1990 was a significant year in world events. In February, Nelson Mandela was set free after 27 years in prison. In October, East and West Germany became one country again. Then at the end of 1990, the World Wide Web was born. For this final event we have one man to thank, Tim Berners-Lee, the father of the Web.
Berners-Lee was born on June 8,1955 in London, England. His parents, both computer designers, encouraged him to think and work creatively as he grew up.He was an excellent student and naturally took an interest in computers and science.
After graduating from Oxford University, Tim went to work at a science research center in Switzerland. There he developed some of the different systems that would later become the Web.The first was HTML, the computer language used to make web pages. The second was an address system that let computers anywhere find each other and send and receive information. In 1990, while still at the science center in Switzerland, he put them together to make the first Internet browser. It could run on any computer and allowed people to share their information with the rest of the world.
Tim knew that the more people used the Web, the more useful it would be.He wasn't interested in money but knowledge, so he gave out his invention for free to anyone who was interested. Many were interested and the growth of the Internet began.
Today Tim works as a professor at the MIT in America, researching new and interesting ways to use the Web.He has received many awards from governments and organizations for his efforts. He is still not very interested in money. That is why he is so admired by his students and workmates. It may also be one of the reasons why few people outside the world of technology know his name.

Have you ever had a troubling problem that has left you wondering where to turn for help?
Eve Hobsbawm is a life adviser. She offers advice to people struggling with all kinds of problems, from relationship difficulties to what to cook for dinner. She does this through a website inviting people to email her with their problems. There's nothing unusual about that, except for the fact that Eve is only eight years old.
This junior trouble-shooter, who also goes by the name “Miss Evie Mouse” lives in London with her parents. Not only is Miss Mouse willing to lend an ear to her clients, she will also offer them a helping hand, for a fee of course. She charges between 10p for advice on little, everyday worries and £1 for more complicated problems. Her areas of expert knowledge, if not of experience, are problems about love, life and work-life balance.
A problem shared is a problem halved, but Eve can't always help.A note on the site states that she can't answer questions like “Does space ever end?” and she won't solve schoolwork-related problems, especially not maths.
She explained to the Guardian newspaper that she was inspired to set up the company by her father who runs a tech start-up.Eve said,“As soon as I saw his business and understood the kinds of things businesses do, I thought that's what I'm going to do.”
But since setting up her company in December she has been so overwhelmed with messages that she has had to take a step back.“There has been a lot of sudden interest in my site, which is nice,” she says,“but I need to do my homework too, so I won't be solving any more problems for a bit.”

Every time your fingers touch your cell phone, they leave behind trace of amounts of chemicals. And each chemical offers clues to you and your activities.By studying them, scientists might be able to piece together a story about your recent life, a new study finds.
A molecule (分子)is a group of atoms. It is the smallest amounts of some chemicals.Your skin is covered in molecules picked up by everything you touched. With each new thing your skin contacts, you leave behind some small share of what it'd touched earlier.
Researchers at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD)recently studied such chemical leftovers on the phones of 39 volunteers. The study was led by biochemist Amina Bouslimani. To explore those residues (剩余物), the UCSD team wiped the surface of each volunteer's phone with a cotton swab (药签).The scientists also swabbed each person's right hand. Then the researchers compared the chemicals found on each cell phone.
The scientists discovered as many of the molecules as they could. They then compared those to a database of chemicals.Pieter Dorrestein, a UCSD pharmaceutical chemist, had helped set up that database a few years earlier, which contains various substances, including spices, caffeine and medicines.
Traces of everything from hundreds to thousands of different molecules turned up on each phone. The molecules suggested what had been in the body, and what each person had handled before touching the phone. From all these molecules, Bouslimani says,“We could tell if a person is likely female, uses high-end cosmetics (化妆品), colors her hair, drinks coffee, prefers beer over wine or likes spicy food.”
Police already use molecular analyses to look for traces of explosives or illegal drugs. To date, Dorrestein says, he's never heard of police using phone residues to narrow down behaviour clues to search for a suspect. But detectives might one day use such data to track down someone who left a phone behind at a crime scene.

Personal computers and the Internet give people new choices about how to spend their time.
Some may use this freedom to share less time with certain friends or family members, but new technology will also let them stay in closer touch with those they care most about.I know this from personal experience.
E-mail makes it easy to work at home, which is where I now spend most weekends and evenings. My working hours aren't necessarily much shorter than they once were but I spend fewer of them at the office. This lets me share more time with my young daughter than I might have if she'd been born before electronic mail became such a practical tool.
The Internet also makes it easy to share thoughts with a group of friends.Say you do something fun—see a great movie perhaps—and there are four or five friends who might want to hear about it.If you call each one,you may tire of telling the story.
With e-mail,you just write one note about your experience,at your convenience, and address it to all the friends you think might be interested. They can read your message when they have time, and read only as much as they want to.They can reply at their convenience, and you can read what they have to say at your convenience.
E-mail is also an inexpensive way to stay in close touch with people who live far away.More than a few parents use e-mail to keep in touch, even daily touch, with their children off at college. We just have to keep in mind that computers and the Internet offer another way of staying in touch. They don't take the place of any of the old ways.

(2019·四川省绵阳南山中学月考)
In today's Internet age, the demand for online games continues to grow.Online computer game centers exist in many cities and towns throughout Asia.Facing the pressures of school and life, people tend to the virtual(虚拟的)world, expecting a diversion from these problems.Too often, however, they can lead to problems and unhealthy addictions.
This is most clearly seen in the example of South Korea. The country has the world's highest percentage of high-speed Internet services. It also has a high number of online game players and related problems. In 2002, a young man collapsed(突然晕倒)and died while playing online games. He had been playing almost non-stop for 86 hours at an Internet café.Another young man killed his sister after becoming confused between the online world and real life.A 12-year-old boy stole US $16,000 from his father and ran away from home.He did this to continue his obsession(着迷)with an online game.Such problems, however, don't just happen in South Korea. They are spreading to other parts of Asia as well.
What kinds of people develop online game addiction? What does the problem look like?Dr.SueHuei Chen, a clinical psychologist, researches Internet addiction. She discovered some signs of at-risk individuals such as lack friendships and good social skills. Those problem individuals feel it so compulsive (强迫的)to play online games that they could sacrifice things such as school or family. They feel the need to spend more and more time online. And they become upset if anyone tries to limit their online game playing.
How many problem game players are there? In mainland China, the potential number of problem online gamers is alarming. In 2004, the China daily reported that China had 13.8 million online game players.Besides, it stated that 80 percent of these were under 25 and had signs of addiction.Such numbers point toward a growing problem among Chinese youth.
Make sure to keep control over your online game playing. If you don't control it, it can get control of you.

Most high school students would rather spend their summer vacations far away from the classroom. But Vineet Kosaraju and Nikhil Cheerla are choosing to go back to school, and this time they are the teachers.
“I think it's really nice that I can help the community by spending just a little bit of time every week helping just a few students here and there try and learn programming,” Kosaraju said.
Friends since they were young boys, Kosaraju and Cheerla always shared a love of computer science. They learned the skills from their parents and school, but recognized that not all children have that chance.
“Programming isn't taught in that many schools, especially low income (收入)schools, because there isn't that much money to support it,” Kosaraju said.
So he and Cheerla developed “Math and Coding,” an after-school program for kids of all ages to learn the basics of computer programming.
Between applying for college and doing their own homework, the two boys now spend a few hours every week going to different libraries teaching classes that cover everything from building basic games to developing apps.
The friends started the program a little over a year ago and already, it's spread to more than a dozen libraries across the Bay Area in California. They are even training volunteers to teach these very same classes in other US states and Canada.
Maryann Mitchell brought her 8-year-old granddaughter, Gabriella, to a class on coding at the Alum Rock Library in San Jose, California.
“It's a chance for her to learn,” Mitchell said.“It's the way of the future, and it's a good way for her to get grounded and be ready for what the future holds.”

“You are employed,” he said.“Give me your e-mail address and I'll send you the application to fill in, as well as date when you may start.”

The man left with no hope at all. With only ten dollars in his pocket, he decided to go to the supermarket and buy 10kg tomatoes. He then sold the tomatoes from door to door.In less than two hours, he succeeded to double his capital. He repeated the operation three times, and returned home happily with 60 dollars.
The man realized that he could survive in this way, and started to go every day early, and return late. Thus, his money doubled or tripled every day.Shortly, he bought a cart, then a truck, and then he had his own delivery vehicles.Five years later, the man was one of the biggest food retailers (零售商人)in the US.

You might think people all over the United States have Wi-Fi—wireless Internet service—and mobile phones. But there is no such service in Green Bank, West Virginia, a tiny town four hours from the U.S.capital, Washington D.C. Fewer than 150 people live in Green Bank, which has two churches, an elementary school and a public library. It is also home to the largest radio telescope in the world.
There is a ban on Wi-Fi in Green Bank, along with anything else that can create electromagnetic(电磁的)waves.Officials say the waves could disturb the signals the telescope receives.
For many Americans, a visit to Green Bank is a little like returning to the 1950s.To get there, you must read road signs—because there is no GPS service in the town.People can connect with the Internet through telephones, but wireless service is not allowed.
The observatory (天文台)is one of the largest employers in the area. The federal National Science Foundation(NSF)spends about $8.2 million a year to operate the observatory, telescope and educational center.
Jonah Bauserman is a technician. If he supposes there is signal that is not allowed in the zone, he drives to the house where the signal is coming from and checks it.But once a week, when the device is cleaned, some banned devices are allowed near it.
People in the town respect the work of the scientists. And they say they are happy to live without Wi-Fi and mobile phones.“You know, instead of sitting here on our phones and other devices we're out fishing and hunting and going to each other's houses.” Everyone knows each other and communication is almost always face-to-face.

Although many Chinese students say that their knowledge of English grammar is good, most would admit that their spoken English is poor.Whenever I speak to a Chinese student, they always say,“My spoken English is poor.” __36__ I would like to suggest that there may be some reasons for their problems with spoken English.
First, they fail to find suitable words to express themselves due to a limited vocabulary.__37__ However, you can speak with a limited vocabulary, if you choose a positive attitude.Others will follow you as long as you use the words that you know.
__38__Sometimes they make mistakes when they are speaking because they are shy and nervous.Yet students should remember that their goal should be FLUENCY NOT ACCURACY.Your aim in writing is to be accurate following the rules for grammar and using the right words and spelling them correctly. However, in speaking your aim is fluency. You want to get your message across, to talk to someone in English, as quickly and as well as you can, even though sometimes you may use a wrong word or tense, but it doesn't matter.__39__
The third reason is that not enough attention is paid to listening. You have one mouth but two ears! All that hearing is necessary for you to start speaking.
Fourth, most Chinese students are reactive rather than proactive (主动的)language learners.Instead of actively seeking out opportunities to improve their spoken English they passively wait for speaking opportunities to come to them and wonder why their English always remains poor.__40__.
A.The person you are speaking to will understand you and make allowances for any mistakes he hears.
B.Obviously the better answer is to expand their vocabulary.
C.They may try to avoid making similar mistakes next time.
D.If you have this proactive outlook, then you will see English opportunities wherever you go.
E.Second, they are afraid of making mistakes.
