A
1976:Tangshan,China
China has had the second deadliest earthquake on record, the 1976 Great Tangshan Earthquake, which happened in the country’s northeast. It’d be more accurate(精确) to call this a double quake:an aftershock that happened 16 hours after the original earthquake measured 7.8 on the Richter scale (里氏震级) and was equally destructive.
2004:Indian Ocean Tsunami(印尼海啸)
On December 26,2004,a 9.2 magnitude earthquake rocked the bottom of the Indian Ocean, releasing energy equal to that of 23,000 atomic bombs. The largest earthquake in 40 years, the Sumatra-Andaman earthquake caused a tsunami across the Indian Ocean, sending a series of waves as high as 50 feet crashing onto the shores of 11 countries. Some people were swept out to sea while others drowned in their homes, unable to escape.According to the US geological survey, the official death toll was 227,898.
2008:Sichuan earthquake,China
The 7.9-magnitude disaster struck the mountainous Sichuan Province in western China, destroying millions of buildings and causing $86 billion damage.Nearly 10,000 children died in schools —trapped under rubble(瓦砾) when the buildings fell down.
2011:Tōhoku earthquake,Japan
The 2011 earthquake and tsunami swept the Japanese mainland and killed more than 16,000 people and over 2,500 people were reported missing.More than 470,000 were displaced from their homes. The 9.0—9.1-magnitude disaster was the most powerful earthquake ever recorded in Japan, and the fourth most powerful earthquake in the world since modern record-keeping began in 1900.

One of the greatest sources of unhappiness,in my experience,is the difficulty we have in accepting things as they are.
When we see something we don’t like,we wish it could be different. We cry out for something better. That may be human nature,or perhaps it’s something ingrained(根深蒂固的) in our culture. The root of the unhappiness isn’t necessarily that we want things to be different. However,it’s that we decided we didn’t like it in the first place. We’ve judged it as bad, rather than saying,“It’s not bad or good, and it just is it.”
In one of my books,I said,“You should expect people to mess up and expect things to go differently than you planned”.Some readers said it’s too sorrowful to expect things to go wrong. However,it’s only negative(消极的) if you see it as negative and judge it as bad.Instead, you could accept it as the way the world works and try to understand why that is.
This can be applied to(应用于) whatever you do:how other people act at work, how politics works and how depressing the news media can be.Accept these things as they are,and try to understand why they’re that way.It will save you a lot of sadness, because you’ll no longer say,“Oh.I wish bad things didn’t happen!”
Does it mean you can never change things? Not at all.But change things not because you can’t accept things as they are,but because you enjoy the process of changing, learning and growing.
Can we make this world a better place? You can say that you’ll continue to try to do things to help others,to grow as a person,to make a difference in this world. That’s the correct path you choose to take, because you enjoy that path. Therefore, when you find yourself judging and wishing for difference, try a different approach:accept, and understand. It might lead to some interesting results.

The Boy Made It!
One Sunday,Nicholas,a teenager, went skiing at Sugarloaf Mountain in Maine. In the early afternoon, when he was planning to go home,a strong snowstorm swept into the area.Unable to see far,he turned off the path by accident. Before he knew it,Nicholas was lost, all alone! He didn’t have food, water,a phone,or other supplies. He was getting colder by the minute.
Nicholas had no idea where he was.He tried not to panic. He thought about all the survival shows he had watched on TV.It was time to put the tips he had learned to use.
He decided to stop skiing. There was a better chance of someone finding him if he stayed where he was.The first thing he did was to find a shelter from the freezing wind and snow.Using his skis,Nicholas built a snow cave.He gathered a huge mass of snow and dug out a hole in the middle. Then he piled branches on top of himself, like a blanket,to stay as warm as he could. He huddled (蜷缩) in his cave and slept.
The next day,Nicholas went out to look for help, but he couldn’t find anyone. He followed his tracks and returned to the snow cave, because without shelter,he could die that night. On Tuesday,Nicholas went out again to find help and he was found by a volunteer searcher. After two days stuck in the snow,Nicholas was saved.
Nicholas might not have survived this snowstorm had it not been for TV.He had often watched Grylls’ survival show Man vs.Wild.That’s where he learned the tips that saved his life.In each episode(一期节目) of Man vs.Wild,Grylls is abandoned(遗弃) in a wild area and has to find his way out. When Grylls heard about Nicholas’ amazing deeds,he was impressed that Nicholas had made it since he knew better than anyone how hard Nicholas had to work to stay alive.

A volcano is a geological landform usually caused by the eruption through a vent(火山口) in a planet’s surface of magma(岩浆),molten rock welling up from the planet’s interior. 1 ?
A popular way of judging volcanoes goes by their frequency(频率) of eruption. 2 Those that have erupted in historical times but are now quiet called dormant(休眠的) and those that have not erupted in historical times called extinct.?
3 The lifespan of a volcano can vary from months to several million years, making such a distinction(辨别) sometimes meaningless when compared to the lifespans of humans or even civilisations. For example, many of the earth’s volcanoes have erupted dozens of times in the past few thousand years but are not currently showing signs of eruption.Given the long lifespan of such volcanoes, they are very active. 4 ?
Scientists usually consider a volcano active if it is currently erupting or showing signs of unrest, such as unusual earthquake activity or significant new gas emissions. 5 It is important to note that the span of recorded history differs from region to region. In the Mediterranean, recorded history reaches back more than 3,000 years but in the Pacific Northwest of the United States,it reaches back less than 300 years, and in Hawaii, little more than 200 years. The Smithsonian Global Volcanism programme’s definition of “active” is having erupted within the last 10,000 years.?

(2019·全国卷Ⅲ)
For Western designers,China and its rich culture have long been an inspiration for Western creative.
“It’s no secret that China has always been a source(来源) of inspiration for designers,”says Amanda Hill, chief creative officer at A+E Networks,a global media company and home to some of the biggest fashion(时尚) shows.
Earlier this year, the China Through A Looking Glass exhibition in New York exhibited 140 pieces of China-inspired fashionable clothing alongside Chinese works of art, with the aim of exploring the influence of Chinese aesthetics(美学) on Western fashion and how China has fueled the fashionable imagination for centuries. The exhibition had record attendance, showing that there is huge interest in Chinese influences.
“China is impossible to overlook,” says Hill.“Chinese models are the faces of beauty and fashion campaigns that sell dreams to women all over the world, which means Chinese women are not just consumers of fashion—they are central to its movement.”Of course, not only are today’s top Western designers being influenced by China—some of the best designers of contemporary fashion are themselves Chinese.“Vera Wang,Alexander Wang,Jason Wu are taking on Galliano,Albaz,Marc Jacobs—and beating them hands down in design and sales,”adds Hill.?
For Hill,it is impossible not to talk about China as the leading player when discussing fashion.“The most famous designers are Chinese,so are the models, and so are the consumers,”she says.“China is no longer just another market;in many senses it has become the market. If you talk about fashion today, you are talking about China—its influences, its direction, its breathtaking clothes, and how young designers and models are finally acknowledging that in many ways.”
【语篇导读】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了中国文化及中国美学对国际时尚的影响,展现了中国对国际时尚和设计发展的引领作用。

2.What does Hill say about Chinese women?
A.They are setting the fashion.
B.They start many fashion campaigns.
C.They admire super models.
D.They do business all over the world.

3.What do the underlined words “taking on” in paragraph 4 mean?
A.learning from B.looking down on
C.working with D.competing against

4.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Young Models Selling Dreams to the World
B.A Chinese Art Exhibition Held in New York
C.Differences Between Eastern and Western Aesthetics
D.Chinese Culture Fueling International Fashion Trends
答案D

“He who bears the greatest hardship becomes the greatest man.” This idiom shows Chinese people’s traditional belief in the vital role that hardship plays in a person’s life as they grow up.But today,as our lives have greatly improved,do we still need this so-called “hardship education”?
“We certainly do,” said Wang Weiqiong, mother of a 15-year-old girl in Jiangxi,“Many children take everything for granted,as they’ve never known how difficult it is to make money.”
Wang is not alone.According to a recent survey of 2,017 people done by China Youth Daily.81.8 percent of the interviewees supported hardship education including experiencing life in poor areas, outdoor training, taking part-time jobs, and doing housework.
Qiao Yu,from Tianjin Foreign Languages School, also supports the idea.“Hardship helps us grow and be prepared for the difficulties of society,” said the 18-year-old,who worked in a cake store this summer.
But while it contributes to students’ development,“hardship education shouldn’t be seen as simply making students suffer,” Sun Yunxiao, deputy director of the China Youth and Children Research Centre told China Youth Daily.“It should follow teenagers’ growth.” Sun said that students could also do sports to learn to face difficulties, for doing sports can greatly strengthen their bodies and minds.

42答案A
解析本题所在句子提到巴士司机心脏病发作了,再根据第二段描述的当时的场景可知,司机趴倒在方向盘上,失去了知觉,无法再操控巴士了,因此这位英语老师即后面提到的哈罗德控制了巴士。take control of sth“控制某物”。

My name is Albert, and I live in Chantilly,Va.I will tell you what happened to me on June 24,1996,when I was 13 years old.I was at home looking after my sister, who was mentally handicapped(残疾).My father was at work while my mother and younger sister were at my mom’s office.
I had noticed the clouds growing darker and the ones to the East were turning green. At first I thought nothing of it,but then on the TV,the weather reporter was announcing a big thunderstorm warning, one that usually brings hail and heavy rain.
