(2019·周口高二检测)
Since the 800's,November 1st is a holiday known as All Saints' Day. The evening before is known as All Hallowe'en or Halloween. During the festival, poor people would beg for food and families would give them “soul cakes” in return for their promise to pray for the family's dead relatives.
Halloween, however, has a special meaning for children today, who dress in funny or ghostly clothes and knock at neighborhood doors shouting “Trick or Treat!” Princesses, ghosts and witches all hold bags open to catch the candies or cakes that the neighbors drop in.
Today school dances and neighborhood parties called “block parties” are popular among young and old. They dress up as historical or political figures and go to costume parties. Teenagers enjoy costume dances at their schools and the more outrageous_the costume is the better it is!
Certain tricks such as soaping car windows and knocking at the neighbors' windows are expected. But parties and tricks are not the only things that Halloweeners enjoy doing. Some collect money to buy food and medicine for poor children around the world.
Halloween began as a celebration concerned with bad spirits. Black is one of the traditional Halloween colors, probably because Halloween festivals and traditions take place at night. Pumpkins are also a symbol of Halloween. Carving pumpkins into Jack-o'-lanterns is a Halloween custom originating in Ireland. When the Irish brought their customs to the United States, they carved faces on pumpkins instead of turnips (蔓菁)because in the autumn pumpkins were more plentiful than turnips. Today Jack-o'-lanterns in the windows of a house on Halloween night let costumed children know that there are candies waiting if they knock and say “Trick or Treat!”

It's carnival season in Europe,a crazy time for parades, masks, music and dance. No one is sure where the tradition exactly comes from. But while its origin remains a mystery, this does not keep people from joining it.
The Carnival of Binche, the most famous one that is staged in Belgium, has been announced as a masterpiece of the Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. The event usually takes place during a Sunday,Monday, and Tuesday, with performers known as “Gilles” dressed in clown-like costumes, dancing and marching (行进)along the streets. During the parade, the Gilles throw oranges to the crowd as an act of well-wishing and it is considered rude to throw them back.
Venice is said to be the birthplace of carnivals. In the city, the annual carnival starts 58 days before Easter. It features various brightly-colored and well-made masks. Every year, thousands of visitors go to the city to be part of the festive event.
The Germans, always considered serious-minded,also have their carnivals. The Cologne Carnival is one of the largest, with Rose Monday as the best part. On Rose Monday Parade, lots of gifts are prepared for the people who join it. For this year, 300 tons of candies and more than 300, 000 souvenirs were thrown out of the various nicely-decorated floats (花车)to the crowd.
The Nice Carnival in the southern French city of Nice lasts two or three weeks from February to March every year. It features floats, music, dance performances and entertainment activities. The parade of lights and the final day carnival parade are the most exciting parts of the entire event. Compared to the Rio Carnival in Brazil and the Winter Carnival in Quebec,Canada, the Nice Carnival has a special artistic touch, and it is one of the three major carnivals around the world.
Carnivals were first organized in the Middle Ages. They were supposed to be a time of eating and drinking before the Easter fast (斋戒).Nowadays, they have been turned into winter tourism attractions for many European cities.

When I was a boy we used to live across the road from a big hill with huge oak trees growing out of it. When winter arrived, thick and heavy snow would fall, and my two brothers would grab their sleds heading over to the hill for a day of fun. I remember watching them with envy because I was still too small to go sledding. Finally, one winter I was considered big enough and joined my brothers as they carried their sleds up the long hill and prepared to ride down it.
The first few trips I rode with one of my brothers had the time of my life. It was so exhilarating when the wind whipped across my face as I flew down the hillside on the wooden sled. Near the end of the day I was too overjoyed when my oldest brother decided to let me try riding the sled all by myself. I climbed on it full of excitement and lay on my stomach. Then with one big push my brother sent me down the snowy hillside. I was doing pretty well too until I hit an old stump hidden by the snow and went off course, straight towards one of those big oak trees. My heart pounded in my chest and I could hear myself screaming. At the last possible second I rolled off and the sled crashed into the tree. I could hear my brothers running down the hill yelling, “You have to steer(操控)!You have to steer!”
Sadly, that wasn't the last time I failed to steer when some obstacle knocked me off course in my life. Many times problems, troubles, and my own failures have sent me crashing into the trees of anger, frustration, and despair. I am still learning that life isn't always safe sledding. I am still learning that it is up to me to steer myself back to love, back to kindness, back to goodness, and back to God.
Life is a trip, but no one ever said it was a smooth ride. Steer well then. Steer straight. Steer your soul towards the light and the love that are all meant for us.

7.Why did the author fall off his sled?
A.Because his sled crashed into an oak tree.
B.Because he lost control of his sled.
C.Because his brother pushed it so hard.

8.What does the author mean to tell us?
A.Losing control of a sled can be dangerous.
B.Courage and determination can change one's life.
C.Life can be controlled by oneself.

People in the United States honour their parents with two special days:Mother's Day,on the second Sunday in May,and Father's Day,on the third Sunday in June.
Mother's Day was proclaimed a day for national observance by President Woodrow Wilson in 1914. Anna Jarvis from Grafton,West Virginia, had started the idea to have a day to honour mothers. She was the one who chose the second Sunday in May and also began the custom of wearing a carnation.
In 1909,Mrs. Dodd from Spokane,Washington, thought of the idea of a day to honour fathers. She wanted to honour her own father,William Smart. After her mother died,he had the responsibility of raising a family of five sons and a daughter. In 1910,the first Father's Day was observed in Spokane. Senator Margaret Chase Smith helped to establish Father's Day as a national commemorative day,in 1972.
These days are set aside to show love and respect for parents. They raise their children and educate them to be responsible citizens. They give love and care.
These two special days are celebrated in many different ways. On Mother's Day people wear carnations. A red one symbolizes a living mother. A white one shows that the mother is dead. Many people attend religious services to honour parents. It is also a day when people whose parents are dead visit the cemetery. On these days families get together at home,as well as in restaurants. They often have outdoor barbecues for Father's Day. These are days of fun and good feelings and memories.

When I was about ten years old, I was walking down the street with my mother. She stopped to speak to Mr. Lee, and I knew I could see Mr. Lee any time around the neighborhood, so I didn't pay any attention to him. After we passed Mr. Lee, my mother stopped me and said something that has stuck with me from that day until now. She said, “You let that be the last time you've ever walked by somebody and not opened up your mouth to speak, because even a dog will wag its tail when it passes you on the street. ” Mother's words sound simple, but it's been a guidepost for me and the foundation of who I am.
It's not just something I believe in;it's become a way of life. I believe that every person deserves to feel someone acknowledge their presence, no matter how humble (卑鄙的)they may be.
At work, I always said hello to the founder of the company and asked him how our business was doing. But I also spoke to the people who cleaned the buildings and asked how their children were doing. After a few years of greeting the founder, I had the courage to ask him for a meeting. We had a great talk. At a certain point I asked him how far he thought I could go in his company. He said, “If you want to, you can get all the way to this seat. ”
I've become vice-president, but that hasn't changed the way I approach people. I still follow my mother's advice. I speak to everyone I see, no matter where I am. I've learned that speaking to people creates a pathway into their world, and it allows them to come into mine, too.

Mia has a brother. ??Though both children can speak, their parents are deaf. Therefore, sign language has become an important way for them to communicate.
They can talk with friends by speech and then use sign language to talk with their parents. This made them become the masters of two languages. And they are not the only ones. Many deaf parents found that teaching sign language to young children is good. Before they are able to say words correctly, many of them can use their hands to communicate with their parents.

One of the traditions which are now a necessary part of Christmas is that of Father Christmas, or Santa Claus. According to the modern legend, he is a magical figure who visits all the children of the world during the night before Christmas Day, leaving presents which they find the next morning. He flies through the night sky in a sledge pulled by reindeer, and enters houses by climbing down chimneys. This strange legend is based on the life of a man called Nicholas, but in fact we know very little about him. Historians think he was a Christian bishop(主教)in Turkey in about 285~350 A.D. One of the stories about him is that he helped three poor girls. No one would marry them because they were so poor. To provide them with money for their weddings, Nicholas secretly dropped some gold coins down the chimney of their house. After Nicholas died, he was made a saint(圣人)by the church. The name Santa Claus thus comes from St Nicholas. His feast day was celebrated in December, and parents started giving their children secret presents from St Nicholas. Over the years, this custom became part of our Christmas traditions.
Recently, a psychologist has claimed that Father Christmas is the perfect fantasy for children. According to Professor Anthony Clare, children love the character of Father Christmas because he is like an ideal father: he loves children and gives them presents, but he never criticizes them, is never angry, and children do not even need to thank him for the presents. Other writers, however, point out that Father Christmas can be a frightening character to some children. Jane Bidder says that some children are terrified of this fat, bearded old man. It can certainly confuse many children. As parents, we warn our children to be careful of strangers and never let them into the house, and yet we tell children that a strange man will come into their bedroom at night! Some children can become very worried about this idea and fear that he is a kind of burglar.
Most children, however, understand from their parents and from the media that Father Christmas is basically a benign character, and look forward to his annual visit with joy and excitement.

We all have four to six dreams per night. But why do some people seem to remember their dreams while others don't?
People who report that they have good dream recollection are more likely, than others who don't,to have been woken up during a stage of sleep referred to as REM(rapid eye movement). This is the stage of sleep where dreams occur, and if you're woken up during it you may recall the dream you were having more readily.
Light sleepers who are woken up very easily by the slightest sound tend to report having many more dreams they can remember than heavy sleepers who can nod off during thunder and lightning and do not know they've been dreaming at all. Therefore one way to remember your dreams is to set an alarm to go off frequently during the night,as you'll have more chances of waking during REM sleep. However, doing this exercise regularly will be bad for your sleeping pattern, and may mess with your body clock.
Interestingly, some people have the ability to dream to order,to a degree. If they focus on thinking about remembering their dreams, get a dream journal ready to write in and place it by their bed at night and tell themselves they will write down their dreams upon waking, they're more likely to actually produce a memorable dream.
Studies have shown us that during dreams we often play out different scenarios (情节)and our brains work out how to deal with them, should they actually occur in waking life. Thus,if you dreamed you lost your car keys and needed to find another way of getting to your destination, this could just be your mind working out what you would do in the future if this happened to you. The reason why people don't always remember dreams is that it would interfere (干扰)with waking life. An overload of information which may not be necessary could confuse your daily thinking, and lead you to perform less well. However, storing information away in your mental filing system located in your subconscious (潜意识),in case you ever need it,is far more efficient.

A.Sleepers are hard to wake up during REM sleep.
B.People who can't remember their dreams don't have REM sleep.
C.Both light sleepers and heavy sleepers can experience REM sleep.
D.People who are woken up during REM sleep will forget their dreams.
33.Which group of people are most likely to forget their dreams?
A. People who are ready to write a dream journal.
B.People who desire to find a solution in their dreams.
C.People who set an alarm to go off frequently during the night.
D.People who are hard to be disturbed by surrounding sounds during sleep.
解析:选D 推理判断题。根据第三段 “Therefore one way to remember your dreams is to set an alarm to go off frequently during the night,as you'll have more chances of waking during REM sleep. ”可排除C项;根据第四段 “If they focus on thinking about remembering their dreams...they're more likely to actually produce a memorable dream. ”可知,当人们有意识地想要记住梦境时,通常能如愿,可排除A、B两项;而睡觉时不易被周围声音打扰的人,很少有可能在REM阶段醒来,因而更易忘记梦境。
34.From the last sentence,we can infer that ________.
A. effective ways need to be developed to fully make use of our dreams
B.people who regularly forget their dreams will never know their mind well
C.scientists will give us much deeper explanations for what our dreams mean
D.those forgotten dreams are stored in our brain and will be remembered if needed
35.The passage mainly discusses ________.
A.how important dreams are to health
B.the reason why people forget their dreams
C.the relationship between one's dream and sleep
D.different stages of sleep and people's changes in each one
解析:选B 主旨大意题。根据文章首段可知,本文主要向读者解释了人们为什么会忘记梦的内容。

One possible version:
Dear Tom,
Thank you for your letter. You have said you want to know something about Chinese festivals. And now I'd like to talk about the Lantern Festival.
The Lantern Festival is on the fifteenth day after the Chinese lunar New Year. It can date back to the Han Dynasty. And in the Qing Dynasty, it developed to be the largest one. There are quite a lot of traditions for this day. On this festival, we Chinese often enjoy lanterns, eating yuanxiao and row land boats, etc.
As a traditional festival, it has profound meaning in China. It is the first day when the moon is full round in the Chinese lunar calendar, and it's also the beginning of the year when spring starts. By celebrating the festival, people also celebrate the lasting of the New Year.
Lovely Yours,
Li Hua
