A new course on world heritage and its conservation offers a good opportunity for the young people to learn about the legacy (遗产) of humanity and gain a sense of responsibility to help protect the planet we live on.
According to a world heritage education programme jointly launched by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and China's Ministry of Education, the course will first be offered at several schools in Beijing before being included as a mandatory course (必修课) for high school students nationwide.
The new course covers photos, slide shows and documentaries on the magnificence of the world heritage sites. The class aims to tell children what world heritage is and why and how it should be protected. A total of 177 nations, including China, have signed the Convention Concerning the Protection of World Cultural and Natural Heritage. Listed are 754 sites all over the world, of which 29 are in China—the third most after Spain and Italy. Currently, protection of the country's cultural and natural resources leaves much to be desired. Education is undoubtedly the best way to cultivate people's sense for protecting cultural and natural resources.
The introduction of such a programme in Chinese classrooms will certainly help our young people realize the significance of common heritage, learning about world heritage sites, the history and traditions of different cultures, ecology, and the importance of protecting biological and cultural diversity.
More importantly, it will help cultivate a sense of responsibility in the minds of young participants. This is critical in protecting these cultural and natural legacies, as well as our living environment and the limited resources for sustainable development.

Authorities in India warn that the world-famous Taj Mahal desperately needs repairs. Some say that this architectural landmark could eventually collapse unless efforts are made to protect and preserve it.
The Taj Mahal, completed in 1648, was built in Agra,India, on the edge of the Yamuna River. The wooden foundation that holds up the building stays strong because of the moist environment around the river. If the river were to dry out, the wooden foundation could crack and fall apart. Over the past decade, the Yamuna has been shrinking, especially during the summer months. This is partly because of overuse of the river water by residents and businesses.
Some officials have said the building may collapse in as little as five years. Other experts disagree and question whether the building really faces any danger. Certain politicians and historians (历史学家), however, are pushing the government to begin preservation (保护) efforts, or work to repair and take care of the monument. This is not the first time the Taj Mahal has been threatened. In 1996, officials thought air pollution was turning the building yellow. The Indian government ordered nearby factories to stop burning coal or leave the area.
Shah Jahan,a former emperor (皇帝) of India, began building the Taj Mahal in 1631. He had it built in honor of his deceased (已故的) wife, Mumtaz Mahal, who was buried inside the Taj Mahal with Jahan. Many architects say the building is a masterpiece of symmetry. Symmetry is a visual (视觉的) technique where the right side of an object looks the same as the left side of the object.
The Taj Mahal has been named one of the Seven Wonders of the World, a list of amazing human-made landmarks. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)lists the Taj Mahal as a World Heritage Site and helps preserve the famous structure. Because of the building's importance in Indian culture, Minister of Parliament Ramshankar Katheria has taken the case to both the Prime Minister and President of India. Katheria has said,“I am demanding a high-level inquiry (调查) to analyze the severe threat posed to the wooden structures in the foundation of the Taj. ”

Volunteering gives you an opportunity to change lives, including your own. If you're feeling frustrated by the news of a disaster, volunteering to help can be a great way to cope with the frustration. If you'd like to support a cause but can't afford to donate money, you can donate your time instead.
Find What's Right for You. Unlike school, with volunteering you get to pick what really interests you and who (or what) is most deserving of your time. Need some ideas to get you started?
1 Become a camp counselor, or volunteer for an after-school sports program. Special Olympic games and events are great ways to get to know special-needs kids.
Give back over the holidays. Serve Thanksgiving dinner to the homeless, volunteer at your local food bank, or distribute toys to kids. 2
Play with pets at a local animal shelter. Most shelters depend on volunteers to keep the cats and dogs happy and well exercised.
3 If you're interested in politics, it's a great way to find out how things work on the inside. Even if you can't vote, you can still work to get your candidate elected—whether it's the president of the U.S. or your town mayor.
Help the environment. Join a group and help out with river preservation. 4 You don't have to be an outdoor type—if you can't picture yourself hauling trees up a hill, you could help out in a park office or education center.
5 Lots of us are close to people who have a medical problem. It can feel good to donate your time to an organization that raises money for research, delivers meals, or offers other help to people with an illness.
If you have more than one thing you love, find a way to combine the two. For example, if you love kids and are great at arts and crafts, visit your local children's hospital and offer to lead art activities for young patients.
A.Take part in a local park clean-up day.
B.Help kids learn and grow.
C.Organize an activity for kids.
D.Volunteer for a political campaign.
E.Support a health-related cause.
F.Help your local neighborhood get more money.

“Food in France is still primarily about pleasure,” says Mark Singer, technical direc tor of cuisine at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris. “Cooking and eating are both pastimes(消遣) and pleasure. ” The French might start their day with bread, butter, jam, and perhaps something hot to drink—it's a time of the day when the whole family can be united. Singer, born in Philadelphia, has lived in France for more than 40 years.
“Although things have changed greatly in the past 20 years when it comes to food in the country,” he says, “and what was a big affair with eating has been slowly softened up, there are still events in the year, like birthdays and New Year's Eve and Christmas Eve that are still really anchored in traditional food and cooking. But it's not every day. ”
“Some people think French food life may be a performance,” adds Jennifer Berg, director of graduate food studies at New York University. “They want to believe that France is this nation where people are spending five hours a day going to 12 different markets to get their food. The reality is most croissants(羊角面包) are factory-made, and most people are buying convenience food, except for the very small group of people in high society. But part of our identity relies on believing that myth. ”
In Italy, as in France, takeout is still relatively rare. “Eating fast is not at all part of our culture,” says Marco Bolasco, editorial director of Slow Food and an Italian food expert. “Our meals are relaxed, even during a lunch break. Food in Italy is love, and nutrition, and pleasure,” he says. An Italian child's first experience with food is not small round cakes or rice or eggs, but probably ice cream, notes Bolasco. Status and wealth play less of a role in food.

Studying abroad will shape you in various ways. You will learn things you never would have if you had stayed home. When you are young and unattached, you should travel. Besides, you just might save a large sum of money. College is expensive in the United States. It's cheap or free in other countries even for foreigners, so why not get out of here and come back smarter?
More and more American students are currently studying at German colleges. That number has increased by 20% over the last three years. Living costs are about $7,000 a year, which is even lower than in other European countries. Germany encourages international students. They create a multicultural landscape that benefits German students as well. According to a new report, Germany is home to six of the world's 100 best universities. These schools offer around 900 degrees completely in English and many German students speak the language.
You could be part of Finland's excellent education system. The Finns charge no tuition and offer a number of courses purely in English. They would be happy for you to add flavor to their school scene. Cost of living there is high. Be prepared for frosty winters that far north, but you will get that sweet midnight sun in the summer.
Many other European nations offer cheap or free college for foreign students, but if South America is more your thing, try Brazil. Most of the education will take place in Portuguese, so if that is in your plan you can study near beautiful beaches and jungles. The University of Sao Paulo and State University of Campinas are both highly ranked internationally. Your money will go a long way there, too.
Many of the lessons you will learn will be outside the classroom. Living on the economy in a foreign country will keep you on your toes. You will learn new customs, how to bargain, stay safe, budget and become more flexible with people. There is no better way to learn a language than by immersing yourself in it. At first, it will be the toughest thing you have ever done. Eventually, it will become second nature.

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

Here is an astonishing and significant fact: Mental work alone can't make us tired. It sounds absurd. But a few years ago, scientists tried to find out how long the human brain could labor without reaching a stage of fatigue (疲劳).To the amazement of these scientists, they discovered that blood passing through the brain, when it is active, shows no fatigue at all! If we took a drop of blood from a day laborer, we would find it full of fatigue toxins(毒素) and fatigue products. But if we took blood from the brain of an Albert Einstein, it would show no fatigue toxins at the end of the day.
So far as the brain is concerned, it can work as well and swiftly at the end of eight or even twelve hours of effort as at the beginning. The brain is totally tireless. So what makes us tired?
Some scientists declare that most of our fatigue comes from our mental and emotional (情感的) attitudes. One of England's most outstanding scientists,J. A. Hadfield, says,“The greater part of the fatigue from which we suffer is of mental origin. In fact, fatigue of purely physical origin is rare. ” Dr. Brill, a famous American scientist, goes even further. He declares,“One hundred percent of the fatigue of a sitting worker in good health is due to emotional problems. ”
What kinds of emotions make sitting workers tired? Joy?Satisfaction? No!A feeling of being bored, anger, anxiety, tenseness, worry, a feeling of not being appreciated—those are the emotions that tire sitting workers. Hard work by itself seldom causes fatigue. We get tired because our emotions produce nervousness in the body.

New technology links the world as never before. Our planet has shrunk. It's now a “global village” where countries are only seconds away by fax or phone or satellite link. And, of course, our ability to benefit from this high-tech communications equipment is greatly improved by foreign language skills.
Deeply involved in this new technology are a group of modern business people who have a growing respect for the economic value of doing business abroad. In modern markets, success overseas often helps support domestic (国内的) business efforts.
Overseas assignments are becoming increasingly important to advancement within executive(执行人员) ranks. The executive stationed in another country no longer need fear being“out of sight and out of mind. ” He or she can be sure that the overseas effort is central to the company's plan for success, and that promotions often follow or accompany an assignment abroad. If an employee can succeed in a difficult assignment overseas, superiors will have greater confidence in his or her ability to cope back in the United States where cross-cultural considerations and foreign language issues are becoming more and more popular.
Thanks to a variety of relatively inexpensive communications devices with business applications, even small businesses in the United States are able to get into international markets. English is still the international language of business. But there is an ever-growing need for people who can speak another language. A second language isn't generally required to get a job in business, but having language skills gives a candidate the edge when other qualifications appear to be equal.
The employee posted abroad who speaks the country's principal language has an opportunity to fast-forward certain negotiations, and can have the cultural insight to know when it is better to move more slowly. The employee at the home office who can communicate well with foreign clients(客户)over the telephone or by fax machine is an obvious advantage to the firm.

C.Technical know-how.

The greatest artistic creative geniuses I've ever seen have been those who can turn garbage into art, not just gluing together junk, but really making waste into something unique, cool, and good, something you'd put into your home for instance. There's something to be said about recycling and repurposing of those items we commonly throw away.
The ability to take garbage and turn it into art,or something that is fascinating to look at is a skill all of its own. I have often said that the true geniuses of our time, that is to say, the creative genius artists of our era, are those who can do this—create art that can command a high price tag from junk.
Over the years while traveling through the United States, I had gone into museums in many parts of the country. Some of the best art I've ever seen in my life has come from garbage, trash, or junk that has been reworked and recycled into something spectacular. Best of all the artists don't have much in material cost. In fact they are using their minds to do a lot with very little. Just think if we have used all our minds to do this, how little we might actually throw away, and how more efficiently we could run our factories, production, and even households.
The waste will end up in a landfill,or a dump somewhere, and eventually it will decay in the soil, perhaps causing ground water pollution. However, if we can repurpose these items for a couple of more rounds, and waste less, then we are providing efficiency for our civilization, and that's a good thing. Any artist who can do this is not only one making contributions to the environment, but also one making contributions to humanity, using their brain power and creative genius to make us all better.

Children form opinions about drugs and alcohol at a very early age. Even four-and five-year-olds have definite opinions about alcohol. Preschoolers, because of the advertisements they see on TV, often think that alcohol helps people have more fun and be better athletes! Images of alcohol are everywhere in our society—consumption of alcohol is depicted (描述)twice per hour in daytime shows, and three times in an average evening program.
Despite the prevalence (盛行)of alcohol in our society, and the problems that can be associated with it, many parents feel uncomfortable when talking about alcohol with their children, or are not sure when and how to start. Many parents believe that teenage drinking is something that their children would never be involved in.
Unfortunately, teenage drinking is very common in North Dakota. In a state-wide survey of adolescents in junior and senior high school, only 24% claimed to have never consumed alcohol. When asked about their drinking in the past 30 days:
·61% adolescents reported drinking
·42% drank five or more drinks in a row
·17% reported binge drinking (无节制饮酒)
·4. 2 % reported driving and drinking
Other research on rural youth in North Dakota has found about 10% of a sample of fifth and sixth graders to be engaged in frequent drinking. Teenagers who were reported alcohol use (especially those who began use in late elementary school and junior high school) were more likely to be depressed, felt less positive about both their family and friends, and had poorer grades.
Research has found that children and even teenagers look to their parents in making decisions about important things in their life. Decisions about using alcohol are undoubtedly something that parents will want to provide guidance about.

The iPhone Generation
Today it is common to see people who walk about with colored wires hanging from their ears wherever they go. They move about in their personal bubbles, sometimes unaware of what's happening around them. 36 Outside life is shut out. So are you one of them?
For me, walking around in my own personal bubble is perfect. 37 What's even better, wearing earphones seems to give a signal to people which says, “I'm not available for chatting at the moment. ”
Suppose, you're at work and about to make an incredible breakthrough, but a colleague suddenly turns up. At this precise moment, the slightest disturbance would break your concentration. 38 Once again, those wires hanging from your ears would be sure to give that “Go away!” signal.
39 It's probably part of the growing up stage when they just want to ignore their whole family. While their mothers give them lectures about why they should do their “Yes. Mum. ” Problem solved.
Pretty soon, not only will we have pretty colored wires hanging from our ears—but also our brains will be directly plugged into some new high-tech instruments.
