On the third Sunday in June,Americans take time to recognize and thank a special person in the family—fathers!Father’s Day celebrates the importance of fathers, young and old and the men thought of as father figures.
The words“the child is father of the man”come from William Wordsworth’s poem My Heart Leaps Up.“It means people’s personalities form when they are children. They will most likely have the same qualities as an adult that they had as a child.”
Used in everyday speech, one could say,“In his case, the child was father of the man;he loved nature as a child and now works as a botanist(植物学家)”.
Let’s say you want to tell a child a story about something that happened long before they were born. You could say it happened when they“were just a twinkle in their father’s eyes.”This expression has a humorous and dreamy feel. Here, the word“twinkle”suggests the interest your father had in your mother.
When a much older man is interested in a much younger woman and supports her with his money,he is called her “sugar daddy”.The money part is very important—that’s the sugar.
Sometimes fathers are not a good influence or active in the lives of the children. In that case,a person may look for a father figure,a man who is not actually the person’s father but who acts like one.
The relationship between a man and his son can be complex. But the relationship between a father and daughter is often simpler. The expression “daddy’s little girl” is understood to mean that,in a father’s eyes, his daughter can do no wrong.
There is usually not a dry eye at any wedding during the traditional father-and-daughter dance, especially if they are dancing to a song like Michael Buble’s “Daddy’s Little Girl.”

If you are a fruit grower—or would like to become one—take advantage of Apple Day to see what’s around. It’s called Apple Day but in practice it’s more like Apple Month. The day itself is on October 21,but since it has caught on,events now spread out over most of October around Britain.
Visiting an apple event is a good chance to see,and often taste,a wide variety(各种各样的) of apples. To people who are used to the limited choice of apples such as Golden Delicious and Royal Gala in supermarkets,it can be quite an eye opener to see the range of classical apples still in existence, such as Decio which was grown by the Romans.Although it doesn’t taste of anything special,it’s still worth a try,as is the knobbly (多疙瘩的) Cat’s Head which is more of a curiosity than anything else.
There are also varieties developed to suit specific local conditions. One of the very best varieties for eating quality is Orleans Reinette, but you’ll need a warm, sheltered place with perfect soil to grow it,so it’s a_pipe_dream for most apple lovers who fall for it.
At the events, you can meet expert growers and discuss which ones will best suit your conditions, and because these are family affairs, children are well catered for with apple-themed fun and games.
Apple Days are being held at all sorts of places with an interest in fruit, including stately gardens and commercial orchards(果园).If you want to have a real orchard experience, try visiting the National Fruit Collection at Brogdale, near Faversham in Kent.

Sweetest Day is celebrated on the third Saturday in October as a day to make someone happy. It is an occasion which offers all of us an opportunity to remember not only the sick, the aged, and children who have lost their parents, but also friends, workmates, relatives and neighbors whose helpfulness and kindness we have enjoyed.
Over 60 years ago, when a Cleveland man noticed that some people, such as children who lost their parents and patients who lay in bed,too often felt forgotten and neglected(忽视),he developed in his mind the idea of showing them that they were remembered. He did this by giving them small gifts. With the help of his friends and neighbors,he gave those people small gifts on a Saturday in October.During the years that followed, other Clevelanders began to take part in the celebration, which came to be called “Sweetest Day”.Over time, the Sweetest Day idea of spreading cheer to the poor, the sick and children who had lost their parents was broadened to include everyone, and became an occasion for remembering others with a kind act or a small gift.Soon the idea spreaded to other cities all over the USA.
Sweetest Day is not based on any single group’s religious beliefs or on a family relationship. It is a reminder that a thoughtful word or deed enriches life and gives it meaning.
Because for many people remembering takes the form of gift giving,Sweetest Day offers us the opportunity to show others that we care,in a positive (积极的) way.

India is known for many colorful and fun festivals. But none is as popular as the festival of lights,Diwali, which is also called Deepavali.
The celebration begins on October 21st,with Dhanteras. For those who love shopping, this is the best day of the celebration. That’s because in addition to honoring Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth, the day is also considered lucky to buy everything—from gold and silver ornaments (装饰品) to new clothes.
The following day is Kali Chaudas,or Narak Chaturdashi. For some Indians it is celebrated with good food and fireworks. For others,it is the time to drive out bad spirits from homes. No matter how it is celebrated, everyone’s mind is already focused(集中) on the big day that comes after—Diwali!
Diwali begins with a visit to temples where prayers (祷告) will be given. Then families and friends get together and celebrate by exchanging gifts and sweets. Those who missed the opportunity to buy gold on Dhanteras can make_up_for_it on this equally lucky day.In the evening, households light up their homes with oil lamps and prepare delicious Indian food. Then starts the real fun—fireworks! What makes the displays exciting is that everyone gets to create his/her own show by lighting up their favorite fireworks.
For Indians,Diwali also marks the end of the year. They will celebrate the first day of the New Year the following day.
The final day of the festival honors the relationships between brothers and sisters and is celebrated with more special food and prayers.

My grandfather Andy Anderson is 99.His life story is one for the big screen—he met my grandmother on a Saturday, and they married on the following Saturday. They stayed together until my grandma died 67 years later.
Without going to college,Andy worked his way to the top.He became the manager of the dairy department of Safeway. He earned the nickname Mr.Cheese, which eventually turned into Grandpa Cheese among the family. He has taught me a lot and here’s what he has learned in his 99 years.
Always maintain a good sense of humor.Find something humorous in every single situation.Never be too good to start at the bottom.Exercise every day, even when you don’t feel like it.Don’t spend more money than you make.Save your money now and spend it later.
You must be able to forgive, even if it’s difficult to do.Love is not always easy;sometimes you have to work at it.Your family is the most precious thing you will ever have in life.
If you’re faced with a problem, don’t delay trying to figure it out.But if there’s no way to figure it out,you have to forget about it.Make sure you’re doing what you loves;don’t be afraid to follow those dreams you have for yourself.
School education is important, but not necessary.Life can be an education in itself.Explore your world and stay curious.Having a bad job is better than having no job at all.Try not to take yourself so seriously.Don’t ever be afraid to be your true self.Your life is delicate, and if you fail to take care of yourself properly, you’ll spoil.
Life is a gift that you must unwrap (打开).It’s up to you to determine if what’s inside will lead you to happiness or dismay(沮丧).You have the power to make that decision for yourself.
All of above come from Grandpa Cheese. If you’re wondering what Grandpa Cheese is up to these days,he’s riding his motorized scooter(踏板车) around Benicia,CA,and “planning on what I’m going to do when I start to get old,” he says.

In 1905,Anna Jarvis began a campaign to convince lawmakers to choose a special day to honor America’s mothers. Many individual states began celebrating Mother’s Day in 1911.However,it was not until 1914 that President Woodrow Wilson finally managed to persuade the US Congress to set aside the second Sunday of May to honor moms.
The former US President announced it as a day to publicly express our love and respect for the mothers of the country.Little did he know that Americans would agree with his wishes by changing Mother’s Day into the third biggest customer spending event of the year—right after winter holidays and the back-to-school season.
This year,Americans expect to spend $21.4 billion,or about $172.22 per person. This is slightly higher than last year’s record of $21.2 billion and is almost a 60% increase in spending since 2009.So what do we spend all the money on?
According to a survey carried out by the National Retail Foundation,a large amount of the money will be spent on jewelry ($4.2 billion),meals, and other outdoor activities ($4.1 billion).Flowers, accessories, and electronics (电子设备) are the next favorite gift choices, with about $2 billion spent on each.CDs,personal services like spa days, and housewares (家庭用品) are some of the other gifts that moms receive from their loved ones on this special day.
Not sure what to get for Mom?A recent survey made by Offers.com showed that mothers prefer gifts that are personal. This means that you do not have to spend a large sum of money to make your mom happy.A handmade card or a photo of a special memory you shared with her will do the trick. What’s more, set aside all your electronics and spend the day just laughing with your mom.Besides making her day,it will also be fun!

Living abroad brings many challenges. One of them is looking for the best way to get used to a new culture while not losing your identity. In this process I have noticed that it’s very positive to be in touch with expats, especially with expats from your own country. Why?Read on.
I have been in Germany for one year and I have had many experiences. Some of them were more positive than others. But when unexpected things happened,it was nice to meet with other Colombians to listen to their experiences.Through this exchange,I have realized that others have felt the same, and that I am not the only one who has had difficulties.I also believe that they, too, have taken something from my experience.
Colombians are really friendly and usually don’t have any problems with meeting new people. This has helped me to increase my social network quickly. When I arrived in Germany,I had two Colombian friends here, and I have kept in touch with one of them who helped me to meet other people, not only Colombians.
Most likely,if you are a foreigner in Germany, your native language is not German. This is the way it is in my case.My native language is Spanish and I really enjoy speaking it.But it’s even better when I can share my opinions, thoughts, and worries with other expats,or when I can talk about topics which would not seem interesting to local Germans.Besides,it’s possible to use lines and jokes that only those who come from the same country or the same corner of the world can understand.
I like social networks and since I arrived in Germany,I have been connected with other expats through Facebook,Twitter and Instagram. On these social networks,I can communicate with others and share my experiences.Meanwhile,I also find interesting information that I don’t usually get in other forms of media, such as information about jobs, flats, language courses, offers of Colombian products and events which are not in the local newspapers.

Almost every night for more than ten years,Kirk Alexander,48,of Salem,Oregon, ordered dinner from his local restaurant Domino’s Pizza. Then one day,he stopped calling.
“It had been several days,” Domino’s general manager Sarah Fuller said,“which is not like him.”
Sarah had known Kirk since 2009.Many Domino’s delivery drivers regularly made the short trip to Kirk’s house, about six minutes away. She knew he worked from home and that he hardly went outside. She also knew that he had suffered health problems in the past.Sarah was worried.Perhaps something was wrong.
Around 1 am on Sunday,May 8,Sarah sent delivery driver Tracey Hamblen to Kirk’s home.Tracey approached the door as he had countless times before and knocked. He could plainly see the TV set and lights were on,but after several minutes,Kirk still hadn’t answered the door.Tracey called Kirk. The call went straight to voice mail.
Tracey then called 911,and soon officers were on their way. When they arrived at Kirk’s house, they heard a man calling for help from inside. They broke down the door and found Kirk on the floor in need of immediate medical attention after suffering from what Sarah said was a stroke. One day later, and they might have been too late.

The day after Thanksgiving is the start of the holiday shopping season.Thanksgiving is always on a Thursday,so the day after is a Friday. This day has come to be known as Black Friday. It has been the busiest shopping day of the year since 2005.
Most stores offer great deals on Black Friday. They open their doors very early in the morning. They try to attract shoppers with big discounts. Some products like TVs are much cheaper than usual.Stores may even lose money on these products. They hope that shoppers will buy gifts for other people while they are in the store.
Black Friday is a great time to get good deals. The problem is that there are not enough low-priced products to go around. Each store may only have a few.People stand in long lines to get such great deals, but not everyone who wants one will get one. Some people look crestfallen as they leave.
Some Black Friday events have been violent.Large crowds have trampled (踩踏) workers.Fights have broken out over toys or people cutting in line. But most Black Friday events are safe and fun.Still,if you plan on going, expect large crowds.

Parents often tell kids that playing video games will harm their brains. But last June a study found the opposite—certain video games can give your brain help.Researchers from the University of Montreal,in Canada, asked a group of people to play Super Mario 64 for 90 hours over the course of about 10 weeks. They found that those people experienced growth in the part of the brain that is responsible for memory.
But many people think that there’s nothing good about looking at a screen for hours at a time. They say that playing sports, reading, and doing other activities can give you the same benefits (好处) that playing video games does.Plus, some video games can be harmful. The study from the University of Montreal also found that playing shooter games like Call of Duty has a different influence from playing Super Mario 64—it causes the area of the brain that’s responsible for memory to shrink (缩小).
Here’s what two of our readers think.
Playing video games can be beneficial because it requires skills like problem-solving,strategic (战略上的) thinking, and sometimes teamwork.A study by researchers at the University of Glasgow,in Scotland, found that playing video games improves your communication skills and ability to find ways to solve problems.Video games can also help you become more creative. For example,Minecraft requires you to think outside the box and build things with materials you never even knew existed (存在).You can build your dream house! Some schools are even using Minecraft to teach topics like math and computer science.
——Mackenzle Reldy,Nebraska
Playing video games takes time away from other more important things.I used to spend a lot of time playing them.Sometimes that kept me from doing things I needed to do,like studying my spelling words.Playing video games can also be bad for your health.Last year, researchers studied kids and teens in Canada who play video games. They found a connection between playing video games for hours before going to bed and being overweight.
