The Olympic Games are the greatest festival of sport in the world. Every four years,a hundred or more countries send their best sportsmen to compete for the highest honours of the sport. As many as 6,000 people take part in over 20 sports. For the winners, there are gold medals and glory. But there is honour, too, for all who compete, win or lose. That is the spirit of the Olympics—to take part in the Games is what matters.
The Olympic Games always start in bright colour and action. The teams of all the nations parade in the opening ceremony and march round the track. The custom is for the Greek team to march in first. For it was in Greece that the Olympics began. The team of the country where the Games are being held—the host country—marches in last.
The runner with the Olympic torch then enters the stadium and lights the flame. A sportsman from the host country takes the Olympic oath(宣誓)on behalf of all the competitors. The judges and officials also take an oath.
The competition begins the next day. There are usually more than twenty sports in the Games. The rule is that there must be at least fifteen. The main events are in track and field, but it is a few days before these sports start. Each day the competitors take part in a different sport-riding,shooting,swimming,and cross-country running. Points are gained for each event. Medals are awarded for the individual winners and for national teams.
More and more women are taking part in the games. They first competed in 1900,in tennis and golf. Women's swimming events were introduced in 1912. But it was not until 1928 that there were any track and field events for women. Now,they compete in all but half a dozen of the sports. In horse riding, shooting, and boat racing, they may compete in the same events as the men.

Aerial(空中的)performer Jennifer Bricker was born without legs, but she never let it stop her.
Wrapped in a loop (圈)of red silk hung from the ceiling, Jennifer Bricker climbs and twists to the music. Her head hangs down and her strong arms let go as she balances on her back, high above the ground—a move that is all the more daring because she has no legs.
Jennifer was a few months old when she was adopted by Sharon and Gerald Bricker. She had big brown eyes, a bright smile, and huge amounts of energy. When a doctor advised her adoptive parents to carry her around in a kind of bucket(桶), they refused.
Jennifer soon learned to walk—and run—on her hands and bottom, and grew up fearlessly climbing trees and bouncing on the trampoline (蹦床)with her three older brothers. “My parents didn't treat me differently so I didn't grasp the concept that I was different. I knew I didn't have legs but that wasn't stopping me from doing the things I wanted to do. ”
At the age of three she was fitted with artificial legs, but she never really took to them—she moved more freely without them.
In 1996 the Olympic Games took place in Atlanta. Jennifer loved to watch the women's gymnastics team, and especially adored the 14-year-old Dominique Moceanu who competed for the US. When Moceanu and the women's team won the gold, Jennifer decided she was going to be a gymnast, too. She took up power tumbling, which involves performing floor exercises down a runway. But Jennifer did not want any allowances to be made for her disability.
At the age of 10 she took part in the Junior Olympics and by age 11 she was the tumbling champion for the state of Illinois.
Jennifer now travels the world as an inspirational speaker and acts as an aerial performer.

I am a long distance runner. When I was thirty one, I was in a serious car accident. The doctors told me that they would try to get me to walk “normally” but I would never run again—terrible news for someone who views running as the oxygen she breathes. The doctors were right. For the next nine and a half years, I was unable to run more than twenty-five feet.
In 2006,I began self-training to take part in a 60-mile walk. Three months into preparing, I realized that walking 4~5 hours a day was too long. If only I could jog part of it—that would cost me less time. I started jogging without my knees aching. Slowly, I increased the distance. The doctors were proved wrong—it only took nine and a half years to do so.
While practicing, I suffered a loss—a dear friend suddenly died. His work had been to help women to accept themselves and reach their fullest potential. He believed that people should let nothing hold them back from achieving their goals. Soon after his death, a crazy thought entered my mind:what if I could run the LA Marathon?I knew that if I didn't train to my fullest, the doctors would win. So I trained seven days a week. And I succeeded in crossing the finish lines of many marathons all over the United States to the astonishment of my doctors. They never believed I would achieve that.
The aches and pains I experience while training and racing are nothing compared to the suffering people whom I respect must accept.

Football, to me, is more than just a game. I have probably learned more valuable lessons from it than from school.
When I joined the team freshman year, I didn't realize what I was getting into. Even though I had been playing since fourth grade and knew it was hard work, nothing would prepare me for the effort I would put into football that year. We worked all summer in the weight room and ran on the track to get in physical and mental shape before the season.
See, football is more of a mental sport than anything else, so running on the track wasn't only about getting_in_shape. We would push our minds by running as hard as we could even if we were going to pass out. At the beginning, I was immature(幼稚)and only thought of myself, sometimes even gave up when I was tired or hurt. Then after the third game I had a season-ending injury. Imagine working all summer and then only being able to play three games!I needed surgery on my arm and at least five months to recover.
Needless to say, I missed the rest of the season, but this actually helped me realize that since you never know when your last play will be, you should try your hardest in football and life.
After freshman year I decided that I would always give my best effort. Playing varsity(校队的)football has taught me so much more than just what my assignments are on a particular play or how to block. I have learned to think about others first, and realized how important working hard is. Being with all my friends, even sweating and bleeding with them, really made us bond as a group of hard-working young men who I know will succeed in life.

While most school-aged kids are returning to classes with stories of summer hiking and camping,a 9-year-old boy in northern Michigan is sharing the story of how he broke a world record.
Braden Dubois,a student at Inland Lakes Elementary, was able to set a new world record this summer as the youngest stock car driver on the planet. According to The World Record Academy,Dubois has met the requirements to officially become the world's youngest stock car racer.
“When my father told me that I had a chance to set the record,I wanted to go for it,” Braden said.
Braden's parents,Krista and Jim Dubois, own the Onaway Speedway and made it possible for Braden to race by allowing him to compete in the 12-year-old age class. Having long been racing fans, the couple purchased the speedway about three years ago and said they enjoyed running it with their family.
“I was a little nervous about him racing at first,” Krista said. “Once Jim worked with him and I saw how safe and responsible he was I felt much better. ”
Krista said the safety gear(装置)they had installed(安装)in Braden's car is very similar to the equipment used in Nascar races. Braden drives a 1996 Chevy Cavalier, with a four-cylinder(汽缸)engine. The car was purchased for him to race in and is the car he drove to set the record, completing the whole season.
“I spun out a couple of times in it,” Braden said. “The first time I was frightened, but I get used to it. ”

Most young people enjoy some forms of physical activities. It may be walking, cycling or swimming,or in winter, skating or skiing. It may be a game of some kind, football, hockey, golf,or tennis;it may be mountaineering.
Those who have a passion for climbing high and difficult mountains are often looked upon with astonishment. Why are men and women willing to suffer cold and hardship, and to take risks on high mountaineering? This astonishment is caused probably by the difference between mountaineering and other forms of activity to which men give their leisure.
Mountaineering is a sport and not a game. There are no man-made rules,as there are for such game as golf and football. There are,of course, rules of a different kind, which would be dangerous to ignore, but it is this freedom from man-made rules that makes mountaineering attractive to many people. Those who climb mountains are free to use their own methods.
If we compare mountaineering with other more familiar sports,we might think that one big difference is that mountaineering is not a “game”.We would be mistaken in this assumption. There are,it is true,no “matches” between “teams” of climbers, but when climbers are on a rock face linked by a rope on which their lives may depend, there is obviously teamwork.
The mountain climber knows that he may have to fight forces that are stronger and more powerful than man. He has to fight the forces of nature. His sport requires high mental and physical capacities.
A mountain climber continues to improve in skill year after year. A skier is probably past his prime by the age of thirty, and most international tennis champions are in their early twenties. But it is not unusual for a man of fifty or sixty to climb the highest mountains in the Alps. They may take more time than younger men,but they probably climb with more skill and less wasted effort, and they certainly experience enjoyment.

The effects of coffee consumption on health have long been a subject of conflict and uncertainty. Since the 1980s, some have spoken out against coffee as it's harmful to health, while others have welcomed coffee for its supposed benefits to health.
According to a scientific report, mild coffee consumption, three to five cups per day, can be taken as a healthy dietary pattern, along with other healthful behavior. The report also says that coffee consumption helps reduce the risk of heart disease and it protects against Parkinson's disease.
According to Dr. Donald Hensrud of Mayo Clinic, high consumption of coffee has health risks. Dr. Hensrud mentions the dangers of high coffee consumption for people with a certain illness that slows the breakdown of caffeine in the body. Some studies said that drinking two or more cups of coffee daily can actually increase the risk of heart disease in these people.
According to conclusions from a recent study led by Dr. Gregory Marcus, a doctor from the University of California, San Francisco, daily moderate consumption of caffeine, less than 4 cups, is not associated with these issues.
Until the scientific community reaches a general agreement on the effects of coffee consumption on human health, it will be up to the individual to decide whether the benefits of drinking coffee are greater than the risks.
When informed of these possible health benefits and harm of drinking coffee, Harwood, a high school student stated, “Even though there might be some negative effects of drinking coffee, for the most part, coffee drinking sounds good for health. Not to mention I need coffee to stay awake. ”

A.He'll keep on drinking coffee.

Yesterday, my wife and I take our four kids out to a local cafe to celebrating our 9-year-old son's birthday. We had a lovely meal, but when we asked for the bill, we surprised to know that a couple who had been sitting near to us had already paid for our meal and left. It was a beautifully gesture which meant a lot to us. We'd love to be able to say thank you in persons, but that probably wasn't which they wanted. Perhaps sharing this story is only the small way to say thanks. The experience has led with some great discussions with our kids about kindness and generosity. And it has also given her a chance to think about other ways we can give them back.
