Ⅲ.阅读理解
A serious earthquake can be a terrible experience, and it is easy to forget safety measures in chaos(混乱).Fortunately, most earthquake safety measures are common sense, but if you forget everything else, remember the following directions:drop, cover, and hold on.Also, most of the earthquake deaths happen after the earthquake, so remember that the danger does not end when the shaking does!
If you stay indoors during an earthquake, move away from unsupported(没有支撑的)areas and windows.Try to get under a doorway or another area of the building which is held up by strong beams.Shelter under a table or desk only if it is very strong, because otherwise it may fall down on you.Do not rush to exits or elevators, because it is far safer to stay where you are.Protect your head by wrapping your arms around it and curling into a ball, and wait for the shaking to stop.
If you stay outdoors during an earthquake, move to an area which is as open as possible.Avoid buildings, electric poles, and other objects which may fall during an earthquake and injure you.Protect your head and stay low to the ground until the shaking ends and it is safe to move.
After an earthquake, many buildings are less strong, although they appear safe.If you stay indoors, move people from the building quickly and help disabled or injured people.Once outdoors, move away from the building so that if it falls down, you will not be injured.Wait until public safety officials announce that it is safe to stay indoors.
By planning ahead and remaining calm during an earthquake, you can greatly increase your chances of survival without injury.

If you live in an earthquake-prone area, it's wise to prepare your family well in advance for the next “Big One”.It's always important to make sure to prepare for earthquakes.Earthquakes are more common than some people realize, and though they rarely end up causing damage, it's important to have your family prepared for an earthquake hit.
Put together an emergency kit that includes food and water to last a week, a fire extinguisher, portable radio, batteries, flashlight, and first-aid supplies.
Note all safe spots in each room, such as doorways or under sturdy tables and desks.Know the dangerous spots, such as fireplaces, windows, mirrors and hanging objects.Point out safety exits and keep those areas clear.
Make sure your family knows where emergency supplies are located.Check to be sure that everyone knows where and how to turn off electrical, gas, and water main valve and switches.Make sure that all family members know how to turn off the gas, water, and electricity in case there is damage after the earthquake that needs to be taken care of.It may prove useful to take your digital camera and make a “How to Guide”, customized to your home, for these things which can be stored in the kit.
Establish how and where your family will reunite if separated during the quake.Arrange a place for the family to meet, if you cannot return to your home after the earthquake. If you have a relative outside of your area, arrange ahead of time to use his/her phone number as a contact point.Remember that phone lines will be needed for emergencies, so delay getting on the phone immediately after the earthquake.
Conduct earthquake drills with your family every six months.
Warnings and tips:
Warm clothing and extra sleeping bags come in handy.Games, toys, and books help keep young ones comforted and entertained.Keep what you can pack with your emergency kit.
Turning on light switches or lighting candles can start leaking gas—choose flashlights instead.

After an earthquake most survivors can be expected to recover over time, particularly with the support of family and friends. Some families will be able to return to their normal life quickly, while others will have to contend_with the destruction of their homes, medical problems, and injury to family members.Children especially will need time to recover from the loss of a loved one or a pet or from the closing down of their school.
Children often turn to adults for information, comfort and help.Parents should try to remain calm, answer children's questions honestly and remain understanding when they see changes in their children's behavior.
Children react differently to an earthquake depending on their ages, developmental levels and former experiences. Some will respond by withdrawing (不与人交往),while others will have angry outbursts (爆发).Parents should remain sensitive to each child's reactions.Parents should spend time talking to their children, letting them know that it's OK to ask questions and to share their worries.Although it may be hard to find time to have these talks, parents can use regular family mealtimes or bedtimes for them. They should answer questions briefly and honestly and be sure to ask their children for their opinions and ideas.Issues may come up more than once and parents should remain patient when you answer the questions again. For young children, parents, after talking about the earth-quake,might read a favorite story or have a relaxing family activity to help them calm down.Parents should also tell children they are safe and spend extra time with them. They could play games outside or read together indoors. Most importantly, be sure to tell them you love them.

If you look through the door of that big room, you'll see those children reading and drawing there. ?Four of the older boys are now on their way to the Car Room to have their driving lessons. Several children are taking turns in the kitchen to help Miss Cabe with lunch. They all enjoy doing this. After lunch it's someone else's job to do the washing-up. This job is unpopular. An earthquake is one of the most common natural disasters. It may cause great damage. So it is wise to learn some simple safety tips to protect yourself or your family members.
Fragile items, like those made of glass should usually be placed on a lower surface, near the ground instead of placing them on cupboards higher up.Never place them near your bed, sofas and other furniture where you would be sitting or lying down. When there is a strong movement, these pieces will fall on the floor directly and not on you.
There is a strong chance of short circuits(短路)and fire breakouts during an earthquake.Make sure you turn off electrical connections and gas immediately when an earthquake happens.
During an earthquake, lie beneath an object that is not easily damaged.Do not go near objects that could directly fall on you.Never use the elevator to go down.Stay inside until the shaking stops and it is safe to go outside.Research has shown that most injures happen when people inside buildings try to go out.Use the staircases at all times.
If you are outdoors, do not take shelter under a tree, streetlights, electric poles or tall buildings. If you are driving, stop your car and stay in a safe place.Do not park your car under a tree or any tall object.
If trapped in debris(瓦砾堆), cover your mouth with a handkerchief or clothing.Tap on a pipe or wall so rescuers can find you.Use a whistle(哨子)if it is available.Never shout for help.Shouting can cause you to breathe in dangerous amounts of dust.Do not light a match because you may burn yourself.Do not move about or kick up dust.

Having lived in California until 1970,my family has felt a number of earthquakes. We have been fortunate, however,to have suffered no bodily harm or property damage.
There is a website that lists all California earthquakes recorded from 1769 to the present. The site lists the dates and times as well as the magnitude (震级) and the exact location of any quake that measured more than 6.0.There are only a few quakes that stand out in my memory and, luckily, none is shown in the website. So, my personal experience with earthquakes might be considered insignificant.
There are three earthquakes that are difficult to forget. The first one was in 1955 and our oldest daughter was walking with me in our backyard in Redwood City in California. As the shaking became stronger I held her to me with one arm as I held on to one of our fruit trees with the other. All three of us(my daughter, I and the tree) shook for two or three minutes that to us felt like hours.
The second one was in 1963.Our entire family was visiting Disneyland in Southern California. The earth started to shake just as we were beginning to walk from our hotel toward the_famous_landmark.
My third experience with an earthquake was a lonely one in California. It was in my sixties and I was alone in an old church. As the building started to shake, I quickly headed for the door to go outside.I remember I said a little prayer—something like,“Help me get out of here in time,Dear Heavenly Father”.Minutes later, I was safe outside.

Many years ago, when I was fresh out of school and working in Denver, I was driving to my parents' home in Missouri for Christmas.I stopped at a gas station about 50 miles from Oklahoma City, where I was planning to visit a friend. While I was standing in line at the cash register (收款机), I said hello to an old couple who were also paying for gas.
I took off, but had gone only a few miles when black smoke began pouring from the back of my car.I stopped and wondered what I should do.A car pulled up behind me.It was the couple I had spoken to at the gas station. They said they would take me to my friend's.We chatted on the way into the city, and when I got out of the car, the husband gave me his business card.
I wrote him and his wife a thank-you note for helping me.Soon afterwards, I received a Christmas present from them.Their note that came with it said that helping me had made their holidays meaningful.
Years later, I drove to a meeting in a nearby town in the morning. In the late afternoon I returned to my car and found that I'd left the lights on all day, and the battery was dead. Then I noticed that the Friendly Ford dealership—a shop selling cars—was right next door.I walked over and found two salesmen in the showroom.
“Just how friendly is Friendly Ford?” I asked and explained my trouble. They quickly drove a pickup truck to my car and started it.They would accept no payment. When I got home, I wrote them a note to say thanks.I received a letter back from one of the salesmen. No one had ever taken the time to write him and say “thank you”, and it meant a lot, he said.
“Thank you”—two powerful words. They're easy to say and mean so much.

Parties and social gatherings no longer excite us the same way they once did. This is not due to a lack of desire to socialize, but the smartphone.
At parties, more people are on their smartphones than on their drinks.According to a recent International Data Corporation study, well over half of all Americans have a smartphone and reach for it the moment they wake up,keeping it in hand all day.In addition, too many people in society are using smartphones while driving and as a result, they get into car crashes.34 percent of teenagers admit to texting while driving, and they confirm that text messaging is their number one driving interruption.People's attachment to their smartphones is unbelievably becoming more important than the lives of themselves and others.
Just as drivers dismiss the importance of focusing while on the road, many people also fail to recognize the significance of human interaction. When with their friends, some people pointlessly check or send text messages in the presence of a friend, which sends a message to that friend:the person I am texting is more important than you.In addition, relying on our smartphones to make friends does not give us the same advantage as being able to make new friendships in the real world.Face-to-face conversations will give us much stronger communication skills in the long run.
As many people risk their lives and the lives of people around them just to send a text or mindlessly check their messages, smartphones are in many ways more dangerous to people. The quality of this technology is hindering societal achievements and weakening the value of communication. Not only is the smartphone affecting our desire to interact (交流) face to face, but it is also lowering society's ability to communicate.
【解题导语】 这是一篇议论文。本文讲述了人们在参加聚会、开车的时候,也在用手机发短信,这极大地影响了人与人之间的交流,甚至导致事故的发生。
32.The purpose of this text is to ________.

B.appeal to us to pay attention to communication skills
C.express a concern about the overuse of the smartphone
D.advise us to be cautious about the addiction to the smartphone
解析:选C 写作意图题。全文通过描述人们在社交或开车的时候埋头玩智能手机的现象,指出了这一现象背后值得思考的话题:智能手机的过度使用已影响到了人们的日常生活和交流。作者对此表示担忧,因此选C。
33.The second paragraph is developed by ________.
A.giving examples
B.listing figures
C.comparing facts
D.analyzing the effects
解析:选A 写作手法题。第二段讲述了人们使用智能手机的情况,比如聚会上、开车时,并提到了开车时使用手机发短信的青少年的比重,因此该段是通过举例子来阐述其观点的。
34.The author advocates us to make new friends ________.
A.by using smartphones
B.in a face-to-face way
C.in different ways
D.under a free circumstance
解析:选B 细节理解题。根据第三段的最后两句话可知,作者提倡面对面交朋友,而不是通过手机,因此选B。
35.Over-dependence on the smartphone leads to the fact that ________.
A.parties and gatherings limit their social circle
B.people are more and more narrow-minded
C.people's communication skills are weakened
D.face-to-face communication becomes less important
解析:选C 细节理解题。由最后一段中的“The quality of this technology...the value of communication.”可知,对手机过于依赖会削弱交流的价值,因此选C。

How to Live a Happy Life?
Happiness is what we need most with the increase of pressure in modern life. __36__ Fortunately, this is not the case. Everyone has the ability to hang on to happiness with his own efforts. The following methods may lead you to long-lasting happiness.
?Take exercise. Other than health benefits that are too numerous to mention, exercise makes you smarter, happier, improves sleep, and makes you feel better about your body. __37__ Keeping in touch with nature can help you reduce stress, make you more creative, improve your memory and may even make you a better person.
? __38__ Relationships are worth more than you think. Not feeling socially connected can make you stupider and kill you. Loneliness can lead to heart attack, stroke and diabetes. On the other hand, studies have shown that the longest-lived people on the planet all place a strong emphasis on social engagement.
?Challenge yourself. __39__ Music lessons increase intelligence. Challenging your beliefs strengthens your mind. Increasing willpower just takes a little effort each day and it's more responsible for your success than IQ. Not getting an education or taking advantage of opportunities are two of the things people look back on their lives and regret the most.
?Laugh. Laughter has similar effects to physical exercise. It increases blood pressure, the heart rate and the rate of breathing; it also works several groups of muscles in the face, the stomach, and the feet. It can even reduce the effect of pain on the body. Humor is a good way to cause laughter. __40__
A.Spend time with friends and family.
B.Do something kind for the people you care about.
C.However, sometimes it seems far away from us.
D.Learning another language can keep your mind sharp.
E.Life is always full of hope.
F.It would be better if you take exercise in nature.

39.解析:选E 由下文“Music lessons increase intelligence. Challenging your beliefs strengthens your mind. Increasing willpower just takes a little effort each day and it's more responsible for your success than IQ.”可知,音乐课程提高智力。挑战你的信念可以增强你的头脑。增强意志力只需要每天努力一点点,它比智商对你的成功更重要。所有这些都是生活充满希望的具体体现。故选E。
40.解析:选G 由空前“Humor is a good way to cause laughter.”可知,幽默是引起笑声的一种好方式。所以此空与上一句为并列关系,意在说明“想想有趣的时刻或事情也会引起笑声”。故选G。
