Ⅲ.阅读理解
Once upon a time, a doting(溺爱的) mother asked Albert Einstein what she should read to her son to help him grow up as brilliant and intelligent as the famous scientist.
“Fairy tales,” he said, wisely nodding his head.
Why? Why would Albert Einstein—the Nobel Prizes Winning physicist recommend reading fairy tales? Was he joking? All the evidence suggested he was deadly serious. He also said, “When I examine myself and my methods of thought, I come to the conclusion that the gift of fantasy has meant more to me than any talent for abstract, positive thinking.”
Childhood is one of the factors that blur(使变模糊) the distinctions between the self and other objects. Thus fantasy stories appeal to children and appear to make sense to them.
There are several commonly accepted genres(类型) of fantasy, “Animal Fantasy” which centers around the lives of lovable talking animals and “Modern Fantasy” which focuses on adventures in other worlds and magical events. I am inclined to add a third genre “Human and Animal Fantasy”, which mixes human and animal characters. Another genre of fantasy may be “High Fantasy” which features heroes who combat evil and save the world from destruction.
Fantasy feeds a child's imagination and encourages creativity. The enjoyment that the genre engenders(产生) promotes reading and enhances literacy. Moreover, the fantasy genre may be used for teaching purposes. For example: A story about cruelty to animals would limit appeal to a child; however, a fantasy celebration of closeness between the children and their pets may give an element of excitement as the children are able to save animals from someone with cruel intentions.
Children love the Harry Potter series, and if they only see the movies they will miss a great opportunity to develop their reading skills by spending time with the lovable young wizards and witches(巫婆) of the Hogwarts community.

Success is often measured by the ability to overcome adversity(逆境).But it is often the belief of others that gives us the courage to try.
J.K. Rowling, author of the Harry Potter book series, began writing at age 6.In her biography(传记),she remembers with great fondness when her good friend—Sean became the first person to encourage her and help her build the confidence that one day she would be a very good writer.
“He was the first person with whom I really discussed my serious ambition(志向) to be a writer. He was also the only person who thought I was bound to(注定)be a success at it,which meant much more to me than I ever told him at the time.”
Though there were many difficulties,Rowling continued her writing, particularly fantasy stories. But it wasn't until 1990 that she first came up with the idea about Harry Potter. As she recalls(回忆),it was on a long train journey from London to Manchester that “the idea of Harry Potter simply fell into my head. To my great disappointment,I didn't have a pen with me,and I was too shy to ask anybody if I could borrow one. I think, now, that this was probably a good thing, because I simply sat and thought, for four (delayed train) hours, and all the details came up in my brain, and this thin,black-haired,bespectacled(戴眼镜的) boy who didn't know he was a wizard became more and more real to me.”
That same year, her mother died after a ten-year fight with serious diseases, which deeply affected her writing. She went on to marry and had a daughter, but separated from her husband shortly afterwards.
During this time,Rowling was diagnosed with depression. Unemployed, she finished her first novel in area cafes, where she could get her daughter to fall asleep. After being refused by 12 publishing houses, the first Harry Potter novel was sold to a small British publishing house.
Now with seven books that have sold nearly 400 million copies in 64 languages,J.K.Rowling is the highest earning novelist in history. And it all began with her friend's encouragement as well as her ambition to write.

From my earliest memories,I felt as if my mother was preparing me for something special. When entering a room, her entire focus was on me. I felt as if I was the center of her universe—a great feeling. Offering her the same respect,I intently listened to her stories without interrupting;I tried to return that feeling of being truly loved.
Even though there was always deep affection flowing between us,she wasn't a softy. She worked hard and expected her children to do the same. I began working in our little corner grocery store by age eight and managed it by the age of twelve. She appreciated my hard work and treated me as an equal. I learned that I could do anything if I tried hard enough. I learned to depend on myself.
My mother always supported my decisions, but also shared her concerns. When I decided to retire early from teaching to teach and write about etiquette(礼仪),she announced her concerns. She worried that there wasn't a market for it—my mother, always the business person. Nevertheless,by the end of our conversation she encouraged me with “With your training and love of people, you are perfect for this.”
By example,my mother taught me how to show respect for others. She gave me my listening skills,my sympathy and my manners. Through her,I learned to be strong,to follow my heart and to work hard. I never give up. If not for this,I wouldn't be a successful business owner and good friend to all.

A
Gene Wolfe is one of the most admired and respected American science fiction and fantasy writers. He is also a productive writer of outstanding short fiction, which is collected in many volumes over the last forty years, most recently in The Best of Gene Wolfe.
Although Wolfe is not as well-known to readers as he once was, he has been the receiver of great praise, including three World Fantasy Awards, two Nebulas, and eight Hugo Award nominations (提名).Sci-fi author Harlan Ellison has called him, “no less than one of the finest, most original writers in the world today”, and the Encyclopedia of Science Fiction names him “quite possibly the most important” writer in the field of science fiction.
Born in 1931, New York, Gene Wolfe moved frequently as a child, but spent most of his growing-up years in Texas.Wolfe began writing fiction in 1956, selling his first story, The Dead Man,to Sir magazine in 1965.He produced a vast amount of short fiction during the 1960s and 1970s, many of which were published in Damon Knight's Orbit anthologies. In 1972 Wolfe's groundbreaking The Fifth Head of Cerberus appeared. The story of human conquest (征服) upon two distant planets, the book examines issues of identity, individuality, and the results of colonialism upon both the colonized and the colonizer. The novel was later listed in David Pringle's 1985 list of The 100 Best Novels in science fiction for the period 1949~1984.
Many of his novels, The Shadow of the Torturer included, rely on a diary or letter to tell his story. In addition, Wolfe's early interest in mystery novels shines through in his ability to drop cleverly hidden clues (线索) that allow the reader to grasp at the possible narrative behind the narrative.
By 1984 Wolfe was able to retire and devote himself full-time to his writing.Yet despite (尽管) all this, and despite the continuing respect of his colleagues, his work has become somewhat unfamiliar.Wolfe's admirers hope this fact will be at least somewhat improved by his most recent offering, The Wizard Knight, which falls within the fantasy type that is currently popular.

Sometimes people call each other“scared-cat”. But have you ever thought about this expression? When a cat is frightened, its heart starts beating faster, its muscles get tense and there are changes in the chemicals in its bloodstream. Although the cat doesn't realize this, its body is getting ready for action. If the danger continues, the animal will do one of two things. It will protect itself,or it will run away as fast as it can.
Something like this also happens to people. When we are excited, angry or scared by other feelings, our bodies go through many physical changes. Our hearts beat faster, and our muscles get tense. All of these changes make us more alert and ready to react. We,too, get ready to defend ourselves or run.
Human beings, however, have a problem that animals never face. If we give way to our feelings and let them take over,we can get into trouble. Have you ever said something in anger or hit somebody and regretted it later? Have you ever shouted at a teacher, told somebody you were lonely,or said you were in love, and then wished later you had kept your mouth shut? It isn't always clever to express your feelings freely.
Does this mean that it's smarter to always hide our feelings? No! If you keep feelings of anger, sadness hidden away or bottled up inside, your body stays tense. Physical illness can develop, and you can feel disturbed badly inside. It can actually be bad for your health. It isn't good to keep pleasant feelings inside either; all feelings need to be expressed.
Feelings that you keep all bottled up inside don't just go away. It's as if you bought some bananas and put them in a cupboard. You might not be able to see them, but before long you'd smell them. And if you opened the cupboard, chances are that you'd see little fruit flies flying all over them. They are bad.
You can try to treat feelings as if they were bananas in the cupboard. You can hide them and you can pretend they don't exist, but they'll still be around. And at last you'll have to deal with them, just like those bananas.

It is named a kind of wooden Eiffel Tower, because of the fact that there was a large wooden platform far out in the lake on which stood an improbably high diving board. It was,I'm sure, the county's tallest wooden structure and no one had ever been known to jump from it.
So it was quite a shock when our teacher,Mr. David, announced that he would dive off the high board that very afternoon.
Word of his questionable plan was already spreading through town as Mr. David swam out to the platform. He was just a tiny, stick figure when he got there but even from such a distance the high board seemed almost to touch the clouds.Once at the top,he paced the enormously long board, then took some deep breaths and finally stood at edge.He was going to do it.
Several hundred people had gathered at the shore to watch.Mr. David stood for quite a long time, then he raised his arms, took one massive bounce and launched himself into a perfect dive.It was beautiful. He fell with perfect style for what seemed minutes. The crowd fell silent. The only sound to be heard was the faint whistle of his body tearing through the air toward the water far,far below.
But about three quarters of the way down he seemed to have second thoughts and began suddenly to panic, waving his arms and legs like someone having a bad dream. When he was perhaps thirty feet above the water,he gave up on waving and spread his arms and legs wide, apparently hoping that it would somehow slow his fall.
It didn't.
He hit the water at over six hundred miles an hour. The impact was so loud that it made birds fly out of their trees three miles away.I don't think he entered the water at all.He just bounced off it,about fifteen feet back into the air. After that,he lay still on the surface, spinning like an autumn leaf.
He was brought to shore by two passing fishermen in a rowboat and placed on an old blanket where he spent the rest of the afternoon.Occasionally he accepted small sips of water, but otherwise was too shocked to speak. From head to toe,he was covered with deep red bruises.
It was the best day of my life.

I used to believe courtesy was a thing of the past. Very seldom have I encountered a courteous human being in this modern era.
Recently, I had to change my thinking, when I came face to face with just such a human being in a coffee place, with my two daughters. The place was crowded as usual and we had to climb steep(陡的) stairs in order to find an empty table. After enjoying coffee and snacks, we went down the narrow stairs, where there was hardly any space for another person to either climb up or come down.
Just as I was in the middle of the stairs, a man entered the main entrance of the restaurant which was right in front of the staircase(楼梯). I was sure I would be pushed roughly by this man going up. I kept coming down as fast as I could. My daughters were already down, looking up at me worriedly, hoping I would reach them before the stranger started walking up the stairs, knowing I was a nervous sort.
Nearly reaching them, I noticed the man still standing near the door. I reached my daughters and passed the stranger at the entrance door which he kept holding open. I looked back, thinking he was still at the door, deciding whether to go in or find another less crowded place. I saw him going up the stairs, two at a time. I told my daughters about it and all three of us felt bad that we did not even thank the courteous gentleman who was actually holding the door open for us ladies to pass through before going up.
Such well-mannered people are hard to find these days when pushing is very common in our advanced but aggressive society. We applauded for his chivalry(彬彬有礼).

Wild elephants can tell whether a voice comes from a man,a woman or a boy,a new study says. That's what researchers found when they played recordings of people for elephants in Kenya. Scientists say this is an advanced thinking skill that other animals haven't shown. It let elephants figure out who is a threat and who isn't. The result shows that the clever animals are also studying people, said study author Karen McComb.
“Basically, they have developed this very rich knowledge of the humans that they share their habitat with,”said McComb,a professor at the University of Sussex in England. “Memory is key. They must build up that knowledge somehow.”
The study was released on Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
It's close to but not quite like the Dr. Seuss book, where the elephant Horton hears something that others can't hear.
McComb and colleagues went to Amboseli National Park in Kenya, where hundreds of wild elephants live among humans, sometimes coming in conflict over scarce water. The scientists used voice recordings of Maasai men,who on occasion kill elephants, and Kamba men,who are less of a threat to the elephants.
As a result, the elephants reacted more defensively—retreating and gathering in a bunch—to the Maasai language recording because it was associated with the more threatening human tribe, said study co-author Graeme Shannon.
They repeated the experiment with recordings of Maasai men and women. Since women almost never spear elephants, the animals reacted less defensively to the women's voices. The same thing happened when they substituted young boys' voices. “Making this kind of fine distinctions in human voice patterns is quite remarkable,”said Emory University animal cognition expert Frans de Waal, who was not part of the study.

Dear Mrs. Smith,
So my first week at college is over! No lectures this morning so I think I'd email you and let you know what things are going.
I'm glad to say that anything has worked out fine in the dorm. I remember asking for a room as far away from the lifts as possible and they find me a comfortable one on second floor. There are two girls from my course here and I plan to make friend with them so that we can help each other on the course work. Everyone else seems very nice and warmly here.
Well, I had better to stop now. I'm going to attend mine first lesson this afternoon, for I've got some preparation to make. Keep in touch.
Best wishes!
Carol

One possible version:
Dear_Tom,
I'm glad that we're both interested in fantasy novels, so we can now talk a lot about them.
I've had an interest in fantasy novels since I was a child. I love them, especially those that are well-written. There's nothing better than dropping into the pages of a well-written fantasy novel and finding a world of wonders to explore.
I think the plots of good fantasy novels are very odd and entertaining. I usually never know what will happen next. These unexpected plots always excite me. They usually leave a lot to the imagination, which I think will help me develop the ability to create novels of my own.
Which novels have you been reading recently? Please recommend some to me in your next letter.
Best_wishes!
Yours,
Li_Ming
