Tang Dynasty poets sang for about three centuries in different tones. There were many famous poets living in the Tang period, such as Li Bai, Du Fu, Bai Juyi and Li Shangyin.Poems of the Tang Dynasty edited in the Qing Dynasty is a collection of more than 48,900 poems that were written by over 2,200 poets. But it didn't cover all the poems of the Tang Dynasty.
During the Tang Dynasty, poems were recited when lovers walked under the moonlight. Poems were also recited when soldiers fought on the battlefield. People recited them in the open air or at temple fairs.
Tang Dynasty poets wrote poems to win fame and also to develop their temperament(性情). They poured out deep feelings for their friends and criticized injustice in the world through poems.
In the Tang Dynasty scholars had to be poets. Their readers were not only people of high social position but also common people. Poets recited poems, women singers sang poems and other ranks of people, including old women and children, read Tang poems. This atmosphere affected foreigners who visited the country at that time. As a result, Tang poetry was introduced to some adjacent countries, like Japan and Vietnam.
Tang poetry is a most brilliant page in the history of ancient Chinese literature. It's a miracle (奇迹) in the cultural history of mankind. The Tang Dynasty was a powerful empire with a vast territory. It inherited (继承) Chinese civilization that went back to ancient times, was combined with the best of other cultures and adopted the benefits of other nations in the world. Tang poetry wasn't the only spiritual wealth created by the Tang Dynasty people. Philosophy and religion, handwriting and painting, and music and dance all gained new peaks of development. Tang poetry, however, was the jewel in the crown and its greatest achievement.

Teens want to be with people their own age—their peers. Teens spend more time with their peers. With peers, teens can be both connected and independent and develop identities of their own. While families may help teens in feeling proud and confident, peers are often more accepting of their feelings and thoughts.
The influence of peers is of great importance in your teen's life. Whether you like it or not, the opinions of your child's peers often carry more weight than yours.
At its best, peers can act as positive role models. Peer pressure can arouse your teen's enthusiasm, mobilize your teen's energy, and encourage your teen to follow healthy behavior.
The need for acceptance and belonging is vital during the teen years. Teens who feel isolated or rejected by their peers are more likely to engage in risky behavior in order to fit in with a group. In such situations, peer pressure can weaken a teen's judgment and contribute to unhealthy behavior. If your teen associates with people who are using drugs or displaying self-destructive behavior, then your child is probably doing the same.
We all want our children to be with peers who will have a positive influence, and stay away from peers who will engage in harmful or illegal activities.
Parents can support positive peer relationships by giving their teenagers their love and time. First of all, you should have a positive relationship with your teen. When parent-teen interactions are characterized by warmth, kindness, respect, and love, the relationship will flourish, so will the teen's self-esteem, mental health and social skills. Second, you should be interested in your teen's activities. This allows parents to know their teen's friends and to monitor their behavior, which is important in keeping teens out of trouble. Last but not the least, you should urge your teens to think for himself or herself. In this way, teens can develop a healthy sense of self and an ability to resist unhealthy peer pressure.

Petrol and diesel cars may still dominate our roads, but their days are numbered. A recent university study found that current electric cars could be used for 87 per cent of daily car journeys in the US. That figure could rise to 98 per cent by 2020.
One hurdle to the widespread adoption of electric cars has been “range anxiety”—drivers' concerns about running out of juice on a journey. While petrol stations are conveniently located across national road systems, the necessary network of electric charging stations is still being developed. That said, charging points are becoming increasingly common throughout the USA.
Attitudes towards electric vehicles have changed quite considerably over the last few years. Not that long ago, electric cars were met with distrust, and their large price tags drove customers away. Thanks to improvements in battery capacity, recharging times, performance and price, the current generation of electric cars is starting to persuade critics. Plug-in cars will soon give internal combustion engine models a run for their money.
As well as advancements on the road, electric vehicles are taking to the seas and skies. Electric boats are among the oldest methods of electric travel, having enjoyed several decades of popularity from the late 19th to the early 20th century before petrol-powered outboard motors took over. Now,the global drive for renewable energy sources is bringing electric boats back. Steps towards electric air travel are also being made, with Airbus and NASA among the organizations developing and testing battery powered planes. The experiments could soon make commercial electric flight a reality.
Electric vehicles do not produce any emissions. Were the US to act on the study's findings and replace 87 per cent of its cars with electric vehicles,it would reduce the national demand for petrol by 61 per cent. However, because of the production processes and the generation of electricity required to charge these vehicles, they cannot claim to be completely emissionfree. That said,as many countries continue to increase their use of renewable energy sources, electric vehicles will become even cleaner.

Robert Frost(1874~1963) was the statesman of American letters in the twentieth century,a rare national poet who was read and respected by both university professors and everyday citizens. In his life,Frost won four Pulitzer Prizes for his works—more than any other poet in American history. His most famous poems include “The Road Not Taken” “Fire and Ice” and “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening”.Though he is widely read,Frost is also one of the most misunderstood writers in the United States for the complexity of his poems.
Though born in California,Frost was brought up in New England, where he is inseparably linked. After dropping out of Dartmouth College to seek his literary dream,he remained upset for years, producing collections of works but failing to get enough of them published to make his efforts financially worthwhile. Finally,Frost left the United States in 1912 to see whether his work might be better received in London. It was,and in 1913 his first full collection was published in Great Britain. Fellow American poet Amy Lowell adored Frost's work and brought it back to the United States, publicizing it insistently. Soon afterwards Frost's collections became bestsellers, and he became a famous figure.
From then on,Frost was on his way to the lifelong respect and recognition for his achievements in poetry. In 1961,he was invited to read a poem for the presidential inauguration (总统就职典礼) of John F.Kennedy. He recited his poem,“The Gift Outright” from memory at the ceremony. This was perhaps his last poetry reading in front of a wide national audience before his death in 1963.More importantly,Frost became the first poet to read a poem at a presidential inauguration.

Every year at this time, the peasants began their long religious journey to Geed-leh, to visit the church there, and to pray for God's help. They walked or rode in wagons; they crowded the roads leading to the holy town, for Geed-leh was famous in Poland as a place where God did miracles. The cool autumn days also brought many beggars to Geed-leh. The peasants gave away more of their money on such a religious holiday as this. Some of the beggars were blind; some had no feet or arms. Some were very old and seemed like lost children looking for their mothers.
There was one among them who was called “the Mute Singer”. He was given this name because he could not speak. There was a time when he was able to sing, while playing his guitar. But he lost his voice. Now he played the guitar and sang, but no sounds came from his throat. His lips just moved with the music.
The Mute Singer was a tall, strange-looking man. His face and hands were brown. He had white hair and a white beard:he looked like one of the wise men you read about in the Bible.
Early one morning I saw the Mute Singer washing himself at the river. He smiled and touched the ground with his hand, meaning that I should sit down. Then, he pointed his finger straight up, to tell me that he had a surprise for me.
Suddenly, he put his hand into the water and rubbed two of his fingers together, making a strange sound, exactly like the sound of a frog. He did it many times, and then he lightly hit the top of the water, sending little waves across the water to the other side.
Suddenly, everything around us seemed to be moving. I could not believe that it was real. Thousands of frogs came racing toward us, jumping, and swimming ... under the water and on top of the water. I began to shake with excitement.
The frogs crowded around us. I could see their heads and eyes showing above the top of the water.

Dear Peter,
How nice to receive your e-mail and I am very glad to know that you show such a great interest in Chinese Tang Poems. Now I will try my best to help you. This is an ancient Chinese poem written by a famous poet in the Tang Dynasty, Meng Jiao. The poem tells about mother's love, which is deep and sincere. A son will be on a long journey. Before leaving, his mother sews and mends clothes for the boy carefully by the candlelight, afraid that he will come back home late. Mother is the warm spring sun while we are new green grass bathing in her golden rays. How can we repay such a great love?
Reading the poem, I feel my heart deeply moved. There is no greater love in the world than maternal love. I'm determined to work hard and try my best to make sure my mother has a happy life in the future.
Yours,
Li Hua

Leaders shape history and here is a selection of the most remarkable views into these public figures plus first-hand accounts by those with access to them.
Margaret Thatcher by Charles Moore (2013)
Before Moore published the first volume of his biography, there had already been a mountain of books on Thatcher. Moore's account is different. He shows that far from being fearless, she could often be fearful without cause. The final volume will include her fall from power.
Harold Wilson by Ben Pimlott (1992)
Harold Wilson had become a ghostly figure when this book was published in 1992. The absence heightened a sense of mystery. Who was he? How to explain his seemingly contradictory characteristics? Pimlott solves some of the mysteries; the book is detailed until Wislon's final phase as prime minister in 1974.
Churchill by Roy Jenkins (2001)
Jenkins writes as a politician as well as a historian, analyzing Churchill's historic moves from the opinions of one who had also spoken in the Commons. Jenkins had resigned from high positions in battles over policy, and as one that changed parties, though not as frequently as Churchill did.
Roy Jenkins by John Campbell (2014)
Campbell calmly narrates many political and personal dramas, including Jenkins' intense relationship with Anthony Crosland when they were both students at Oxford. Campbell also addresses Jenkins' various affairs with women. Like Jenkins' political heroes, he led many lives. Campell is sharp in describing each of them.
Diaries, Volumes One to Six by Alastair Campbell (2017)
Love or hate him, Campbell remains the master of the inside story, not just because of his unusual ideas on the relationship between Tony Blair and Gordon Brown. This is an incredibly detailed book on what it's like to live inside No. 10:the cruel space of events; and the constant conflict with the media.

(2019·合肥质检)
Many years ago, when we were a young couple with two small children, aged 2 and 4, we were practically impecunious. My in-laws lived from hand to mouth, so we didn't expect any help from them. My parents lived a great distance away, and I was too ashamed to let them know about our situation.
My husband was trying to earn a living with an old pick-up truck, carrying groceries for local shopkeepers, but it was constantly breaking down. It took almost all the money we had to have it fixed. The truck was also the only means of transportation for us.
We lived in the countryside, and we always used the back door because the driveway led to it. One winter evening, I stepped outside to take a bag of trash to the barrel and almost tripped over something. It was nearly dark, and I had to bend down to see what it was. I could hardly believe my eyes. There sat a large basket loaded with food.
It was heavy, so I called my husband to carry it into the house. Once inside, we discovered two loaves of bread, some butter, several cans of vegetables, a can of orange sauce, and a large turkey. There was so much that I couldn't remember it all, but it was everything we needed fo fix a wonderful dinner—everything except potatoes.
A little while later I remembered that I hadn't taken the trash to the barrel. By now it was dark, so I had to turn on the yard light—and that's when I spotted a small bag of potatoes sitting on the porch.
That dinner was the best I could remember.
We weren't able to thank our donators, though, because we never found out who had been so generous in helping a struggling young family. Whoever it was, we are forever grateful.

Nov. 21 is World Hello Day.It began back in the 1970s as part of an effort to make the world more peaceful. It was created just after the war between Israel and Egypt in 1973.The philosophy (哲学) behind it is:Say “Hello” and stop war.
It sounds like a fine idea, but most of us know that simply saying “Hello” won't bring about world peace.Still, on a smaller range, the simple act of saying “Hello” to someone can make a lot of difference.
This might not be obvious. After all, it's such a casual thing and requires so little effort. You raise your head to someone as you pass by them in the school corridor (走廊) , say “Hello”, and then it's over.
Although we might not realize it, a small thing like a greeting can mean a lot to a person. Many people are lonely because they're shy. They find it difficult to communicate with people, even though they want to.It leads to them feeling cut off.
On this basis, maybe it's a good idea, not just on Nov.21, but every day, to remember to say“Hello”to as many people as we can.The stranger who hears your greeting may secretly smile in their heart. You might even make their day.
Greeting other people is the easiest way to be polite.Politeness is the way we individual humans link up with the rest of the human world outside of our circles of family and friends.Politeness is one of the aspects of culture that make us a society rather than just many individuals living in the same space.
No one said it better than the French author Joseph Joubert:“Politeness is the flower of humanity.” A “Hello” to a stranger is a small thing, and often neglected (忽视), but through it we can make the world better for another person.

Vitamin B could help lessen the effects of the most dangerous type of air pollution, according to a new study published recently. In the first study of its kind, a team of international researchers looked at the damage caused by one of the pollutants that has the most severe impact on health: PM 2.5.
Particulate matter, or PM, is a type of air pollutant consisting of small particles of different sizes. PM 2.5 has a diameter of fewer than 2.5 micrometers, about 30 times smaller than a human hair. These particles are so small that they can go into our respiratory system (呼吸系统), resulting in lung and systemic inflammation (炎症) and stress.
The team found that something as simple as a daily vitamin B supplement could potentially reduce the impact of the tiny particles on the human body, although they stressed that the research was in its early stages and the sample size was small.
For this study, 10 volunteers were initially exposed to clean air and given a placebo(安慰剂) to check their responses. The group then took another placebo for four weeks before being exposed to heavily polluted air from downtown Toronto, where an estimated 1,000 cars pass every hour. The bad air was delivered to the volunteers through an “oxygen-type” face mask. The experiment was then repeated, with each volunteer taking a vitamin B supplement daily made up of 2.5 mg of folic acid, 50 mg of vitamin B6, and 1 mg of vitamin B12. B6 can be found in liver, chicken and nuts, and B12 in fish, meat, eggs, milk and some cereals.
The researchers found that four weeks of vitamin B supplements reduced the damage of PM 2.5 exposure by 28%~76%. The results highlight how prevention at an individual level could be used to fight the harmful effects of PM 2.5.

33.What can we infer from Paragraph 3?
A.The process of the research was not scientific.
B.This kind of research has been done many times.
C.Further studies are needed to confirm their findings.
D.Vitamin B is hard to obtain in people's daily life.
解析:选C 推理判断题。根据第三段中的“although they stressed that the research was in its early stages and the sample size was small”可知,该项研究处于初级阶段且样本规模小,因此还需要更多的研究来证明研究团队的发现。

A.International researchers have a new finding.
B.Vitamin B could reduce the damage of PM 2.5.

37 Therefore, you'll be able to tell what your friend is upset about, and thus avoid awkwardly sitting with no idea what is going on or what to say. It will also give you an advantage because it'll make it easier for you to know what are the right and wrong statements to make.
Be an active listener. When your friends pause and look to you for a response, repeat what they just said. 38
Give your friend a hug, whether he or she shared anything with you or not. 39 You could also pat(轻拍) him or her gently on the shoulder or back.
Don't use this as an opportunity to talk about yourself and your own problems. 40 There is nothing worse than one person adding to the woes(悲痛) by trying to out-compete with the other's own woes. Drop it and be empathetic(同情的) in more constructive ways.
A.This is about your friend!
B.They can cheer you up, or even help you in a way.
