By the end of the century,if not sooner, the world's oceans will be bluer and greener thanks to a warming climate, according to a new study.
At the heart of the phenomenon lie tiny marine microorganisms(海洋微生物)called phytoplankton.Because of the way light reflects off the organisms, these phytoplankton create colourful patterns at the ocean surface.Ocean colour varies from green to blue, depending on the type and concentration of phytoplankton.Climate change will fuel the growth of phytoplankton in some areas, while reducing it in other spots, leading to changes in the ocean's appearance.
Phytoplankton live at the ocean surface, where they pull carbon dioxide(二氧化碳)into the ocean while giving off oxygen. When these organisms die, they bury carbon in the deep ocean,an important process that helps to regulate the global climate. But phytoplankton are vulnerable to the ocean's warming trend.Warming changes key characteristics of the ocean and can affect phytoplankton growth, since they need not only sunlight and carbon dioxide to grow, but also nutrients.
Stephanie Dutkiewicz,a scientist in MIT's Center for Global Change Science, built a climate model that projects changes to the oceans throughout the century. In a world that warms up by 3℃,it found that multiple changes to the colour of the oceans would occur. The model projects that currently blue areas with little phytoplankton could become even bluer. But in some waters, such as those of the Arctic,a warming will make conditions riper for phytoplankton, and these areas will turn greener.“Not only are the quantities of phytoplankton in the ocean changing.”she said,“but the type of phytoplankton is changing.”
And why does that matter?Phytoplankton are the base of the food web.If certain kinds begin to disappear from the ocean,Dutkiewicz said,“it will change the type of fish that will be able to survive.”Those kinds of changes could affect the food chain.
Whatever colour changes the ocean experiences in the coming decades will probably be too gradual and unnoticeable, but they could mean significant changes.“It'll be a while before we can statistically show that the changes are happening because of climate change,”Dutkiewicz said,“but the change in the colour of the ocean will be one of the early warning signals that we really have changed our planet.”
1.What are the first two paragraphs mainly about?
A.The various patterns at the ocean surface.
B.The cause of the changes in ocean colour.
C.The way light reflects off marine organisms.
D.The efforts to fuel the growth of phytoplankton.
2.What does the underlined word“vulnerable”in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Sensitive. B.Beneficial.
C.Significant. D.Unnoticeable.
3.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Phytoplankton play a declining role in the marine ecosystem.
B.Dutkiewicz's model aims to project phytoplankton changes.
C.Phytoplankton have been used to control global climate.
D.Oceans with more phytoplankton may appear greener.
4.What is the main purpose of the passage?
A.To assess the consequences of ocean colour changes.
B.To analyse the composition of the ocean food chain.
C.To explain the effects of climate change on oceans.
D.To introduce a new method to study phytoplankton.
第一段“By the end of the century. If not sooner, the world's oceans will be bluer and greener thanks to a warming climate, according to a new study.” 结合第二段中的“At the heart of the phenomenon lie tiny marine microorganisms(海洋微生物)called phytoplankton.Because of the way light reflects off the organisms, these phytoplankton create colourful patterns at the ocean surface.Ocean colour varies from green to blue, depending on the type and concentration”可知,这种现象的核心是一种叫作浮游植物的微小海洋微生物,在光线的作用下在海洋表面形成了五颜六色的图案。
根据划线词后的“Warming changes key characteristics of the ocean and can affect phytoplankton growth, since they need not only sunshine and carbon dioxide to grow, but also nutrients.” 由此可判断“But phytoplankton are vulnerable to the ocean's warming trend”可知,浮游植物很容易受到海洋变暖趋势的影响。
根据第四段中的“The model projects that currently blue areas with little phytoplankton could become even bluer. But in some waters, such as those of the Arctic, a warming will make conditions riper for phytoplankton, and these areas will turn greener”,可知“Dutkiewicz的模型预测,目前只有少量浮游植物的蓝色区域可能会变得更蓝。但是在一些水域,比如北极,气候变暖会使浮游植物的生长条件更加成熟,而这些水域会变得更绿了”。由此可推断,浮游植物的生长条件更加成熟,浮游动植物就更多了,这些水域会变得更绿了。分析选项可知D项符合题意。
4.C 主旨大意题。第一段提出文章的主旨“By the end of the century,if not sooner, the world's oceans will be bluer and greener thanks to a warming climate, according to a new study.” 再结合第三段中“But phytoplankton are vulnerable to the ocean's warming trend.Warming changes key characteristics of the ocean and can affect phytoplankton growth,...”

How did the sea horse get its name? It's not hard to guess. The top half of this fish looks like a small horse. But looking at the sea horse's tail, you might think “sea monkey”is a better name. Then there's the sea horse's pouch (袋).“Sea kangaroo” might also be a good name for this fish.
Sea horses live in warm ocean waters all over the world. They keep safe from other fish by hiding in plants and grasses that grow under the sea. They can also change colors to match their surroundings (环境).A sea horse remains in one place for hours at a time by winding (缠绕) its tail around a plant. It feeds on live food, such as small shrimp. For a fish that doesn't move around much, the sea horse eats a lot—in just one day, a sea horse can eat 3,000 shrimp!
A sea horse keeps the same mate for its whole life, and it's the male (雄的) sea horse that gives birth to baby sea horses. How does this happen? Baby sea horses start out as eggs, which come from the female's body. The male carries the eggs in its pouch for about three weeks until they hatch (孵化).Soon after the babies are born, the female gives her mate a new set of eggs. The male sea horse spends most of its life carrying eggs.
Sadly, the number of sea horses is becoming smaller. Why is this happening? Some places where sea horses once lived have been filled in to make new land. Also, many sea horses are caught and sold as aquarium fish. This really is not a good idea because most sea horses don't live long in aquariums. The best place for a sea horse is the ocean.
5.How does a sea horse keep safe from other fish?
A.It hides in plants and grasses.
B.It runs away quickly.
C.It remains still.
D.It rolls up.
6.What does a female sea horse do with her eggs?
A.She puts them in the male's pouch.
B.She hides them in sea grasses.
C.She carries them around.
D.She hatches them.
7.Why is the number of sea horses becoming smaller?
A.They grow at a very low speed.
B.Their homes are being destroyed.
C.They are killed by people for food.
D.Their food is becoming less and less.

In summer the extreme heat often makes people sweaty and restless. While people are annoyed by it, experts suggest summer is the best season to discharge (排放) your body's toxins (毒素) and recover your energy.
One popular option is hot-stone massage (按摩).Therapists use smooth and heated stones, usually river rocks, to massage certain parts of the body, or place them on key points of the body. The warmth of the hot stones will improve blood circulation and also help relax muscles, while sweating is also believed to be good for discharging the body's toxins.
Another popular option is hot-stone baths. The hot-stone bath will help the body discharge toxins and humidity that accumulated during the last winter.Summer is the best season to build a good body.Rather than use water or steam to heat and wash the body, people simply wear a coat or something comfortable, and then lie on heated stone tablets made of hot stones, which are warmed to around 45℃.The body will gradually warm up and blood circulation will also be improved.More sweat will come out quickly. The sweat is smooth and fresh, not smelly like that released after sports activities.Such baths bring a number of health benefits, such as anti-aging, improved blood circulation and stress relief. The slimming effect of dieting can even be promoted.
Using hot stones for healing dates back to ancient times, but the modern renewal of hot-stone massage is generally credited to Mary Nelson, a native of Tucson, Arizona, America, whose trademark is “LaStone Therapy”.
The therapy is gaining wide popularity with many people, especially those who have jobs in cool air-conditioned rooms. The hot-stone therapy can help cure many diseases, including back pain.

A.Sports have greater effects on the health than hot-stone massage.
B.There are no toxins and humidity in the body in summer.
C.Using water of about 45 ℃ to wash the body is good for the health.
D.People should take advantage of summer to improve their health.
10.What can be learned about the hot-stone therapy?
A.It was invented by Mary Nelson, an American.

Regardless of how far we'd like to believe gender(性别)equality in the workplace has come, there's still a yawning gap between male and female leaders in the professional world.A 2018 statistic shows that women nowadays hold just 5.8 percent of CEOs positions at S&P 500 companies, according to Catalyst.
While it's not a huge shock that women are somewhat underrepresented in leadership positions, what is surprising though, is the fact that females may actually be better suited to lead in almost every area, at least according to new findings from the BI Norwegian Business School.
In their research, Professor Oyvind L.Martinsen and Professor Lars Glas surveyed (调查) 2,900 managers with a special focus on personality types. The results were clear: Women scored higher than men in four of the five major leadership-centric categories.
While some people believe that men inherently make better leaders—probably because they picture a leader with a commanding voice, which is more typical of men than women—this piece of research suggests that women are better at methodical management and goal-setting, openness, sociability and supportiveness, as well as ability to communicate clearly.
There was one area in which men scored higher than women, though, and that was on emotional stability and ability to face job-related pressure and stress. The results suggest that women are more sensitive to the effects of high-pressure or highly emotional situations.
Obviously, it's important to consider individual (个人的) differences.Anyone, regardless of gender, may be an inspiring leader and a competent boss. But next time you're hiring for a management position, you just might want to give the resumes (简历) from female candidates a harder look.
5.What makes us shocked much at leadership positions?
A.Women are worse than men.
B.Men take almost all high positions.
C.There is a huge gap between genders.
D.Women might behave better in nearly every field.
6.Which of the following can best replace the underlined word “inherently” in Paragraph 4?
A.properly. B.potentially.

That little “a” with a circle around it that is found in e-mail addresses is most commonly referred to as the “at” symbol. Surprisingly though, there is no official, universal name for this sign. There are lots of strange terms to describe the @ symbol.
Before it became the fixed symbol for e-mail, the symbol was mostly used to represent the cost or weight of something. For instance, if you bought 6 apples, you might write it as 6 apples @ $1.11 each.
With the introduction of e-mail came the popularity of the @ symbol. The @ symbol separates a person's online user name from his mail server address, for instance joe@uselessknowledge.com. Its widespread use on the Internet made it necessary to put this symbol on keyboards in countries that had never seen or used the symbol before. As a result, there is really no official name for this symbol.
The actual origin of the @ symbol remains unknown. History tells us that the @ symbol came from the tired hands of the monks(僧侣) in the Middle Ages. During the Middle Ages when there were no printing presses, every letter of a word had to be copied by hand for each copy of a published book. The monks that performed these long and boring copying duties looked for ways to reduce the number of strokes(笔画) per word for common words.
Although the word “at” is quite short, it was such a common word in texts and documents that monks in the Middle Ages thought it would be good idea to shorten the word “at” even more. As a result, the monks left out the “t” and created a circle-getting rid of two strokes.
9.Before becoming a symbol for e-mail, the @ symbol was most commonly used__________.
A.when people referred to the cost or weight of something
B. to represent the word “at” in computer languages
C. to represent the word “at” on keyboards
D. when people wrote business documents
10.Why did the @ symbol become popular?
A. Because it looked interesting.
B. Because e-mail appeared.
C. Because it was used by monks.
D. Because it was officially used in texts.
11.We can know from the passage that in the Middle Ages__________.
A.monks were hard-working
B.the printing press was invented
C.the @ symbol was seldom seen in texts
D.the work of copying books needed to be done all by hand
12.Monks in the Middle Ages replaced the word “at” with the @ symbol mainly to__________.
A.make the word look better
B.save their effort and time
C.keep some information secret
D.make it easier to understand
根据第二段中的“Before it became the fixed symbol for e-mail, the symbol was mostly used to represent the cost or weight of something.”
根据第三段中的“With the introduction of e-mail came the popularity of the @ symbol.”
根据第四段中的“During the Middle Ages when there were no printing presses, every letter of a word had to be copied by hand for each copy of a published book.”
根据第四段中的“History tells us that the @ symbol came from the tired hands of the monks(僧侣) in the Middle Ages.”

3.C 根据语境,他同时帮助这些需要帮助的病人(patients),这从上文中的“from families of very sick people”可得到暗示。
5.A 根据下文中的“they're__6__out of money,out of time,and out of faith”可知,他们没有钱,没有时间,没有信念,这就是他们人生中最令人恐惧的时期,故选frightening。
6.D 根据语境和空后的out of可知,应选running。run out of表示“用完,耗尽”。
10.A 根据下文中的“After they sold it,they received a large sum of money”可知,他们把救护公司卖掉之后,获得了一大笔钱,由此可知他们的公司很成功。故选successful。
11.B 根据上文中的“who sometimes pilots some trips himself”可知,此处说的是开飞机的执照(permit)。
15.B 根据上文中的“Larry's crew on the ground”和空后的“to and from the airport”可知,他们在地面上工作,往返于机场,因此这里说的是地面人员来回接送病人,因此选B,意思是“驾车送”。
20.A 根据上文中的“We help replace the fear with dramatic(激动人心的)healing”可知,这里说的是担忧,病人不愿意跟家人谈论自己对病情的担忧。因此选A。
Ⅲ.七选五
All animals are part of the food chain: they are listed on someone else's menu and always run the risk of ending up as someone else's lunch, dinner or snack.__1__
Many animals have adapted to their environment in such a way that they can hide better.Having the right colour can make a big difference.__2__Some can change colour very quickly, even in a few seconds, making it more difficult for other animals to find them.__3__Some insects look just like a small stick and can easily hide in a tree or bush.
If it is too late to hide or run away, an animal must use other methods to survive an attack. One type of snake that lives in Texas has developed an interesting way to defend itself. If it is attacked, it first makes itself look bigger and pretends to be a dangerous snake. If that doesn't work, the snake uses another trick: it rolls over, opens its mouth and acts as if it were dead. The snake is such a good actor that it seems quite dead.__4__However, if you roll it back on its stomach, it will roll over on its back again in order to look dead.
__5__Many animals stay together in large groups and use sounds and body language to warn each other if they see or hear something suspicious. Some animals even work together with other species to stay safe. The birds you often see on the back of a water buffalo have an important job: they help warn the buffalo of danger.

B.Like human beings, animals often try to hide or run away when they are being attacked.
C.Other animals and insects have a body shape that helps them hide.

E.The best way to stay safe is to develop a way to receive an early warning when danger comes.
F.Many animals have the same or similar colour as their environment.
G.If someone picks it up, it hangs like a rope and doesn't move.
“Many animals have the same or similar colour as their environment”是通过举例子解释前一句,因此综合分析我们可知F正确。
“Some insects look just like a small stick and can easily hide in a tree or bush.”
从该段的结构分析“However, if you roll it back on its stomach, it will roll over on its back again in order to look dead.”,“However”暗示上文与之不同的情况,因此可知G正确。
由下文中的“to warn each other” “they help warn the buffalo of danger”可知E正确。
