In George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion, the storyline centers around three main characters: Eliza Doolittle, Professor Henry Higgins, and Colonel Pickering. Eliza Doolittle is a flower girl who is under the instruction of Professor Higgins and Colonel Pickering to learn proper grammar and phonetics. Eliza can be characterized as a very sensitive and emotional person. She seeks to be treated like a duchess by men. Her personality clashes (冲突) with the personality of Professor Higgins in an extreme way. Professor Higgins is an arrogant (傲慢的), work-obsessed expert in phonetics who views Eliza simply as an experiment. He is a bachelor who has never found a place for women in his life due to his obsession (痴迷) with language. Colonel Pickering is a gentleman from India who is also an expert in language. He is gentler than Higgins and treats Eliza with respect while maintaining a professional interest in her. These three characters make up the main action of the play as Eliza learns speech of the upper class from them. She manages to pass herself off as a Hungarian princess at a formal party. This achievement makes Eliza give credence to the efforts of Higgins and Pickering. After experiencing life in the upper class, Eliza settles for a lower-class life with a man who loves her for who she is and wants to marry her. After some small and unimportant disputes,Eliza and Higgins remain friends later. Other memorable characters include Mrs. Higgins who maintains an authoritative (权威的) figure over her grown son and Mr. Doolittle who rises from a dustman to a respected speaker in the community.
I think that this is a good book because it shows that happiness can be achieved without wealth and fame. I highly recommend it due to its emphasis on grammatical and phonetic correctness.

Boy In The Tower by Polly Ho-Yen is a story of fear and hope, loneliness and friendship. Ade and his mother live right at the top of a tower block. It can get a bit lonely up there, but Ade loves to spend hours sitting at the window watching the whole city unfold down below.
Things are pretty quiet in the flat since his mother fell ill. She has stopped cooking meals and doing the housework and singing the songs she always used to sing. In fact, these days she hardly gets out of bed. Ade doesn't know what to do, so he watches the world outside. But suddenly that starts to change.
One day, one of the other tower blocks crashes to the ground and Ade watches the disorder with disbelief. Have some of his school friends died in the disaster? Is his best friend Gaia still alive? Then another building falls down and then another. The world around Ade's tower block is disintegrating under his very eyes.
And then huge plants start to spring up and grow at an alarming rate. Where have they come from? It looks like the plants are pulling the buildings down and they are preventing the emergency services from helping people.
Is this only happening in the area where Ade lives? The residents (居民) are deserting the tower blocks, and soon Ade is stuck in his flat because he can't leave his mother. Who or what can rescue him?
Ho-Yen has written a thrilling story with Boy In The Tower, but the most successful part is the narrative (叙述的) voice of the boy at the centre of the story. He doesn't understand what is going on around him and this adds a fascinating dimension to the plot that moves the novel along.
Taking place in an urban environment that many of the novel's readers will immediately identify with, Ho-Yen's first novel is an interesting read about an ordinary boy facing a tough struggle to survive.

A.Showing up. B.Breaking up.
C.Moving away. D.Coming back.

How to Stay Positive No Matter What Happens
No matter what happens, you can stay positive by following a few simple steps.
1 If you have something to look forward to that motivates you and makes you feel needed, your self-esteem will skyrocket. Pick one or two activities, such as doing volunteer work or teaching your favorite lessons to others, and promise to do it on a regular basis.
Pick a goal that is important to you and reach for it. Create a structured schedule that leads you to a goal that is important to you. Make it something you are passionate about and enjoy talking about. 2
Keep away from negative people. If certain people always make you down, minimize your time around them. 3 If you don't have a strong social structure, then start taking part in some activities you enjoy so that you can meet people with similar interests.
Build close connections with family and friends. Reach out and keep in touch with people you are close to. 4 Go for walks. Call old friends. Fill your life with the small important things that keep your spirits up.
5 A lot of us spend time struggling to achieve our goals that don't suit us and aren't meaningful to us. If you get stuck in a job or relationship that doesn't work for you, do something about it. Don't stay in the situations that add to your stress and anxiety levels.
A.Do what works for you.
B.Deal with negative situations positively.
C.You can stay positive by living a regular life.
D.Stay positive by filling your life with meaningful activities.
E.Working towards something every day will add positivity to your life.

Have you ever heard of an old saying? Intelligence is a born ability while goodness is a choice. Gifts are easy—they're given after all. Choices can be hard.
I got the idea to start Amazon many years ago. I came across the fact that the Internet usage was growing at 2,300 percent per year. I'd never seen or heard of anything that grew that fast, and the idea of building an online bookstore with millions of titles was very exciting to me. I had just turned 30 years old, and I'd been married for a year. I told my wife MacKenzie that I wanted to quit my job and go to do this crazy thing that probably wouldn't work since most start-ups don't and I wasn't sure what to expect. MacKenzie told me I should go for it. As a young boy, I'd been a garage inventor. I'd always wanted to be an inventor, and she wanted me to follow my passion.
I was working at a financial firm in New York City with a bunch of very smart people and I had a brilliant boss that I much admired. I went to my boss and told him I wanted to start a company selling books on the Internet. He took me for a long walk in Central Park, listened carefully to me, and finally said, “That sounds like a really good idea, but it would be an even better idea for someone who didn't already have a good job. ” That logic made some sense to me, and he convinced me to think about it for 48 hours before making a final decision. Seen in that light, it really was a difficult choice, but finally, I decided I had to give it a shot. I didn't think I'd regret trying and failing. And I suspected I would always be haunted by a decision not to try at all.
After much consideration, I took the less safe path to follow my passion, and I'm proud of that choice. For all of us, in the end, we are our choice.

2.Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined sentence?
A.The idea of not trying would keep coming to his mind and disturb him.

D.The decision not to try the online bookstore would terrify him.

Before the 1830s, most newspapers were sold through annual subscriptions in America, usually $8 to $10 a year. Today $8 or $10 seems a small amount of money, but at that time these amounts were forbidding to most citizens. Accordingly, newspapers were read almost only by rich people in politics or the trades. In addition, most newspapers had little in them that would appeal to a mass audience. They were dull and visually forbidding. But the revolution that was taking place in the 1830s would change all that.
The trend, then, was toward the “penny paper”—a term referring to papers made widely available to the public. It meant any inexpensive newspaper; perhaps more importantly it meant newspapers that could be bought in single copies on the street.
This development did not take place overnight. It had been possible (but not easy) to buy single copies of newspapers before 1830, but this usually meant the reader had to go down to the printer's office to purchase a copy. Street sales were almost unknown. However, within a few years, street sales of newspapers would be commonplace in eastern cities. At first the price of single copies was seldom a penny—usually two or three cents was charged—and some of the older well-known papers charged five or six cents. But the phrase “penny paper” caught the public's fancy, and soon there would be papers that did indeed sell for only a penny.
This new trend of newspapers for “the man on the street” did not begin well. Some of the early ventures (企业) were immediate failures. Publishers already in business, people who were owners of successful papers, had little desire to change the tradition. It took a few youthful and daring businessmen to get the ball rolling.

5.Which of the following best describes newspapers in America before the 1830s?
A.Academic. B.Unattractive.
C.Inexpensive. D.Confidential.
根据第一段中的第四句和第五句“In addition, most newspapers had little in them that would appeal to a mass audience. They were dull and visually forbidding. ”可知,当时的报纸并不吸引人。unattractive与文中的“dull and visually forbidding”意义相近。
6.What did street sales mean to newspapers?
A.They would be priced higher.
B.They would disappear from cities.
C.They could have more readers.
D.They could regain public trust.
而从“within a few years, street sales of newspapers would be commonplace in eastern cities”进一步印证了street sales(街头销售)的出现使得报纸有了更多的读者。
7.Who were the newspapers of the new trend targeted at?
A.Local politicians. B.Common people.
C.Young publishers. D.Rich businessmen.
根据第一段中的“...at that time these amounts were forbidding to most citizens. Accordingly, newspapers were read almost only by rich people in politics or the trades. ”和第三段中的“street sales of newspapers would be commonplace in eastern cities”以及“But the phrase ‘penny paper’ caught the public's fancy”可知,新趋势下,报纸的目标读者是普通大众。
8.What can we say about the birth of the penny paper?
A.It was a difficult process.
B.It was a temporary success.
C.It was a robbery of the poor.
D.It was a disaster for printers.

Pride and Prejudice for the Modern Woman
Let us imagine how Pride and Prejudice,Jane Austen's most famous work, might be updated, 200 years on.
Austen's popularity is rooted in her intelligence. But today she would certainly have had a very different life, as would her characters. Here's my own suggestion...
It is a truth finally and universally acknowledged that a single woman with brains deserves to have equal opportunities to men, however disadvantaged she may feel by sexism.
“My dear husband,”said his hopeful wife one day,“have you heard that the local store, standing empty for so long,is taken over by a bright young businesswoman?”
Her dull and indifferent(漠不关心的) husband replied that he had not.
“But it is, it is,” she replied excitedly.
Mr. Dull-Husband made no reply.
“Don't you want to know her plans?” she cried with some impatience.
“Well, clearly you think it matters to your silly little head...so I'd better listen. ”
“Well, my dear, the rumour(传言) is that she has already set up a string of successful businesses in northern England, though how a woman can know anything about that is beyond me. She will move in herself next month. ”
“What is her name?”
“Bingley. ”
“Is she married or single?”
“What a question! And none of your business. But her coming will be a fine thing for our five boys. ”
“How so? How can it possibly affect them?”
“My dear love: those lazy boys need something to wake them up. There are bound to be jobs going. ”
“Is that her point in settling here? Surely as a woman she has simply taken a fancy to the place. ”
“Nonsense, my love, how little you've noticed the world has changed. She's got a first-rate degree and some sort of business qualification, I'm told. She surely needs one of our boys! Perhaps you might give her a call. ”
“Me? No. Perhaps you can take an interest. You still have your looks, after all. She may even offer you a job. ”
“Oh, that's not likely. These new chances belong to the younger generation. But now you mention it, I think I'll go along all the same. ”
And Mrs. Bennet went along. That was 10 years ago. She is now managing director of a FTSE-listed company.
...It would remain the case, of course, that Mrs. Bennet would be one of very few women on the company board, that her salary would be lower than her male colleagues, her bonus of a more “female” dimension and her lifespan (年限)among the city's business leaders shorter than theirs. Still, she'd no doubt have enjoyed Davos—and might even have hobnobbed (攀谈) with influential figures.

B.Women have to pay a high price for success.

Scientists in London are working to develop a wheelchair that can be moved simply by looking in the direction in which the user wishes to travel.
Most paralyzed (瘫痪的) people can still move their eyes because they are directly connected to the brain. Some existing technologies already allow severely disabled people to stare at arrows (箭头) on a computer and direct the movement of a wheelchair. But there are problems with that system, including a delay between the movement of the eyes and the wheelchair.
“Current tracking software often uses a screen-based system where you have a screen open and you look at locations on the screen. The problem with that is that it diverts (转移) the user's attention from the outside world and therefore there's more risk of not noticing other things like stones in the way,”said Kirubin Pillay, a PhD student at Imperial College London.
A team led by Aldo Faisal at Imperial College London has developed a software that allows users to move the chair just by looking in the direction they want to take.
“Our eyes are not only a window into our soul. They're also a window to our intentions. So if we want to go somewhere, we will look there in a specific manner. We can build a computer system that can decode (解码) our eye movements, and so we observe eye movements with an eye tracker, and the computer interprets these commands and drives the wheelchair accordingly,”said Fasial.
Two cameras trained on the eyes observe their movements and can determine whether a patient is merely looking around or wants to move in a certain direction.
Visual information detected by cameras is analyzed by algorithms(计算程序)and then translated into instructions for movement that's almost instantaneous(瞬间的).
The camera-based system costs only about $85 because most of the work is done by the algorithms. No expensive hardware is needed. The London team hopes to make the system commercially available within three years.
25.One of the current tracking software's problems is________.
A.there is a mistake in it
B.there is a delay between the movement of the eyes and the wheelchair
C.it costs much and few people can afford it

26.The new wheelchair being developed will ________.
A.use a screen-based system to let the user move
B.avoid the risks of being blocked in the way
C.move directly in the direction the user wants to go
D.determine the user's moving direction
根据文章第四段中的“...move the chair just by looking in the direction they want to take. ”可知C项正确。
27.What can we infer from the text?
A.The price of the new wheelchair will not be very high.
B.The new wheelchair can move very fast.
C.People can buy the new wheelchair in the market now.
D.The new wheelchair is mostly conducted by hardware.
28.The author of the text aims to ________.
A.stress the importance of a new wheelchair

C
The voice in your head is a lie. What you hear when you open your mouth is distinctly less beautiful than what everyone around you hears.
Your voice emanates from the lower portion of your throat, as expelled air from the lungs passes across your vocal chords (声韧带),which vibrate (振动) to produce sound. This sound is then made louder by your voice box, changed into words by your tongue and lips, and spread through the surrounding atmosphere until it enters your listener's ear canal to stimulate their eardrums (鼓膜) and structures within the inner ear—which then convert the analog waveform (模拟波形) to electrical impulses that the brain can understand.
However, the inner ear doesn't just pick up sound from external sources. Vibrations coming from within your body can activate these auditory (听觉的) structures as well. And when you speak, the rapid fluttering of your vocal chords actually causes your entire braincase to vibrate. “When you speak, the vocal folds in your throat vibrate, which causes your skin, skull and oral cavities to also vibrate, and we perceive this as sound,” Ben Hornsby, a professor of audiology at Vanderbilt University, said.
But sound doesn't travel through bone nearly as easily as it does through air. This effect is heightened by the fact that you really can't hear your own voice directly, because your ears are positioned behind your mouth, and the sounds coming out of your mouth must first bounce off objects and back into your ears. This, too, causes the waveform to lose energy as well as frequency and pitch, resulting in you hearing a distorted, lower tone than what people hear directly from out of your mouth.
“You hear your voice in stereo,” Michael Kelly said,“while other people just hear it in mono (单声道).” That's why you may think you sound like James Earl Jones in your head, but end up sounding like Steve Urkel on tape.
29.What is the main idea of the text?
A.Why your voice sounds different inside your head.
B.The difference between the sound you hear and others hear.
C.How people produce a voice before they can hear it.
D.How your voice spreads in the air and in your head.
30.What is the meaning of the phrase “emanates from” in the second paragraph?
A.Comes from. B.Benefits from.
C.Differs from. D.Suffers from.
31.According to Ben Hornsby, how is sound formed?
A.It is formed by the sound produced only by the throat.
B.It is the result of the whole braincase vibrating.
C.It is from the quick movement of your vocal chords.
D.It is received by the inner ear from the outside world.
根据文章第三段中的“And when you speak, the rapid fluttering of your vocal...entire braincase to vibrate. ”可知,Ben Hornsby所说的话是对这句话的进一步解释说明,所以选B。
32.Why cannot you hear your voice right away?
A.The waveform has lost energy, frequency and pitch.
B.The sound travels through bone less easily than it does through air.
C.The sound bounces off before entering your ears.
D.Your eardrum is affected by the feedback of the waveform.
根据文章第四段中的“This effect is heightened...can't hear your own voice directly, because your ears are...”
D
I found the imagination of becoming a grandmother somewhat discouraging. I was younger than I thought a grandmother should be when I got the news that I was going to become one myself. I admitted,it was not a role that I was emotionally ready to accept. I had been a young mother, and had certainly hoped my daughter would not face that same challenge. I remarried when she was a teenager, and then had two more children. On getting the news that she was expecting, I remembered thinking “What do I know about being a grandmother? —I haven't even finished raising my own kids yet!” I didn't like to be unprepared,so I read a few books about grand-parenting. That gave me a little help, but I was still uncertain. I thought about other grandmothers I knew, and got a few ideas I liked and a few more that I didn't. But I couldn't quite figure out what kind of grandmother I wanted to be. Then I thought about my own grandmother, Granny, as she's known by most people, and I knew I had the answer.
I didn't realize it until that moment, but my own grandmother was the example for the kind of grandmother I wanted to be. I am fortunate that I got to spend a lot of time with my grandparents when I was a little kid. Here's what I learned from my Granny.
Grandmothers always have a cookie jar. For my entire life, Granny always had a cookie jar full of cookies. When I was a little tiny girl, just at eye level with the counter, Granny would get the cookie jar down for me. When I was a little older I learned how to pull the chair over so I could reach. As I got taller, if I really stretched, I could reach the cookie jar with my finger tips and move it close enough to get it down off the counter to find out what kind of treat was inside. Always the first thing I did when I went to Granny's house was to check the cookie jar, and there were always cookies in it. Many years later, I'll drive my own children to Granny's house and the first thing is to get us all a cookie.
So grandmothers must have a cookie jar,and on my granddaughter's first Christmas,my daughter bought me my own cookie jar. She said when they came to see me, her daughter would find the treat the way she did and I did.

How Can I Fight Laziness?
Lazy people will never amount to anything in life. However, laziness can be defeated once a few changes have been made in your mind.
36 Many people lack sleep constantly, since they stay up too late and get up too early to prepare for work. These people have little motivation once they arrive home. Laziness works hand in hand with a lack of motivation and a tendency to put off things. By adjusting your sleep schedule to provide a few more hours of meaningful rest, you can fight laziness throughout the day.
Another way to fight laziness is to change your mind from passive to active. Some people treat their lives as if they were pushed from task to task. Others take a more proactive approach, viewing each task as a challenge they must overcome alone. 37
Some people fight laziness by removing the temptations(诱惑) that surround them. A television in the living room may provide entertainment, but watching too much TV often contributes to laziness. 38 Complete a few tasks and reward yourself with what you enjoy, such as a good dinner or a film.
Laziness can also be a lasting problem at home. Couples and children may all have different energy levels, but laziness can be spread if not dealt with immediately. 39 Be the first to collect and wash dishes after a meal. Others in the home may eventually follow your example and perform their own task. It is difficult to practice laziness when you are surrounded by motivated people.
40 Enough exercise and a balanced diet can help you to develop a healthy lifestyle, thus enabling you to have more energy and help lift your spirits.
A.To fight family laziness, set an example.
B.Knowing how to fight laziness is important.
C.One way to fight laziness is to get enough sleep.
D.Finally, taking exercise regularly can help you fight laziness.
E.With strong determination, you will be able to achieve your goal.
F.Laziness sets in when you no longer feel in charge of your own life.
G.Create a reward system for yourself, just as parents do for a child.

答案:but
答案:the
故答案为were being sent。
答案:were being sent
答案:which
be familiar with“对……熟悉”。句意:为了熟悉对飞机的控制,那个男士不得不让飞机在空中盘旋了几次。故答案为with。
答案:with

I am angry about the behavior of dishonest in exams. I'm not saying that I'm a good student and that I've never cheated. I once write the answers on my hand for a history test but, unluckily, caught by my teacher. Because she was one of my most favorites, there were no words to describe how sorry I felt at once. I thought cheat would help me keep my straight A's. Little I know that I was hurting not only herself but also my teacher. From this lesson I know our teachers want their students to succeed by learning with their own and do the best they can, not by cheating.
