Ⅰ.阅读理解
A
Before moving to Stockholm,I did my research on Sweden and was confident about my move. However,I quickly realized on my first day that so much of what I learned was so very wrong. There are many things that a Google search cannot show about Sweden.
The first is fika.A fika is taking a break from whatever you are doing to enjoy a coffee with friends.Swedes value community highly so it makes sense that they would like to set aside time each day to reconnect with others.Fika is a great time to meet new people as well as catch up with friends!
I grew up in the American South where everyone is very friendly.I found that little things like not being asked my life story at the coffee shop by the waiter upset me.However,Swedish people are not rude.Instead, they practice being lagom, which means “just enough.”
The winters can be very dark and cold,so the Swedish people do not take any sunny day for granted.Since the weather has been fine,I have found myself walking a lot around Stockholm.Often it is easiest to get from place to place by walking, which allows you to see so much of the city and enjoy the fresh air.Though it has been very tiring to get used to,it also has made me feel better about all of the kardem ummabullar that I have been eating!
I think it is important for students who want to study abroad to know that it is hard to move countries no matter how “similar” you may think they may be.You have to jump in with both feet and be patient with yourself as well as others. As long as you keep an open mind and are willing to learn, you will have a great experience!

To bring the Olympic spirit to developing nations in the late 1990s,the Olympic Committee allowed a small number of “wild card” athletes to join the Games. But because they didn’t have to go through any qualifying rounds to compete, when they arrived, not all of the competitors were prepared. One such athlete was a swimmer from Equatorial Guinea named Eric Moussambani. When Moussambani arrived at the 2,000 Sydney Games,he’d only been training for the 100-meter freestyle for about eight months. He’d also never been in an Olympic-size pool and had never raced more than 50 meters.Regardless,he was determined to represent his country.
The three wild-card athletes were given their own race, and Moussambani was next to the other two swimmers from Niger and Tajikistan. When the official called the swimmers to begin the game, both of Moussambani’s competitors were disqualified for false starts.Left to swim by himself,Moussambani dove in and dog paddled, breathing for air and moving his arms and legs.Halfway through the race, the situation looked so serious that the audience seriously worried he was drowning.
When Moussambani finally passed the finish line and pulled himself from the water, the applause thundered. His final time was 1:52.72 - more than twice that of swimmers in the previous race. But Moussambani couldn’t have been happier. He told reporters,“I’ m going to jump and dance all night long in celebration of my personal success.”
Moussambani’s courage and determination made him an Olympic celebrity (名人).He kept training for the 2004 Games and even got his time down to a respectable 57 seconds.

Chinese cuisine is widely known and enjoyed all around the world.Who doesn’t long for a favorite Chinese dish? But there is one interesting concept concerning Chinese food which is almost unheard in the West, and which is becoming increasingly ignored by the youth of the East- the ancient custom of tonic food.
Tonic food is food which is consumed to improve one’s health or avoid sickness. For instance,it was once the custom for new mothers to eat a sesame (芝麻) oil hotpot every day for the first month after giving birth. It was believed that this dish would benefit the muscles, reduce pain, improve circulation, stimulate sweating, and warm the body. Some foods, such as goat meat and spinach(菠菜),are seen as “hot”,while others, such as Chinese cabbage and radishes (小萝卜) are seen as “cold”.One should be careful not to eat too much of either “hot” or “cold” food. However, how much “hot” or“cold” food one should eat depends on the time of the year, how the food is prepared and what it is prepared with, and the individual’s health.
The custom of employing tonic food for a healthier life also influences the catering industry.Chinese herbal medicines, such as the wolfberry (枸杞子),can be found on many a restaurant menu, either added to fruit tea or as a beneficial addition to a dish. These herbs attract customers, such as overworked office staff,in need of a modest pick-me-up.

As a young boy,I knew what people said was not always what they meant or were feeling. And I knew it was possible to get others to do what I wanted if I read their real feelings and responded suitably to their needs. At the age of eleven,I sold sponge rubber (泡沫橡胶) door-to-door after school and quickly worked out how to tell if someone was likely to buy from me.When I knocked on a door,if someone told me to go away but their hands were open and they showed their palms (the inside surfaces of their hands),I knew it was safe to continue with my presentation (展示) because they weren’t angry or threatening although they may have a dismissive (不屑的) attitude. If someone told me to go away in a soft voice but used a pointed finger or closed hand,I knew it was time to leave.
As a teenager,I became a pots and pans (炊具) salesperson, and my ability to read people earned me enough money to buy my first house.Selling gave me the chance to meet people and study them close and to know whether they would buy or not, simply by watching their body language.

Most people are good at recognizing the universal facial expressions of our emotions—anger, joy, sadness, etc.,which present a lot of emotional information. In fact, there are less obvious facial expressions called micro-expressions (MEs).Human beings often show them and communicate their private thoughts to others unconsciously (无意识的).What’s more, people cannot hide them, including the experienced ones. And MEs have universality (普遍性),regardless of one’s age, religion or culture.
All the findings lead to the possibilities of MEs’ wide use in different fields, where people can use MEs to understand other people’s true feelings, thoughts,or beliefs.Police can use MEs to detect unnatural behavior.Teachers can recognize unease in students and give a more careful explanation.Businessmen can use expressions of happiness to determine when they have given a suitable price. When one wants to be able to do what are mentioned above,it is useful to be able to read MEs.
However,MEs are difficult to read, because they are unconscious, and occur sometimes as fast as one-tenth of a second or even one-fifteenth of a second. At present, even highly trained persons are not always able to notice them. Some people do see something that has changed on the face, but they don’t know exactly what it is that has changed.Since the human recognition accuracy (精准) is so low,a possible method for spotting MEs would be very precious.

5.Which word can replace the underlined word “detect” in Paragraph 2?
A.Discover. B.Show.
C.Govern. D.Affect.

答案: A
6.What makes it difficult for people to read MEs?
A.Absence of training.
B.MEs’ short existence.
C.MEs’ universality.
D.Cultural differences.
解析: 细节理解题。根据第三段中的“However,MEs are difficult to read, because they are unconscious, and occur sometimes as fast as one-tenth of a second or even one-fifteenth of a second.”可知,微表情很难被读懂,是因为它是无意识的,存在时间很短,一闪而过,故B项正确。
答案: B
7.What will probably be discussed in the next paragraph of the passage?
A.The meaning of MEs.
B.The importance of spotting MEs.
C.The application of MEs.
D.The approach to recognizing MEs.
解析: 推理判断题。根据最后一段最后一句话“Since the human recognition accuracy (精准)is so low,a possible method for spotting MEs would be very precious.”可知,由于人类的识别精度较低,因此一种可能的微表情识别方法将是非常宝贵的,因此文章接下来会承接上文,介绍微表情的识别方法,故D项正确。

Body Language in the United States
(2019·河南濮阳高一期末B)
Most people shake hands and make eye contact when they meet people for the first time.Among very good friends,a woman may give another woman a little hug,and a man may kiss a woman quickly on the cheek.Males don’t hug one another, which, however,is changing.Men usually shake hands with the right hand.Sometimes they use the left hand to either cover the handshake or lightly hold the other persons arm. This shows greater warmth and friendship. What’s more, most people wave hello or good-bye.This is important to know because in many other countries, the same movements mean “no”.
When people are waiting in a public place, such as the post office, they usually form lines. Some people get angry and complain if someone jumps ahead of other people. Moreover, many women like men to open doors for them. They also like men to give up their seats on public transportation. However, some women do not like this type of behavior. They feel that men and women should be treated in the same way.
In the United States,it’s important to make direct eye contact in business and social situations. If you don’t make eye contact, people will probably think that you are bored or not interested. If there is silence in these situations, people usually try to make conversation.People in the United States usually stand about one arm’s length away from each other while talking or standing together. This space is called “the comfort zone”.
In the United States, mothers sometimes show that they are angry with children by shaking an index finger (食指) at them.People may show that they like children by patting them on the head.

The world’s first-ever floating farm is expected to open soon. The farm is located in Rotterdam,a port city about 50 miles away from Amsterdam.Built near the mouth of the river Meuse, the farm consists of three levels.About 40 cows will be moved to the second level of the farm in November. The level above them will house greenhouses that grow grass and crops needed to feed the cows.Meanwhile, the bottom level will hold any necessary machines and packaging for the milk and yogurt.By December, the farm is expected to be producing more than 200 gallons of milk per day.In addition to producing fresh milk and yogurt, the farm produces and sells fresh food that runs through a closed cycle and ends up at the customer. This causes almost no waste and enables the customer to become familiar with healthy, fresh products.
The farm is the idea of Minkevan Wingerden,a partner in the development company behind the project,Beladon. In 2012,she and her husband got caught in Hurricane Sandy during a business trip to New York City. With the storm preventing food delivery trucks from getting on the road, local people were unable to find fresh produce in stores.
The event pushed Wingerden and her partners to find a way to produce food closer to people’ locations in order to avoid losses of supplies in the future. They eventually came up with the idea of floating farms, which would make use of otherwise unused space in the water and meanwhile shorten the distance between stores and farms.
Since the floating farms can be used in certain climates, there’s also possibility to area more of them in port cities around the world. The company is already looking to open similar farms in Singapore and China. It is also working on designs for floating chicken farms and floating farming greenhouses.

At the age of seven, while his friends were spending their allowance on things like candy and toys,Jose Adolfo Quisocola was busy saving money for basic purchases. To try to get his peers (同龄人) to do the same, the boy from Peru came up with the idea of an eco-bank,the Bartselana Student Bank, which allows kids of all ages to become financially independent while also helping the environment.
Set up in 2012,the bank is the world’s first bank for kids.To become a member,a kid has to bring in at least 5 kilograms of solid waste and set a savings goal.Once accepted all bank “partners” are required to deposit at least one additional kilogram of recyclables on a monthly basis and observe other requirements, such as attending financial education and environmental management workshops.
The waste accumulated is sold to local recycling companies, which, thanks to Jose’s efforts, pay a higher-than-market rate for everything brought in by the bank members. The money received is placed in the personal account where they collect until the savings goal is reached. The account holder can then withdraw the money,or choose to leave it and make it continue to grow for a bigger target.“At the beginning,my teachers thought I was crazy or that a child could not undertake this type of project,” Jose recalls.“They did not understand that we are not the future of the country but its present.Luckily,I had the support of the school headmaster and an assistant in my class.”
The boy’s efforts paid off,and by 2013,the bank had over 200 members, who brought in one ton of recyclable waste.Today, the eco-bank,which now has the support of several local institutions, boasts ten educational centers. They are designed to teach over 3,000 students, aged 10 to 18,to become financially independent, use their money wisely, and help the environment.
Not surprisingly,Jose’s efforts have earned him several national and international awards. On November 20.2018,Jose won Children’s Climate Prize, which comes with a medal and $5,500 in prize money and is given to a child or youth who has accomplished an extraordinary achievement for the climate or environment.

I sometimes find that watching a film adaptation (改编作品) of a book helps me to understand the story of a book. This is especially true for books from a different period or with a difficult dialect. My favourite example of these is Pride and Prejudice, which is also my favourite book.
Film and TV adaptations of books also mean that books reach a wider audience, prompting (促使) people to read the book if they really liked the film.In terms of language learning, watching film or TV adaptations of books can help to provide an understanding of a story that may have otherwise (否则) been difficult to understand. They also help to give a story a more modern twist (转折),for example Oliver! As an adaptation of Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist. The language in the book can be enough to reduce a native speaker to tears, but the adaptation allows everyone to enjoy the story of the child Oliver.Similarly, the 1996 film Romeo and Juliet,an adaptation of the Shakespeare play of the same name, enables those of us who haven’t studied Shakespeare to still enjoy his play.
Of course, there are limitations and not every story that is translated onto the screen is liked by the many fans of the book,or even the author. For example, the author of the book Mary Poppins,P.L.Travers,hated Disney’s adaptation, but it is now a well-loved work. One of my least favourite adaptations is that of Still Alice by Lisa Genova. They changed the location from Boston to New York for no real reason, which for some readers changes the whole feel of the book.
In my opinion, adaptations are a great way to introduce people to the story and characters of a book before reading it.They’re also a good way for people who may not feel confident enough to read a whole novel in a different language, but still want to enjoy a specific story.

Three French students, using the name “Obvious”, have produced the first artwork created mainly by a computer program to be sold at auction (拍卖).Using artificial intelligence (AI),Obvious created 11 portraits (肖像画) of an imaginary family they called Belamy.
Obvious used 15,000 real portraits to train an AI program which has two parts. One part tries to create pictures that look real. The other part judges the work.If the portrait doesn’t look real enough, the first part goes back and changes its decisions until it comes up with a better picture. These decisions are controlled by an algorithm (计算程序).The students made many choices, helping guide the AI’s decisions. But even so,the painting is “signed”by the algorithm, instead of the students.
On October 25,Obvious’s picture,Edmond de Belamy, was sold at auction at Christie’s in New York. The final price for Edmond de Belamy was $432,500—about ten times more than Christie’s expected.
This is not the first AI artwork, just the first one sold at auction. In fact, many people are not impressed with the portrait.“The work isn’t interesting,or original,”says 19-year-old Robbie Barrat. He should know.He wrote much of the program that created the pictures.
But he doesn’t like the idea of Obvious selling the picture. He thinks it’s too simple and gives a bad idea of what real AI artists are doing. He points out that he created many pictures like these over a year ago.
Obvious doesn’t hide the fact that it used Mr.Barrat’s work,or even that its portrait is not the best AI artwork ever.Pierre Fautrel of Obvious said,“...the goal of our project was to do something that was simple enough for...my mother or brother to understand.”
Obvious got the attention of Christie’s by selling another work,Le Comte de Belamy, for over $11,000 in February. One reason Christie’s chose to auction Obvious’s work is because AI art is unusual now.In the future it will be much more common.

Test-taking tips
Passing tests is a huge part of succeeding at school.Clearly,if you want to do well on a test, you need to prepare by learning the material (资料). 36
Just breathe.
Even the best prepared student sometimes gets nervous before a test.Nervous feelings can cause people to forget facts that they know. 37 Breathing deeply is helpful for this.So is moving your body slightly, such as by rolling your shoulders around.Try to arrive for a test a few minutes early,so you can relax before it starts.
38
When you are handed a test, look over all the questions before you begin.Read them carefully, noticing details. Also pay attention to how many points each question is worth.Divide your time based on the percentage of your grade each question is worth.
First answer questions you know and then go back to the difficult ones. 39 But try to write an answer for every question on the test, even if you’re not sure of the answer. The only exception (例外) is if you will lose points for wrong answers.
40 If you’re not sure whether you should change an answer,it’s best not to.More often than not, your first instinct (本能) will be correct.
Try your best.
Above all, study well and try your best.If you do that, you can be proud of whatever score you get.
A.Pay attention to the time.
B.Read the test through first.
C.So one important test-taking tip is to try to relax.
