Ⅲ .阅读理解
You're in a bit of a dilemma standing in front of the produce section of your local supermarket. In one hand, you're holding a conventionally grown Granny Smith apple. In your other hand, you have one that's been organically grown. Both apples are firm, shiny and green. Both provide vitamins and fiber, and both are free of fat, sodium and cholesterol.
The conventionally grown apple costs less and is a proven family favorite. But the organic apple has a label that says “USDA Organic”. Does that mean it's better? Safer? More nutritious? Several differences between organic and non-organic foods exist. Become a better informed consumer for your next trip to the supermarket. The word “organic” refers to the way farmers grow and process agricultural products, such as fruits, vegetables, grains, dairy products and meat. Organic farming practices are designed to encourage soil and water conservation and reduce pollution. Farmers who grow organic produce and meat don't use conventional methods to fertilize, control weeds or prevent livestock disease.
Here are other differences between conventional farming and organic farming:
Conventional farmers
Organic farmers
Apply chemical fertilizers to promote plant growth.
Apply natural fertilizers to feed soil and plants.
Apply insecticide to reduce pests and disease.
Use beneficial insects and birds to reduce pests and disease.
Give animals antibiotics, growth hormones and medications to prevent disease and promote growth, housing.
Give animals organic foods and allow them access to the outdoors. Use preventive measures—such as a balanced diet and clean housing—to help minimize disease.
*Organic or not?Check the label
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has established an organic certification program that requires all organic foods to meet strict government standards. These standards regulate how such foods are grown, handled and processed. Any farmer or food manufacturer who labels and sells a product as organic must be USDA certified as meeting these standards. Only producers who sell less than $5,000 a year in organic foods are exempt (免除) from this certification.
If a food bears a USDA Organic label, it means it's produced and processed according to the USDA standards. The seal is voluntary, but many organic producers use it.

It was an English speech contest and my mother encouraged me to take a part in it. I tried my best to remember the whole speech “Believe in yourself” and practiced them over 100 time. Ⅲ.阅读理解
A
An average 30-year-old person who has eaten three meals a day since birth has eaten more than 30,000 meals to date. Even if you've only eaten half that much have to admit this:you've let some of that breakfast, lunch or dinner go to waste. And it turns out we're all to blame for this shaming fact:30% of all food produced in the world each year is wasted or lost. That's about 1.3 billion tons, according to a new report by the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization.
That's the weight of more than 8.6 million full-grown blue whales, the largest creatures on earth. That's the weight of more than 2.3 million Airbus A380s, the largest planes in existence. That's as if each person in China, the world's most populous country with more than 1.3 billion people, had one ton mass of food thrown into the dustbin. It's almost unfathomable, isn't it?
Setting aside that big number, we find the people with the most money are the ones who waste the most. On average, a person in European and North American countries wastes between 95 and 115 kilograms of food. Sub-Saharan African, South Asian and Southeast Asian countries waste much, much less—between 6 and 11 kilograms per person.
Here's another statistic:all the food that the world's richest countries waste is about equal to all the food that Sub-Saharan Africa produces. The numbers:222 million tons and 230 million tons, respectively (分别地). Basically, the wasted food of the rich could feed much of the African continent. And these numbers come as we've just been reporting about rising food prices around the world in the past week.
And my own personal tip:if I eat at a restaurant and can't finish it all, I ask for a doggie bag. I used to be a waiter years ago and will never forget the amounts of food I saw left on the table after the bill was paid. There's no reason to waste food. It's up to all of us to use our common sense to eat and shop just a bit more wisely.

How to Make Friends with Neighbors
Most people have neighbors where they live, whether it is in a house, a townhouse, or an apartment. You want to be friends with your neighbors, not enemies. Here are some tips to make that happen.
Get to know your neighbors. If you are the ones moving in and nobody has come to greet you, introduce yourself to your neighbors. 1 If you see someone with a moving truck moving in, introduce yourself and offer to help. Take them a home-treat, such as cookies or bread, and welcome them to the neighborhood.
2 Take a loaf of bread or a plate of cookies or brownies and wish them a Merry Christmas. You can make a little bag of candy to take to them and wish them a Happy Halloween.
Invite your neighbors to dinner or a barbecue. You can get to know them over a delicious meal. Don't ask them to bring anything. 3 You can also invite your neighbor over to your house if you are watching a football, baseball, or other sport you think they might be interested in.
Be considerate to your neighbors. 4 You don't want to be the annoying neighbors who have no consideration for others in the neighborhood. Keep your arguments within the walls of your house. Don't run outside yelling at one another, creating a huge scene. Nobody wants to know about your personal or family problems.
Let your children play together. Don't discourage your children from playing with your neighbor's children because of religion, race, or other petty things. 5
A.Help out with yard work.
B.Wish them Happy Holidays.
C.If they offer, be gracious and accept it.
D.Go up to your neighbor's house and say hello.
E.If you see your neighbor working out in his or her yard, offer a helping hand.
F.Don't play super loud music in the early morning or after nine o'clock at night.

Gwendolyn Brooks was the first African American to win a Pulitzer Prize for Literature. Gwendolyn Brooks wrote hundreds of poems during her lifetime. She had more than 20 books published. She was known around the world for using poetry to increase understanding about black culture in America.
Her poems described conditions among the poor, racial inequality and drug use in the black community. She also wrote poems about the struggles of black women. But her skill was more than her ability to write about struggling black people. She was an expert at the language of poetry. She combined traditional European poetry styles with the African American experience.
In her early poetry, Gwendolyn Brooks wrote about the South Side of Chicago. The South Side of Chicago is where many black people live. In her poems, the South Side is called Bronzeville. It was A Street in Bronzeville that gained the attention of literary experts in 1945. Critics praised her poetic skill and her powerful descriptions about the black experience during the time. The Bronzeville poems were her first published collection.
In 1950, Gwendolyn Brooks became the first African American to win the Pulitzer Prize for Literature. She won the prize for her second book of poems called Annie Allen.Annie Allen is a collection of poetry about the life of a Bronzeville girl as a daughter, a wife and mother. She experiences loneliness, loss, death and being poor. Ms. Brooks said that winning the prize changed her life.
Her next work was a novel written in 1953 called Maud Martha. Maud Martha received little notice when it was first published. But now it is considered an important work by some critics. Its main ideas about the difficult life of many women are popular among female writers today.
In some of her poems, Gwendolyn Brooks described how what people see in life is affected by who they are. One example is this poem, Corners on the Curving Sky.
By the end of the 1960s, Gwendolyn Brooks's poetry expanded from the everyday experiences of people in Bronzeville. She wrote about a wider world and dealt with important political issues.

A.the difficulties Gwendolyn Brooks would meet
B.the poems related to political issues
C.the award Gwendolyn Brooks had gained

B
Everyone seems to be living for someone else.
I had once helped a friend of mine run a watermelon stall. I noticed something interesting when people came to buy watermelons, but nobody paid any attention to it because it seemed to be a common practice:almost every buyer would lift the melon up to their ear, smartly rap it, apparently trying to listen to something. I wondered what they expected to hear. Finally I could no longer hold back my curiosity and made bold to ask a customer—an elderly gentleman—about this. Hearing my question, he roared with laughter. Then he replied in a self-mocking tone,“Young lady, I have been doing this for more than fifty years. But all I know is that everybody would stare at you like you were a fool if you just pick up a melon and leave.”
Not long after that, my watermelon stall friend sent me an invitation to her wedding, which really surprised me. I asked her, “How come you're seized by a sudden whim to get married? I even didn't know you had got a boyfriend.” She answered while counting money, “Everyone has to get married anyway. So, it is better to get married sooner than later.”
Have they forgotten their own heart? It may be safer and save a lot more worries to swim with the tide. The use of WE or US will give one a steady and sure sense of pride. But why do people usually feel uneasy when using “I”?
I find these somewhat funny. We have got used to following others' example. We feel at ease and justified simply because this is a way of US, a way having been practiced by so many people. But this massive practice is still wrong though we all follow suit. And in turn, we also take it for granted that we should judge the right and wrong of others by our own standard.
【解题导语】 作者通过身边人的事例,发现人们在生活中往往“随大流”,盲从别人,没有跟随自己的内心。
5.Why did the elderly gentleman rap the watermelon before buying it?
A.Because he expected to hear something.
B.Because he knew nothing about it.
C.Because he just followed suit.
D.Because he was a fool.
解析:选C 细节理解题。根据第二段最后一句“But all I know is that everybody would stare at you like you were a fool if you just pick up a melon and leave.”可知,老人不知道敲西瓜的确切原因,只是看到别人都在敲,如果自己不敲一下,会被人认为是一个傻子。故选C项。
6.Which of the following can best replace the phrase“swim with the tide” in the fourth paragraph?
A.Follow the crowd.
B.Swim against the tide.
C.Wear other people's clothes.
D.Follow your heart.
解析:选A 词义猜测题。根据第四段第三句“The use of WE or US will give one a steady and sure sense of pride.”可推断出本句中的tide(潮水)指的应该是“WE or US”,而swim with the tide意为“跟随人群,随大流,从众”。故选A项。
7.What will be most likely written about by the author in the next paragraph?
A.Nothing.
B.A story about following your heart.
C.A funny story about how to follow your heart.
D.An example about judging others by your own standard.
解析:选D 推理判断题。根据最后一段末句“... we also take it for granted that we should judge the right and wrong of others by our own standard.”可推断出下文可能会与“用自己的标准评价别人”有关。故选D项。
8.Which is RIGHT according to the passage?
A.The author's attitude to “follow others' example” is positive.
B.The author understood why people rapped a watermelon at last.
C.The author felt unexpected when her watermelon stall friend wanted to get married.
D.The practice of following suit makes people feel at ease and justified only because it is a way of America.
解析:选C 推理判断题。根据第三段第一句“...my watermelon stall friend sent me an invitation to her wedding, which really surprised me.”可知,朋友的婚礼出乎作者的意料。故选C项。

Working well in a team requires full cooperation. It's an important skill for almost every employee to have. Your ability to do your job is dependent upon others getting your work done, and others depend on you to get their work done.
Communicate well. Lack of communication is one of the biggest reasons of a team's failure. Seek input from team members so they feel like a valuable part of the team. Communication establishes trust among team members. In addition, communicating well can help prevent and resolve conflict. Meet regularly to keep members involved and aware of your work progress. Post decisions where everyone in the team can see them.
Be flexible. In teamwork, priorities and responsibility can change instantly. Stay ready to shift focus. Training team members to be able to do parts of other team members' jobs can be a valuable part of teamwork; being flexible helps to build appreciation for all the parts of the team.
Meet deadlines. Work hard to ensure you meet established deadlines when you work in a team environment. Others are depending on your work. Negotiate timelines with your teammates at the start of a project. Doing so allows you to have a say in how work gets accomplished.
Establish accountability. All team members must be responsible for the success and failure of the project. Although not every team needs a leader, teams require a formal way to ensure everyone does his part. Try using meetings to report on progress.
Celebrate accomplishments and encourage the team. Senior executives may not always recognize the importance of some team members' work. Share congratulations at team meetings and talk about whose work is invaluable in helping you get your work done.

Recently I and other Red Cross volunteers met a group of victims from Hurricane Katrina. We were there, as mental health professionals, to offer “psychological first aid” and I was struck by the simple healing power of presence. As we walked in the gate to the shelter, we were greeted with a burst of gratitude (感激) from the first person we met. I felt appreciated, but also guilty, because I hadn't really done anything yet.
I first realized the power of presence many years ago when a friend's mother passed away unexpectedly. I received a call saying she had just passed away. I wanted to rush down there immediately, but didn't want to intrude (打扰) on this very personal period of sadness. I was torn about what to do. Another friend with me then said, “Just go. Just be there.” I did, and I will never regret it.
Since then, I have not hesitated to be in the presence of others. Once I sat at the bedside of a young man suffering from the pain of his AIDS-related dying. He was not awake, and obviously unaware of others' presence. However, the atmosphere was by no means solemn. His family, playing guitars and singing, allowed him to be present with them as though he were still fully alive.
In my life, I am repeatedly struck by the healing power of presence. In it, none of us are truly alone. It is not only something we give to others but also changes me for the better.

解析:选A 细节理解题。根据第二段中的“I wanted to rush down there immediately ...I was torn about what to do.”可知,“我”想要立即去朋友那里,但又不愿意去打扰朋友,据此可知,当朋友的母亲去世时,“我”犹豫是否要去朋友那里。
27.What does the underlined word “solemn” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Heavy but warm.

28.What has the author learned from his experience?
A.A friend in need is a friend indeed.
B.Being present can make a big difference.

Square foot gardening is a type of gardening made popular by Mel Bartholemew. It is based on the idea that the wide rows in traditional gardening are a waste of time, work, water and area.It shows that quality vegetables can be grown in less space with less work.In this method, the garden space is divided into “beds”.Each bed is 4’×4’(16 sq ft) (120cm×120cm, 1.4m2).The beds are separated by paths (小路).These beds are further divided into squares of about one square foot.Common spacing is one plant per square for larger plants such as broccoli, four per square for medium large plants like lettuce, nine per square for medium small plants like spinach, and sixteen per square for small plants such as onions and carrots. The weeds (杂草) are removed from the beds and the plants are watered from the paths. This stops the soil from being compacted (压紧).
Benefits of square foot gardening:
·Much less work.Normal gardening needs heavy tools to loosen the soil.In this method, the soil is never compacted and it remains loose.
·Water savings. The loose ground holds the water better. This type of garden needs water less often than other methods. Also, water is placed very near the plant roots.Less water is wasted.
·Very few weeds. The vegetables form a living mulch (覆盖物) and shade out many weeds before they can start to grow.
·Pesticides (杀虫剂) are not needed.Natural ways to keep pests away work very well in a close space. Many different types of plants in a small area also stop plant diseases from spreading easily.

I used to believe courtesy was a thing of the past. Very seldom have I encountered a courteous human being in this modern era.
Recently, I had to change my thinking, when I came face to face with just such a human being in a coffee place, with my two daughters. The place was crowded as usual and we had to climb steep (陡的) stairs in order to find an empty table. After enjoying coffee and snacks, we went down the narrow stairs, where there was hardly any space for another person to either climb up or come down.
Just as I was in the middle of the stairs, a man entered the main entrance of the restaurant which was right in front of the staircase (楼梯). I was sure I would be pushed roughly by this man going up. I kept coming down as fast as I could. My daughters were already down, looking up at me worriedly, hoping I would reach them before the stranger started walking up the stairs, knowing I was a nervous sort.
Nearly reaching them, I noticed the man still standing near the door. I reached my daughters and passed the stranger at the entrance door which he kept holding open. I looked back, thinking he was still at the door, deciding whether to go in or find another less crowded place. I saw him going up the stairs, two at a time. I told my daughters about it and all three of us felt bad that we did not even thank the courteous gentleman who was actually holding the door open for us ladies to pass through before going up.
Such well mannered people are hard to find these days when pushing is very common in our advanced but aggressive society. We applauded for his chivalry (彬彬有礼).
【解题导语】 在这个忙碌的现代社会,彬彬有礼、体贴他人的品质变得尤为珍贵。作者讲述了自己经历的一件事情,并赞扬了这种良好的品质。

B.He would wait for her.
