What will man be like in the future—in 5,000 or even 50,000 years from now?We can only make guesses,of course, but we can be sure that he will be different from what he is today, for man is slowly changing all the time.
Let us take an obvious example.Man,even five hundred years ago,was shorter than he is today. Now,on average, men are about three inches taller.Five hundred years is a relatively short period of time,so we may assume that man will continue to grow taller.Again,in the modern world we use our brains a great deal.Even so,we still make use of only about 20% of the brain's capacity. As time goes on,however,we shall have to use our brains more and more, and eventually we shall need larger ones! This is likely to bring about a physical change to the head,in particular, the forehead will grow larger.
Nowadays our eyes are in constant use.In fact,we use them so much that very often they become weaker and we have to wear glasses. But over a very long period of time it is likely that man's eyes will grow stronger.
On the other hand,we tend to make less use of our arms and legs. These,as a result, are likely to grow weaker. At the same time, however, our fingers will grow more sensitive because they are used a great deal in modern life.
But what about hair? This will probably disappear from the body altogether in course of time because it does not serve a useful purpose any longer. In the future, then, both sexes are likely to be bald.
Perhaps all these give the impression that in the future man will not be a very attractive creature to look at!This may well be true. All the same,in spite of all these changes, future man will still have a lot in common with us.He will still be a human being, with thoughts and emotions similar to our own.

Hybrid cars (混合动力车) are cars that run on petrol and electricity. They have a small standard petrol engine and a battery (电池) electric motor to provide electric power.
There are some differences between different models of hybrid cars, but the general principle is that the car runs on petrol, and the electric motor kicks in when additional power is required, for example, when going uphill or accelerating. In some hybrid cars the petrol engine turns itself off when not needed, for example when the car has stopped at traffic lights, keeping only the electric engine running.
Conventional cars have large engines to deal with driving uphill and accelerating. Hybrid cars have much smaller petrol engines, improved by electric motors when needed, so they use less petrol. Another way that fuel consumption is cut is by a system of “regenerative (再生的) braking”. The electric motor is used to slow down the car, rather than conventional brakes. The energy produced by slowing the car is changed into electrical power, which is automatically stored in the battery. In effect, the battery recharges when you brake. In conventional cars the energy produced when braking is wasted.
In 1928, Ferdinand Porsche built an experimental hybrid car. The first mass produced hybrid car, the Toyota Prius, came out in Japan at the end of 1997. However, hybrid cars became available in the USA only in 1999. As they use less fuel, hybrid cars are cheaper to run. There are also many voices in place to encourage people to buy them. In some countries, hybrid car owners pay a lower rate of tax, and don't have to pay on certain roads. In some cities, hybrid cars are allowed to park for free.

Members of the International Space Station Expedition 44 crew are undertaking a first for humanity: tucking into leafy greens grown right there on the space station, in Zero-G.
The orbiting laboratory has been hosting the station's “Veg-01” experiments in growing vegetables in space since May 2014. These plants were grown and matured over a period of 33 days aboard the ISS, and sent back to Earth for food safety testing.
The second batch of seeds, which had been on board the ISS for 15 months, were planted on July 8,2015, and were again grown over a period of 33 days. It is this second batch that will be munched by the crew on August 10.
NASA researchers are hoping to determine whether these fresh vegetables have an impact on the physical and psychological health of the astronauts. Having fresh food like these available in space could have a positive impact on people's moods and could also provide some protection against radiation in space.
This is important groundwork, not just for the future of the ISS, which would potentially require fewer supply missions if astronauts could grow their own food, but also for NASA's manned Journey to Mars program, scheduled to take place in the 2030s and which would see astronauts spend at least a year on a trip to the Red Planet.
Earth won't be able to send resupply shuttles (再补给航天飞机) to the Mars crew, so they will need to be as self-sufficient as possible. And, if their mental health can be improved, both by fresh vegetables and the presence of plants, which can boost mood levels, so_much_the_better.
“The farther and longer humans go away from Earth, the greater the need to be able to grow plants for food, atmosphere recycling and psychological benefits. I think that plant systems will become important components of any long-duration exploration scenario,” said NASA payload scientist Gioia Massa.

Should people be allowed to take
photos during concerts?
Smartphones, tablet computers and digital cameras (数码相机) are now so common that some of us make a record of almost everything we do. Some would say that we are recording our lives more than we are living them.
Two weeks ago, at a concert in Atlanta, singer Beyoncé Knowles criticized a fan in the front row. __1__ Knowles was trying to get the audience to sing with her. She told the fan, “You can't even sing because you're too busy taping. I'm right in your face! You've got to seize this moment! __2__”
Other singers have also made clear requests to fans to experience their shows rather than photograph them.
Are these efforts really about the music? __3__ Knowles in fact banned concert photographers on her current tour because of unflattering (有损形象的) photos taken during her performance at this year's Super Bowl.
Usually, it's record companies and the artists' publicists who ban photographers. The musicians themselves are often grateful for any publicity they get through social media. Unless their concert is filmed for television or DVD, it cannot be experienced by anyone who isn't there.
Enthusiastic photographers complain that their full-size digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) cameras are usually banned. __4__
Some fans complain because they go to concerts to see and hear the artists, not to film them. __5__ So anyone taking any sort of photos is probably blocking someone's view. For this reason, some artists allow photography during the first three songs, then ask everyone to put their phones and cameras away.
A.Put that camera down!
B.The man,like many others,was filming the event.
C.A good view of the stage is hard to get at any concert.
D.More and more musicians are really interested in controlling their image.
E.Knowles once asked the audience to film the whole concert and upload it.
F.And their photos are just good enough to be bought at a lower-than-market price.
G.They can't understand why hundreds of people are allowed to take very bad photos with their phones.
【解题导语】 本文是一篇议论文。文章主要议论了是否应该允许人们在听演唱会时拍照。
1.解析:选B 由该段中的“Beyoncé Knowles criticized a fan”和“You can't even sing because you're too busy taping.”可知,坐在前排的歌迷正在用相机录演唱会的现场。
2.解析:选A 由上文中的criticized和“Knowles was trying to get the audience to sing with her”以及该空前她说的话可知,A项“把照相机放下”符合此处语境。
3.解析:选D 由该空前的“Are these efforts really about the music?”和该空后的“Knowles in fact banned concert photographers...because of unflattering(有损形象的) photos taken during her performance”可知,演唱者真正关心的是如何保护他们的形象。
4.解析:选G 由该空前的描述可知,摄影爱好者抱怨自己的数码单镜反光相机被禁止在演唱会拍摄,他们也难以理解为什么允许人们用手机拍摄劣质的照片。
5.解析:选C 由该空前的“they go to concerts to see and hear the artists, not to film them”和该空后的“So anyone taking any sort of photos is probably blocking someone's view.”可知,C项内容“在音乐会上很难清楚地看到舞台上的表演”符合此处语境。

We can find robots everywhere. Robots build cars, play chess and can clean your house. They may drive your car in the near future. Two robots, named Spirit and Opportunity, were sent to Mars on a mission (任务) to explore the red planet. Robots also help people in natural disasters. They are used in search and rescue operations following an earthquake or a nuclear accident.
In most cases, robots are sent to places considered to be unsafe. The problem is that all of those types of situations are extremely unpredictable and unfriendly. And it is very likely that robots in those situations become damaged. When a dog loses a leg, the animal eventually finds the best way to get around on three legs. In a short time, the dog learns to deal with its physical disability. Now, scientists have developed robots that behave in the same way.
Jeff Clune, a computer scientist, is developing the latest and advanced technology so that robots will continue operating after the first sign of injury. He wants the machines to have the ability to analyze the cause and change to continue performing until they can be repaired.
The researchers have added one more operation to the skill set of robots working under complicated conditions. They programmed a hexapod robot with six legs and a robotic arm. Their findings were reported in the journal Nature. Once the hexapod robots become damaged, they can use their own knowledge of how their body works to find a solution.
The hexapod robots are also programmed with childlike curiosity. In other words, they are always asking questions and looking for the answers. The whole process just takes about a minute for the robots to overcome the damage and continue to carry out the task.

It's 8 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 18,2028, and you are headed for a business appointment 300 miles away. You step into your circle, two-passenger air-cushion car, press a series of buttons and the national traffic computer notes your destination, figures out the current traffic situation and signals your car to slide out of the garage. Hands free, you sit back and begin to read the morning paper which is flashed on a flat TV screen over the car's dashboard. Tapping a button changes the page.
The car speeds up to 150 mph in the city's countryside, and then hits 250 mph in less built-up areas, driving over the smooth plastic road. You fly past a string of cities, many of them covered by the new domes (圆屋顶) that keep them evenly climatized all year round. Traffic is heavy, typically, but there's no need to worry. The traffic computer, which sends and receives signals to and from all cars on the road between cities, keeps vehicles at least 50 yds apart. There hasn't been an accident since the system began.
Suddenly your TV phone buzzes. A business partner wants a sketch of a new kind of impeller your firm is putting out for sports boats. You reach for your case and draw the diagram with a pencil-thin infrared flashlight (红外线闪光灯) on what looks like a TV screen lining the back of the case. The diagram is sent to a similar screen in your partner's office, 200 miles away. He presses a button and a fixed copy of the sketch rolls out of the machine. He wishes you good luck at the coming meeting and signs off.
Ninety minutes after leaving your home, you slide beneath the dome of your destination city. Your car slows down and heads for an outer-core office building where you'll meet your colleagues. After you get out, the vehicle parks itself in a garage to await your return. Private cars aren't allowed inside most city cores. Moving sidewalks and electrams (电车) carry the public from one location to another.

With_the_development_of_science_and_technology,_the_house_in_the_future_will be smart in many aspects.
To begin with, the house will be equipped with a central nervous system that can sense and analyze all appliances and systems, making adjustments according to changes of the surroundings. For example, it will send us messages to inform us we lack daily goods and even order them for us. Besides, the moment it senses its owner is less motivated, the house can adjust itself to make conditions comfortable. In addition, a solar powered unit will recycle water and turn waste into fuel . This is of great benefit to the environment.
In conclusion, there is no doubt that the house in the future will offer every convenience to us.

第一节 (共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
Employees are being flooded with too much information that has little to do with their work, according to a new survey.
On average, white-collar workers spend 51 percent of their work time receiving and processing information. Only one third of it was relevant to their work, the survey found. Information overload for white-collar workers has become a global issue. The huge amount of information has already affected their efficiency in management as well as their performance at work.
Buried with e-mails
Every morning, a secretary at the human resources department of an auto parts company opens her e-mail box, only to find it crammed with at least 50 unread mails. For her, even scanning through these e-mails every day takes at least half an hour. Some of her colleagues are not so lucky—they have to read at least 100.
Bothered with calls
Telephone calls are also causing a problem. More than 40 percent white-collar workers choose mobile phones as the preferred way to communicate important and urgent business matters. Talking saves time and energy over the clicking, reading and replying to e-mails, but phone calls are also more distracting (分心的). While answering a call, a clerk is likely to put away a much more important task at hand and start the business being talked about on the phone.
Solution? Not yet
Many companies start with providing staff with better computers, better Internet access and more advanced gadgets (小装置). For example, staff members above a certain level in one company will be provided with a blackberry phone for easier access to their e-mails. The company has also organized many lectures on efficient ways of e-mail management. Yet most white-collar workers think their companies can do more.

The first visit to a foreign country that I can remember was when I was about seven years old. We live about 5 miles away from the Canadian border. My family and I went to Parc Safari, Quebec, a wonderful place that has animals and rides. We drove down a nice long road. My sister and I sat in the back of the car, and it was a hatchback (有仓门式后背的汽车) so we opened it up. I remember feeding the animals snacks we had bought for ourselves.
The time we went we were told there would not be monkeys because they had escaped and had not been found. I remember thinking to myself, how cool it would be to see a monkey in our backyard.
Even though the monkeys were not there it was still so much fun. When we reached the area that had camels, giraffes and other animals, I remember one of the camels reached into the car to get our snacks. However, we were a little grossed_out because the camels seemed to froth (吐白沫) at the mouth and we had camel slobber (口水) all over the car and us.
It was one of the best family vacations that I can remember. It was not too far from home, it was in a different country and it was with my family. I cannot remember if we went on the rides or not but seeing many animals was a great time. Now that I am grown-up and have a son, I am planning to go there again. He is 7 years old and I think he is at a great age to enjoy a trip like this. I am sure it has changed a lot over the years but it will still be a great family trip.

From self-driving cars to carebots for elderly people, rapid development in technology has long represented a possible threat to many jobs normally performed by people. But experts now believe that almost 50 percent of occupations existing today will be completely unnecessary by 2025 as artificial intelligence continues to change businesses.
“The next fifteen years will see a revolution in how we work, and a revolution will necessarily take place in how we plan and think about workplaces,” said Peter Andrew, Director of Workplace Strategy for CBRE Asia Pacific.
A growing number of jobs in the future will require creative intelligence, social skills and the ability to use artificial intelligence.
The report is based on interviews with 200 experts, business leaders and young people from Asia Pacific, Europe and North America. It shows that in the US technology already destroys more jobs than it creates.
But the report states: “Losing occupations does not necessarily mean losing jobs—just changing what people do.” Growth in new jobs could occur as much, according to the research.
“The growth of 20 to 40 person companies that have the speed and technological know-how will directly challenge big companies,” it states.
A 2014 report by Pew Research found 52 percent of experts in artificial intelligence and robotics were optimistic about the future and believed there would still be enough jobs in the next few years. The optimists pictured “a future in which robots do not take the place of more jobs than they create,” according to Aaron Smith, the report's co-author.
“Technology will continue to affect jobs, but more jobs seem likely to be created. Although there have always been unemployed people, when we reached a few billion people there were billions of jobs. There is no shortage of things that need to be done and that will not change,” Microsoft's Jonathan Grudin told researchers.

30.According to the report,________.
A.people won't necessarily lose jobs
B.big companies will face fewer challenges
C.small companies will win against big companies
D.most people will become interested in technology
解析:选A 细节理解题。由第五段中的“Losing occupations does not necessarily mean losing jobs—just changing what people do.”可知,职业消失并不必然意味着工作丢失——它仅仅改变了人们做的事情。
31.What is the attitude of most experts in artificial intelligence and robotics to the future?
A.Mixed. B.Worried.
C.Hopeful. D.Doubtful.
解析:选C 推理判断题。由倒数第二段中的“52 percent of experts in artificial intelligence and robotics were optimistic about the future”和“The optimists pictured ‘a future in which robots do not take the place of more jobs than they create’”可知,大多数人工智能和机器人领域的专家对未来持乐观态度。
32.Jonathan Grudin's words in the last paragraph suggest that

Method 1: Starting Your Conversation
__36__ You can do this by moving into the person's field of vision and waving from a polite distance, or by tapping the person gently on the shoulder. If it's a real emergency, you can also turn the lights off and on quickly.
Position yourself carefully. Make sure that the light in the room is shining directly onto your face, and that you're not standing with your back to a light. __37__
Find out how the person prefers to communicate. Some deaf people are better lip-readers than others. Some deaf people may prefer to write back and forth or to use an interpreter. Man interactions between the deaf and the hearing require a combination of these methods. __38__
Method 2: Communicating through Lip-reading
Keep your sentences simple and use plain languages. __39__ The more complex your phrasing and vocabulary are, the more likely your deaf companion is to miss something. Try to avoid using slang or expressions that aren't widely known. When someone else is speaking, don't turn away from the deaf person in your group. __40__ You don't have to look at the deaf person while someone else is talking, but try to make sure your face is visible.
A.Get the person's attention.
B.It's important not to talk too quickly.
C.Or they'll miss parts of the conversation.
D.If so, it'll make them feel left out of the conversation.
E.Stand directly in front of the person, at a normal distance.
F.The best way to know which methods are most effective is to ask.
G.Try not to be too difficult when using your words in the beginning.

One possible version:
Life in the future
In the future, man's life will be very different from that of today. First, with the development of medicine, on the average, a person will live to the age of about 120. Because of the discovery of new energy, the environmental pollution will be under control. People's daily life will change greatly, too. For example, robots will do all your housework; your chair will change its color to match what you're wearing; you can also put your mobile phone around your wrist and can see the caller while speaking; you can even take a new elevator into space for your holidays.
