Last night around 2 am I didn't finish my work and I felt a little hungry. I decided to go to a shop by my house to pick up a snack. As I decided to go,a thought came to my mind that I should not spend all the money on food. Instead, I would save some money for a person in need.
On my way, as I walked towards the shop on the main street, I came across a homeless person sleeping on the road. As I passed him, I knew exactly what I was going to spend that money on. I said to myself, “This person is sleeping outside on the road in this cold weather. He needs care.” I wanted to put a smile on his face, the first thing in the morning. I wanted to help him.
I walked into the shop and bought one loss packet of chips for myself so I could get biscuits for the homeless man. As I walked back, I passed him. I was a little scared because I had to put the biscuits right next to his pillow and not disturb (打扰) his sleep. With slow steps, I managed to put the biscuits right next to him without making any sound. Then, I walked away.
When I got home, I replayed the whole experience in my head. Though it was nothing big, the surprise to him and the fact that he might not have to spend money or search for food when he woke up in the morning made me happy.

Researchers have studied the placebo(安慰剂) effects for many years. But there are still many unanswered questions. Why is a placebo effective(有效的)? Mostly, researchers have looked at the placebo effects on physical health. However, a research team in Sweden has produced some interesting findings about the emotional(情感的) effects of placebos.
The team performed a series of experiments. First the researchers showed a group of people unpleasant pictures, like pictures of dead bodies. The people rated(划分等级) how they felt after seeing the pictures. They gave the highest number to the pictures that gave them the worst feelings. The researchers then gave the people a calming drug. They told the people that the calming drug would decrease the unpleasant feelings from the pictures. When the team showed the pictures again, the people said that they felt much calmer.
The following day, the researchers gave the people unpleasant pictures to look at again. Then, they gave them drugs. However, this time they gave them a placebo instead of the calming drug. The placebo was nothing but salt and water. But the people did not know this.
After taking the placebo, the people's ratings still changed. Their unpleasant feelings decreased by almost 30%. It seemed that taking the placebo made them feel calmer. In the experiment, the scientists also used special equipment to look at their brains. The results showed that the brains' emotional centres were calmer after the people took the placebo.
Dr Predrag Petrovic managed the experiment. He said, “The placebo changes what we expect. When we expect that something unpleasant should become less unpleasant, it really does.”
20. What was special about the research carried out by the Swedish researchers?
A. It was about the placebo effects on physical health.
B. It tested the effects of placebos through experiments.
C. It answered many questions about placebo effects.
D. It explored the emotional effects of placebos.
21. When the people took the placebo, they probably thought________.
A. they were cheated
B. they got salt and water
C. they got calming drugs again
D. they took more effective drugs
22. Why did the researchers look at the people's brains?
A. To find out why they felt uncomfortable.
B. To see the change in emotional centres.
C. To see how emotional centres were formed.
D. To see the effects of unpleasant pictures on brains.
23. What can we infer from the last but one paragraph?
A. Placebos have no emotional effects.
B. It's easier to decrease emotional pain.
C. Placebos may decrease emotional pain.
D. It's difficult to judge emotional pain.

Dear Reader,
Today I am going to ask you to support Wikipedia with a donation.
Wikipedia is built differently from almost every other top 50 websites. We have a small number of paid staff, just twenty?three. Wikipedia content is free to use by anyone for any purpose. Our annual expenses are less than six million dollars. Wikipedia is run by the non?profit Wikimedia Foundation, which I founded in 2003.
Wikipedia is driven by a global community of more than 150,000 volunteers—all devoted to sharing knowledge freely. Over almost eight years, these volunteers have contributed more than 11 million articles in 265 languages. More than 275 million people come to our website every month to access information, free of charge and free of advertising.
But Wikipedia is more than a website. We share a common cause:Imagine a world in which every single person on the planet is given free access to the sum of all human knowledge. That's our commitment.
Your donation helps us in several ways. Most importantly, you will help us cover the increasing cost of managing global traffic to one of the most popular websites on the Internet. Funds also help us improve the software that runs Wikipedia—making it easier to search, easier to read, and easier to write for. We are committed to increasing the free knowledge movement worldwide,by taking on new volunteers, and building strategic partnerships with institutions of culture and learning.
Wikipedia is different. It's the largest encyclopedia (百科全书) in history, written by volunteers. Like a national park or a school,we don't believe advertising should have a place in Wikipedia. We want to keep it free and strong, but we need the support of thousands of people like you.
Thank you!

The Santa flag flying from the house is a signal that important work is going on in the workshop. It's not the North Pole, but rather the north side of the capital city of the US state of Indiana, where this secret Santa operation has been underway for months. Follow the path around the house to the workshop, and you'll find a lot of beautiful, simple wooden toys—cars, dolls, planes, tractors, ect. They are the kind you or your parents or grandparents might have played with more than half a century ago.
There's no sign of Father Christmas, but six old men and one old woman are working in a crowded space. They are members of Central Indiana Woodworkers. It's an all?volunteer operation that takes on special meaning this time of year. These woodworkers are here for the joy of creating something with their hands and the satisfaction of bringing a smile to a child's face, even if it's someone they'll never meet. But it's a happy group.
“If this club makes 10,000 toys a year, there will be 10,000 children whose Christmas is materially better because of what we do. That's the power of it,” said member Jim Mervilde, former head of Washington Township Schools. “For each one of these little toys, it's going to light a poor kid's whole Christmas up, and that's a big deal.”
They don't do it alone. Many businesses offer them the materials they need for free.
Although the toys look simple, they really attract kids according to Treva Burgess, volunteer and donor services coordinator for Mary Rigg Neighborhood Center. “I love the toys the woodworkers supply each year, and I have played with a number of them,” Burgess said. “They are really greatly made.”
44. What's the important work going on in the workshop?
A. Celebrating Christmas.
B. Collecting wooden toys.
C. Making toys for poor kids.
D. Playing with wooden toys.
45. Why are the six men and the woman referred to as a happy group?
A. Because they all enjoy playing with wooden toys.
B. Because they don't mind working in a crowded space.
C. Because they are willing to devote themselves to the work.
D. Because they are members of Central Indiana Woodworkers.
46. What Jim Mervilde said suggests that________.
A. there are not enough toys for poor children
B. the toys will bring great joy to poor children
C. it's a good business deal to make toys
D. they plan to make 10,000 toys this year
47. What do we know about Treva Burgess?
A. He thinks highly of the wooden toys.
B. He is the designer of the wooden toys.
C. He thinks that the wooden toys are too simple
D. He didn't have toys to play with when young.

One of the problems with passwords (密码) is that users forget them.In an effort to remember them, people use simple things like their dog's names and their birth dates—anything that will give them a clue to remember what their passwords are.But for a hacker(黑客), this is the same as locking your door and leaving the key under the doormat(门口地垫).
To create a safe password that is easy to remember, follow these simple steps:You should never use personal information as part of your password. It is very easy for someone to guess things like your last name and your pet's name.
With the help of today's computing power, it doesn't take long to try every word in the dictionary and find your password, so you'd better not use real words for your password.
You can make a password much safer by mixing different types of characters.Use some capital letters along with small letters, numbers and even special characters such as & and %.
In order not to create a password using different character types that is hard to remember or using a word from the dictionary, you can use a “passphrase(代码)”.Think of a sentence from a song or a poem that you like and create a password using the first letters from each word. For example, instead of just setting a password like “yr$1Hes”, you can take a sentence such as “I like to read the about.com Internet network security website” and make it a password like “il2rta!nsw” by using the number “2” for the word “to” and using “!” in place of “Internet”.You can use may characters types and create a safe password that is hard to guess, but much easier for you to remember.
41.The underlined word “clue” in the passage is similar to “__________” in meaning.
A.an explanation B.a condition
C.a conclusion D.a piece of information
42.According to the passage, a passphrase is made up of__________.
A.different capital letters
B.long English words from the dictionary
C.sentences from a song or a poem
D.the first letters from each word of a sentence
43.Which of the following passwords might be the best according to the passage?
A.jessica208. B.19890703.
C.il2rta!nsw. D.3About&5.
44.What is the best title for this passage?
