A
My favourite book is The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain. Tom lives with his aunt Polly in a quiet street of St. Petersburg, Missouri. He’s a lively and clever young boy, and he finds himself in many exciting adventures. He runs away with his two friends, Huck Finn and Joe, to an island in the middle of the Mississippi River for several days. With Huck he goes looking for treasure, with Becky he gets lost in a cave. And finally, they find a box of gold.
My favourite scene in the book is when everyone thinks Tom is dead. He decides to go to his own funeral. He hides and watches for a time and then suddenly he appears. Everyone is astonished to see him but they’re also pleased to see him alive.
Tom is the hero of the story, but there are other important characters. Huck is an outsider and everyone is afraid of him. Becky is pretty with fair hair. Joe is Tom’s best friend. And Injun Joe is the bad man of the story.
The theme of the story is about children growing up. It describes how strangers are seen in small towns of America. Finally, it talks about freedom, social rules and how people are punished for bad behaviour.
Why do I think The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is a great book? Mark Twain wrote the story in 1876,but it’s still read and loved by people all over the world today. And although it’s only a story, Twain wrote it in the everyday English of the southern states of America in the 19th century, so it sounds very real. Today it’s thought to be one of the greatest books in American literature. Go on—read it!I know you’ll enjoy it, too.

When school started on that warm August day, I threw myself into everything I did, including playing volleyball. I decided to become beautiful, or at the very least, skinny. I stopped eating completely. Soon I began losing weight, which thrilled me, and I even grew to love the tiredness and lightheadedness(头晕) that came with my poor diet, for those feelings meant that I was winning.
As the season progressed, things had become tense between my head volleyball coach, Coach Smith, and me. She felt that something was wrong with my health. She talked with me about my eating and was angry that I wouldn’t listen to her when she tried to make me eat. She tried to persuade me in a determined way and so we fought constantly. Then my hunger started to affect my performance. I was so tired that practice and games were becoming a struggle. One afternoon, with hurt in her eyes, Coach Smith asked me what I had eaten and I told her nothing yet. She looked at me, disappointment in her eyes, knowing she couldn’t make me stop, and walked away.
A couple of weeks later I attended a formal dinner for our volleyball team. I stood there as my coach managed to say something nice about me. I realised then that I had ruined my senior year by being disrespectful, and I had probably ruined hers as well. So that evening I wrote her a letter apologizing and thanking her.
Then one Saturday, as I was reading in the library, I felt someone gently take my arm and say softly, “Lynn Jones, how are you doing?” I looked up and saw the familiar face.“Thanks for the letter,” she said.“It meant a lot.” When I think of a coach, I think of someone above me, someone who gives instruction—not a friend. But Coach Smith is different, and, like any other good friend, she dealt with my problem in a determined way even when I hated her for it at that time. I didn’t deserve her kindness, but she gave it anyway. I will forever be grateful for her help, and now for her friendship.
25.How did the author feel when she ate a poor diet and had a sense of tiredness?

B. She was grateful for Coach Smith’s care for her health.
C. She decided to improve her performance.
D. She wanted to build a close relationship with Coach Smith.
28.What is the best title for the text?
A. My Way of Losing Weight
B.A Fight with My Coach
C.A Strict Volleyball Coach

In America, when the eighth graders leave the middle school, they are often worried about moving to the high school. It is a hard time for them, but it can be an exciting one as well. To make it easier, students need to get familiar with their school.
Even though they’ve done this already in the middle school, it’s still important to find where their classrooms are. Most schools take students to the high school for a visit at the end of their eighth grade year. And, most schools also have a freshman (新生) speech for parents and students before the first year begins. Sometimes the main office will give away a map of the school. This can help students and parents to find different places in the school.
One way to know your high school more and make new friends is to join a club or play a sport. Schools often offer chances to join different clubs and sports. Fall activities begin in August before the first day of school. If you are not interested in sports, there are clubs for any interest, such as drama, dance, chess, photography, community service, etc. These clubs allow students from different grades. By joining an activity, students can find new friendships, not to mention improving their chances in future college applications (申请).The school office will have a list of activities offered at the school and information on how to join them.
What’s more, to have a great start to a high school year, students can write down some of their worries, and ask for help from teachers and school workers.
29.What do most students feel when entering the high school?
A. Excited. B. Nervous.
C. Lonely. D. Disappointed.
30.What do we know about the school clubs?
A. There are fewer students from higher grades in the school clubs.
B. The school clubs in high school only welcome sports fans.
C. Summer activities begin before the school starts.
D. The school can help new students join school clubs.
31.When do many schools take students to visit their new high school?
A. Before the eighth grade year starts.
B. Right after the high school year starts.
C. At the end of their eighth grade year.
D. At the beginning of the new term in the high school.
32.What is the purpose of this text?
A. To tell the new students how to learn in high school.
B. To introduce new schools.
C. To give the teachers some advice.
D. To give advice to new high school students.
D
As children we are well-trained to find the right answer. We are rewarded for A’s, the honour roll and acing the test. Our education trains us to follow the rules and deliver the expected answers. When we do, awards and congratulations follow. Yet when we grow up, it gets a little harder. Life and careers don’t have tests with an A if we get the “right” answer.
I recently had coffee with a college student who will graduate. She is struggling with what she wants for her career. She wants her parents to be proud of her and to continue the success she has had in school. She also talked about other students in her graduating class who are set to do “some big things”, like working for impressive companies. Yet she wasn’t sure of the right answer for using her degree. She said that deep down she was hoping that someone might give her the answer.
We both agreed that it comes down to not looking for the right answer, but her answer. The grown-up definition of the “right answer” is different than that in school. What would you do if you weren’t afraid? It takes time to know these answers. And they can change over time and at any point in your career. My encouragement is to get valued advice and input, of course, but finally to look within yourself for the answers. It helps to come back to:
What do I want to be known for? What is my definition of success? What am I best at?
If I had no fears, what would I do?
What is one step I can take today to move me toward my goal (even if it’s not perfectly clear)?
I find these types of questions are more helpful at getting to our unique answer rather than “right answer” questions, such as: What will my parents want? What degree or job will mark me as accomplished to the world? What is my best option based on where I work today?
33.What does the author mean to say in the first paragraph?
A. Life is harder for adults than children.
B. Academic excellence is not necessary.
C. It is not helpful to follow the rules in school.
D. Rules in life are different from those in school.
34.What is wrong with the college student?
A. She does badly in her studies.
B. Her parents are not proud of her.
C. She feels puzzled about her life career.
D. She is not sure whether to do “some big things”.
35.When looking for the answer in life, you need to .?
A. trust your parents
B. listen to your heart
C. follow valued advice
D. learn from your classmates
36.Which of the following questions might not help you to seek your answer?
A. What do I love to do?
B. What matters most to me in life?
C. What will make me look successful?
D. What will I regret not doing when I’m 80?

I was a volunteer for an organisation at the beginning of this year. The organisation is aimed at helping children who suffer from cancer. One day, we were asked to raise money for cancer research and programme funding at an event.?
Since my friend Lisa was also a volunteer for the organisation, I went to the event with her. There were many people at the event. After seeing our poster, some people came to us and talked with us. But few people donated money. It was a bit hot that day. Both Lisa and I got really upset.?
Half an hour later, Lisa started complaining, “I don’t think we can raise much money today.”
“Don’t worry. The event lasts for three hours. There is still a lot of time left,” I said, though I also thought poorly of our plan to raise much money that day.
While Lisa and I were talking, a little boy of about eight years old came to us. He stood in front of our poster and started reading.?
After a while, he asked, “What is cancer?”
I explained what cancer is. Then I said,“ Many people around the world are suffering from cancer. It can be really dangerous. More research is needed to learn about it so that people with it can suffer less. That’s why we’re collecting money for it.”?
“Do children suffer from cancer, too?” asked the boy.
“Yes. Many children suffer from cancer. Some of them may die .They need help,” Lisa said and I nodded.
Hearing that, the boy became sad. Then the boy asked, “How much money have you collected?”
Both Lisa and I were embarrassed to tell him that we didn’t raise much money. At last, we said, “Not much.”
The boy looked into our donation container and only saw a few one-dollar and five-dollar bills. The boy said nothing after seeing that and left. Then some girls came to us and we started talking with them. Neither Lisa nor I thought the boy would return. However, about twenty minutes later, the boy did return.?

Ⅲ.阅读理解
(2018·全国卷Ⅱ)
Teens and younger children are reading a lot less for fun, according to a Common Sense Media report published Monday.
While the decline over the past decade is steep for teen readers, some data in the report shows that reading remains a big part of many children’s lives, and indicates how parents might help encourage more reading.
According to the report’s key findings, “the proportion(比例) who say they ‘hardly ever’ read for fun has gone from 8 percent of 13-year-olds and 9 percent of 17-year-olds in 1984 to 22 percent and 27 percent respectively today.”
The report data shows that pleasure reading levels for younger children, ages 2—8,remain largely the same. But the amount of time spent in reading each session has declined, from closer to an hour or more to closer to a half hour per session.
When it comes to technology and reading, the report does little to counsel(建议) parents looking for data about the effect of e-readers and tablets on reading. It does point out that many parents still limit electronic reading, mainly due to concerns about increased screen time.
The most hopeful data shared in the report shows clear evidence of parents serving as examples and important guides for their kids when it comes to reading. Data shows that kids and teens who do read frequently, compared to infrequent readers, have more books in the home, more books purchased for them, parents who read more often, and parents who set aside time for them to read.
As the end of school approaches, and school vacation reading lists loom(逼近) ahead, parents might take this chance to step in and make their own summer reading list and plan a family trip to the library or bookstore.

There are several reasons why school uniforms are a good idea. First of all, uniforms help the school look smart. The students feel that they belong to a particular group. When every pupil in the school wears the uniform, nobody 1 (have) to worry about fashion(时尚).Everybody wears 2 same style of clothes. Uniforms can be useful in unexpected ways. A school in Ireland has introduced an interesting new uniform. On the edge of the jacket, there is a piece of cloth 3 gives off light in the dark. When the children are walking or 4 (cycle) to school on dark mornings, car drivers can 5 (easy) see them.?
But can uniforms help improve school standards? The answer 6 this question is not clear. One study in America found that students’ grades 7 (improve) a little after the school introduced uniforms. But some students didn’t want 8 (wear) the uniform. Other American studies showed no 9 (connect) between uniforms and school performance.?
School uniforms are 10 (tradition) in Britain, but some schools are starting to get rid of them. Some very good schools don’t have a uniform policy. However, uniforms are still popular. Pupils at about 90 percent of British secondary schools wear uniforms.?
答案与解析
【语篇导读】对于学生应不应该穿校服上学,一直以来都是个有争议的问题。研究表明,穿校服上学有一定的益处,在学校中仍占主流。
1.has/will have 考查时态。
3.that/which 考查定语从句引导词。由于先行词为a piece of cloth,从句缺少主语,所以填that/which。
want to do sth.意为“想要做某事”。
9.connection/connections 考查名词。根据空前的no和空后的between uniforms and school performance可知,此处应用connect的名词形式。因为no后可接名词的单数形式,也可以接名词的复数形式,故答案为connection/connections。
10.traditional 考查形容词。根据空前的系动词are,可知此处用tradition的形容词形式。Section C Discovering Useful Structures & Listening and Talking

Age has never been a problem for 16-year-old Thessalonika Arzu-Embry .After all, she’s already got her master’s degree.
The North Chicago-area teen started homeschooling at the age of 4.She began having an influence on others soon after. When she was 6 years old, she was an inspirational speaker at an organisation called Tabitha House Community Service, a shelter for people who were forced to leave their homes due to the situations such as earthquake, flood and other natural disasters.
At the age of 11,she graduated from high school and then earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology in 2013.She completed those classes online as she was travelling for church events and leadership meetings.
She doesn’t stop there, though. The teen plans to focus on aviation psychology(航空心理学) for her further study, a decision inspired by her father who is a pilot. She grew up around airplanes and took fights all the time. Her goal is to use it to determine whether pilots are dealing with problems that could have deadly results once the plane takes off—a topic that has been in the news lately. For her, it’s a mix of two of her interests.
In her free time, Thessalonika enjoys playing tennis, swimming and being active in her youth group at church. She also has three self-published books, which are on her site. Jump the Education Barrier is written to help students finish college, and In the Future aims to help business owners with trends. Her third book The Genius Race, has a wider appeal. It is designed to help people to be geniuses in various areas of life.

My sister and I were flying by ourselves from our home in Kansas to a summer camp in Minnesota. Our plane had a two-hour stop at the airport in Omaha, Nebraska. A flight attendant took us to a souvenir shop, where a toy airplane looked just like the plane my sister and I were flying on. I really wanted that airplane. I had $10 and the plane cost $8.I had no idea what I needed to buy at camp, but I bought the plane anyway. When we reached the camp, I discovered that there were no showers! Instead, we bathed in a lake every night. I needed to buy special soap because the regular soap I brought had chemicals that could harm the fish. The special soap cost $4 at the camp store. However, I had only $2 left.
What upset me was that I couldn’t get clean without the soap, which was soon found by my teacher, Sally. I had to tell her that I had spent most of my money on a toy airplane. She laughed and explained to me that a budget was necessary and it was a plan for spending money to help make sure you set aside enough for things you need, like soap, before you buy fun things, like toys.
Sally gave me one of her extra(额外的) bottles of special soap. When I returned home, I decided to budget. I spent several weeks writing down everything I bought, just to get an idea of how I was already spending my money. Then I made my first weekly budget. My budget wasn’t always the same each week. For some weeks, I would have more in my “Money In” account because I did some jobs around the house. Once summer vacation started, I didn’t need to buy school lunches, so I had extra money to go to the neighborhood swimming pool or to give to the town animal shelter.
Budgeting was hard, sometimes. Whatever week it was, I always made sure that “Money In” equaled “Save and Spend”. That’s called making ends meet, and it’s how you make sure that the money you have will always be enough to cover your plans to spend and save.

I’m anxious about my future. And I know that’s a bit weird at this age because I’m only in the eighth grade. But I have a ton of things I want to do when I grow up, and I’m worried that I won’t get to do them. They’re all those unrealistic things that literally every kid wants to do at some point—you know, dancer, actor, singer, and writer.
But I’m actually really invested in learning such things. I dance and act regularly, and I love to write stories and songs, and I also record and sing them. But what happens after college? I only have four years until I go to college, so what do I do after that if I really want to achieve my goals? I know I have a while to decide what I really want to do, but sometimes I get stressed about growing up and worry that I’ll never be able to do what I love. Any advice?

Dear Dreamer,
I totally understand what you’re concerned about—you do so much and want to keep doing that much—and I felt the same way in high school. What I learned was that eventually all those activities became too much, and I had to stop doing some of them. You should definitely try really hard to do what you love—it’s one of the ways to live a happy life.
However, you may need to shift priorities and focus on some things over other things. For example,if you’re a terrific dancer, you might end up focusing on dance—and that’s okay! You can still sing, write, and record on the side.Although you might have to spend less time on those things, you can still be great at them. And stay flexible since your priorities might change from one year to the next.

The boy happily ran to us and asked, “Would you take a donation from children?”Lisa and I looked at each other. We couldn’t believe such a little boy would care. Though we didn’t believe it, we said “yes”. The boy put his hand in his pocket and took out some five-dollar bills. He said, “I just asked for them from my mother. I really want to help the children suffering from cancer.”?
Both Lisa and I were deeply touched. We thanked the boy, but he left soon. Looking at his back, both Lisa and I were greatly encouraged. We wanted to try harder to raise money. So instead of just standing there, we went to people and told them about our programme. At the end of the day, we raised over three thousand dollars, a lot more than Lisa and I had expected in the beginning.?
