Unit 3 Australia
我们都非常熟悉澳大利亚,但是我们不一定了解是何人、何时发现澳大利亚的。那么我们就通过下面的短文来了解更多的有关信息吧。
Discovering Australia
On May 13,1787,a fleet of English ships set sail for Australia with about 750 people. These men and women were not ordinary passengers. They were convicts being sent to Australia as punishment for their crimes.
Laws in England during that period were very harsh(苛刻的),and people were punished severely for even the smallest crimes.A man could be sentenced to death for hunting on another man’s property or he could be put to death for chopping down someone else’s tree. For many other crimes, the punishment was “transportation”.The guilty person was shipped to a distant land where he was forced to work without pay.Often women and children were shipped to other land, too.
In 1770,Captain Cook had discovered the continent of Australia and claimed it for England. At first,England found no use for this vast land on the other side of the world, but then the American Revolution took place.England could no longer ship their convicts(囚犯) to the American colonies. So she turned to Australia as a good place for her prisoners.
A former naval captain was picked to accompany the convicts to the new colony. His job was to help them build a settlement which he would govern. The captain was glad to go.He believed the convicts could learn to live in peace. He felt they would obey the laws in a new country.
In January 1788,the English fleet and its strange cargo(船货) landed in Australia. After days of searching, the captain found a fine harbor. The land nearby had trees and streams. The convict colony made a new beginning here.Australia’s history had begun.

World Heritage Sites such as Australia’s Great Barrier Reef and Katmandu in Nepal could be taken off the tourism map by 2020 due to the effects of climate change and too many visitors,a think tank(政治、社会、经济问题的智囊团,智库) said on Friday.
In a report prepared for the UK insurance company Churchill, the Centre for Future Studies(CFS) listed 10 popular destinations that could be either permanently closed or have a visitor cap within 15 years.
“I’m reasonably confident we’re going to see an increasing climate degradation that is going to influence various places in the world with increasing severity(严重),”said CFS Director Frank Shaw.
“Floods, storms, droughts, increasing and irregular temperatures will combine to bring about changes in destination choice for tourists.”
Florida’s Everglades in the United States,Athens in Greece,Croatia’s Dalmatian coastline,Tuscany and the Amalfi Coast in Italy as well as the Maldives are some of the other destinations at risk highlighted by the report.
The study drew on evidence provided by scientists, governments,as well as tourism and environmental organizations from around the world.
Tourism activity on the Great Barrier Reef, situated off Queensland state in Australia’s northeast, injects an estimated $3.8 billion into the local economy each year.
“There is a conflict between environmental concerns and commercial interests,”added Shaw.“For some countries tourism represents a significant part of their gross domestic (国内的) product.”
But there is evidence Australia and many other governments are considering what can be done to protect national assets(资产).
1.The reasons why some World Heritage Sites could be taken off the tourist map included all of the following EXCEPT________.
A.there are too many tourists visiting the sites
B.the governments are not considering the sites
C.floods, storms and droughts frequently happen there
D.there is often a sudden change in temperature there

2.The underlined word “injects”(in Paragraph 7) is closest in meaning to “________”.
A.invest B.cost
C.introduce D.divide
A 解析:词义猜测题。大堡礁的旅游估计每年要为当地经济注入38亿美元。inject注射;注入;invest投资。
3.Which of the following do not provide evidence about the climate degradation?
A.Scientists and officials.
B.Tourism organizations.
C.Environmental organizations.
D.Insurance companies.
D 解析:细节理解题。从文中第六段“The study drew on evidence provided by scientists, governments,as well as tourism and environmental organizations from around the world.”中看出没有提及D项。
4.According to the passage,we can infer that________.
A.some heritage sites will no longer be able to be seen in the future
B.the listed destinations are all off the ocean coast
C.the Great Barrier Reef will not be closed by 2020
D.environmental concerns and commercial interest has caused problems
A 解析:推理判断题。B项过于绝对,如Katmandu in Nepal就不临海岸;C项所述和原文相反;D项断章取义。

Illegally traded endangered species that escape, forming secondary populations, offer hope to their long?term survival, a study suggests. “This first came to my attention when I read a news story about the seizure of an illegal shipment of 23 yellow?crested cockatoos,” said Luke Gibson, a college teacher. He learned that the species was critically endangered, which surprised him.
This encouraged Dr. Gibson and his colleague to investigate(调查) how a critically endangered species had become self?sustaining outside of its natural range. They discovered 49 cases of a globally threatened species becoming established as a separate population, including the yellow?crested cockatoo in their city.
“This is a species which is primarily threatened by wildlife trade,” he told BBC News. “Poachers(偷猎者) go out into the forest in its native range in eastern Indonesia and capture the birds and then ship them off, usually up to our city where there is a strong demand for pet birds. This is what has fueled the decline of this species in its native range. But it’s really interesting because that same cause also had another effect:some of the people who were keeping this species here accidentally or intentionally released them.” As a result of enough of the birds being set free, it allowed a new self?sustaining population to be established in this city.
The government of Dr. Gibson’s city has made it illegal to capture the species, even though it is a non?native species. Because the city is affluent and relatively well educated, the cases of people breaking the law are extremely rare, explained Dr. Gibson. Unlike in its native range in Indonesia where capturing birds forms a major source of income.
However, there can be downsides(缺点) to the newly established population of endangered species, such as a limited genetic pool, and suffering from novel diseases. It did also present a possible “very interesting” opportunity for conservationists, Dr. Gibson suggested. This would involve “harvesting” some of the newly established secondary population, which may provide a way to help slow global biodiversity loss.

The Intelligent Transport team at Newcastle University have turned an electric car into a mobile laboratory named “DriveLAB” in order to understand the challenges faced by older drivers and to discover where the key stress points are.
Research shows that giving up driving is one of the key reasons for a fall in health and well?being among older people, leading to them becoming more isolated(隔绝) and inactive.
Led by Professor Phil Blythe, the Newcastle team are developing in?vehicle technologies for older drivers which they hope could help them to continue driving into later life.
These include custom?made navigation(导航) tools, night vision systems and intelligent speed adaptations. Phil Blythe explains: “For many older people, particularly those living alone or in the country, driving is important for preserving their independence, giving them the freedom to get out and about without having to rely on others.”
“But we all have to accept that as we get older our reactions slow down and this often results in people avoiding any potentially challenging driving conditions and losing confidence in their driving skills. The result is that people stop driving before they really need to.”
Dr Amy Guo, the leading researcher on the older driver study, explains: “The DriveLAB is helping us to understand what the key stress points and difficulties are for older drivers and how we might use technology to address these problems.”
“For example, most of us would expect older drivers always go slower than everyone else but surprisingly, we found that in 30mph zones they struggled to keep at a constant speed and so were more likely to break the speed limit and be at risk of getting fined. We’re looking at the benefits of systems which control their speed as a way of preventing that.”
“We hope that our work will help with technological solutions(解决方案) to ensure that older drivers stay safer behind the wheel.”

Dear Mike,
I’m very glad to know you are interested in our class library we have organized recently. Now I’d like to tell you something about it.
In order to arouse our interest in reading good books and broaden our horizons, our headmaster called on us to build a class library. We were all very happy with the idea and supported it strongly.Firstly we determined a particular space in the class and bought several bookshelves. Each student offered at least one book which was worth reading. And then we classified the books according to the subject and put them on the shelves in order. After that,we held a meeting to make some rules of borrowing and returning books and choose some students to manage them.By making the most of the class library,I have benefited a lot.
Best wishes.

There is growing evidence that watching hours and hours of TV can promote kids to eat unhealthy foods and gain more weight. But for many parents, the television is still a convenient solution of entertainment.Hoping to show light on how to best help parents cut back on such TV time, scientists identified certain characteristics among babies and mothers that tend to promote more hours in front of the screen.
In the study, the researchers analyzed data from 217 mother and baby pairs. At 3,6,9,12,and 18 months after birth, the babies’ mothers reported on how long the TV was on during the day and how often they fed their babies while watching TV.
Overall, mothers spent a significant amount of time watching television, and it was reported that they spent quite a bit of time feeding their babies in front of the TV as well.Babies just 3 months old were exposed to an average of nearly three hours of TV or videos daily, and nearly 40% of the youngsters were exposed to three hours of TV every day by the time they were a year old.
The scientists were also able to find some factors that contribute to fewer hours in front of the screen, however.Moms with a high school diploma or any additional education were less likely to have TVs in their babies’ room, and less likely to keep the television on during meals.
Eating in front of the television can lead to unhealthy dining habits that affect childhood and adulthood since mothers feeding babies while watching TV might not focus, which can lead to overfeeding.
So while it’s not surprising that meals and television aren’t a healthy combination, understanding the range of factors that contribute to greater TV exposure may help parents to build more effective ways to limit too much screen time.
