No human has set foot on the Moon since 1972. Now,after more than four decades of inactivity, interest in putting humans back on the Moon is finally heating up again. But who will get there first?
CHINA
On 14 December 2013,China successfully landed its Jade Rabbit rover(探测车)on the Moon. It is now working on its next exploration mission. Named Chang'e 4,the mission is scheduled to touch down in the Aitken Basin near the end of 2018. If successful,it will be the first landing on the Moon's far side.
RUSSIA
Russia plans a manned Moon landing in 2030. It is currently working on a project whose idea is that the landers will explore the south pole of the Moon, exploring for resources such as minerals and water ice to be used to provide for a human outpost (前哨站).
INDIA
Following the success of its Chandrayaan-1 in 2008,India announced a follow-on mission. Chandrayaan-2 was meant to cooperate with Russia. But when the Russians failed to deliver the promised lander in 2013,India decided to go it alone. Chandrayaan-2 is about to be sent up in 2018.
USA
In December 2018,NASA plans to send up the Exploration Mission 1,an uncrewed test of their Orion astronaut capsule in which the craft will circle around the Moon before returning to Earth. All being well,a crewed capsule will follow in 2023. Should the mission prove a success, the astronauts will be the first humans to see the far side of the Moon with their own eyes since Apollo 17 in 1972.

Many 3 feel their pets understand them, for animals are 4 to sense anger and sorrow. Often a cat or dog can comfort us 5 when human words don't help. A pet can be something 9 to each member of the family, another baby to the mother, a sister or brother to a(n) 10 child, a grandchild to the elderly, but for all of us pets provide 11 and companionship. It has 12 been suggested that tiny pets 13 be sent as companions to astronauts on space ships, to help reduce the stress and 14 of space flights.
In this Plastic Age, when most of us live in large cities, pets are particularly important for 15 . A pet in the family keeps people in 16 with the more natural, animal world. Seeing an animal give birth brings understanding of the naturalness of childbirth, and seeing a pet 17 helps a child to cope with sorrow. A
A home science experiment recently took the world by storm. Two teens from Toronto, in Canada, sent a Lego man rising above the Earth and captured their tiny astronaut's trip on film.
Mathew Ho and Asad Muhammad, both 17, used a weather balloon to launch their plastic lego model 16 miles above the Earth. This is inside a part of Earth's atmosphere.
The two teens were inspired by a similar project performed by students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The MIT students had launched a weather balloon with a camera into near space and taken many unusual images of the Earth. Mathew and Asad then spent four months figuring out how to launch their own spacecraft into the space.
Traveling to space is expensive for NASA, but Mathew and Asad worked hard to keep their costs down. They bought much of their equipment used and even sewed the Lego man's parachute (降落伞) by hand. In total, the project cost only $400.
“We had a lot of anxiety on launch day because there were high winds when we were going up,” Mathew told reporters. They had to pump extra helium (氦) into the balloon so that it would rise quickly and avoid being blown too far off course by the strong winds.
The toy astronaut's journey lasted 97 minutes before the balloon broke and he fell back to Earth. Mathew and Asad then spent two weekends looking for their spacecraft. It had landed 76 miles away from the launch site.
The student scientists are currently finishing up their final year of high school and applying for colleges. They are also looking into more do-it-yourself space projects.
“I guess the sky is not really the limit anymore,” Mathew told reporters. “We never knew we'd get this far. It's been a lesson for us that hard work pays off.”

In our everyday lives we meet situations in which we take many things for granted. We only treasure things when they are gone. This is a sad truth of human nature. One day, I found myself as a witness to a similar situation.
One evening, I left work and boarded the train. After entering, I noticed something unusual. The center of the car had a few empty seats while both ends were crowded with people standing. I didn't pay much attention and sat down on one of the empty seats. I sensed a funny smell. It wasn't long before I noticed a homeless person sleeping on three seats in front of me. He was bleeding from his nose. Why wasn't anyone helping him?
His clothes were torn and he was giving off a strange smell. Along with the smell, his eyes were dull, watery, and red. Occasionally he scratched himself and people looked at him as if he had committed a crime. As the train stopped at stations and more people came in they covered their noses and faced away from him. All the seats around him were empty.
Suddenly, he began to swear at the people around him. A plain-clothes police officer who looked like a construction worker took out his certificate and showed it to the homeless man. The officer, not wanting to touch the homeless man, told him his rights and directed him to exit the train. As the officer walked the man out of the train, the homeless man turned around and said “MY HOME!” and started crying.
A man doesn't value things until they are gone. If he didn't have a home, at least he had freedom. Now he has neither. No one wants to help someone who won't help himself.

A
Satellites are an important part of our ordinary lives. For example, the information for weather forecasts is sent by satellite. Some satellites have cameras which take photographs of the Earth to show how clouds are moving. Satellites are also used to connect our international phone calls.
Computer connections of the World Wide Web and Internet also use satellites. Many of our TV programs come to us through satellites. Airplane pilots also sometimes use a satellite to help them find their exact location.
We use satellites to send television pictures from one part of the world to another. They are usually 35, 880 kilometers above the equator. Sometimes we can see a satellite in the sky and it seems to stay in the same place. This is because it is moving around the world at 11, 000 kilometers an hour—exactly the same speed that the earth rotates. A satellite must orbit the Earth with its antennae (天线) facing the earth. Sometimes, it moves away from its orbit, so there are little rockets on it which are used to put the satellite back in the right position. This usually happens about every five or six days.
Space is not empty! Every week, more and more satellites are sent into space to orbit the Earth. A satellite usually works for about 10~12 years. Satellites which are broken are sometimes repaired by astronauts or sometimes brought back to Earth to be repaired. Often, very old or broken satellites are left in space to orbit the Earth for a very long time. This is very serious because some satellites use nuclear power and they can crash into each other.

Everyone who participates in holiday activities has traditions, which involve a holiday meal, helping the needy, the practicing of faith, the lighting of candles, and much more. As is well known, holiday traditions play an important role in the lives of children. Here are some of the primary benefits of holiday traditions for children.
Firstly, holiday traditions create stability. Although children often seek out novelties—such as the newest video game or movie—they also desire stability in their lives. This is especially the case for teens, who are experiencing rapid and often confusing changes in their social, emotional and physical world. Holiday traditions serve as touchstones that the family returns to year after year, no matter what happens. This helps developing children feel secure, in spite of all the shifting that is occurring within and around them.
Secondly, holiday traditions help children feel useful. From about 5 to 11 years of age, children struggle to believe that they can be useful and successful at a variety of activities. Holiday traditions typically involve clear roles and responsibilities for each family member, from the youngest to the oldest. For instance, a kid may be tasked with picking out the candy that will be given out on Halloween or helping to make cookies for Christmas. In successfully completing their holiday-related tasks children get to naturally work on their sense of industry, and therefore develop their personalities.
Finally, holiday traditions convey important cultural values. For one, the values of the larger group are passed along. For example, the celebration of Thanksgiving centers around American values. At the same time, holiday traditions pass clear messages about what the particular family values. For instance, if the family tradition helps out at a soup kitchen every Thanksgiving, the importance of community involvement is strongly communicated.

You don't know what you've got until it's gone. When I bake cookies, I immediately miss them the moment I have eaten the last one. Last summer when I left a summer camp, I didn't realize how great it really was until I got home. What happens, however, when that happens to one of your senses?
A few months ago, I woke up deaf in one ear. I did not pay much attention to it at first. It felt that I had water in my ear. However, I began to hear less and less out of that ear. I even had to ask people to talk into my other ear so I could hear them. I didn't realize how serious it was until later in the day. That evening, when I was sitting on my bed doing chemistry homework, I fell off my bed! When trying to get up, I was incredibly dizzy (头晕的).
I went to see a doctor who told me that hearing loss was common. However, it was usually bilateral,or occurs in both ears. He said that my hearing should come back within a week.
After about a week the dizziness eventually went away, but the hearing loss did not. The medicine helped and I gained some of my hearing back. After many hearing tests, it was determined that I had permanent hearing loss in that ear.
School became harder for me because I couldn't hear my teachers. I was very depressed.
Finally, I bought a hearing aid. With the hearing aid, my hearing is almost back to normal! It makes school and group conversations easier.
My friends, teachers, and even complete strangers always ask me questions about hearing loss. I answer them patiently. I never get offended because I know that this is new to them. I am delighted I can teach them something new.
What I have learned from this particular situation is that when things are desperate, there is always something good that can come out of it. My experience has given me an opportunity to teach people about something new to them and it has taught me about the value of hearing.

Cities are likely to be affected by overheating, thanks to something called the urban heat island effect. Cities tend to be short of trees, which provide shade, and they are covered with black pavement, which absorbs heat from the sun. Think of how it feels to wear a dark shirt versus a white shirt on a sunny day. A black shirt absorbs light, heating you up. But a white shirt reflects light, keeping you cool.
The average temperature in a city of a million or more people can be more than 5 degrees F hotter than surrounding areas. That extra 5 degrees can turn a hot day from uncomfortable to deadly. As temperatures rise, cities will be an especially dangerous place to live during a heat wave. To protect public health, city officials are going to make the city cooler.
As part of that effort, Los Angeles is coating its roads in CoolSeal, a gray paint that keeps streets and parking lots 10 degrees cooler than black asphalt(沥青). It will help Angelinos save money during the summer, when air conditioning sends power bills soaring. And it will save lives by lowering temperatures and improving air quality. Hot weather worsens air pollution by turning car exhaust into smog, which can make life miserable for people with asthma(哮喘) and other breathing problems.
Of course, L.A. will have to do more than paint over a few streets to cool off the city. Angelinos will also need to plant more trees and apply white paint to rooftops—at least those not already covered in solar panels. While L.A. is a pioneer of reflective streets, other cities, like New York, are already experimenting with reflective roofs or, like Melbourne, lowering the temperature by planting trees. L.A. is hardly alone in its effort to stay cool.
“This is an urgent challenge, and it's much bigger than one person,”said Mayor Garcetti in a recent statement.“Climate change is a fact of life that people in Los Angeles and cities around the world live with every day.”

30.What benefit can people gain from the use of CoolSeal?
A.Increasing the indoor activities.
B.Promoting the sale of air conditioners.

Scientists have discovered thirteen kinds of vitamins. They say vitamins help to carry out chemical changes within cells. If we do not get enough of the vitamins we need in our food, we are at risk of developing a number of diseases. Which foods should be eaten to keep us healthy? Let us look at some important vitamins.
Vitamin A helps prevent skin and other tissues from becoming dry. People who do not get enough vitamin A cannot see well in darkness. Vitamin A is found in fish liver oil and the yellow part of eggs.
Vitamin B-1 is also called thiamine. Thiamine changes starchy(含淀粉的) foods into energy. Thiamine is found not just in whole grains like brown rice, but also in beans and peas, nuts, and meat and fish.
Vitamin B-12 is needed so folic acid can do its work. Together, they help produce red blood cells. Folic acid has been shown to prevent physical problems in babies when taken by their mothers during pregnancy. Vitamin B-12 is found naturally in foods like eggs, meat, fish and milk products. Vitamin B-12 is found in green leafy vegetables and other foods, like legumes and citrus fruits (柑橘类水果).

We spend hours every day doing things that aren't necessarily productive or healthy. Below are some ways to create better habits for yourself!
Think. What's holding you back? Before you begin adjusting your habits, you should break down the reasons why you're hesitating(犹豫). Could the habits be inconvenient? Could they make you feel worried? These reasons don't mean you're sure to fail. 36 Once you know each reason specifically, you can develop a solution.
37 It doesn't have to be absolutely perfect, but you should be relatively stress-free when you begin a habit change. When you're stressed or upset about something, it'll cause disorder in your daily life and make it harder to keep up with your good habit.
Pick just one. 38 Developing habits is like overloading yourself with coursework. The more you try to pile, the more likely you are to fail. In order to make a habit automatic, it takes a lot of conditioning.
Start small. We often have dreams where we change our lives in one day. 39 As human beings, we get over-motivated (动机过强的) and pile tasks. Instead of doing that, build yourself up gradually. For example, if you want to exercise and start out at 30 minutes per workout, increase it to 35 minutes next time.
Have a role model. Sometimes the actions of others are enough to convince us to leave the couch(长沙发). Think of a role model in your life—it can be a musician, athlete, educator, or anyone you admire. 40 They got off their couch and changed their life, so that means you can, too!
A.Set your goals.
B.Be sure your life is in order.
C.Chances are, they'll probably enjoy it too!
D.These people are well-known for a reason.
E.You just need to deal with them one by one.
F.Make sure you focus on picking up one habit.
G.The bad news is that that's pretty much impossible.
【解题导语】 本文主要介绍了几种培养好习惯并坚持它的几种方法。
36.解析:选E 本句的关键词是“them”,指的是上文提到的“These reasons”且“deal with them one by one”与后文的“know each reason specifically”相照应。
37.解析:选B 本句总结了本段的主要意思,即在改变习惯时要保证自己的生活井然有序,不慌张,可以从“stress-free,stressed or upset,cause disorder in your daily life”等判断出。
38.解析:选F 本句解释了本段的主题句内容。
39.解析:选G 本句对上文的内容进行评论:想要一天改变生活,是不可能的事情。
40.解析:选D 本句对上文提到的人物特点做说明:他们因为一个理由而出名。

At that time, the trees there were very green, that left a deep impression on me and the water there was so much clear that I even could see the fish swimming. When it gets dark, the air was cooler than it in the daytime. People liked to walk out their houses to chat together. I liked to play games with my friends but ran along the village happily. One possible version:
Recently our class had a discussion on whether space is worth exploring. 30% of the students don't think it worthwhile. They think that space is too far away from us and our daily life, and the money spent on space exploration could have been used to solve such problems as starvation and pollution. However, the others hold the opposite view because we have benefited a lot from space exploration, such as using satellites for communication and the weather forecast. Also, space research will enable us to find new resources to solve the problem of energy shortage on the earth.
Personally, I am in favour of space exploration. We may solve the population problem by moving to other planets one day.
