comb, all can cause the problem,” Emily Penn said. She is the co-founder of an expedition(探险队).“But what makes us happy is that we can solve it well through our daily actions. We need billions of small actions—just little daily things to reduce the pollution.”

The Pharos, the great lighthouse of Alexandria, was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. It stood on the island of Pharos, in the harbor(港口) of the city of Alexandria. In 280 B.C.,Ptolemy Ⅰ Soter, the ruler of Egypt, ordered the building of the lighthouse. Twenty years later, it was finished—the first lighthouse in the world and the tallest building on Earth, besides the Great Pyramid of Egypt.
The Pharos was designed by Sostrates, a Greek architect(建筑师). Sostrates wanted to leave his name on the base of the lighthouse. But Ptolemy refused, ordering that only his own name appeared on the building. But Sostrates found a way to do that. At the base of the Pharos, Sostrates left a message containing his own name. Then he covered it with plaster(建筑石膏) and left Ptolemy’s name over it. After many years, the plaster disappeared and people knew the true architect of the lighthouse.
In 1302 and 1323, two strong earthquakes hit Alexandria, damaging the lighthouse. In 1326, it finally fell into the sea. Much of what we know about the lighthouse comes from the writings of Arabs who once visited the Pharos.
The Pharos was about 384 feet tall, the same height as a modern 40-story building. At the top of the lighthouse stood a large statue of Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea. Under it was a beacon, the source of light for the lighthouse. The Pharos used two kinds of beacons. At night, a large fire created the light. During the day, a huge mirror made use of the sunlight to create the light.
It was said that the mirror was also used to set enemy ships on fire as they entered the harbor by directing the sun’s rays (sunlight) at them. While the idea is interesting, it is also clearly impossible.

Smartphones, tablets and smart watches are banned(禁止) at school for all children under 15 in France. Under the ban students are not able to use their phones at all during school hours, including meal breaks.
“I think it’s a good thing. School is not about being on your phone,” Paris mum Marie-Caroline Madeleine told AFP. “It’s hard with kids. You can’t control what they see and that’s one of the things that worries me as a parent.”
There is no law like this in Australia, but some Australian schools have banned phones.
McKinnon Secondary School in Victoria introduced a total ban in February and Principal Pitsa Binnion said this has been a success.
McKinnon students still have a Chromebook to use in every class for day-to-day learning but they’re not allowed to use social media(媒体).Ms Binnion said at first “teachers cheered and students moaned(抱怨),” but now they’re seeing the positives(优势).“They come to school and they’re not allowed to use phones at all during the school day, including lunch breaks,” she said.
“It’s been wonderful in terms of students communicating with each other at lunchtime and not looking at their screen,” she said.
Ms Binnion also leads by example and doesn’t use her mobile phone in school. “I think anyone can do it if we’ve done it.”
Not everyone agrees with the bans. Western Sydney University technology researcher Dr.Joanne Orlando wrote in online magazine The Conversation earlier this year that Australia should not ban phones in schools because it’s important to educate kids to live in the age they are raised in.
“A good education for students today is knowing how to use technology to learn, communicate and work with ideas,” she wrote. “Banning students from using smartphones is a 1950s response to a 2018 state-of-play.”
1.Why did Madeleine welcome the ban?
A.School is for studying.
B.Kids behave badly nowadays.
C.Teachers find it hard to control kids.

School is not about being on your phone可知,Madeleine认为学校不是玩手机的地方,言外之意就是学校是学习的地方。
2.What can we learn about the ban in McKinnon Secondary School?
A.Some teachers were against it at first.
B.Students can now see the good of the ban.
C.Students can use their phones at lunch breaks.
D.Teachers have stopped using phones at school as well.
由第四段中的this has been a success和第五段中的now they’re seeing the positives可知,学生们起初抱怨,但现在都看到了这一禁令的好处。
3.What does the underlined word “Chromebook” in Paragraph 5 probably refer to?
A.A book. B.A notebook.
C.A learning website. D.A kind of computer.
由第一段中的Smartphones, tablets and smart watches和第五段中的for day-to-day learning but they’re not allowed to use social media(媒体)可知,画线词应该指的是一种电脑。
4.What does Dr.Joanne Orlando think of banning phones in schools?
A.It will disconnect parents and kids.
B.It will cause kids to communicate less.

It seems that great artists and scientists often suffer from mental problems. Both Einstein and Dickens had mental illness. Now scientists have started to look at whether mental illness and genius are linked(联系).
Dr.Adele Juda studied 5,000 creative people in Germany. She found there were more people with mental illness in this group than in the general population.Poets had the highest rate(比例) of mental illness, followed by musicians, with lower numbers for painters and architects.
Other scientists did research which also showed a strong link between mental problems and creativity. But, it did nothing to explain it.
Dr.Ruth Richards of Harvard University made a breakthrough. Instead of studying creative people, she took a group of psychiatric(精神病的) patients and tested them for creativity. The patients got much higher scores than a normal group.
Also, the patients’ close relatives were much more creative than the patients and a normal group. This suggests that the key to the link between creativity and mental illness is in our genes(基因).
But this is a problem.According to Darwinism, harmful genes should be removed. Some scientists believe that evolution(进化) has created a balance, where the madness of a few people leads to the development of the whole human race.
Geniuses may be mad, bad or just difficult to understand, but their discoveries have improved the world we live in.It seems that a little creative madness is good for us all.

6.The underlined phrase“made a breakthrough”in the fourth paragraph means “________”.
A.discovered or found something new and important
B.made a way through using force
C.(of the sun or the moon) appeared from behind (clouds)
D.suddenly changed(from a slower to a faster pace)
7.Which of the following statements is NOT true?
A.Among the 5, 000 creative people in Germany, more people suffer from mental diseases than the general population.
B.There is a strong link between mental problems and creativity.
C.Psychiatric patients make greater contributions than common people.

Ninety-five percent of American families are now online, with adults spending averagely five hours a day at home on the computer, which greatly influences their life, according to a new study. Yes, we’re connecting more with friends, but we’re also having dinner quickly so we can update our Facebook status. Does your life suffer from too much time spent online, and do you properly protect your family’s identity when you share their information online? Here’s how to take control of them.
According to Sherry Turkle, professor of psychology at MIT, many people use their computers to avoid the messiness of real life. It’s difficult to refuse a friend, but it’s easy to send out an e-mail to do that. When you find yourself hiding behind your screen, make an effort to reconnect with people face to face. “It’s not because the technology is bad,” says Turkle. “It’s a matter of figuring out its place.”
Proud parents can’t help posting photos of their kids. But publicly sharing your kids’information, such as your child’s full name, birth date, and place of residence could put him in danger. To avoid the risk, invite the people you know well to view the photos on password-protected(加密的) websites such as Flickr and Snapfish. If you use Facebook, create a group of your inner circle specially for sharing photos and news of your kids.
Need a handy way to measure your family’s online habits? Check out the family plan on rescuetime.com. It tracks how each member of your family spends time online, and it shows the data by hour, day, and week. The website, which also offers personal plans, even allows you to block distracting(分心的) websites from your loved ones and yourself.
If reaching for your phone to check for messages and e-mails has become an uncontrollable habit, try this trick. Keep your devices on but turn off every message reminding, vibration(振动), and so on. Check for updates only when you finish a task.

Next, walk around the Vietnam Veterans Memorial—a long wall with the names of every soldier killed in Vietnam. Or walk along Pennsylvania Avenue and go on a guided tour of the U.S. Capitol Building, the U.S. Supreme Court and the White House, which has been the U.S. president’s official home since 1800.As for the White House, tours are only made Tuesday through Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Later, spend an afternoon at the Smithsonian Institution, which is made up of nine museums along the Mall. Start off at the Smithsonian Institution Building where you can pick up a map and information on all of the museums. Have fun walking around the National Museum of American History, where you can see many different things such as George Washington’s wooden teeth, Judy Garland’s shoes from the film The Wizard Of Oz and Muhammad Ali’s boxing gloves.
In the evening, you can eat out at one of the restaurants and bars around Columbia Road and 18th Street. Then, head down to the Adams Morgan neighborhood, which is just two miles from the White House and full of great bars. It is the heart of the Latino community(拉美人社区),and there are a large number of colorful murals(壁画).

A
In 2013, Harris Academy, a school in south London, stopped its students from using slang(俚语) words, such as ain’t. The move led to an argument over whether it is necessary to control the way students speak.
The creation of slang is one way languages change. Slang, or informal language, usually changes more rapidly than standard language. For example, the word “groovy”, meaning “great”, used to be very popular in the 1960s and 1970s. But by 1980, people had stopped using it.
One important reason we use slang is to show others that we belong to a group. Another is to communicate an idea in a more colorful or humorous way. For example, the phrase jump ship creates a stronger image(形象) than the more standard leave an organization. While in the Internet age, slang expressions are created faster than ever. Often, Internet slang words are created to make messages faster and easier to type.
Some people are strongly against the use of slang. Teachers at Harris Academy were worried that slang would prevent their students from learning how to read, write, and express themselves correctly. They thought this might cause problems for them when they finally went on to apply(申请) to universities or companies.
However, some people think differently. Linguist Tony Thorne sees slang as a way for speakers of a language to show their creativity and humor. And, unlike what some believe, slang is not a new phenomenon(现象). As Thorne explains, “Slang has not become more popular, simply more public.” In today’s highly connected world, slang has become more noticeable because of better tools to observe(观察) language change.
Perhaps the worries mentioned above can be solved by making people understand when to use certain forms of language. As long as people use slang properly, there is no need to completely avoid it.

Many people catch a cold in the spring or fall. It makes us wonder...why can’t scientists find a cure(疗法) for the common cold if they can send a man to the moon? The answer is easy. There are hundreds of kinds of cold viruses(病毒) out there. You never know which one you will get, so there isn’t a cure for each one.
When a virus attacks your body, your body works hard to get rid of it. Blood rushes to your nose and brings congestion(堵塞) with it. You feel terrible because you can’t breathe well, but your body is actually “eating” the virus. Your temperature rises and you get a fever, but the heat of your body is killing the virus. You also have a runny nose to stop the virus from getting to your cells. You may feel miserable,__but actually your wonderful body is doing everything it can to kill the cold.
Different people have different ways of dealing with colds. In the United States and some other countries, for example, people might eat chicken soup to feel better. Some people drink warm water. Other people take medicine.
There is one interesting thing to note—some scientists say taking medicine when you have a cold is actually bad for you. The virus stays in you longer because your body doesn’t have a way to fight with it and kill it. Bodies can do an amazing job on their own. There is a joke, however, on taking medicine when you have a cold. It goes like this:
It takes about 1 week to get over a cold if you don’t take medicine, but only 7 days to get over a cold if you take medicine.

Driving a car is not just handling controls and judging speed and distance. It requires you to predict what other road users will do and get ready to react to something unexpected. When alcohol is consumed, it enters your bloodstream and acts as a depressant(抑制药), damaging eyesight, judgment and co-ordination(协调), slowing down reaction time and greatly increasing the risk of accidents.Even below the drink driving limit, driving will be affected.
Alcohol may take a few minutes to be absorbed(吸收)into the bloodstream and start action on the brain.Absorption rate is increased when drinking on an empty stomach or when consuming drinks mixed with fruit juice. To get rid of alcohol from the body is a very slow process and it is not possible to speed it up with any measures like taking a shower or having a cup of tea or coffee.
The present Road Traffic Ordinance states clearly that the limit of alcohol concentration is:
●50 milligrams of alcohol per 100ml of blood;
●22 micrograms of alcohol per 100ml of breath;
●67 milligrams of alcohol per 100ml of urine(尿液).
Drivers who cause traffic accidents, or who commit a moving traffic offence or are being suspected of drink driving will be tested.
Any driver found drinking beyond the limit will be charged(收费).The driver declared guilty may be fined a maximum of HK $25,000 and be sentenced to up to 3 years in prison and punished for 10 driving-offence points; or temporarily banned from driving.
The same punishment applies to failing to provide specimens(样本) for breath, blood or urine tests without good excuse.
