Unit 1
Living well

Byron Defeats His Disability
Being fond of bowling, Byron had two ambitions, which were either to get an architect certificate or to be a chemist. One day, when he was conducting an experiment under a microscope in the basement, a tank on the bench suddenly exploded, throwing him outwards through the exit. When he got to know he lost his eyesight as well as 50% of his hearing, he was out of breath. In other words, he was disabled.
In the beginning, Byron was annoyed about his own clumsiness although no one made fun of him.

He cut out going out and just sat around at home talking to his so-called friends — a parrot and a tortoise. Fearing that he would kill himself, Byron’s mother resigned and managed to help him in many ways. Her encouragement and assistance were so beneficial to his psychology that he adapted to his disability in a short time and became outgoing again. In a university accessible to him, he studied literature and politics. He often sat in the front row near the entry of the classroom and was never absent from any lessons. With the help of his handy laptop, he studied well by means of dictating.

His book Abolishing Slavery, met with all teachers’ approval. In his spare time, he often played drum music which was noisy but suitable for his hearing with his companions.
After graduation, he made a large profit for a firm by designing software. All in all, he won his own dignity and people’s congratulations in his company and community. In addition, he always wished all the best to his disabled fellows and encouraged them, “Never mind! All you have is completely adequate for you to realize any dream you want to.”
