Ⅲ.阅读理解
Following the crowd may not always be in a person's best interest. But new research suggests that teens who get along with their friends may end up healthier as adults.
Scientists have known that close friendships help boost health. That's true for both teens and adults. The finding inspired Joseph Allen, a psychologist at the University of Virginia, and his team to study whether experiences during teen years would influence adult health.
So they followed 171 teens, starting when the kids were just 13. They interviewed each one every year for five years, and also spoke to these teens' closest friends, who provided additional information about the quality of their friendships. The same 171 people were interviewed again at ages 25, 26 and 27. This time, the questions surveyed each person's overall health. When the researchers analyzed the data, they found a strong connection between a teen's behavior and adult health. Teens who had close friends grew up to be the healthier adults. Whether teens held back their feelings or expressed them to close friends also influenced later health. Those who held back their feelings were more likely to be sick as adults. The connection held up even after the scientists accounted for other possible influences on health.Weight, family income and drug use were all examined. So were mental health issues, such as anxiety and depression. And in these people, such other factors did not explain adult health as well as teen friendships did.
Getting along with the crowd may have benefits, says Allen, but there are also drawbacks. Teens who are more independent tend to do better at school and work. And peer pressure may lead some kids to engage in risky behavior, such as smoking, drinking or using drugs. Dealing with it is an ongoing challenge,Allen acknowledges. “Finding the right balance is the key. Teens shouldn't lose heart for not finding this easy.”And, he adds,“Parents need to be understanding about the pressures teens face.”

A.many other factors have a greater influence on adult health than teen friendships
B.mental health issues have nothing to do with adult health
C.the same 171 teens were interviewed each year from 13 to 27
D.the teens who couldn't express themselves grew up to be unhealthier
解析:选D 细节理解题。根据第三段中的“Whether teens held back...sick as adults.”可知,青少年是否向他们的好朋友表达情感也会影响到其成年后的健康,那些压抑情感的青少年成年后很可能不健康。故D项正确。
3.According to what Allen said, we can know that________.

B.Close friendships are the most important for people's health.
C.Teen friendships may help teens become healthier adults.

When I was a boy there were no smart phones, and our television only got one channel clearly. Still,I was never bored. The fields, hills, and woodlands around my home were the perfect playground.I can remember once hiking to a nearby lake.At the backside of it I was amazed to find an old dirt road that I had never seen before. It was full of muddy tracks and deep woods bordered it on both sides, but exploring it still seemed like a fine adventure.
I walked on and on for hours.I was sure my guardian angel was whispering in my ear “Turn around and head back home”,but I was stubborn,so I walked on.There was still neither a car nor a house in sight.I noticed that the sun was starting to go down and I grew scared.I didn't want to end up trapped on this road, and I was worried that it would be dark before I could make my way back to the lake again.
I continued to walk on with something growing inside of me.My heart was pounding and my legs were aching.I was almost in tears when I turned one last curve and saw something in the distance. It was a house that I recognized.I jumped up and down and laughed out loud.It was still over a mile away but my legs felt like feathers and I hurried back to my house in no time.I walked in with a big smile on my face just in time for dinner.
I remembered this recently when I saw a sign that said “All roads lead home”.It is true.In life, all roads,no matter how they twist and turn, can lead us home again. What is important, though,is how we travel them. Are we going to go forth in fear or are we going to go forth in faith? Are we going to make this life a terrible trip or are we going to make this life a joyful journey? The choice is ours.

We have most friends at the age of 26 after having spent the first quarter of our lives building up our friendship circle,a new research has claimed.
The research into friendship shows that our social circle peaks at 26 years and 7 months,at which we typically have five close friends. Women are most popular at 25 years and 10 months, with men hitting the highest friendship point a little later at 27 years and 3 months.
The research,by Forever Friends, shows that about a third of adults meet their closest friends while at school, with about a fifth saying they meet them at work.
Social networks such as Facebook and Twitter now also play a major role in building new friendship. The research points out that 25 to 34-year-olds make 22 friends via Facebook, compared to 18 to 24-year-olds who make 12,and 35 to 44-year-olds who make just four.
Forever Friends' relationship coach Sam Owen says:“It is no coincidence that over a third of us meet our best friends at school. It is a key time in our lives when friendship is growing through sharing notes, giving gifts, seeing each other regularly and laughing a lot. As adults we can often forget how powerful these small things are and how the little things can make a difference.”
Later in life we find ourselves losing friends. Over half of us lose friendship through moving, while 36% say that over time they grow apart from close pals. Having children also causes 19% to drift_away_from childhood friends.
With growing pressures being pat on friendship these days,it's important to make time for our friendship.

They are Wellman, whose legs were permanently injured nine years ago in a rock-climbing accident, and Corbett, an experienced rock climber.Together, they climbed up Half Dome, the famous 2,000 foot rock in the Yosemite National Park, through one of the most difficult routes (路线).
During the climb, Corbett took the lead, hit in the metal spikes (尖状物) that guided the ropes and climbed up.Then, after Wellman pulled himself up the rope, Corbett went down to remove the spikes and climbed up again. This process was repeated time and again, inch by inch, for 13 days.
Wellman's job was not easy either. He got himself up the rope through upper body strength alone. In all, Wellman figured that he had done 5,000 pull-ups up the rope on the climb.
However, when the two men first met, they never talked about climbing.“He knew that was how I got injured,” Wellman said.Until one day Wellman decided that he wanted to climb again and they started training.
Their climb of Half Dome was not all smooth. At one point, pieces of rock gave way, and Corbett dropped down quickly.Wellman locked their rope in place, stopping the fall at 20 feet. His quick action probably saved his friend's life.
“Your partner can save your life—you can save your partner's life,” Wellman said as the pair received congratulations from friends.“There are real close ties.”
【解题导语】 友谊能克服困难,甚至挽救生命。Wellman和Corbett的攀岩经历很好地印证了友谊之珍贵。

A.To climb up to remove the spikes.
B.To climb it twice.
C.To do 5,000 pull-ups up the rope.

D.a man can be destroyed but cannot be defeated

When going through major life changes, like changing careers, I would change the people with whom I spent the most time. We've all gone through periods when the people in our lives have changed—graduation, moving to a new city, getting a new job, joining a new club, etc. I don't think I need to convince you just how much influence other people can have over your identity. If you've ever experienced a major switch in your people environment, then you know that you change as well.
Most people don't make these choices consciously (意识到地) though. You might consciously decide to spend more time with a certain friend, or you may ask someone out on a date to begin a new relationship. But few people choose their existing friendships deliberately.
There's_no_“getting_rid_of_people”.People are always dropping into and out of each other's lives. Associations grow into friendships, and friendships fade into associations. You don't get rid of anyone. The truth is that in order to make room for new people and new experiences, you may need to loosen up some of your existing connections.
What about loyalty(忠诚)? Shouldn't you always be loyal to your friends? Once you have a close friend, even if their influence on you is slightly harmful, shouldn't you stick by them?
Loyalty to a friend sometimes means having to let go.It means being loyal to their highest and best self as well. If someone is destroying his health by smoking, for example, you aren't showing loyalty by smoking right along with him.True loyalty sometimes requires that you break damaging connections, get yourself back on solid ground, and then decide what you can really do to help your friend.
It can take a lot of courage to tell someone,“I'm sorry, but I can't have you in my life anymore.”But even though this might seem like a selfish act at times, it's often the best thing for the other person too. If a relationship is holding you back in some way, understand that it's also hurting the other person. For example, if you work for a violent boss, your acceptance of that situation is considered to be silent approval, encouraging your boss to continue to behave violently.

6.What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Everyone has at least one friend.
B.It is unnecessary to make new friends.

解析:选C 句意理解题。根据画线句后的“People are always dropping into and out of each other's lives. Associations grow into friendships, and friendships fade into associations. You don't get rid of anyone...you may need to...existing connections.”可知,尽管人们之间的联系少了,但友谊依然存在。故选C项。
7.What is the author's opinion on the loyalty to friends?

Friendship
Friendship is a kind of human relations. Friendship to our life is what salt to dishes. When in trouble, we need friends to offer us help, support and encouragement. With success achieved, we also need friends to share our joys. Friendship is one of the greatest pleasures that we can enjoy.
When we get on with our friends, it's natural that we have different opinions. If so, what should we do? Quarrels can't solve the problem and tolerance is not a good way. Only by reasoning can we convince our friends completely.
In my opinion, to gain true friendship, we have to stick to the principle of making friends who are honest and reliable. That is to say, a friend should be trusted and depended upon.

The first school morning of the year may be difficult. But if you don't get an efficient school morning as the kids go back to school, it may not get better later in the school year. ?These tips will help you and your children have a good start. First, wake up early. On the first day back to school, start fifteen minutes earlier than you think you need. This goes for both parents and the kids. Wake-up time is directly related to bedtime, especially with younger kids. So you may want an early bedtime, too. ?Second, get everything done the night before. Do everything that can be done the night before, such as preparing clothes, planning breakfast, collecting books, doing homework and other things. This probably includes showers and baths, especially if your kids need help. Third, don't have breakfast in a hurry. Ask kids what they want for breakfast the night before and plan out breakfast ideas. ?A simple breakfast is enough.

Dear Dee,
It is surprising to read a letter from somebody who takes responsibility for a terrible relationship with her mom. Often we prefer to blame others rather than admit any fault in ourselves. Recognizing the problem is the first step to change—so you are well on your way to improving the relationship with your mom.
It is worth asking yourself whether there are some unsolved issues from your past. Did she hurt or disappoint you in any major way? Are you holding anything against her? Sometimes an old wound that hasn't healed(愈合) can cause harm to a relationship. If that rings true for you, then you should work through the issue with her and forgive her if possible.
It could be that your anger at your mother stems_from your own needs that haven't been met. Sometimes adults behave like children when they are around their parents—looking to get something from them. If you find yourself behaving like a demanding 15-year-old, try not to focus on what she isn't doing for you.
It's important to remember no parent is perfect. Sometimes daughters have to become mothers themselves before they really understand that. I have had a few friends who have had bad relationships with their mothers, but the birth of their own children has helped them appreciate everything their mothers have done for them over the years. However, whether you become a mother or not, it is worth practicing your appreciation of her. Focus on all the reasons why you love her. Write them down, remind yourself of them and try telling her some of them, too. And if there are moments when you want to express something critical(批评性的),try to make sure you say five nice things for every negative one. That's because harsh(严厉的) words stick much longer than kind ones.
Sincerely,
Mike

True friends double your happiness and half your burdens. Basically how you would like a true friend to be is what you should be like to your true friends. Trust, forgiveness, responsibility are some elements of a true friendship.
True friendships are hard to achieve. And what's more, life is short. So treasure these friends if you already have them. If you don't continue to search, because once you have them, life will become so much easier to live, no matter what happens. I have been through very difficult times and I dare say, without my friends, I would not have made it. Friendships need lots of energy and patience to maintain them. Not to mention time. When your friend needs you, and when things are not going too well on your side, it is often so easy to turn_a_deaf_ear_to their requests. It is especially during these times that you must find the strength to help your friend.
And it is during these times that your friendship will be made stronger. And you must always be happy for their successes, even when things are not going too well for you. It might be hard to do this, but it is something that you need to learn.
Think about all the sacrifices your friend has made for you and all the times when he was happy for you despite his own troubles. Think about all the happy times you enjoyed and the sad, difficult times you went through together. That should give you plenty of patience to actually be a true friend. Remember: true friends are the next best thing to family. They will always be your supporters.

Aging brings wrinkles, sagging bodies and frustrating forgetfulness. But getting older is not all bad for many people. Mounting evidence suggests aging may be a key to happiness. There is conflicting research on the subject, however, and experts say it may all boil down to this: Attitude is everything.
Older adults tend to be more optimistic and have a more positive outlook on life than their younger opposites who are under stress. The big question is why seniors are the happier. A recent study suggests one reason: Older adults remember the past through happy memories. Aging can bring more cheer as people become more comfortable with themselves and their roles in society. The older adults said they were enjoying more time with their family, spending more time on hobbies and having greater financial security and did not have to work.
But others are doubtful about the link between happiness and growing older.
“The notion that those in old age are the happiest is misleading,” said Richard Easterlin, a professor of economics at the University of Southern California. “It is based on comparing people of different ages who are the same in terms of income, health, family life, ” Easterlin added. “When you take account of the fact that older people have lower income than the younger, are less healthy, and are more likely to be living alone, then you will find it hard to accept that they are happier.”
In fact, scientists have found that as people age, their health declines and social networks disappear as their friends die, which can make the elderly less happy.
Even if one does give in to age's dark side, health and happiness don't always go hand-in-hand. It's all about attitude. Research by the University of Chicago suggests that attitude about life and happiness is partly shaped by the era in which a person was born. It turns out that individuals who adapt the best to changes also have the highest expected levels of happiness.
Despite the conflicting findings about aging and happiness, the good news is that there doesn't appear to be a limit to how much happiness one can achieve in one's life. “Most people desire happiness,” Easterlin said. “To my knowledge, no one has identified a limit to attainable happiness.”

Dear_Mary,
I'm_sorry_to_hear_that_you_are_having_trouble_in_making_new_friends_in_your_new_school._So_I'd_like_to_give_you_some_tips.
Firstly, be confident. There's nothing that attracts people more than someone who has a fairly positive attitude towards life. Secondly, make eye contact with others while talking with them; smile at them when they look at you, and laugh when they say something funny. Thirdly, invite others to do things together. For example, you can ask them to share a table at dinner. Besides, if you don't agree with others, do remember not to argue with them but discuss with them. Finally, offer your help whenever they are in trouble. As the saying goes, “A friend in need is a friend indeed.”
I hope you will find my tips helpful, and I'm sure that you'll make more and more new friends if you try your best.
Yours,
Lily
