Bill Gates and the president of General Motors have met for lunch, and Bill is going on and on about computer technology.“If automotive technology had kept pace with computer technology over the past few decades, you would now be driving a V-32 instead of a V-8, and it would have a top speed of 10,000 miles per hour,” says Gates.“Or, you could have an economy car that weighs 30 pounds and gets a thousand miles to a gallon of gas. In either case, the sticker price of a new car would be less than $50. Why haven't you guys kept up?”
The president of GM smiles and says,“Because the federal government won't let us build cars that crash four times a day.”
Why is that funny (or not funny, as the case may be)? Human beings love to laugh, and the average adult laughs 17 times a day. Humans love to laugh so much that there are actually industries built around laughter. Jokes, sitcoms and comedies are all designed to get us laughing, because laughing feels good. For us it seems so natural, but the funny thing is that humans are one of the only species that laughs. Laughter is actually a complex response that involves many of the same skills used in solving problems.
Laughter is a great thing—that's why we've all heard the saying,“Laughter is the best medicine.” There is strong evidence that laughter can actually improve health and help fight disease. In this article, we'll look at laughter—what it is, what happens in our brains when we laugh, what makes us laugh and how it can make us healthier and happier. You'll also learn that there's a tremendous amount that no one understands yet.

A
Humor is a most effective, yet frequently neglected, means of handling the difficult situations in our lives. It can be used for patching up differences, apologizing, saying“no”, criticizing, and getting the other fellow to do what you want without his losing face. For some jobs, it is the only tool that can succeed. It is a way to discuss subjects so sensitive that a serious dialogue may start a riot. For example, many believe that comedians on television are doing more today for racial and religious tolerance than people in any other forum.
Humor is often the best way to keep a small misunderstanding from escalating (升级) into a big deal. Recently a neighbor of mine had a quarrel with his wife as she drove him to the airport. Airborne, he felt miserable, and he knew she did, too. Two hours after she returned home, she received a long-distance phone call.“Person-to-person for Mrs. I. A. Pologize.” intoned the operator.“That's spelled ‘P’ as in ...” In a twinkling (眨眼间), the whole day changed from bad to lovely at both ends of the wire.
An English hostess with a quick wit was giving a formal dinner for eight distinguished guests whom she hoped to enlist (赞助) in a major charity drive. Austerity was a fashion in England at the time, and she had asked her children to serve the meal. She knew that anything could happen ... and it did, just as her son, with the studied concentration of a tightrope walker, brought in a large roast turkey; he successfully elbowed the swinging dining-room door, but the back bird dropped onto the dining-room floor.
The boy stood rooted, the guests staring at their plates. Moving only her head the hostess looked at her son,“No harm, Daniel”, she said,“just pick him up and take him back to the kitchen” ... she enunciated (发音) clearly so he would think about what she was saying ...“and bring in the other one.”
A wink and a one-liner instantly changed the dinner from a red-faced embarrassment to a laughter.

I can still remember it as if it happened yesterday. I was a college freshman and had stayed up most of the night before laughing and talking with friends. Now just before my first class of the day my eyelids were feeling heavier and heavier and my head was drifting down to my desk to make my textbook a pillow. A few minutes' nap time before class couldn't hurt, I thought.
Boom! I lifted my head immediately and my eyes opened wider than saucers. I looked around with my heart beating quickly trying to find the cause of the noise. My young professor was looking back at me with a mischievous, boyish smile on his face. He had intentionally dropped the pile of textbooks he was carrying onto my desk. “Good morning!” he said, still smiling. “I'm glad to see everyone is awake. Now let's get started.”
For the next hour I wasn't sleepy at all. It wasn't from the shock of my professor's textbook alarm clock either. Instead, it was from the attractive discussion he led. With knowledge and good humor, he made the material come alive. His insights were full of both wisdom and loving kindness. And the enthusiasm and joy which he taught with were contagious I left the classroom not only wide awake, but a little smarter and a little better as well.
I learned something far more important than not sleeping in class that day too. I learned that if you are going to do something in this life, do it well, do it with joy, and make it an expression of your love. What a glorious place this world would be if all of us did our work joyously and well! What a beautiful world we could create if every doctor, teacher, musician, cook, waitress, poet, miner, farmer, and laborer made their work an expression of their love! Don't sleepwalk through your life then. Wake up! Let your love fill your work and your soul. Life is too short not to live it well.

Do You Have a Positive Attitude?
Who would you rather hang around with? Someone who always acts in low spirits? Or someone who manages to see the good around him, even when things aren't always going great? 1
Having a positive attitude can help you in many ways. 2 Your friends will definitely appreciate you more if you see the silver lining rather than just the dark clouds!
3 The less pressure you feel, the better you will feel overall. So if you've been feeling tired, put on a happy face and you just might feel better soon.
But how can you have a positive attitude when life is hard? It's more than just turning life's lemons into lemonade. 4 But it's worth it.
A positive attitude doesn't mean ignoring life's troubles. It just means looking for the good in things, rather than being a pessimist and concentrating on the bad in things. Sometimes your attitude can make all the difference.
Identify (识别) those areas of your life that might not be going so well. 5 Focus on one at a time and think of ways you can find the positive in things.
A.The answer is to have a positive attitude.
B.Having a positive attitude can take some hard work.
C.They are likely to make you have negative thoughts.
D.Having a positive attitude can also reduce your stress level.
E.If you have a positive attitude, you're more fun to be around.
F.When you feel better physically, you naturally feel better mentally.
G.It's no surprise that people enjoy being around positive people rather than negative people.

A culture's values can be mirrored by its humor. Humor has been evaluated by many great minds such as Thomas Hobbes, who disliked humor, “Laughter is nothing else but sudden glory arising from some sudden thought of feeling far better than others.” He thought humor to be a negative quality of human narrow-mindedness.
However, Mordechai Gordon, Ph.D of Education, insists, “Humor allows us to view the world from an angle that is amusing rather than serious.” I agree with Gordon. Learning to look at the world through humor is important.
In the United States, every four years an election occurs. Without humor as a way to express their feelings, how else would Americans keep from clawing their eyes out and going the way of lemming?Television shows like “The Daily Show” have become important parts of American culture. They are mothering the masses by metaphorically (隐喻地) airplane-ing politics into our mouths. They make politics fun.
Of course, politics is only one type of humor. Social humor helps people through the twists and turns of the human condition. American pop culture promotes an unhealthy self-image. On the topic of self-image, Hari Kondabolu stands out. He has a joke about the popular musical group “The Pussycat Dolls”, describing their hit song “Don't Cha” as a negative representation of women. He points out an obvious offence in American culture.
A study from Loyola University of Maryland has shown that humor is one determining factor for selecting a mating partner. Amongst other things, mates look for an outstanding funny bone in a potential partner.
Of course, humor is not always used for good purposes. Humor can be linked to vulgarity (庸俗) and racism, but, like everything else, it has potential to unite human beings by allowing us to laugh at ourselves, our failures and our connection with one another.
Though life may seem tough and depressing at times, all I have to do is look in the mirror at my increased wrinkles (皱纹) to know that there is a comedy out there that even Chaplin wasn't aware of.
With that in mind, remember to laugh with humanity and sometimes at humanity.

Last year Martha had a crazy idea:“Let's go to the shelter and get a dog.” I was not exactly thrilled about the idea but agreed. We went to a California Animal Shelter. We wanted to find a dog and save a life at the same time. While I walked along the rows and rows of cold metal cages, a dog caught my eye. He was scared, weak and looked like he had given up on life.
He looked at me with big beautiful eyes. I could see into his soul that he just wanted it to end. I approached his cage. I stuck my finger through the hole in the cage and scratched him on the head. He closed his eyes and accepted all the love. I knew that this dog had never felt love before. I thought he was enjoying every bit of the love I could give him until his time came to leave the Earth.
Tears began to stream down my face because I felt everything that this poor creature was feeling right then. He just wanted to be loved; he just wanted a home and a family.
I called my wife Martha and son Gabriel over and told them. “We want him.”
Now Carson's favorite thing to do is to leap up in the air onto our bed in the morning and give us kisses with his giant tongue. He is always there to greet us when we come home with a huge smile and a wagging tail.

Text 10
Last Saturday, ?a storm tore through two villages in South Africa, destroying fourteen homes. Seven others were so badly damaged that their owners had to leave them, and fifteen others had broken windows or torn roofs. ?One person was killed, several were badly injured and taken to the hospital, and a number of other people suffered minor injuries. Altogether over two hundred people have become homeless as a result of the storm.
A farmer, Mr.Smith, said that the storm began early in the morning and lasted over an hour. “ ?I was in the kitchen with my wife, and our children were still sleeping,” he said. “When we heard a loud noise, we woke our children up immediately. A few minutes later our house fell down on top of us. We managed to climb out, but then I saw that one of my children was missing. ?I went back inside and found him, safe but frightened.”
Soldiers helped to bring people out of the flooded area, and the government provided food, clothes and houses.

A
We are all fascinated by mysteries. To some extent we love to expect strange phenomenon occurring before us. Here are some amazing unsolved mysteries.
The Georgia Guidestones
On one of the highest hilltops in Elbert County, Georgia stands a giant granite monument Carved in eight different languages on the four giant stones are 10 Guides.
The origin of this strange monument is covered in mystery because no one knows the true identity of the man, or men, who constructed it. All we know is that in June 1979, a man identifying himself as R.C.Christian announced that he would build something to convey a message to mankind, but to date, no one knows who R.C.Christian really was.
Bermuda Triangle
The Bermuda Triangle is a triangular area of the Atlantic Ocean. Many planes, ships, and boats are said to have disappeared in this triangle without a trace, which led to the belief that “supernatural” forces exist in this area of the sea.
Could there truly be an unnatural force at work in this geographical triangle or are these disappearances merely coincidence? Either way, numerous people remain unwilling to step over the boundary line into the Devil's Triangle.
Loch Ness Monster
The Loch Ness Monster is a legendary animal that supposedly lives in the depths of Loch Ness, a long narrow lake located in rural Scotland.
Stories concerning the monster date back to the 6th century AD. Over the years thousands have reported seeing a long neck appearing from the water with a small head of an unknown creature. Pictures have even been taken of this “creature”, but most scientists refuse to believe any creature of this kind lives in the Loch Ness. So far, the evidence is inadequate, and the controversy continues.
21.Why is the Georgia Guidestones mysterious?
A.It is on one of the highest hilltops in Elbert County.
B.There are eight different languages on the stones.
C.The person who built it remains unknown.
D.R. C. Christian could convey a message to mankind.
22.Why are people unwilling to enter the Bermuda Triangle?
A.It is too remote from land.
B.The chance of surviving is slim there.
C.There are supernatural forces in the area.
D.All transportations have disappeared there.
23.What can we know about Loch Ness Monster?
A.It existed in the 6th century AD.
B.It is said to have a long neck and a large head.
C.It has been living in Loch Ness Lake for a long time.
D.People haven't reached an agreement on its existence.
B
Have you seen Jurassic Park? In this film, scientists use DNA kept for tens of millions of years to clone dinosaurs. They find trouble, however, when they realize that the cloned creatures are smarter and more dangerous than expected. That's nothing more than a fiction.
But could we really clone endangered animals?
To date, the most successful attempt to do so was the cloning of a gaur, a rare ox-like animal from southeast Asia. Scientists used a cow to bring the cloned baby gaur, named Noah. Two days after birth, however, Noah died from a common bacterial infection. Other endangered species that may be cloned include the African bongo antelope (羚羊), the Sumatran tiger, the cheetah (猎豹), and the giant panda.
Next, could we really clone extinct animals?
In theory? Yes. To do this, you need a well-kept source of DNA from the extinct animals such as wool mammoth (毛象), Tasmanian tiger, or even dinosaur, and a closely related species, still living, which could serve as a surrogate mother.
In reality? Probably not. On the one hand, it's not likely that extinct animals' DNA could survive undamaged for such a long time. Cloning such extinct animals as wool mammoth, Tasmanian tiger, or dinosaur is much more difficult due to the lack of properly well-preserved DNA. On the other hand, for example, a gaur can have a cow as a surrogate mother, definitely not a monkey. But what about an extinct animal as unique as the panda? What species could possibly serve as a surrogate mother?
Cloning presents many exciting possibilities. However, even if extinct animals were brought back, they could not survive in today's world. Not only do most extinct animals have no habitat to live in, but the other plants and animals they depended on for food may also be gone as well.
24.It can be learned from the text that .
A.the gaur is an extinct species
B.the gaur lives in Asia and is endangered
C.scientists have cloned the African bongo antelope
D.both the cheetah and the giant panda live in Asia
25.The underlined words “a surrogate mother” in Paragraph 5 probably refer to a female who .
A.gives birth to a baby of its own
B.cannot give birth to a baby
C.gives birth to a baby for another female
D.provides DNA
26.The difficulty in cloning an extinct species is the lack of .
A.both the well-preserved DNA and a surrogate mother
B.both the habitat to live in and the well-preserved DNA
C.both the well-preserved DNA and plants to live on
D.both the habitat to live in and plants to live on
根据文章倒数第二段中的“On the one hand ... On the other hand ...”
27.In the author's opinion, it is possible that .
A.all the extinct species may be cloned
B.extinct species may be cloned and easily survive
C.a gaur can have a monkey as a surrogate mother
D.some extinct species may be cloned, but not survive
C
Plant cloning has been an agricultural technique used by farmers and gardeners for centuries. Grafting (嫁接) is a common form of plant cloning. Many plants in nature actually clone themselves and reproduce asexually
Cloned plants are much more predictable than normal plants, so their yield (产量) is more reliable. Cloned plants also reproduce faster, limiting the amount of time between planting and harvesting. It is also often cheaper to produce seeds through cloning than through traditional methods. Plants can essentially be optimized so that farmers or individual growers always have the best seeds available. With higher yield at a faster rate, farms can produce more food for more people while decreasing overall costs.
Cloning can be used to wipe out diseases that previously killed off entire fields of crops. This would make plants immune to the kinds of diseases that farmers and gardeners around the world fear each year. Crop failures due to disease and virus could become a thing of the past. Also, plants that are near extinction can be brought back to life through cloning.
Through cloning scientists can develop super fruits and vegetables of superior (更好的) nutritional quality. This could make for a healthier population overall. This has already been done through selective pollination (授粉), and genetic cloning could take it to the next level.
By plant cloning we have a population of identical plants and all these plants equally suffer from the same diseases, but in nature the weak would die and the strong would survive. While there are some dangers to consider with plant cloning, there are plenty of benefits that could prove vital to the propagation (繁衍) of the human species.
28.The underlined word “optimized” in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to “ ”.

Facing increasing pressure to raise students' scores on standardized tests, schools are urging kids to work harder by offering them obvious encouragements. Happy Meals are at the low end of the scale. With the help of businesses, schools are also giving away cars, iPods, seats to basketball games, and—in a growing number of cases—cold, hard cash. The appeal of such programs is obvious, but the consequences of tying grades to goods are still uncertain. It's been a common tradition in middle-class families to reward top grades with cash as a way to teach that success in school leads to success in life. But for many disadvantaged minority children, the long-term benefits of getting an education are not so clear, according to experts.
No one knows for sure how well cash and other big-ticket rewards work in education in the long run. But there are plenty of concerns that this kind of practice could have negative effects on kids. Virginia Shiller, a clinical psychologist, says that it's worth experimenting with cash encouragements but that tying them to success on a test is not a worthwhile goal. “I'd rather see rewards based on effort and responsibility—things that will lead to success in life,” she says.
Even if rewards don't lead to individual achievement on a test, they could have a meaningful effect in the school. Charles McVean, a businessman and philanthropist (慈善家), started a tutoring program which pays higher-achieving students $10 an hour to tutor struggling classmates and divides them into teams. During the course of the year, students bond and compete. The team posting the highest math scores wins the top cash prize of $100. McVean calls the combination of peer (同龄人) tutoring, competition, and cash encouragements a recipe for “nothing less than magic”.
For its part, the Seminole County Public Schools system in Florida plans to continue its report card encouragement program through the rest of the school year. The local McDonald's restaurants help the poor district by paying the $1,600 cost of printing the report card. Regina Klaers, the district spokeswoman, says most parents don't seem bothered by the Happy Meals rewards. “There are many ways we try to urge students to do well, and sometimes it's through the stomach, and sometimes it's the probability of students winning a car,” she says. “One size doesn't fit all.”

Looking forward to seeing you soon.
