Many of the world's most successful people were once successful failures. Here are the stories of a few of them.
Abraham Lincoln (1809~1865)
Abraham Lincoln was one of America's greatest leaders, taking the country through the Civil War (from 1860 to 1865).However, his life was never easy.He started numerous businesses that failed, he went bankrupt twice, and was defeated in 26 campaigns for public office. He later said,“My great concern is not whether you have failed, but whether you are content and satisfied with your failure.”
Vincent Van Gogh (1853~1890)
Van Gogh is one of the most famous and influential painters in the history of Western Art.He's famous for paintings such as The Starry Night, The potato Eaters and Sunflowers. However, during his lifetime, Van Gogh sold only one painting for a very small amount of money.Despite this, he carried on painting, sometimes even going without food so he could complete his collection of over 800 known works.
Albert Einstein (1879~1955)
Albert Einstein won the Noble Prize in Physics in 1921.However, he wasn't always considered a genius. He didn't speak until he was four, and couldn't read until he was seven. His teachers and parents thought he was slow, so he was driven from school and couldn't get into the Zurich Polytechnic School. He later famously said,“Success is failure in progress.”
Stephen King (1947~2018)
Stephen King is one of the best-selling authors of all time, but his first book, Carrie, was rejected by about 30 publishers. Finally, Stephen threw it into the bin, but his wife fished it out and encouraged him to resubmit it, which he did and succeeded this time!

A nine-year-old kid was sitting at his desk when suddenly there was a puddle (水潭、泥坑) between his feet and the front of his trousers was wet.He thought his heart was going to stop because he couldn't possibly imagine how this had happened. It had never happened before, and he knew that when the boys found out he would never hear the end of it.When the girls found out, they would never speak to him again as long as he lived.
He prayed this prayer,“Dear God, I need help now! Five minutes from now I'm dead meat!” He looked up from his prayer and here came the teacher with a look in her eyes that said he had been discovered. As the teacher was walking toward him, a classmate named Susie was carrying a goldfish bowl full of water.Susie tripped (绊倒) in front of the teacher and dumped (倒) the bowl of water in the boy's lap.The boy pretended to be angry, but all the while was saying to himself,“Thank you, Lord!”
Now all of a sudden, instead of being the object of ridicule, the boy was the object of sympathy. The teacher rushed him downstairs and gave him gym shorts to put on while his trousers dried out.All the other children were on their hands and knees cleaning up around his desk. The sympathy was wonderful. But as life would have it, the ridicule that should have been his had been transferred (转移) to someone else—Susie. She tried to help, but they told her to get out.

You can't imagine how terrible I felt at that time.A month before my first marathon, one of my ankles was injured and this meant not running for two weeks, leaving me only two weeks to train.Yet, I was determined to go ahead.
I remember back to my 7th year in school. In my first P.E. class, the teacher required us to run laps and then hit a softball.I didn't do either well.He later informed me that I was “not athletic”.
The idea that I was “not athletic” stuck with me for years. When I started running in my 30s, I realized running was a battle against myself, not about competition or whether or not I was athletic. It was all about the battle against my own body and mind.A test of wills!

Shortly after crossing the start line, my shoe laces(鞋带)became untied. So I stopped to readjust. Not the start I wanted!
At mile 3, I passed a sign:“GO FOR IT,RUNNERS!”
By mile 17, I became out of breath and the once injured ankle hurt badly.Despite the pain, I stayed the course walking a bit and then running again.
By mile 21, I was starving!
As I approached mile 23, I could see my wife waving a sign. She is my biggest fan.She never minded the alarm clock sounding at 4 a.m.or questioned my expenses on running.
I was one of the final runners to finish. But I finished! And I got a medal. In fact, I got the same medal as the one that the guy who came in first place had.

Diana Ross, American pop singer and actress, achieved international popularity, first as the leader singer of the Supremes and later as a solo(独唱的)artist.Diana Ross was born on March 26,1944, in Detroit, Michigan. She was the second of six children of Fred and Ernestine Ross, who lived in one of Detroit's poor districts.Because her family were closely connected with each other, Ross almost didn't notice the difficult life as she grew up.
Ross professional career began in 1959, when she joined several neighborhood friends to form the Primettes. The group was renamed the Supremes after signing a recording contract (合同)with Motown late the following year. The group produced many number-one hit singles (热门单曲)on the US Billboard hot 100, including Baby Love, Stop! In The Name of Love and Someday We Will Be Together. In 1967, the group was renamed Diana Ross and the Supremes, foreshadowing(预示) Ross'solo career, which she started in 1970.
Beginning with Ain't No Mountain High Enough from her first solo album, Ross enjoyed more than ten years of great success with her hit singles.Ross also developed a film-acting career in the 1970s, beginning with a starring role as blues singer Billie Holiday in Lady Sings the Blues and continuing with Mahogany, for which she also recorded the theme song Do You Know Where You're Going To.
However, in the mid-1980s, Ross saw her career begin to wane. Most of her albums were re-recordings of earlier material. In 2006, she produced I Love You, a collection of love songs by many artists, and she started an energetic concert tour the following year to make the album publicly known.Although you can't find her songs on the US Billboard Hot 100 now, Ross remains popular as one of the leading musical performers of all time.

Each year there is an increasing number of cars on roads and streets as millions of new cars and trucks are produced. One out of every six Americans works at putting together the parts of cars, driving trucks, building roads or filling cars and trucks with gas.Americans won't live without cars!
Most Americans would find it hard to think what life would look like without cars. However, some have realized the serious problems of the air pollution that is caused by the car.
The polluted air becomes poisonous and dangerous to health.
One way to get rid of the polluted air is to build a car that does not pollute. That's what several of the large car factories have been trying to do.But to build a clean car is easier said than done.Progress in this field has been slow.
Another way is to take the place of the car engine by something else.Inventors are now working on steam cars as well as electric cars. Many makers believe that it will take years to develop a practical model that pleases man.
To prevent the world from being polluted by cars, we'll have to make some changes in the way many of us live.Americans, for example, have to cut down on the number of their total cars. They are encouraged to travel and go to work by bicycle.Bicycling is thought to help keep the air clean.
But this change does not come easily.A large number of workers may find themselves without jobs if a car factory closes down. Thus the problem of air pollution would become less important than that of unemployment.
Although cars have led us to a better life, they have also brought us new problems.

解析:选D 细节理解题。根据第六段中的“cut down on the number of their total cars” 可知“美国人必须减少汽车总数”,与“每天限制道路上的车辆数量”是同义的。因此A与C是正确的。“They are encouraged to travel and go to work by bicycle.”可知“鼓励他们骑自行车旅行和上班。”,因此B是正确的。而D项(人们应该修建更多的道路,给汽车和卡车加油)显然不是改变我们生活方式以此来减少污染。故选D项。
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
In English, we have a saying that goes,“Use it or lose it.” It means that if you do not continue to use a skill, you might lose the ability to do so.
We can say this about language learning, including learning new words.__36__
Our reader Banin has a question today. Here is the question:how can I improve my vocabulary?
It is a great question! The answer will help many English learners. Here are four things you can do.
Read, read, read.
Read a lot! Look for new stories, websites, magazines and books on subjects that you enjoy. While reading, try to guess the meanings of new words from their context.__37__If there are television shows or films that you love in English, watch them with English subtitles to learn new words and hear how we say them.
Write about it.
But, don't just read.Write! A great way to practice what you read is to write about it.__38__Another thing you can write about is what you did today. If you spent time with a friend or family member, went to an event, had a delicious meal or did something else, write about it!
Learn word forms.
__39__When you learn a new word, learn its other forms. For example, the word “sleepy” is an adjective. But it has noun, verb and adverb forms. You can make a word form chart in a note book or wireless device and write a sentence example for each form.
__40__
Another powerful memory tool is word association:use your imagination to create mental images linked to new words. For example, when I say “tasty”, what food image do you see in your mind?Keep that food image in your mind and always mentally connect it to the word “tasty”.Then, the next time you try to remember the word “tasty”, the mental image will appear.
A.For example, if you read a web story about the best fitness apps of 2018, write about it.
B.Use word families.
C.If you do not use the new words often, you might forget them.
D.Writing can be a great way of properly learning the kind of vocabulary you need to describe your own life and interests.
E.Use word association.
F.Then, you can check the meanings in a paper dictionary or online.
G.Here's another great technique.
【解题导语】 这是一篇说明文。作者就如何提高词汇量提出了几点有效的方法。
36.解析:选C 由“We can say this about language learning, including learning new words.”可知,这也适用语言学习,包括学习新单词。所以空处是对上文“Use it or lose it.”在学习新单词中的具体解释。故C选项“如果你不经常使用这些新单词,你可能会忘记它们。”符合题意。故C选项切题。
37.解析:选F 由“While reading, try to guess the meanings of new words from their context.”可知,阅读时,试着从上下文中猜测生词的含义。既然是猜测的含义,就存在着错或者对,所以空处解释通过某种手段来核对含义是错还是对。故F选项“然后,你可以在纸质字典或在线上核对它的意思”符合题意。故F选项切题。
38.解析:选A 由“Another thing you can write about is what you did today. If you spent time with a friend or family member, went to an event, had a delicious meal or did something else, write about it!”可知,你可以写的另一件事是你今天所做的。如果你和朋友或家人一起度过一段时间,去参加一个活动,吃一顿美味的饭,或者做点别的事情,就写下来。所以我们判断出空处也应该是写的某个事情的具体内容。故A选项“例如,如果你读了一篇关于2018年最佳健身应用程序的网络故事,你就可以写下来。”符合题意。故A选项切题。
39.解析:选G 由“When you learn a new word, learn its other forms.”可知,当你学习一个新词时,学习它的其他形式。所以空处是为了介绍“当你学习一个新词时,学习它的其他形式”。故G选项“这有其他的好技巧”符合题意。故G选项切题。
40.解析:选E 由“Another powerful memory tool is word association ... the mental image will appear.”可知,另一个强大的记忆工具是单词联想……心理形象会出现。整个段落都在讲如何进行单词的联想。故E选项“使用单词的联想”符合题意。故E选项切题。
