Leonardo da Vinci was born on April 15, 1452 in Italy. He is best known as an artist today. One of his famous paintings is called Mona Lisa. However, Leonardo had many other natural abilities. He was also a great inventor. Many of his inventions have become important in modern daily life.
Although Leonardo hated war, he invented many different machines used for war. His most special invention was the machine gun, which was produced and used in war many years later.
Leonardo tried to find out the secret of flying, so he watched the way birds fly. Among his sketches(素描) we can see many objects. We consider them as modern flying machines.
Leonardo spent many hours thinking about how to make good use of time. He developed ideas for labor-saving machines like cutting machines.
Leonardo was a strange man. He didn't eat any meat, which was very unusual in those times. He never published his ideas and discoveries. He usually used mirror writing, which look like writing in the mirror starting from the right side of the page and moving to the left.
We have very few of his works today. Leonardo finished only a few of his paintings. He left many unfinished because he thought they were not perfect. No one in his life time knew how great Leonardo was. We now believe, however, that he was one of the cleverest men that the world has ever known.

The population of the world continues to increase, but in some areas the population is falling. This is true in Europe and especially in Eastern Europe. In Russia, the population is going down by about 100 people EVERY HOUR! Russia's population could fall by ONE THIRD by the year 2050! And in Poland the population is also going down because people are leaving to work in other countries.
One of the main reasons is a change of lifestyle. All over Europe people, especially educated women, have a different attitude(态度) to children than their parents. “I have one child and she is enough for me,” said Galina Tereschkova, a doctor from Moscow. “My husband and I both work full-time. We can't imagine having more than one child.” Many women decide to have children later in life or not to have children at all. “I don't want to have any children until I have worked for at least 10 years,” said 19-year-old student Hana Markova from Prague. Her opinion is typical of 18-24 year old women everywhere in Europe.
In Poland, the population is going down for a different reason. A lot of people, usually aged between 20 and 30, are leaving the country to work abroad. Poland joined the European Union in 2005 and since then more than half a million people have moved to Britain, Germany, Spain and Italy. Even so, the population of those four countries and many other countries in West Europe is also going down.
Many governments are now encouraging people to have larger families. In France, women now receive nearly $1,000 a month for a year if they have a third child. Austrian women receive $700 a month for three years when they have their first child.
1.Where in the world is the population getting smaller?
?
2.How many children does Galina Tereschkova want to have?
?
3.What does Hana Markova want to do before she has children?

One day, a baby snail(蜗牛) found that he had to carry a big and heavy shell at any time. He was confused(困惑的), so he went up to his mother and asked, “Why was I born with a shell that grew so hard and heavy?” His mother said, “Because we don't have bones to hold us up. We can only move slowly, so we need a shell to protect us.”
The baby snail asked again, “The caterpillar(毛毛虫) has no bones, either, and she can't move quickly. Why can she live without a shell?” The mother snail answered, “That's because a caterpillar will become a butterfly (蝴蝶). She can fly high into the sky. The sky can protect her.”

Born in 1968, Li was the 4th of 5 children born to factory workers in Yangquan of Shanxi Province in northern China. Back then, Yangquan was an underdeveloped city that did not offer much to its people. Like most of the kids in the neighborhood, Li spent his childhood in hardships.

How Can You Become a Successful Learner?
Everyone is born with the ability to learn. But whether or not you can do this well depends on your learning habits. Research shows that successful learners have some good habits in common.
Creating an interest in what they learn
Studies show that if you are interested in something, your brain(脑) is more active and it is also easier for you to pay attention to it for a long time.Good learners often connect what they need to learn with something interesting. For example, if they need to learn English and they like music or sports, they can listen to English songs or watch sports programs in English. This way they will not get bored.
Practicing and learning from mistakes
Good learners think about what they are good at and what they need to practice more. Remember, “Use it or lose it!” Even if you learn something well, you will forget it unless you use it. “Practice makes perfect.” Good learners will keep practicing what they have learned, and they are not afraid of making mistakes. Alexander Graham Bell did not invent the telephone overnight. He succeeded by trying many times and learning from his mistakes.
Developing their study skills
It is not enough to just study hard. Good learners know the best way they can study. For example, they may take notes by writing down key words. They also look for ways to go over what they have learned. They may do this by reading their notes every day or by explaining the information to another student.
Asking questions
Good learners often ask questions during or after class. They even ask each other and try to find out the answers. Knowledge comes from questioning.
Learning is a lifelong journey because every day brings something new. Everything that you learn becomes a part of you and changes you, so learn wisely and learn well.

A beautiful, expensively dressed young lady came to see the doctor and complained that her whole life was empty: It had no meaning.

So the old lady put down her broom(笤帚) and began her story, “Good afternoon, madam. I'm a cleaner in this hospital. Now let me tell you something about my life experience. Well, my husband died of heart disease and three months later my only son was killed by a car. I had nobody…I had nothing left. So the next day I took some rice, vegetables and meat to my neighbor who was sick in bed. Every day I tried to do something nice for someone. It made me feel so happy to see them happy. Today, I don't know of anybody who sleeps and eats better than I do. I've found happiness, by giving it to others.”

The sports meeting held in our school included basketball and soccer matches. Our class took part in the women's basketball competition and beat Class 5, 25 to 3.
When we heard that we would fight against Class 5, we were shocked, because the girls in Class 5 are much more athletic than us and better at basketball. It made us want to give up. But then a confident voice, our team captain said, “No matter what happens, we will win the match” and “Just make every effort and you will be the best!”
These words woke me up, and my attitude immediately changed. We started to practice more during P. E. class and even at lunchtime. To build up physical strength for the 10-minute match, we practiced running every night after school. Falling down became an ordinary thing that happened every day, but no one on our team complained(抱怨). We all believed that our efforts would pay off.
Our match was held on March 28. During the match, I tried my best to run and get the basketball. The 10-minute match seemed to last a century. I couldn't even find the direction of the game, even after 5 minutes. Running was the only thing I could do.
But seeing that my classmates were cheering for us and that my teammates were fighting, I speeded up. I fell down twice trying to get the ball. But instead of taking a break, I got up quickly and refocused on the game. In the end our class got 25 points.
But it isn't winning that matters most; it is understanding the meaning of team spirit. By taking part in the match, I learned the lesson that no matter what situation we are in, we should believe in ourselves.

There are many holidays and festivals. Dads have Father's Day. Mums have Mother's Day. But do our grandparents have a special festival? Yes, they do!
The Double Ninth Festival is a special day for older people in China. It started long ago. The festival is on lunar September 9th. On this day, people show love and respect to their grandparents.
There are many ways in which Chinese people express their respect. When an older person enters a room, everyone stands. People are introduced from the oldest to the youngest. When we present a book to an older person, two hands are used. Young people always offer their seats to older people on a crowded subway or bus.
Respecting older people is a tradition in China. That's because the Chinese know that older people have knowledge and experience that young people can learn. Chinese people are proud of being old.
In Western countries, however, older people seldom think they are old. They are called “seniors” instead of “old people”. They'd rather do everything themselves. Even after retirement(退休) they take up hobbies, part-time jobs and new activities to keep their bodies working well.
Westerners respect their older people, too. Usually, seniors don't have to buy tickets for trains and buses. They are given discounts(打折) in stores and restaurants.
But Western seniors don't often live with their children—they live alone. For holidays, the family usually gather at the grandparents' home, and a great smile and a warm hug for their parents are enough for grown children to show their respect.
1.When is the Double Ninth Festival?
?
2.How many ways in which Chinese people express their respect are mentioned?

I am Canadian. I started learning French when I was 10 years old. But my whole experience with the language was in the classroom. All of that changed, however, during my last summer of high school. As a 17-year-old girl, I flew across the country by myself for the first time! I headed for Quebec to live in the province with a French-speaking host family, who didn't speak any English. And I would learn French at a local school.
On the first day of school, all of us students were given a test to determine (测定)our language level. We were required to speak only French all summer.
I made every effort to communicate in a second language by making new friends, seeing movies and even ordering food from restaurants in French. Though I couldn't understand most of it at the very beginning, the whole experience was exciting and refreshing.
On weekends, my classmates and I took trips to different places around the province. On one trip, we went whale watching on the St. Lawrence River. Even though it was raining, we could see huge whales swimming around our boat. The most memorable part of our trip was a visit to historic Quebec City. I walked along the stone streets, took pictures of the European-style (欧式的) buildings, and learned some stories there.
Finally my efforts paid off! At the end of the summer, I was able to communicate pretty well. I couldn't wait to go back to school and talk with my French teacher. Being fully immersed (沉浸)in a French-speaking environment was a valuable learning experience. And it could be the main reason for my improvement in French.
