Ⅰ.阅读理解

My grandmother has lived alone for more than twenty-five years.“Why don’t you and Craig come over for dinner?” she often asks.“I’ve made meatloaf (烘肉卷).” “Sure, that sounds great!” I often say.And then I call my husband and ask him to stop at my grandmother’s.Sometimes he has already passed her town, but there is no such thing as “driving out of the way” when it comes to her cooking.
I don’t remember the first time when I ate the meatloaf, but I do remember that I was very young at that time. It’s not something that I eat anywhere else. And I certainly don’t order it at restaurants. As a rule,I don’t even eat that much meat.It is the most delicious food that has ever entered my mouth.Best served when fresh from the oven, the first bite is always soft and tender.Maybe if I had her recipe,I could explain it more precisely.
Last July,my grandmother called to ask me what I wanted for my birthday. That was an easy enough question to answer.“I would like meatloaf!” I said.“I think I can do that,”she said.On my twenty-ninth birthday,my husband,my parents and I gathered around my grandmother’s table. We ate slice after slice. Then she gave me some meatloaf to take home.I didn’t want to share it with my husband, but I did.It was a great birthday.
This year was a big one.I turned thirty.“Let’s go out for dinner,” my husband suggested.“Don’t you want something special?” my mom asked.I wanted my grandmother’s meatloaf. That would make it special. My grandmother went shopping for ground beef, potatoes, and a couple of heads of cabbage. And on the night of my birthday,we gathered at my parents’ house for dinner. It was a fabulous dinner.

Canadians have a global reputation (名声) for being polite.A survey ranked Canada first out of 50 countries. Most Canadians think that while being polite can be a superficial attitude when people are communicating with friends and strangers, being “kind” to others generally requires a much greater effort and truly shows who you are as a person.
A national survey made by Environics Research Group for Coca-Cola Canada shows that on average each Canadian has shown kindness to others through random (随意的) actions four times in the last four weeks.Examples of their kindness include things such as opening a door for a stranger, offering to carry heavy items or giving up your seat for someone else in a public bus.
With millions of acts of kindness happening every day, most Canadians surveyed felt kind folks deserved more recognition for their actions.Coca-Cola Canada has decided to praise some very special individuals who make others happy with good acts in their own communities. The goal is to share their stories to help inspire (鼓舞) others to give a little kindness too.
“When it comes to kindness, seeing really is believing,” says Carolyn Harty,Senior Brand Manager of Coca-Cola.“More than half of Canadians are inspired to pay it forward themselves when they see others making a kind gesture. It is these small acts of kindness that make a large difference and inspire people and create happiness.”
Sixteen-year-old Sheliza Kassam, from Canada, decided on her thirteenth birthday that instead of gifts, she and her family would help feed families in need. Her small action became larger and developed into a non-profit organization that Sheliza now runs to hold birthday parties for children living in shelters who otherwise would not be able to celebrate their special day.
Another teen Nathan Unrau started out with a one-time school charity project that just couldn’t stop. With the support of his parents,Lunches with Love has become a non-profit organization that makes and gives away 450 paper bag lunches to the local homeless people every other Saturday.

“The world should help Africa invest (投资) in the health and education of Africa’s younger generation to help fight poverty,”said Bill Gates, whose foundation released its annual report on Tuesday. The report measured progress towards achieving UN poverty-reducing goals in 2030.The report tracks 18 data points on UN development goals, including child deaths,HIV,extreme poverty, and so on.
While the poverty rate is decreasing globally, the fast population growth in Africa could delay that progress. Therefore,it could even rise, the report warms.“If those investments were made properly, young Africans will help develop the economy and the population growth will fall,as has been the case in other countries,” said the report.
The report showed that by 2050,over 40% of extremely poor people in the world will live in just two countries:Congo and Nigeria.“The challenge of population growth in Africa leads to a simple idea that the world should help Africa invest in the health and the education of this young generation in Africa,” Gates told journalists.Asked how to meet the growing population and poverty challenge,Gates said improving access to birth control was the key.
In its family planning section, the report called on policymakers to enable women to have the right to choose the number of children they have, and when they have them.According to UN data,Africa will account for over half of the world’s population growth by 2050.Yet if every woman in Africa could decide the number of their children, the population increase could be 30% smaller.
This would also enable more girls and women to stay in school longer, get married and have children later.Smaller families tend to be healthier and more productive.
The report also mentioned great progress from Brazil on nutrition,Indonesia for family planning and Vietnam for the quality of education.

In the UK,most children have their midday meal at school, but in many schools, parents can choose what their children eat.The children can have a school lunch—a hot, cooked meal;or they can take a packed lunch with them, which usually includes cold food like sandwiches.
Often parents prepare lunches on_the_basis_of what their children want.Cathy,a mother of three children, told us,“My children have packed lunches, because they say they hate school dinners.I make 3 packed lunches every morning,so we’re like a sandwich bar in our kitchen in the morning.”
However, another mother,Susan, made her choice based on the nutritious value of the food. She said,“My daughter always has school dinners.I think she probably gets healthier food by having a cooked lunch at school than she would if I made sandwiches.”
But how healthy are school dinners?Kaz,a father, wasn’t impressed with them.“Fizzy (有泡沫的) drinks were offered and I think there were a lot of chips.”
The question of how healthy school food is was brought to Jamie Oliver, who launched a campaign to improve children’s nutrition, after spending a year working in a school kitchen. The TV series about the campaign won an award this week.
He was horrified (惊恐的) at the junk food he saw being served, which included burgers, pizza and chips. He decided to ban the junk, and started cooking good stews (炖菜) and curries for the children instead.
Jamie improved the school dinners in that particular school, and trained the dinner ladies to cook healthy food. Then he put pressure on the government to improve the standards of school food across the country. And it looks as if the changes have begun.

(2019·潍坊高一检测)
The number of overweight people around the world is increasing. For example,in China the number rose from 9 percent to 15 percent between 1989 and 1992.The increases in Latin America and Europe were similar. However, the most worrying statistic is the increase in the number of overweight children. In America, almost 33 percent of children under five are overweight. In some parts of Europe, the rate is almost 30 percent.Even developing countries have problems. In Egypt,Chile and Armenia, for example, the rate is over 5 percent.
The problem is the change in our diets combined with the change in our lifestyles. We used to eat whole grains, vegetables, and fruit. Now we eat foods that contain a lot of fat and sugar.Experts (专家) say that it isn’t surprising that people eat too much of the wrong foods.Everywhere we look there are advertisements for high-calorie,high-fat foods. These foods are low in nutrition but also low in cost.In other words, they may not be good for us,but they are really cheap. Some experts call this a toxic-food(有毒的食品) environment. Most of us do not realize this unhealthy environment. Therefore,we believe if we are fat,it’s our responsibility. This is not completely true.
Today, many food companies are focusing on developing countries. In 1998,one soft-drink company told its employees that “Africa is a land of chance for us.”The largest American fast-food company opens five new restaurants every day;four of them are located outside the United States.
It is terrible to think that we may soon live in a world where everyone eats fast food and drinks soda. However,it is not unavoidable.Governments should educate their people about the dangers of eating the wrong food. This is particularly important for tomorrow’s adults.

You already know a number of things that can reduce your chances of getting various types of cancer.Avoiding tobacco (烟草) products is an important thing, but have you ever considered your choice of dinner time as a reason for your risk of cancer?Probably not,but new research suggests that you might want to consider it.
A new study published in the International Journal of Cancer discovers some very interesting connection between people’s time for dinner and their overall risks of developing certain types of cancers, including breast and prostate cancer, which are among the largest killers of women and men.
“Modern life involves mistimed sleeping and eating patterns that are connected with poor health effects in experimental studies,” the researchers explain.“We assessed(评估)whether the time for meals is connected with breast and prostate cancer risks,in consideration of the lifestyle and chronotype (生物钟).”
The research mainly focuses on how long a person eats their last meal of the day before bedtime.People who eat before 9 pm or eat at least a couple of hours before hitting_the_sack have lower risks of developing cancers. The scientists assess that these people enjoy a 20% drop in cancer risks when compared to those who eat dinner after 10 pm or eat right before climbing into bed.
The researchers followed the habits of thousands of people and tracked their nighttime eating habits and whether they developed cancer over the long term or not.The numbers seem to reflect that it is beneficial to have dinner earlier if you hope to avoid some of the more common types of cancer, but the researchers still don’t know exactly why that’s true.At the moment, they believe circadian rhythm, which is the patterns of daily activity and sleep that humans have established over hundreds of thousands of years,is playing a role, though they can’t say exactly how at present.

Living a healthy lifestyle lies in forming the right eating habits. Here are some of the good habits you can develop when it comes to healthy eating.
Drink plenty of water. You must drink at least 8 glasses of water a day.You may need even more water if you are in a hot environment or if you are exercising.
Eat breakfast.Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.A recent study has shown that those who eat breakfast will consume (消耗)an average of 100 calories less during the day than their colleagues who skipped breakfast. They will also be able to concentrate better.
Don’t skip lunch. If you do so,your blood sugar level will drop and your metabolism (新陈代谢) will slow down. When you get home you are starving and eat everything you can find.
We all need to snack from time to time, but please choose your snacks carefully. In fact,it’s a good idea to eat two healthy snacks besides your three main meals.Choose healthy snacks like fruit and vegetables, low fat yogurt, cottage cheese with apple sauce, and so on.
Eat your fruit and vegetables. We should eat at least 5 servings of fruit and vegetables a day.Take a piece of fruit for a snack, add some banana and raisins to your favourite breakfast cereal, have a salad for lunch, and eat at least one vegetable at dinner each night.
Do not eat your dinner too late.Try to eat dinner at least 3 hours before you go to bed. This will give your body a chance to digest most of the food before you rest for the next 8 hours.Plan dinner for the week ahead of time and make sure you have everything you need in the house so other family members can get a head start on dinner if you have a late meeting at the office.

One day,a patient came to see me.He worked as a waiter in a restaurant and his problem was acid reflux (胃酸倒流),a disease that influences as many as 40 percent of Americans,a marked increase in recent years.Reflux can lead to esophageal (食道的) cancer, which has increased by about 500 percent since the 1970s.The drugs we use to treat reflux don’t always work and may even increase the risk of developing cancer when used long term.
What is responsible for these worrying developments? For one,our poor diet, with its huge increases in the intake of sugar, fat, soft drinks, and unhealthy foods. But another important fact has been overlooked:dinnertime.Over the past twenty years, the time of my patients’evening meals has become later and later.Dinner-already pushed back by longer work hours- is often further delayed (推迟) by activities such as shopping and exercise.
In my experience, the single most important treatment for reflux is to avoid late eating.A patient with reflux came to see me because her father and uncle died of esophageal cancer, and she was afraid of getting it too.Her nightly routine (常规) included a 9 pm dinner with at least two bottles of red wine. The reflux was serious, and changes were needed.
She listened, then did not come back to see me for a year.“For the first two months,I just hated you,” she told me,“and for the next two months,I was having some trouble eating.I guessed I was going to die of esophageal cancer.” Then she added,“You know,we’re the reason that it’s not so easy to get 6 pm reservations (预约) at the good restaurants anymore.”
To stop the increase in reflux disease,we have to stop eating at least three hours before bed.As for my waiter patient?I told him to eat dinner before 7 pm.Within six weeks, his reflux was gone.

I always wanted to be a firefighter. It seemed exciting to me.I like to be outside, lift heavy things and sleep on the ground!
In college,I got a job with the forest service. My first week on the job, they asked if I wanted to get my red card (training for forest fires).I said yes!
The training was a week long.I learned about the different types of fire crews (工作人员) and I remember the instructor saying hotshots were the top dogs.He said they had the most difficult and dangerous job and that you had to really prove yourself in order to be a hotshot.I was sold.I didn’t want to do anything else!
However, hotshot crews don’t hire (雇佣) people without fire experience.I returned home from training to Logan where the Logan Hotshots are based.I walked in and told the boss I wanted to be a hotshot and they should keep me in mind if they needed anyone.
The very next day I got a note saying the Hotshots were looking for me! A woman on their crew got injured and they needed a replacement...they were headed to a fire that day. They thought of me because I had just been there the day before.
We arrived at the fire near Provo,Utah at about 10 pm that night. We ended up working 40 hours, digging fire lines.I think I fell asleep standing up against my tool at one point.
My feet were covered in blisters (水泡) and the helicopter (直升机) that was supposed to pick us up at the top of the mountain broke down and we had to walk miles!
To my delight, the crew liked me and hired me after that.I also met my husband that night! How cool is that!

Certain countries have taken strict action on smoking by completely banning it.However, people across the world still do not take it seriously.Around the world, about 10 million cigarettes are bought a minute,15 billion are sold each day,and over 5,000 billion are produced and used per year.
If people out on the streets or in front of super-markets smoke openly, others passing by these smokers will breathe the smoke unwillingly, which can increase their risks of getting health problems unfortunately. In fact, one little cigarette contains about 7,000 chemicals,69 of which have been proven to cause cancers.Cigarette smoke without doubt does no good to humans.Worldwide tobacco (烟草) causes 6 million deaths per year, and that means there is one death every 5 seconds.
Cigarettes are made from tobacco leaves. They originally take in all the carbon from the air as they grow. When you smoke them, you’re just returning the carbon to the air. Thus, cigarettes increase the detrimental chemicals in the air that finally damage the quality of the air.To tell the truth, the air pollution caused by cigarettes is 10 times greater than that by cars.
I have already made sure that smoking pollutes the air,but unfortunately, the damage to the environment does not stop there. It’s estimated that 1.69 billion pounds of cigarette butts (烟头) become rubbish each year. The rubbish can almost be found everywhere, which is the most ignored problem of the cigarettes.About 2 million of these cigarette butts are found in water, which results in the death of some animals. The cigarette butts that are thrown away carelessly can be dangerous to animals both on land and in the sea.
The only measure that we can take to improve this situation is to stop smoking and more importantly,to stop littering (乱扔) cigarette butts.Take care of yourself and take care of the environment by putting a stop to smoking.

Fasting (禁食) for weight loss is considered by many people as a way to lose weight quickly and easily. It is because that people even don’t have to take any exercise. The truth is that fasting for weight loss is not safe for the body.In addition, the weight that is lost during a fasting period is often water weight which may be gained right back as soon as one returns to a normal diet.Supporters believe that it cleans the body, makes the weight lost quickly, increases energy, and improves the appearance of skin.
There are a number of different programs advertising fasting for weight loss;juice fasts are common, but there are a number of others that use ingredients such as honey, lemon or pepper,as the only source of nutrients (营养物) for a day or more.Typically, true fasts where one is having nothing but liquids do not last more than three days. But fasts where participants may eat a small meal a day consisting of vegetables, fruits,or whole grains may last longer. However, many people attempt to use fasting for weight loss although there are some possible dangers.
First, fasting for weight loss causes an upsetstomach and diarrhea (腹泻).If left untreated, this canlead to dehydration(脱水),which has the possibility of causing death. It is important not to exercise when fasting, because the body does not have the energy to increase the heart rate to a higher level, which proves the belief that fasting increases energy is wrong.Blood sugar often drops when fasting as well.
A fast that lasts for a long time can lead to a lack of vitamin.Fasting for weight loss is likely to cause rapid weight loss, but again, this weight is not lost in a healthy manner, and will generally just be gained right back after normal food is eaten again. If one is considering a fast program,it is better to first check with a healthcare professional to be sure it is relatively safe.Young people, the elderly and anyone with a health problem should avoid this method for its possible risks.

答案: C
33.According to the passage, true fasts for weight loss mean losing weight by __________.
A.eating a small meal a day
B.having only liquids
C.taking no exercise

A.fasting causes an upset stomach
B.fasting makes the body short of energy

答案: B
35. What opinion does the writer hold in the passage?
A.Fasting is suitable for the middle-aged people.
B.Exercising is a better way to lose weight.
C.Diet control for weight loss is safer.
