I like watching TV very much for I think it has many advantages. First of all, watching TV is a good rest. After a day of hard work, we need a good rest. Watching TV can make our mind and body not tired any more because of the pleasant music and TV plays.
Besides, watching TV is entertaining. There are many kinds of entertainment, such as sports activities, singing and dancing concerts, plays and films all over the world at every time. It's not possible for us to go to every place to enjoy all the activities within a short time. We need at least over ten hours to fly from New York to Paris, a week by train from Beijing to Moscow and an hour to drive from Queens District to Manhattan District. But within just one second, TV can bring us from an NBA game in New York to a fashion show in Paris by changing the channels.
Most importantly, watching TV is educational. Our children can learn every kind of subjects through the educational programmes and the special reports on TV, and it's easy for them to learn Chinese from a Chinese teacher in Beijing and to learn Russian lessons from a Russian teacher in Moscow. Even we can learn how to behave well from the TV plays. Besides, a teacher can teach millions of students without a huge classroom.

The yearly Academy Awards ceremony was once a private affair. Now, because of television, it is very much a public affair. Hundreds of people gather in Hollywood to see the Oscars presented to outstanding(杰出的) actors, and others involved(参与) in the motion picture industry. Millions more watch on television.
It all began on May 16,1929, when 270 men and women sat down to dinner at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. There was no secret about the winners. The names of the winners had been known for months. Janet Gaynor, for example, had won as Best Actress. Douglas Fairbanks presented her with the famous gold statue(塑像).The little statue was not then called Oscar. Like a new actor,Oscar was unknown. About six years later, it somehow got that renowned name. A number of explanations have been offered for its origin(由来), but nobody knows the true story for certain.
Nowadays the results of the Oscar voting are kept secret. Only two people know the winners before the names are announced at the ceremony. The counting of votes is not done by one group of people but by different groups. Nobody except two members of an accounting(计票) company sees the final results.
The information is not kept in open files(卷宗).Winners' names are placed in closed envelopes. The accountants each carry a complete set of envelopes to the ceremony. One set is simply a spare to be used in case something happens to the other one.

Once upon a time, there was a beautiful bird, which was very curious about hell. When she was little, her mother always told her that if she didn't master the flying skills, she would go to hell. She was so curious about hell that she always asked others what hell looked like, but no one was sure, because none of them had ever been there. Some said hell was a place full of water, and others told her that hell was full of burning fire. However, the bird knew they were lying. She wanted to find out what hell was.
When other birds were learning flying skills, she always hid herself and watched them. She thought in this way she could go to hell and see what hell looked like. However, she spent so little time learning flying skills that one day she was caught by a little boy. The little boy gave her to his grandpa in the countryside as a gift. The old man liked her very much. He made a delicate cage and put her in it. The bird was very worried because she thought she couldn't find out what hell was like staying in this small cage. However, she couldn't escape. Day after day, she just stayed in the cage, watching other birds flying. She lost her freedom and she became sadder and sadder. At last, she became ill. The old man finally opened the cage, but she was too weak to fly. Lying on the ground, she thought of the question that she ever asked all the time.

“Hell is a small well-decorated cage.” Before she closed her eyes forever, she finally answered that question herself.

Insects(昆虫) are very healthy food. They have almost as much protein(蛋白质) as meat from a pig or cow and are low in fat. Eating insects is also very good for the environment since they need less land and water than larger animals.
Marcel Dicke, who studies insects, explained in a talk how insects also produce more meat from the food they eat. For example, imagine a farmer feeds a cow 10 pounds of food. Those 10 pounds of food produce about 1 pound of meat for people to eat. However, imagine the farmer gives a certain number of insects 10 pounds of food. Those 10 pounds of food produce 9 pounds of meat for people to eat!
Eating more insects can also help people in poor areas. Many people can raise and sell insects, which can provide jobs and food.
But insects will not replace animal meat very quickly. First, people in some countries should have to change how they think about eating insects. Many people in North America and Europe eat a lot of meat like beef and pork. But they do not traditionally eat insects. In fact, for many people in the west, eating insects sounds crazy! They believe insects are dirty and dangerous. Insects make them feel uncomfortable.
Some people are trying to deal with this problem. For example, David George Gordon wrote a book named The Eat-A-Bug Cook book, which tries to show people that insects can be delicious. Other insect experts travel around telling people about the benefits of eating insects. But they still have a lot of work to do.

5.The long way eating insects has to go mainly results from ________.
A.their terrible taste
B.people's old beliefs
C.family traditions
D.eating methods

I grew up in a house where the TV was seldom turned on and with one wall in my bedroom entirely lined with bookshelves, most of my childhood was spent on books I could get hold of.In fact,I grew up thinking of reading as natural as breathing and books unbelievably powerful in shaping perspectives(观点) by creating worlds we could step into, take part in and live in.
With this unshakable belief,I, at fourteen, decided to become a writer. Here too, reading became useful. Every writer starts off knowing that he has something to say, but being unable to find the right ways to say it.He has to find his own voice by reading widely and discovering which parts of the writers he agrees or disagrees with, or agrees with so strongly that it reshapes his own world. He cannot write without loving to read, because only through reading other people's writing can one discover what works, what doesn't and, in the end, together with lots of practice, what voice he has.
Now I am in college, and have come to realize how important it is to read fiction(文学作品). As a law student, my reading is in fact limited to subject matter—the volume(量) of what I have to read for classes every week means there is little time to read anything else.Such reading made it all the clearer to me that I live in a very small part in this great place called life.Reading fiction reminds me that there is life beyond my own.It allows me to travel across the high seas and along the Silk Road, all from the comfort of my own armchair, to experience, though second-hand, exciting experiences that I wouldn't necessarily be able to have in my lifetime.

Parents are fighting for their children's right to rest across the country.Twenty-three elementary schools in Orange County,Florida, have been cutting back on rest, and even canceling it to increase class time.
In a recent Orange County School Board meeting, parents demanded that rest time be carried out in all local schools for all students. Angela Browning, a parent in the area, said that schools' rest is ranging from zero to 30 minutes per day.
“Five-year-olds not getting rest means abuse,” said Browning, whose twins in the second grade benefit from taking a break and learn better.
“The main reason for reducing the rest time is Common Core exams including math, language arts and literacy, where the students' performance often controls teachers' pay and sometimes teachers may lose their jobs. Many teachers are using that extra 20 minutes that would have been spent on the schools' scores; everybody is stressful,” said Diana Moore, president of the Orange County Classroom Teachers Association.
The requirement of whether reducing rest takes place, and for how long is up to each school's rule.“Florida law requires that districts provide 900 teaching hours during the school year,” Florida's Department of Education press secretary Cheryl Etters said in a statement.“Whether rest is part of the school day is a choice made by the school board.”
Reducing rest also can take away an opportunity for children to learn social skills, according to many experts.“In society, who cares if you have straight A's and you get a scholarship (奖学金) to Harvard if you lack social skills?” said Mallet, a mother of two children.
【解题导语】 学校为了提高学生的分数而缩短学生的休息时间,家长们对此提出了强烈抗议。
28.What will Angela Browning agree with?
A.Kids of five years old had better get more break time.

D.Elementary schools should limit kids' rest time to 30 minutes.

29.What drives so many teachers to reduce students' rest time?
A.Parents' demand.
B.Students' lack of social skills.
C.Students' bad behavior.
D.The link between their pay and the schools' scores.
解析:选D 细节理解题。根据第四段中的“...where the students' performance often controls teachers' pay and sometimes teachers may lose their jobs.”可知,学生的成绩和老师的薪水挂钩,所以很多老师减少了学生的休息时间。故选D项。
30.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.Social skills are more important than high scores.
B.Whether students get A's in school is very important.
C.Graduates from Harvard can't find good jobs.
D.Rest time has nothing to do with students' social skills.
解析:选A 推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“In society, who cares if you have straight A's and you get a scholarship(奖学金) to Harvard if you lack social skills?”可知,社会技能比分数更重要。故选A项。
31.What's the main idea of the text?
A.The government is to order schools to increase rest time.
B.Students expect to get more time to play in school.
C.Parents struggle for the rest right for their kids in school.
D.Teachers' pay is related to their performance in teaching.

Before you make friends, you have to decide who you want to be your friends. Most people like to have friends who like to do the same thing they do.
The quickest way to make a friend is to smile. When you smile, people think you are friendly and easy to talk to. It may not be easy at first to smile, but remember most people will stay away from a scared (害怕的) or angry looking face.
One easy way to start a conversation with someone is to say something nice about him. Think about how great you feel when someone says something nice to you. Doesn't it make you want to keep talking to that person?
Ask your new friends questions about themselves. Who's their favorite singer, where do they live, what do they do after school are all good questions to start a conversation. Make sure you have something to add to the conversation, too. When someone asks you a question, do have an answer for them. There’s nothing that will stop a conversation quicker than a shrug for an answer.
Kids who show an interest in other kids and who are kind and friendly make good friends. Remember, everyone wants to be around people who like to do similar (相似的) things and people who are nice to them.
