(2019·全国卷Ⅱ)
Marian Bechtel sits at West Palm Beach's Bar Louie counter by herself, quietly reading her e-book as she waits for her salad. What is she reading? None of your business! Lunch is Bechtel's “me” time. And like more Americans, she's not alone.
A new report found 46 percent of meals are eaten alone in America. More than half (53 percent) have breakfast alone and nearly half (46 percent) have lunch by themselves. Only at dinnertime are we eating together anymore, 74 percent, according to statistics from the report.
“I prefer to go out and be out. Alone, but together, you know?” Bechtel said, looking up from her book. Bechtel, who works in downtown West Palm Beach, has lunch with coworkers sometimes, but like many of us, too often works through lunch at her desk. A lunchtime escape allows her to keep a boss from tapping her on the shoulder. She returns to work feeling energized. “Today, I just wanted some time to myself,” she said.
Just two seats over, Andrew Mazoleny, a local videographer, is finishing his lunch at the bar. He likes that he can sit and check his phone in peace or chat up the barkeeper with whom he's on a first-name basis if he wants to have a little interaction (交流). “I reflect on how my day's gone and think about the rest of the week,” he said. “It's a chance for self-reflection. You return to work recharged and with a plan.”
That freedom to choose is one reason more people like to eat alone. There was a time when people may have felt awkward about asking for a table for one, but those days are over. Now, we have our smartphones to keep us company at the table. “It doesn't feel as alone as it may have before all the advances in technology,” said Laurie Demeritt, whose company provided the statistics for the report.

My dad, Elvin Elliott, always loves farming. Even though he turns 82 this year, he'll be out on the tractor this summer, happily making hay for his 50 beef cows.
Last year I took a vacation day from work to shoot photos of Dad and my brother Terry, who takes time off every year to help with making hay. Terry says it's still a vacation for him because he enjoys being out in the fresh air, driving a tractor and helping Dad. As I watched Dad work with Terry, I thought how lucky I was to grow up on our farm.
My mom, Uzelia, was a city girl, but she supported Dad's dreams and became his best farmhand. They started in 1961 on a rented farm, tending 18 acres of tobacco and milking 18 cows. In 1975 they bought their own farm, and eventually milked as many as 130 Holsteins.
It was my job to drive the cows to the barn and bottle-feed the baby calves. Sometimes I'd have as many as 15 calves—and they all wanted to be fed at the same time. I used to tap them lightly on the nose with a stick. Before long they all knew to wait their turn. I would feed two, and when they finished, two more would come up.
My favorite haymaking memories are of break time, when we'd get “square nabs” peanut butter crackers and a Coke.
We sold our milk to Pine State Creamery. When it went out of business in 1989, Dad sold his Holsteins and got beef cows. And now, even though he's been farming for nearly 55 years, Dad has no plan to retire anytime soon. And why should he? He's doing exactly what he loves.

Weighing too much can damage your health, and obesity is a growing problem for both kids and adults around the world. Sleep might be one answer to the problem. A new study has found that elementary school students who slept too little were more likely to gain pounds.
Past studies have shown a link between sleeping less and weighing more, but scientists have had a tough time determining “which came first, the chicken or the egg,” says Julie C.Lumeng of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. In other words, it hasn't been clear whether kids who weigh too much have trouble sleeping, or whether sleeping less leads to weight gain. Both scenarios(可能出现的情况) seemed equally possible.
To get a better idea of which causes which, Lumeng and her colleagues interviewed the parents of 785 third graders from around the United States. The parents answered questions about how well their kids slept that year. Three years later, the parents answered the same questions. By sixth grade, 18 percent of kids involved in the study were obese.
The scientists found no relationship between weight and the students' race or gender. It also didn't matter how strict their parents were, or whether they were boys or girls. Obesity struck all of these groups equally. Instead, sleep seemed to be the key factor. Over the 3 years of the study, the children averaged a healthy 9.5 hours of sleep a night. Some kids, however, slept a lot more-or less-than others.
For the sixth graders, every hour of sleep above the 9.5-hour average was linked to a 20 percent lower risk of being obese. Sleep appeared doubly important for the third graders. Every extra hour of sleep they got was linked to a 40 percent drop in obesity.

It is very important for kids to be courageous. A brave child is more likely to withstand negative peer pressure, say no to temptations(诱惑) and fight the good fight. 1 It boosts kids' resilience(适应力), confidence and willpower as well as their learning, performance and school engagement. Here are several ways to develop kids' courage:
Set a model of courage. Kids who watch their parents stick their necks out to do the right thing are more likely to do the same. 2 Then express how good it feels when you conquer your fears instead of taking a shortcut. Your kids will learn how to take on the tough challenge they face by witnessing how you tackle your fears.
3 Research finds that kids are more likely to be courageous if they believe that their parents encourage them to support those in need. Discuss bravery with your kids: Tell them “Courage is making the choice to do what you know is right even if you are afraid.”
Ask your kids to share their acts of bravery. Learning to be brave takes practice, so encourage your children to do something courageous every day. 4 A mom I talked to had her kids share their brave deeds at dinner time.
Teach your kids how to reduce their fears. If not kept under control, fears can be powerful. 5 You might encourage positive self-talk, such as saying “I can handle this” or “I have courage to do this”. Or teach your children to take slow, deep breaths to find courage.
A.Talk about values and courage.
B.Courage has other surprising benefits.
C.The good news is that courage can be taught.
D.Teach your children simple strategies to be brave.
E.Let your children see you step out of your comfort zone.

The modern pizza was originally invented in Naples,Italy, but the word pizza is Greek in origin, derived from the Greek word pēktos meaning solid or clotted. The ancient Greeks covered their bread with oils, herbs and cheese. The first major innovation that led to flatbread pizza was the use of tomato as a topping. It was common for the poor of the area around Naples to add tomatoes to their yeast-based flatbread, and so the pizza began.
While it is difficult to say for sure who invented the pizza,it is however believed that modern pizza was first made by baker Raffaele Esposito of Naples. In fact,a popular urban legend holds that the archetypal(原型的) pizza,Pizza Margherita, was invented in 1890,when the Royal Palace of Capodimonte asked the Neapolitan pizzaiolo Raffaele Esposito to create a pizza in honor of the visiting Queen Margherita. Of the three different pizzas he created, the Queen strongly preferred a pie wrapped in the colors of the Italian flag: red(tomato), green(basil),and white(mozzarella).Supposedly, this kind of pizza was then named after the Queen as Pizza Margherita.
Later, the dish has become popular in many parts of the world:
?The first pizzeria,Antica Pizzeria Port'Alba, was opened in 1830 in Naples.
?In North America, the first pizzeria was opened in 1905 by Gennaro Lombardi at 53 Spring Street in New York City.
?The first Pizza Hut,the chain of pizza restaurants appeared in the United States in 1958.
?Nowadays, many varieties of pizza exist worldwide, along with several dish variants based upon pizza.

Children who drink more milk do not necessarily develop healthier bones, researchers said on Monday in a report that stresses exercise and modest consumption of calcium-rich (含钙丰富的) foods such as tofu and broccoli (花椰菜).
The report drew its conclusions from previously published studies and was written by researchers from the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, which advocates a strict vegetarian diet. “Under scientific study, the support for the milk myth is defeated. This analysis of 58 published studies shows that the evidence on which U.S. milk intake recommendations are based is scant.” said study author Dr. Amy Lanou in a statement.
The U.S. government has gradually increased recommendations for daily calcium intake, largely from milk products. But the Physicians Committee's report said increasing consumption of milk products was not necessarily the best way to provide the necessary calcium intake of at least 400 milligrams per day. Other ways to get the absorbable calcium found in one cup of cow's milk include a cup of orange juice, two packages of instant oats (燕麦), two-thirds cup of tofu, or 1-2/3 cups of broccoli, the report said. And it also pointed out that milk products provide 18 percent of the total fat energy and 25 percent of the total fat intake in the diets of American children who are developing increasing rates of obesity.
Frank Greer, who specializes in children's illnesses at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, said the ideal way to achieve the goal of healthy bones is to make sure children exercise and consume up to 1,300 milligrams a day of calcium.

I was once invited to a French friend's home to have dinner. But what happened during the dinner made me embarrassed.
First, I put my bread on the plate, making my friend confused because in France, people are supposed to put the bread on the table. Second, I picked up the whole piece of bread and ate it. However, taking a bite of bread after cutting it into pieces is considered to be polite. Although I found all the food was delicious, I just ate a small amount of it because I thought it would be rude to eat it up. On the contrary, it's polite to finish what is on your plate.
To avoid such an embarrassing situation, people should learn more about different table manners of the world.

It's that time of year again. It's the award show season. No, I'm not talking about the Pulitzer Prizes. ?I'm talking about the entertainment awards. Many stars get together at award ceremonies and winners are announced. My favourites are the Emmy Awards for television, the Academy Awards for the movies, and the Grammy Awards for records. I have attended many award shows—the Golden Globes, the SAG Awards, even the People's Choice Awards.
For some people, the best part of watching award shows is the preshow. Stars arrive on the red carpet and are interviewed.? Sometimes what they are wearing, made by the top designers and jewelers, gets more attention than what they say. But, ?as for me, the most exciting part is when the winners are announced. You never know what will come out of their mouths when they win.

Here are some top cities to visit in the world.
Cape Town, South Africa
Cape Town shines at the southern point of the African continent. Explore Table Mountain National Park, which spreads along the Atlantic coast from Signal Hill to Cape Point. At Boulders Beach near Cape Point, share the sand with nearly 3,000 African penguins. Within the national park is Lion's Head peak. Walk up Lion's Head for excellent views of the coast and Robben Island.
Zermatt, Switzerland
This Alpine Swiss city is most famous for the Matterhorn, a huge mountain with one of the highest summits (顶峰) in Europe. In its shadow is tiny Zermatt, a car-free town of just over 5,000 people. While winter is the most popular time for world-class skiing, summer is a great time to hike the surrounding Alps.
Barcelona, Spain
This magical city in the Catalonia region of Spain has everything from grand beaches to Antoni Gaudi's imaginative architecture. Take an hour-long train ride to the mountain of Montserrat and see the amazingly shaped rocks that influenced Gaudi's work.
Prague, Czech Republic
This Eastern European city is the modern capital of the Czech Republic and the historical capital of the Kingdom of Bohemia. Walk across the Charles Bridge and visit the John Lennon Wall to get a sense of the city's quiet revolutionary (革命的) soul. From the unique art of David Cerny—often hidden in plain sight—to the growing counterculture (反主流文化) scene, Prague is full of surprises.
Goreme, Turkey
This city is home to Goreme National Park, an open-air museum and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visit the 10th- and 11th-century cave churches that display rare examples of Byzantine art. Goreme is a popular destination for backpackers—travelers often on months-long trips. The area is also an excellent place to enjoy Turkish food and wine.

Over 100 years ago, German immigrants (移民) first started selling hot dogs at places like Coney Island's Nathan's Famous. This is the place where hot dogs were first sold in America, but then something interesting happened. People began making their own hot dogs, and people of every region put its unique things on the snack. So what are America's best hot dogs?
On our search for America's best hot dogs, we kept an eye out for places with a unique style of hot dogs. We made sure of considering online reviews from locals as well as the quality of the ingredients (作料). We also considered the entire experience, from driving up to the restaurant or stand to placing your order to taking that first bite.
We sorted through dozens of hot dog stands and restaurants in search of the best in America. In order to be included, the vendor needed to have a trademark (商标) dog, with toppings that add something extra. For example, Ben's Chili Bowl in Washington, D. C.doesn't only have a trademark frank (the half-smoke), but it also has a trademark topping (chili). It is thought highly of by locals and professional eaters alike, and eating there is a great experience. For these reasons, it's high on our list.
Sadly, there were some famous stands that didn't make the cut. While the original Nathan's Famous in Coney Island might very well be the most well-known hot dog stand in America, it didn't win a place on our best American hot dog list.
The stands that serve the best hot dogs are those ancient stands that have been serving the same exact product day in and day out for many years. People usually have to wait in line for one hot dog from such stands.

Feifei, an 11-year-old boy from Xuzhou, Jiangsu Province, suffered from a sudden acute eye disease which has almost led to blindness. The disease was caused by excessive(过度的)eye fatigue(疲劳) during the winter vacation, during which he played computer games for continuous 10 days and nights.
Many youngsters in China nowadays are increasingly addicted to computer games and other electronic products. This is followed by a series of health problems, with the most typical case being myopia, or nearsightedness.
According to the latest research report released by the World Health Organization(WHO), the myopia rate among Chinese teenagers ranks first in the world—70 percent of high school and college students. The rate is nearly 40 percent in primary school students, while it is only 10 percent for their peers in the United States.
There are at least 10 million people in China with severe myopia, and they are likely to get pathological(病理学的) myopia in middle age. Pathological myopia can't be treated with glasses or surgery, and it is one of the biggest factors that lead to blindness, Xu Xun, director of the ophthalmology(眼科学) department at Shanghai General Hospital, pointed out.
Experts explain that two major factors lead to the high rate of myopia among Chinese people. One is high academic pressure, and the other one is excessive use of electronic devices over a long period of time. Genetics, on the other hand, is not the main reason, as only 20 percent of Chinese people had myopia in the 1960s.
“Teenagers are now faced with severe academic pressure, which means they often study without natural light. This increases their risk of becoming nearsighted,” Xu said.
Experts suggest that youngsters maintain a proper balance between study and rest so as to protect their eyesight, and parents should play an active role in the process.

A warm drink of milk before bed has long been the best choice for those wanting a good night's sleep. But now a study has found it really does help people nod off—if it is milked from a cow at night.
Researchers have discovered that “night milk” contains more melatonin (褪黑激素), which has been proven to help people feel sleepy and reduce anxiety.
The study, by researchers from Seoul, South Korea, involved mice being fed with dried milk powder made from cows milked both during the day and at night.
Those given night milk, which contained 10 times the amount of melatonin, were less active and less anxious than those fed with the milk collected during daytime, according to the study published in The Journal of Medicinal Food.
Night milk quickened the start of sleep and caused the mice to sleep longer.
While the effect of cows milk harvested at different time has not been tested on humans up to now, taking melatonin drugs has been suggested to those who are struggling to fall asleep at night.
Previous studies have also indicated that milk can be excellent for helping sleep because of the calcium content, which helps people to relax.
Milk is also sugar-free and additive-free with nutritionists recommending skimmed milk as the best choice before bed as it is the least fattening. The more fat you take in before bedtime, the greater burden you will put on your body at night.

Every day, in hundreds of ordinary situations, actions speak far louder than words. We talk with our mouth, but we communicate with our facial expressions, our tone of voice and our whole body.
36 When we can read what others are saying unconsciously, we can deal with things—at work and at home before they become problems.
By understanding how to use body language, you can communicate more effectively. Here is how:
? 37 Throughout the day, notice details about the way you speak, gesture and move. When standing, keep your shoulders straight, your body open and your weight balanced on both feet.
?Work on your handshake. 38 The handshake most likely to show confidence is firm and dry with strong but not too much pressure.
?Use eye contact. Eye contact is very important in forming an impression of someone. You should have the ability to keep direct eye contact if you want to be taken seriously. But some people feel uncomfortable when it is too strong. 39
?Be yourself. Nonverbal(非言语的) messages come from deep inside you, from your own sense of self-respect. If you are comfortable with yourself, it shows. 40 They always give others a deep impression.
A.Use hand gestures carefully.
B.Pay attention to your bodytalk.
C.A mirror can be useful to examine facial expressions.
D.People who know who they are have a relaxed way of talking and moving.

One possible version:
Dear Mike,
I'm writing to ask you something about western food. As you know, I'm leaving for Britain next year. I will study and live in Britain for about two years. It is said that western food contains too much sugar, salt as well as oil, which causes people to put on weight easily. As a result, I'm very concerned about the food in your country. Not only do I expect to study in your country, but I also want to lead a healthy life. I would appreciate it if you write to me and tell me something about your food culture and how to eat in a healthy way in your country.
I'm looking forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
