A
In my very first job with some archaeologists, I wasn't digging objects out of the ground, instead I was employed as an artist, drawing what they found. However, I was soon more interested in the stories behind the objects than in drawing them and that's how my career in archaeology started. I still draw what I find in my work as a specialist on the Silk Road, the old trade route running from Egypt to Mongolia, and I also work on some underwater projects too.
In archaeology, my all-time hero is an American called Raphael Pumpelly. I first heard about him when I was a student on a trip to Turkmenistan, a country right in the heart of Asia. To get around the country, I had to learn Russian so that I could speak to the local people. When I got there I thought, “Wow! I'm one of the first Americans here!” Then an old man told me about an American archaeologist, Raphael Pumpelly, who was there doing the same thing over 100 years ago.
Archaeology's in my family. My wife's in the same profession, and, although our two boys aren't interested in the future in archaeology themselves, we've been on some great digs together and they love what we do because they get to travel with us. Last summer, we took them to Lake Titicaca in South America, in the high areas of the Andes mountain range. My best experience was when I was digging on the Egyptian Red Sea coast. There's very little rain and it's so dry that everything is kept as it was. In an old house, where the owner used to store goods from the ships that came in, I picked up a 700-year-old mat in front of the house and there, under it, after all that time, was the house key with the owner's name carved on it. It felt like he could be on his way home any minute! And I thought, “Hey, I do just that. This man's not much different to me!”
1.While working in Egypt, what did the writer find so interesting?
A.That people from different centuries can be so similar.
B.The fact that the doormat was in such good condition.
C.The way the people managed to live in such a dry place.
D.That there had been so much trade in that area.
2.Which entry will the writer probably make in his diary?
A.Turkmenistan is interesting. I'm the first American to come here but I'm glad this is my last trip away.
B.I have been diving today and found some objects for an exhibition. I've just finished drawing them for my records.
C.I wish my children weren't more interested in archaeology and would not work hard in the open like their parents.
D.It's nearly dark but Raphael's still busy digging in that old house. He can be very annoying. He thinks he's the most important person here.
3.What is the writer's main purpose in writing the text?
A.To describe the life of an archaeologist he admires.
B.To persuade people to take up archaeology as a career.
C.To explain what he enjoys about being an archaeologist.
D.To show how archaeologists work.
My best experience was when I was digging on the Egyptian Red Sea coast和It felt like he could be on his way home any minute! And I thought, “Hey, I do just that. This man's not much different to me!” 故选A。
I still draw what I find in my work as a specialist on the Silk Road, the old trade route running from Egypt to Mongolia, and I also work on some underwater projects too. I have been diving today and found some objects for an exhibition. I've just finished drawing them for my records.
I was soon more interested in the stories behind the objects than in drawing them. My best experience was when I was digging on the Egyptian Red Sea coast.

When I was in middle school I used to get teased (戏弄) a lot about my face because I had really bad acne(痤疮). And when I got to high school, the teasing continued.
There was a guy at my school named Adrian who teased me every chance he got. One day after school Adrian followed me home and started teasing me again. As soon as I got home I started crying. My mom came home and asked me what happened, and I told her. She told me that I needed to do something about the teasing.
I decided to file a formal complaint against Adrian at my school. He got sent to the teacher's office and was forced to apologize to me. The teacher wanted to suspend(停课) Adrian for the rest of the school year. I told the teacher that suspending Adrian wasn't necessary. I just wanted him to leave me alone and stop teasing me.
Even though Adrian did finally leave me alone, it didn't change the fact that he had really hurt me. Because of the things he said, I felt Adrian had taken away all my self-respect and my pride. Whenever a guy gave me a compliment(赞美), I wasn't sure if he really meant it or if he was just saying it as a joke.
As I got older, I have learned that whenever a person teases another person, it's because they don't like themselves so they are trying to feel better by bringing someone else down. What they don't realize is that they are hurting themselves more than they are hurting another person's feelings. I have learned that I can't please everyone and I have to please myself.
I have forgiven Adrian for what he did to me in high school. I finally realize that I am a beautiful woman inside and out. Always love yourself, just be who you are, and never let anyone take your self-respect away from you.

A.what Adrian did had great effect on her

D.she was not good at telling right from wrong at that time
4.In the author's opinion, those who tease others so as to make themselves feel better should __________.

C.improve their self-esteem
D.learn to like themselves
根据第一段中的“When I was in middle school I used to get teased(戏弄) a lot about my face because I had really bad acne(痤疮).”
根据第二段末尾的“She told me that I needed to do something about the teasing.”
根据倒数第三段中的“whenever a person teases another person, it's because they don't like themselves so they are trying to feel better by bringing someone else down”可知,作者认为那些为了让自己感觉更好而取笑他人的人应当学会爱自己。

I first met Paul Newman in 1968, when George Roy Hill, the director of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, introduced us in New York City. When the studio didn't want me for the film-it wanted somebody as well known as Paul-he stood up for me. I don't know how many people would have done that; they would have listened to their agents or the studio powers.
The friendship that grew out of the experience of making that film and The Sting four years later had its root in the fact that although there was an age difference, we both came from a tradition of theater and live TV. We were respectful of craft (技艺) and focused on digging into the characters we were going to play. Both of us had the qualities and virtues that are typical of American actors: humorous, aggressive, and making fun of each other-but always with an underlying affection. Those were also at the core (核心) of our relationship off the screen.
We shared the belief that if you're fortunate enough to have success, you should put something back-he with his Newaman's Own food and his Hole in the Wall camps for kids who are seriously ill, and me with Sundance and the institute and the festival. Paul and I didn't see each other all that regularly, but sharing that brought us together. We supported each other financially and by showing up at events.
I last saw him a few months ago. He'd been in and out of the hospital. He and I both knew what the deal was, and we didn't talk about it. Ours was a relationship that didn't need a lot of words.
5.Why was the studio unwilling to give the role to the author at first?
A.Paul Newman wanted it.
B.The studio powers didn't like his agent.
C.He wasn't famous enough.
D.The director recommended someone else.
6.Why did Paul and the author have a lasting friendship?
A.They were of the same age.
B.They worked in the same theater.
C.They were both good actors.
D.They had similar characteristics.
7.What does the underlined word “that” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A.Their belief.
B.Their care for children.
C.Their success.
D.Their support for each other.
8.What is the author's purpose in writing the text?
A.To show his love of films.
B.To remember a friend.
C.To introduce a new movie.
D.To share his acting experience.
根据第一段中的“When the studio didn't want me for the film-it wanted somebody as well known as Paul-he stood up for me”可知,摄影棚起初不愿意给作者角色的原因是想找一个与Paul一样著名的人物。
根据文章第二段中的“We were respectful of craft(技艺) and focused on digging into the characters we were going to play. Both of us had the qualities and virtues that are typical of American actors”可知,作者与Paul之所以拥有持久的友谊是因为他们有相似的性格特征。
根据第三段中的“We shared the belief that if you're fortunate enough to have success, you should put something back”可知,下文的内容是对the belief的解释,that引导同位语从句,解释说明the belief的具体内容。 故选A项。
根据全文内容,尤其是第一段中的“I first met Paul Newman in 1968”以及最后一段中的“I last saw him a few months ago”可知,该篇文章的写作目的是回忆一位朋友,所以选B项。

4.Sorry,I am too busy now. If I__________(have) time,I would certainly go for an outing with you.
5.Jack is a great talker. It's high time that he__________(do) something instead of just talking.
1.were to live/should live/lived 根据wouldn't be able to see...
3.should/could/would/might have visited
It is high time that sb. did sth. 或It is high time that sb. should do sth.
When something goes wrong,it can be very satisfying to say, “Well, it's so-and-so's fault.” or “I know I'm late, but it's not my fault; the car broke down.” It is probably not your fault, but once you form the habit of blaming somebody or something else for a bad situation, you are a loser. You have no power and could do nothing that helps change the situation. However, you can have great power over what happens to you if you stop focusing on whom to blame and start focusing on how to remedy the situation. This is the winner's key to success.
Winners are great at overcoming problems. For example, if you were late because your car broke down, maybe you need to have your car examined more regularly. Or, you might start to carry along with you the useful phone numbers, so you could call for help when in need. For another example, if your colleague causes you problems on the job for lack of responsibility or ability, find ways of dealing with his irresponsibility or inability rather than simply blame the person. Ask to work with a different person, or don't rely on the person. You should accept that the person is not reliable and find creative ways to work successfully regardless of how your colleague fails to do his job well.
This is what being a winner is all about—creatively using your skills and talents so that you are successful no matter what happens. Winners don't have fewer problems in their lives; they have just as many difficult situations to face as anybody else. They are just better at seeing those problems as challenges and opportunities to develop their own talents. So, stop focusing on “whose fault it is”. Once you are confident about your power over bad situations, problems are just stepping stop on for success.
1.According to the passage, winners__________.
A.deal with problems rather than blame others
B.meet with fewer difficulties in their lives
C.have responsible and able colleagues
D.blame themselves rather that others
2.The underlined word “remedy” in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to__________.
A.avoid B.accept
C.improve D.consider
3.When your colleague brings about a problem, you should__________.
A.find a better way to handle the problem
B.blame him for his lack of responsibility
C.tell him to find the cause of the problem
D.ask a more able colleague for help
4.When problems occur, winners take them as________.
A.excuses for their failures

C.challenges to their colleagues
D. chances for self-development

A
In the United States alone, over 100 million cell-phones are thrown away each year. Cell-phones are part of a growing mountain of electronic waste like computers and personal digital assistants. The electronic waste stream is increasing three times faster than traditional garbage as a whole.
Electronic devices contain valuable metals such as gold and silver. A Swiss study reported that while the weight of electronic goods represented by precious metals was relatively small in comparison to total waste, the concentration (含量) of gold and other precious metals was higher in so-called e-waste than in naturally occurring minerals.
Electronic wastes also contain many poisonous metals. Even when the machines are recycled and the harmful metals removed, the recycling process often is carried out in poor countries, in practically uncontrolled ways which allow many poisonous substances to escape into the environment.
Creating products out of raw materials creates much more waste material, up to 100 times more than the material contained in the finished products. Consider again the cell-phone, and imagine the mines that produced those metals, the factories needed to make the box and packaging (包装) it came in. Many wastes produced in the producing process are harmful as well.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency notes that most waste is dangerous in that“the production, distribution, and use of products—as well as management of the resulting waste—all result in greenhouse gas release.” Individuals can reduce their contribution by creating less waste at the start—for instance, buying reusable products and recycling.
In many countries the concept of extended producer responsibility is being considered or has been put in place as an incentive (动机) for reducing waste. If producers are required to take back packaging they use to sell their products, would they reduce the packaging in the first place?
Governments' incentive to require producers to take responsibility for the packaging they produce is usually based on money. Why, they ask, should cities or towns be responsible for paying to deal with the bubble wrap (气泡垫) that encased your television?
From the government's point of view, a primary goal of laws requiring extended producer responsibility is to transfer both the costs and the physical responsibility of waste management from the government and tax-payers back to the producers.
1.By mentioning the Swiss study, the author intends to tell us that ________.
A.the weight of e-goods is rather small
B.e-waste deserves to be made good use of
C.natural minerals contain more precious metals
D.the percentage of precious metals is heavy in e-waste
2.The responsibility of e-waste treatment should be extended ________.
A.from producers to government
B.from government to producers
C.from individuals to distributors
D.from distributors to government
3.What does the passage mainly talk about?
A.The increase in e-waste.
B.The creation of e-waste.
C.The seriousness of e-waste.
D.The management of e-waste.
根据the Swiss study定位到第二段,根据段落大意“Electronic devices contain valuable metals...the concentration (含量) of gold and other precious metals was higher in so-called e-waste than in naturally occurring minerals.”
根据最后一段中的“a primary goal of laws requiring extended producer responsibility is to transfer both the costs and the physical responsibility of waste management from the government and tax-payers back to the producers.”可知responsibility of waste management from the government and tax-payers back to the producers.
B
People typically wash their hands seven times a day in the United States, but they do it at a far higher temperature than is necessary to kill germs, a new study says. The energy waste is equivalent to the fuel use of a small country.
Amanda R. Carrico, a research assistant professor at the Vanderbilt Institute for Energy and Environment in Tennessee, told National Geographic that hand washing is often “a case where people act in ways that they think are in their best interest, but they in fact have inaccurate beliefs or outdated perceptions.”
Carrico said, “It's certainly true that heat kills bacteria, but if you were going to use hot water to kill them it would have to be a way too hot for you to tolerate.”
Carrico said that after a review of the scientific literature, her team found “no evidence that using hot water that a person could stand would have any benefit in killing bacteria.” Even water as cold as 40°F (4.4°C) appeared to reduce bacteria as well as hotter water, if hands were scrubbed, rinsed(冲洗)and dried properly.
Using hot water to wash hands is therefore unnecessary, as well as wasteful, Carrico said, particularly when it comes to the environment. According to her research, people use warm or hot water 64 percent of the time when they wash their hands. Using that number, Carrico's team calculated a significant impact on the planet.
“Although the choice of water temperature during a single hand wash may appear unimportant, when multiplied by the nearly 800 billion hand washes performed by Americans each year, this practice results in more than 6 million metric tons of CO2 equivalent emissions annually,” she said.
The researchers published their results in the July 2013 issue of International Journal of Consumer Studies. They recommended washing with water that is at a “comfortable” temperature, which they noted may be warmer in cold months and cooler in hot ones.
4.What's the meaning of what Carrico told National Geographic in the second paragraph?
A.People are more concerned about their health and begin to wash their hands.
B.It's important for people to wash their hands to keep healthy.
C.Generally, people's hand washing behaviors and perceptions are not correct.
D.People like washing their hands very much.
5.The figures in the sixth paragraph are used to show that ________.
A.using hot water to wash hands has a bad influence on our planet
B.air pollution has become more and more serious
C.using hot water to wash hands is a waste of energy
D.people should pay more attention to the environment around us
6.This passage is organized in the pattern of ________.
A.fact and opinion
B.cause and effect
C.definition and classification
D.time and events
7.What can we learn from the passage?
A.It's necessary and useful for people to wash their hands frequently every day.
B.We can wash our hands with water that is at a “comfortable” temperature.
C.Using cold water to wash hands is necessary and much healthier.
D.Hot water can't kill germs.
根据文章第二段中的 “but they in fact have inaccurate beliefs or outdated perceptions”的转折可知,一般来讲,人们洗手的观念和行为都是不太正确的,故选C。
根据文章第五段最后一句 “Using that number, Carrico's team calculated a significant impact on the planet”的过渡可知,本句承上启下,第六段引用的那些数字就是为了证明用热水洗手对地球带来的消极影响,故选A。
根据文章最后一段最后一句 “They recommended washing with water that is at a ‘comfortable' temperature, which they noted may be warmer in cold months and cooler in hot ones.”
