In Vietnam, Tet?Trung?Thu (tet?trung?thoo), or the Mid?Autumn Festival, is one of the most popular family holidays. It is held on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month.
Vietnamese families plan their activities around their children on this special day.In a Vietnamese folk story, parents were working so hard to prepare for the harvest that they left the children playing by themselves. To make up for the lost time, parents would use the Mid?Autumn Festival as a chance to show their love and thanks for their children.

At the grocer's (食品杂货店) I noticed a small boy hungrily eyeing up a basket of freshly picked green peas. I couldn't help overhearing the conversation between the storekeeper Miller and the boy.
“Hello, Mr. Miller. Just admiring the peas. They sure look good.”
“Would you like to take some home?” asked Miller.
“No, Sir. Got nothing to pay for them with.”
“Well, what have you to trade me for some of those peas?”
“All I got is my prize marble (弹珠) here.”
“Is that right? Let me see it,” said Miller.
“Here it is. She's a dandy (上等品).”
“I can see that. Only thing is this one is blue and I sort of go for red.Do you have a red one like this at home?” the storekeeper asked.
“Not exactly (精确地) but almost.”
“Tell you what. Take this bag of peas home with you and next trip this way let me look at that red marble.” Miller told the boy.
“Sure will. Thanks Mr. Miller.”
Years later, when Miller died, I went to his funeral. Ahead of me in line waiting like me to pay their respects were three young men. They approached Miller's wife, standing composed (镇定的) and smiling by her husband's casket (棺材). Each young man hugged her, kissed her on the cheek, spoke briefly (简短地) with her and moved on to the casket.
Our turn came to meet Mrs. Miller. I told her who I was and reminded her of the incident of the boy,the peas and the marbles. With her eyes glistening (闪耀), she took my hand and led me to the casket.
“Those three young men who just left were all ‘boys with marbles’.They just told me how they appreciated the things Jim ‘traded’ them. Now, at last, when Jim could not change his mind about color or size... they came to pay their debt (人情债).”
“We've never had a great deal of the wealth of this world,” she said, “but this would mean more to my husband than any amount of money.”
With loving gentleness she lifted her husband's fingers. Resting underneath were three shining red marbles.
1.What can be concluded from the conversation between Mr. Miller and the boy?
A.Mr. Miller liked red marbles even better than his business.
B. Mr. Miller fully considered the boy's family situation.
C. The boy was very skilled in bargaining.
D. The boy was good at choosing vegetables.
2.From the incident, we can conclude that Mr. Miller was________.
A. considerate (体贴的) B. mean (小气的)
C. childlike D. humorous
3.Why did Mr. Miller always change his mind about the three young men's marbles?
A.He wanted them to provide him with the best marbles.
B. He hoped to teach them how to do business.
C. He could sell more goods if they visited frequently.
D. He was trying to help them without hurting their self?esteem (自尊心).
4.At the end of the story, “the three red marbles” in Mr Miller's hand were a symbol of________.
A. trust B. determination
C. gratefulness D. responsibility

When school starts, the little shopping center across the street called Town and Country Village gets lots of business.
At 11∶40 am when the bell rings for lunch, there is no better place for students to go than the little food stores at Town and Country Village. Freshmen (高一新生) love the new experience of going off campus for lunch. For upperclassmen, it's a lifestyle Every day, even when there's not much time, the trip across the street is completely necessary (必需的).
I don't bring a bag lunch to school. There are so many things to buy across the street, like fruit, sandwiches and teriyaki(红烧的) bowls. I think bag lunches are difficult to carry with all my textbooks and binders (整理夹). Bag lunches are often dull and tasteless—my mother packs me chive (细香葱) dumplings every day for lunch. After eight years of bringing bag lunches, I am tired of the food that I used to love so much, like dumplings and pork chops. At the Town and Country Village, I never get bored of any food. The lines move quickly and lunches there are not very expensive.
These small restaurants give me a feeling of freedom. I appreciate(感激) this even more when I go to China. There, teenagers are surprised when I tell them that at my American school, my friends and I can leave and drive downtown (市区) to get lunch. I tell them it's not as good as Chinese food, but the chance to go to different places makes high school so much more fun.
1.What is the main idea of this passage?
A.To make Town and Country Village famous.
B.To compare American food with Chinese food.
C.To explain what American teenagers do for lunch.
D.To tell us why American students don't like to bring bag lunches.

2.Which statement is TRUE about “upperclassmen”?
A.Most of them are used to having lunch at Town and Country Village.
B.They often have lunch in the restaurants in their school.
C.They have more time for lunch than freshmen.
D.They would rather have bag lunches at school.
3.We can infer from the passage that ________.
A.American food is as tasty as Chinese food
B.American teenagers refuse to eat in their schools
C.the writer's mother made sure her bag lunches had new and interesting foods
D.food is not the only reason why the writer loves those small restaurants

The wheel is regarded as one of the oldest and most important inventions. It came from Ancient Mesopotamia in the 5th millennium BC, first in the function of potter's wheels A similar independent invention in China dated back to around 2800 BC. It is also thought that the invention of the wheel dated back to Ancient India. Though they did not develop the wheel properly, the Olmec and certain other western hemisphere cultures seem to have come near the idea, as wheel?like worked stones have been found on objects regarded as children's toys dating from about 1500 BC. The wheel was clearly unknown in sub?Saharan Africa, Australia, and the America until relatively recent contacts with European?Asians.

The invention of the wheel falls in the late Neolithic Period and may be seen together with the other technological advances that caused the early Bronze Age (铜器时代).Early wheels were simple wooden disks with a hole for the axle. In the early Roman Empire, most horse?carts used a design featuring two chords (弦) across the wheel. The spoked (辐条) wheel was invented much more recently, and allowed the construction of lighter and swifter vehicles. The earliest known examples are in the context of the Andronovo culture, dating from 2000 BC. The spoked wheel was in continued use without major changes until the early 20th century.
1.The best title for the passage is________.

C. about 2800 BC D. about 5000 BC
3.What can be inferred from the passage?
A. The wheel has a long history.
B. The wheel wasn't used until the 20th century.
C. Early wheels were simple wooden disks.
D. None of the above.

While sweet treats can be hard to say “no” to, the World Health Organization (WHO) has set new guidelines (准则) for people around the world. The guidelines advise that both adults and children eat less sugar to stay healthy. According to the WHO, reducing daily sugar intake “reduces the risk of overweight, obesity, and tooth decay (蛀牙)”.
The guidelines do not apply to the sugars in fresh fruits and vegetables or those that are naturally present in milk. According to the WHO, there is no reported evidence of bad effects of taking in those sugars. Instead, the new guidelines focus on “added” or “free” sugars. These include sugars that are added to certain foods and drinks such as donuts, cookies, candy, and soft drinks.
Added sugars are sometimes described as “hidden” sugars because they exist in foods we might not think of as sweets, such as honey. Health experts advise that people look at ingredients on food packages (包装) to help make better decisions.
The WHO suggests that people in the United States, Europe, and other Western societies should cut their average sugar intake by about two?thirds, or down to just 10% of their total calories. For developing countries, the WHO suggests that sugar intake be reduced to 5%.
In the U.S., adults now get about 11 to 15% of their calories from added, sugars. Children usually get even more. In Europe, sugar intake varies by country. For adults in Hungary and Norway, it is about 7%. In Spain and the United Kingdom, sugar makes up as much as 17% of adults' diets. The WHO reports that for children in Europe, sugar intake can be much higher, ranging from about 12% in Denmark, Slovenia, and Sweden, to nearly 25% in Portugal.
1.According to Paragraph 1, reducing daily sugar intake is________.
A. dangerous B. important
C. difficult D. unnecessary
2.Which of the following belong(s) to “hidden” sugars?
A. Sugars in full?cream milk.

A. don't really like sweet foods
B: are careful about their diets
C. are worried about their health

The Science Learning Centre in London asked 11,000 pupils for their views on science and scientists. Around 70% of the questioned pupils said they did not see scientists as “normal young and attractive men and women.”The research examined why fewer students chose science as their major in universities.
Researchers Roni Malek and Fani Stylianadou are completing their research in April but have studied around half the results so far. They found that around 80% of pupils thought that scientists did very “important work”, and 70% thought that they worked “creatively and imaginatively”. Only 40% said they thought that scientists did “boring and unchanging work”. Over three quarters of the pupils thought that scientists were “really brainy people”.
The research is working as part of Einstein Year. The pupils, who would not like to be scientists, said, “You would always be depressed and tired and not have time for family,”and “they all wear big glasses and white coats, but I don't want to be like that.”
Dr Stylianadou said:“These results are worrying for UK science but there is still hope. Young people see science as important and exciting. They don't just want to do it themselves.”
“If we can keep young people positive about science and help them to see the full range of scientific careers, more of them may realise that a career in science can be satisfying—even for them.”

I began to grow up that winter night when my parents and I were returning from my aunt's house, and my mother said that we might soon be leaving for America. We were on the bus then. I was crying, and some people on the bus were turning around to look at me. I remember that I could not bear the thought of never hearing again the radio program for school children to which I listened every morning.
I do not remember myself crying for this reason again. In fact, I think I cried very little when I was saying goodbye to my friends and relatives. When we were leaving, I thought about all the places I was going to see—the strange and magical places I had known only from books and pictures. The country I was leaving was hardly in my head then.
The four years that followed taught me the importance of optimism (乐观), but the idea did not come to me at once. For the first two years in New York I was really lost—having to study in three schools as a result of family moves. I did not quite know what I was or what I should be. Mother remarried, and things became even more complex for me. Some time passed before my stepfather and I got used to each other. I was often sad, and saw no end to “the hard times”.
My responsibilities in the family increased a lot since I knew English better than anyone else at home. I wrote letters, filled in forms, translated at interviews with immigration officers(移民局官员), took my grandparents to see the doctor and translated there, and even discussed telephone bills with company representatives.
From my experiences I have learned one important rule: Almost all common troubles go away at last! Something good is certain to happen in the end when you do not give up, and just wait! I believe that my life will turn out all right, even though it will not be that easy.
1. How did the author get to know America?
A. From radio programs.
B. From books and pictures.
C. From her mother.
D. From her relatives.
2.Upon leaving for America the author felt________.
A. excited B. confused
C. worried D. amazed
3. What can we learn about the author from Paragraph 4?
A. She worked as a translator.
B. She attended a lot of job interviews.
C. She paid telephone bills for her family.
D. She helped her family with her English.
4.The author believes that________.
A. her future will he free from troubles
B. it is difficult to learn to become patient
C. there are most good things than bad things
D. good things will happen if one keeps trying
由第二段中的“the strange and magical places I had known only from books and pictures”可知,作者在去美国之前是通过书籍和图片来了解美国的。

根据最后一段中的“Something good is certain to happen in the end when you do not give up...”

New research has found that even if you give up smoking, the damage it has done to your genes (基因) will stay there for a much longer time.
In the research, a team of US scientists studied the blood of 16, 000 people.Among them, some were smokers, some used to smoke, and the rest were non?smokers.Scientists compared their genes and found that more than 7, 000 genes of smokers had changed—a number that is one?third of known human genes.
According to NBC News, both heart disease and cancer are caused by genetic changes. Some people may have had the changes when they were born, but most people get them in their day?to?day lives while doing things like smoking.
When you stop smoking, a lot of these genes will return to normal within five years. This means your body is trying to heal (治愈) itself of the harmful effects of smoking. But the changes in some of the genes stay for longer. They can stay for as long as 30 years. It's almost like leaving a footprint on wet cement (水泥) — it will always be there, even when you've walked away and when the cement becomes dry.
Although the study results may make people unhappy, there is a bright side:the findings could help scientists invent medicine to treat genetic damage caused by smoking or find ways to tell which people have heart disease or cancer risks.
1.The function of Paragraph 1 is to__________.
A.give an example
B.arouse readers' interest
C.make an argument
D.give the main idea of the passage
2.Most genetic changes happen because of__________.
A.people's condition at birth
B.environmental pollution
C.people's bad living habits
D.heart disease and cancer
3.The underlined word “it” in Paragraph 4 refers to__________.
A.the cement B.the footprint
C.the harmful effects D.the genetic change
4.Which of the following statements is true?
A.The findings are the fruit of more than three years' research.
B.The findings have prevented more people from starting smoking.
C.The findings offer evidence that a damaged gene can heal itself.
D.The findings help to find cures for genetic damage caused by smoking.

由第一段“New research has found that even if you give up smoking, the damage it has done to your genes (基因) will stay there for a much longer time.”
由第三段“Some people may have had the changes when they were born, but most people get them in their day?to?day lives while doing things like smoking.”
由第四段“It's almost like leaving a footprint on wet cement (水泥) — it will always be there, even when you've walked away and when the cement becomes dry.”
由最后段“the findings could help scientists invent medicine to treat genetic damage caused by smoking or find ways to tell which people have heart disease or cancer risks.”

One day when I was 12, my mother gave me an order: I was to walk to the public library, and borrow at least one book for the summer. This was one more weapon for her to defeat my strange problem—inability to read.
In the library, I found my way into the “Children's Room.” I sat down on the floor and pulled a few books off the shelf at random. The cover of a book caught my eye.It presented a picture of a beagle.I had recently had a beagle, the first and only animal companion I ever had as a child. He was my secret sharer, but one morning, he was gone, given away to someone who had the space and the money to care for him.I never forgot my beagle.
There on the book's cover was a beagle which looked identical (相同的)to my dog.I ran my fingers over the picture of the dog on the cover. My eyes ran across the title, Amos, the Beagle with a Plan. Unknowingly, I had read the title.Without opening the book, I borrowed it from the library for the summer.
Under the shade of a bush, I started to read about Amos.I read very, very slowly with difficulty.Though pages were turned slowly, I got the main idea of the story about a dog who, like mine, had been separated from his family and who finally found his way back home. That dog was my dog, and I was the little boy in the book.At the end of the story, my mind continued the final scene of reunion, on and on, until my own lost dog and I were, in my mind, running together.
My mother's call returned me to the real world.I suddenly realized something: I had read a book, and I had loved reading that book. Everyone knew I could not read. But I had read it.Books could be incredibly wonderful and I was going to read them.
I never told my mother about my “miraculous” (奇迹般的) experience that summer, but she saw a slow but remarkable improvement in my classroom performance during the next year. And years later, she was proud that her son had read thousands of books, was awarded a PhD in literature, and authored his own books, articles, poetry and fiction. The power of the words has held.

“An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” Similarly, if we drink a little more water every day, we may find that we need to go to the doctor a lot less often.A healthy diet is made up of water and a great many different kinds of foods. We know that healthy foods like fruits, vegetables and fish, are important as they provide us with energy and fibre, without giving us too much fat and sugar. But why is water important?
The human body needs water to survive.Water is important as it carries poisons and waste out of our bodies. However, doctors advise us to drink plenty of water, much more than the small amount we need to stay alive.
Some doctors believe that water is important for our health in all kinds of ways. They believe that a great many illnesses and health problems start as a result of dehydration—a lack(缺少) of water in the body. Most people are dehydrated at least some of time, although they probably don't know it.It is surprising to learn that if we feel thirsty, we are already in the first stages of dehydration. In fact, we are advised to drink water before we feel thirsty.
These doctors think that health problems such as headaches, high blood pressure and asthma could be helped if people drink more water. They also believe that drinking more water can help people who are overweight.Water contains no calories so it will not make us put on weight. If we drink water, we will probably drink less sugary soft drinks such as Coca?cola.Doctors also believe that drinking more water may stop people from overeating. They say that many people think that they are hungry when they are, in fact, thirsty.Doctors suggest, therefore, that we eat less food and drink more water.
There are still many health problems that cannot be solved by drinking water, so we should not stop going to seeing the doctor completely. However, if we make a decision to drink water every day, we may find that we need to go to the doctor a lot less often.
