Samuel Langhorne Clemens used the pen name Mark Twain and other pen names during his writing career.Pen names have been used by authors throughout the centuries for some common purposes. But Samuel Clemens didn’t appear to choose Mark Twain for any of those common reasons.Actually,“mark twain” is a term used in steam boat piloting.Clemens’ dream job was to be a pilot of a steam boat,so he used the term as his pen name.He got famous after using it so he kept on using the name Mark Twain.Twain started his career at the newspaper the Hannibal Journal, and it was his work as a riverboat pilot that helped him develop the writer’s voice that so many people know today.
Twain’s narrative (叙述) writing style belongs to what people call Southwestern humor. His life in Hannibal,Missouri introduced him to many of these character types. It was there that he familiarized himself with character types such as slave sellers and riverboat travelers. His style of writing marks the ending of Romanticism and the beginning of Realism in American literature.
Unlike the English writers who came before him,Twain created a much looser narrative style—the way characters spoke sounded like real speech, and no two characters sounded the same. Each had a unique voice that told the readers who was speaking. This American novelist did for literature what Walt Whitman did for poetry.
Mark Twain died on April 21,1910,but the humor in his works still has a great influence on people today.Humor is something the writer began producing during his newspaper days at the Hannibal Journal, where he contributed short, humorous pieces as well as articles to the paper.Interestingly, although Clemens mostly used his pen name Mark Twain when he wrote,he did have another pen name that he used when writing humor:Thomas Jefferson Snodgrass.

They shape our lives in many ways.Often when they get old, torn or fall apart,we’re likely to throw them out or replace them. But one 85-year-old man is devoted to bringing old books back to life.
“I know how to do this.I enjoy doing this,” said Paul Reeder,a book repair hobbyist.
Reeder is changing the face of our textbooks, one book at a time, said Skyview High School Principal,Deb Black.
It all started just three weeks ago.
“There was an article that came out about the bad shape our books were in,” said Black.
Reeder read the article in the newspaper, and he soon appeared in Black’s office. It was the morning of April 5,2016.
“He said,‘I’m here to offer what I think may be a solution,’”Black recalled (回忆).
Reeder has been repairing books since the 1940s.Over the years,he’s worn many hats, yet his interest in book repair remained unchanged.
In the year 1992 when Reeder retired (退休),he went all in.He has repaired books for a number of organizations including the Montana Historical Society and the Billings Public Library.
Skyview’s students are not only thankful for Reeder’s help, but inspired (鼓舞) by his work.
“They have made him thank-you signs and cards.I have one girl who left me a note the other day.She wants to learn to do what Paul does. What he does is a lost art.He has done great things for our kids and for our books,” said Black.
The worn-out books are brought to Reeder on Friday, and in most cases,he’s able to return the books as good as new by the following Monday, according to Black.

Snow White is the story of an Evil (邪恶的) Queen who is jealous (妒忌的) of her beautiful step-daughter and asks a huntsman (猎人) to kill her. After the huntsman is unable to complete the task,Snow White runs throughout the forest and finds a small house of seven dwarfs (小矮人).Hearing that the huntsman didn’t kill the Snow White from her magic mirror, the Evil Queen takes matters into her own hands and decides to find and kill Snow White herself.Pretending to be an old beggar, the Evil Queen gives Snow White a dangerous apple.Snow White falls into a deep sleep after eating the apple and is later woken up by a handsome Prince. They live happily ever after.
In the original Brothers Grimm tale, the above isn’t the end of the story as the Evil Queen unknowingly is invited to the wedding of Snow White and Prince.Once she arrives at Snow White’s big day,hot iron shoes are placed in front of her and she is forced to step into the burning shoes and dance until she drops dead. This ending is much darker than that seen in the 1937 Disney film,Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The Disney film adds a child-like wonder to the tale with the dwarfs each being named and therefore they all have their own personalities:Doc,Grumpy,Happy,Sleepy,Bashful,Sneezy and Dopey. Also in_variation_to the original tale, the Prince and Snow White have met before her eating the apple and Snow White wakes up immediately after the Prince kissed her. They live happily ever after.
The 2012 film Snow White and the Huntsman added something new to the tale. The Huntsman is told to return Snow White to the Evil Queen. If he does that, the Evil Queen will bring his wife back from the dead.Upon realizing that this was an empty promise, the Huntsman decides to teach Snow White how to fight against the Evil Queen.
The moral (寓意) of the story hasn’t changed over time:good will win in the end over evil.

When Hanadi was 4,her school was destroyed in the civil war.Soon after, her family left Syria to live as refugees (难民) in nearby Lebanon.Hanadi joined a school there but was fearful to go.Her experience is not unusual. There are now nearly 25.4 million refugees around the world, according to the United Nations refugee agency.About half are children. Most refugees today are from Syria, where civil war broke out in 2011.
To help kids affected by the situation,Sesame Street and the International Rescue Committee (IRC) have teamed up to create a new version (版本) of Sesame Street especially for Syrian refugees, using Muppets (木偶) as teachers.“We don’t just want to help children learn letters and numbers,” said Sherrie Westin, who works at Sesame Workshop.“We want to help them feel less alone.”
There are more than 150 international versions of Sesame Street. In Germany, kids watch Sesamstrasse, while Mexico has Plaza Sésamo. Each version includes math and spelling lessons. Some characters are the same as in the American version. But other things are different:The Muppets speak the local language and wear local clothes.
The new version will include situations that are familiar to Syrian refugee kids. Some of the Muppets, for example, may have been forced to leave their home.“Kids can watch the Muppets work through big problems the kids are dealing with themselves,” the IRC’s Sarah Smith says.
For the world’s 12 million refugee children, there is little chance to receive good education. And even if kids go to school, they may have fallen behind in their studies.Often, they are traumatized (使受精神创伤) by what they’ve been through.
The new Sesame Street will meet the public in 2019.Sesame Workshop expects that more than 9 million children will be able to watch the show on a TV,computer,or mobile phone.Hanadi may be one of them.

Living abroad is not for everyone.Though it can certainly be a fun and exciting experience,it can also be filled with difficulties. Before you book the plane ticket,it’s a good idea to think carefully about living abroad.
If you’ve lived in the same town for most of your life,a new place full of new food and things can seem like a dream comes true.Your free time will be filled with exploration and sightseeing. You’ll have the opportunity to experience places much older than the United States. However, that feeling will become less and you may find yourself wishing you could just turn on the TV and watch old TV series in English or eat your favorite American meal.
Americans in Europe and South America often find that medical care is both cheaper and easier to get than in the United States. For example, everyone can get a dental (牙齿的) checkup for only around $20 in Turkey. However, you may be disappointed by the lack of familiar medicines. And you may not be able to read the instructions.
The work that the ordinary Americans can do abroad usually pays better than what the ordinary locals do.A full-time teaching job in Ukraine, for example, can help you live a very rich life. However,if you become bored with your position, other job choices are somewhat limited unless you speak the local language as well as English. Moreover, you will probably find that some benefits don’t exist for foreigners.
When you live abroad, opportunities for international travel increase greatly. You may be able to take a day trip across the border from your apartment in Budapest to a concert in Vienna or take a boat to Montevideo for a night out after work in Buenos Aires. However, your money may not allow especially comfortable travel and you may have to stay in inexpensive hotels, cook your own food and take long-distance land transportation.

The number of people in the US without a home is down from one year ago.The total is nearly 550,000,about 3% lower than last year. The number comes from the Department of Housing and Urban Development. The information comes after a report from the United Nations that homelessness is “spreading” worldwide. The report asked governments around the world to terminate homelessness by 2030 so that no one would have to live on the streets.
The UN last did a study on he world’s homeless population 11 years ago.At that time,it estimated (估计) the total at 100 million. But the UN said the number is likely much higher today. It estimates that 100 million children alone are now without a home.
Recently,in the city of Mosul,Iraq, the US Department of Housing and Urban Development measured (统计) homelessness on a single night. In January, thousands of volunteers spread out across the country. They counted a total of 549,922 homeless people. That is down 14% from six years ago.Still, the government reported increased homelessness in the cities of Los Angeles,Dallas,Seattle and Washington,D C Officials thought higher housing prices are responsible for the increase.
Leilani Farha, the top UN official on housing, said homelessness is an issue of life-and-death importance.“The death rate (死亡率) among homeless people is two to ten times higher than that among the people who are not homeless,” she said.
In the Kenyan capital of Nairobi,250,000 people do not have a place to stay. Many of them are children, and live on the streets. In India, the homeless population is estimated at 78 million.Eleven million of that number are street children.Indonesia’s homeless population is 3 million, including 28,000 in the capital,Jakarta. In Nigeria, the homeless population is estimated at 24 million.

The book is illustrated (作插图) by Scott Magoon, whose drawings show Rescue working alongside Jessica.“He can pick up the phone to bring it to her if she needs it,” Magoon said.“He can even open doors for her or call for help if she’s in trouble.”

Samuel L.Clemens, also known as Mark Twain, started off his writing career (事业) in 1865 with his big hit story The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County—a story-within-a-story told to a listener by an old California miner. From that day on,the works of the great humorist always had different animals.
Some members of Twain’s literary (文学的) animals were based on real animals, such as the Clemens family’s named pet cats. Some were imaginary, like that celebrated jumping frog.
As a boy in Missouri,he got pleasure from knowing the animals of the woods;in old age,he felt a deep relationship with the animals large and small that he met in his travels. His cats, family dog, horses, donkeys, and calf also won his three daughters’ love at their Hartford home.On March 22,2018,to mark this part of Twain’s personal life,The Mark Twain House & Museum opened a new exhibition (展览),Tails of Twain:How Animals Shaped the Man & His Work. The exhibition was rich with exhibits from the museum’s collections.
The king of the animals in Twain’s world was the cat,“the only creature in heaven or earth or anywhere that don’t have to obey (听从) somebody or other, including the angels.”He was known to be the proud pet parent of 19 cats during his childhood. As an adult, the Clemens home always had a named cat.Even on vacation, the Clemens family borrowed cats from locals to live with them.Dogs were considered second-class pets, but Twain liked them.Twain once wrote an ode (颂诗)to his dead dog Burns:“She lived a quiet harmless life in Hartford...”
In true Twainism, humans were not as loved as the “Higher Animals”.Even the most low-down animal, however, was superior in Twain’s eyes to “the human race.” After all,he did write once “Of all the animals, man is the only one that is cruel.”
