Ⅰ.阅读理解
A
Amy Cuddy,a Harvard psychologist, has devoted her studies to the influence body language that has on your confidence, influence, and finally, success. Her biggest findings center on the powerful effects of positive body language.Positive body language includes things like proper eye contact, active listening, and gestures that show the message you’re trying to express.Studies show that people who use positive body language are more likable (讨人喜欢的),persuasive, and emotionally intelligent. Here’s how it works:
Positive body language changes your attitude.Cuddy found that consciously (有意识地) changing your body language to make it more positive improves your attitude because it has a powerful influence on your body.
It makes you more likable. In a Tufts University study, people watched soundless videos of doctors interacting with their patients.Just by observing the doctors’body language, people were able to guess which doctors ended up getting complained by their patients.Body language plays a big role in how you’re viewed and can be more important than your voice or even what you say.Learning to use positive body language will make people like you and trust you more.
It improves your emotional intelligence.Your ability to effectively communicate your emotions and ideas is central to your emotional intelligence.People whose body language is negative have a destructive effect on those around them.Working to improve your body language has a great effect on your emotional intelligence.
We often think of body language as the result of our attitude or how we feel. This is true, but psychologists have also shown that the opposite is true:changing your body language changes your attitude.
Have you felt the influence from changing your body language? Please click the link below to turn to the comments page and share your thoughts there,so I can learn just as much from you as you do from me.

Experts say that, among young Internet users,it’s not boys who create most web content. The pioneers of the Internet at the moment are the girls.
According to Jenny Baker, whose hobbies are designing icons (图示),most boys just aren’t patient enough for blogging, uploading photographs, and creating their own websites.Jenny posts her pictures on her own website, and believes that most boys don’t often have their own sites. She thinks it’s mainly girls.
And Jenny is right.A study shows that, among Internet users aged 12 to 17,a lot more girls blog than boys (35 percent of girls compared with 20 percent of boys).A lot more girls also work on their own web pages (32 percent of girls compared with 22 percent of boys).Girls are also ahead of boys in working on websites for other people.
Some girls have their own teenage podcasts (播客) which have become very successful and sometimes the creators have their own TV shows too. When asked what they think about the study that shows girls are more active on the web, they say that they’re not surprised because girls are very creative, and sometimes more creative than boys.
Other girls have started interactive (交流的) e-zines with articles written for girls by girls.“Girls from everywhere read our articles, and they ask lots of questions,” they say.“I think girls like to help other people more.” One expert said:“If boys were more interested in helping other people, the numbers would be different.”

When I was at university,I stopped playing sports altogether.I was working too hard, started eating too much, and, worst of all,I started smoking.By the time I was thirty,I was overweight and unfit.
Then one day,I was sitting in the park, smoking a cigarette (香烟).I was watching these guys running. They looked slim, fit and healthy, and some of them were much older than me.When I got home,I looked in the bathroom mirror (镜子) and, well,I suppose I just didn’t like what I saw.At that moment,I decided to stop smoking and change my life. That evening I went running around the park—for ten minutes! Physically,I felt terrible.Everything was hurting: my legs,my chest. But inside,I did feel good about it.
The next evening,I went again.I still only did ten minutes, but I didn’t feel as bad as I did the day before.Within a week,I was running for fifteen minutes, then twenty, and after three weeks I ran for thirty minutes without stopping.Quite soon,I was running longer distances. After six months,I was a runner!

Facial expressions carry meaning that is determined by situations and relationships. For example,in American culture the smile is in general an expression of pleasure.Yet it also has other uses.A woman’s smile at a police officer does not carry the same meaning as the smile she gives to a young child.A smile may show love or politeness. It can also hide true feelings. It often causes confusion (困惑) across cultures. For example, many people in Russia consider smiling at strangers in public to be unusual and even improper.Yet many Americans smile freely at strangers in public places(although this is less common in big cities). Some Russians believe that Americans smile in the wrong places;some Americans believe that Russians don’t smile enough. In Southeast Asian cultures,a smile is frequently used to cover painful feelings.Vietnamese people may tell a sad story but end the story with a smile.
Our faces show emotions (情感),but we should not attempt to “read” people from another culture as we would “read” someone from our own culture. The fact that members of one culture do not express their emotions as openly as members of another do does not mean that they do not experience emotions.Rather, there are cultural differences in the amount of facial expressiveness permitted. For example,in public and in formal situations many Japanese do not show their emotions as freely as Americans do.When with friends,Japanese and Americans seem to show their emotions similarly.
It is difficult to generalize about Americans and facial expressiveness because of personal and cultural differences in the United States.People from certain cultural backgrounds in the United States seem to be more facially expressive than others. The key is to try not to judge people whose ways of showing emotion are different. If we judge according to our own cultural habits,we may make the mistake of “reading” the other person incorrectly.

Are you really frightened of something that can in no way harm you? Entering a small space? Standing on a high place? Snakes? You might just have a phobia.
A phobia is a strong fear of a situation, living thing or even an object. That is a very formal explanation of a phobia, but a person dealing with a phobia attack may be close to uncontrolled fear with a racing heart, shaky legs and quick breath. The person may break out in a cold sweat (汗).They can fear for their life. The word phobia comes from the Greek word for fear.
Phobias most likely affect about ten percent of the population and are usually a little more common in women than men. They can develop anytime, anywhere and can happen to almost anyone.
Some phobias may develop from an unpleasant experience.A person who had a car accident for example may develop a fear of car travel. Some phobias are related to childhood and simply pass away as the child gets older, such as nyctophobia or a fear of darkness. Most adults don’t need a light on to go to sleep! Other people might have photophobia: fear of light!
Some things most people are able to do easily, other people find almost impossible. There are drivers who won’t drive through a tunnel (隧道) even though the tunnel is used by thousands of other drivers each day. They will find some other roads to reach the place they want to go to.
Here are some common phobias: heights— acrophobia; small spaces—claustrophobia; crowded places—agoraphobia; blood— haemophobia; water—hydrophobia.

Benjamin Banneker was a largely self-educated astronomer, author and scientist. This was a very important accomplishment for an African-American living during the American Revolution and the early history of the United States. Many people consider him to be the first African-American scientist.
Benjamin Banneker was born in Baltimore County on November 9,1731.Unlike most black children of his day in America,Benjamin was born a freeman and not a slave. He grew up on his family’s farm where he worked hard even as a child. He helped with the tobacco crops, cut wood, and did all sorts of chores around the farm.
Growing up,Benjamin had little opportunity for school. He did attend a small Quaker school for a time where he discovered an interest in science and mathematics.Even when he couldn’t attend school,Benjamin borrowed many books so he could continue to learn. He became known in the area as an intelligent young man who could fix machines and work out math problems.
Benjamin’s legend (传奇故事) continued to grow when he built his own clock.Clocks were very rare in America at that time. The story goes that Benjamin met a businessman with a watch. He made detailed drawings of the internal (内部的) pieces of the watch and studied how it worked. Then, over several years,Benjamin built a larger version of the watch out of wood, which became his own working clock.
As Benjamin grew older,he began to take an interest in the stars. He read books on astronomy and used math to calculate the movement of the stars. He even accurately predicted an eclipse (日食) of the sun. After the Revolutionary War,Benjamin began to use his skills as a surveyor. He got a job working on surveying Washington,D.C.,the new capital city of the United States.
Benjamin Banneker died on October 9,1806.Although he didn’t see an end to slavery in his lifetime, his life and accomplishments were used as an example by abolitionists to show what a free black man could do.

One Illinois father and his pre-teen son have made a very important agreement.Whenever the son is practicing to stand again after his brain injury left him in a wheelchair, the father will work on his health, too,by working out.
This week,Rick posted pictures online showing off their progress, saying:“He used to be in a coma (昏迷);I used to be a fat guy.Now we’re both recovering.” Reece can now stand for up to 90 minutes at a time, and Rick has lost an impressive 70 pounds.
In May of 2008,when Reece was four,he was in a car accident that left him with a brain injury. He was put on life support, spending four months holed up in a hospital. The youngster has been working on his recovery ever since.
Reece had been making so much progress in his stander that his dad was inspired to make some progress of his own. That was two years ago when Rick realized he needed to lose weight.
Now,whenever Reece is in his stander,Rick is on the treadmill (脚踏车).The two work out about five times a week.Jennifer,Rick’s wife, has even joined in too, resulting in a “pretty important lifestyle change” for the whole family. While Rick and Jennifer’s hope for Reece is that he will one day be able to walk independently,Rick wants to run a half-marathon in the fall.
“Reece is a fighter and has such willpower and determination. It allows us to keep pushing him and keep raising the standard higher,” Rick said.
They also continue through setbacks, including when, two months ago,Reece underwent an 11-hour operation. The young kid even insisted that he didn’t want to take pain medication, leaving his doctor in awe (敬畏之心).
“At the end of the day,our goals for him are just to put him in the best position to achieve anything he puts his mind to,” Rick said.“If he’s willing to do the work,we’ll always be right beside him to support him.”

Ⅱ.阅读理解
If you want to succeed in life, you need to express the proper body language, with or without having to say anything else. You will certainly notice a whole new reaction from people if you use the power of body language.
Relax your shoulders, keep your hands at your sides (never inside your pockets) and breathe slowly.Have a warm, welcoming facial expression as if you look forward to communicating.Depending on the situation, you may smile when appropriate.
Face the other person or your audience and keep eye contact as much as possible throughout the talk.Nodding and tilting (倾斜) your head closer can show that you are listening.
Do not fold (交叉) your arms, look down at the floor or put your hands in your pockets. These can show that you are uninterested. If you have any comments, you can show them in negative but respectful ways like raising your eyebrows.
A lot of your body language can show how confident, interested, bored, angry or nervous you are.Keeping your head up throughout the entire conversation can show that you are very much into the conversation at hand.
You may feel free to use a few hand gestures to emphasize (强调) a point. If you’re enumerating things,it’s better to use each of your fingers as you mention each item to help your audience keep track.
Pacing will help you create more ground if you have a larger crowd to communicate with.It will also show confidence on your part as you think of more things to say.
Be very careful when touching the other person since you are crossing the boundaries(界限) of body language through actual contact.Remember that in body language,it is your body that does the talking for you.

I recently booked tickets to take my children, aged seven and nine,to see The Railway Children at the theatre.Thinking they may get more out of it if they already knew the story,I ordered the book to read to them.I’m slightly ashamed (羞愧的) to say we only managed to read a few parts of the book. While everyone loved the film and the play was excellent,as far as a reading experience goes, for me at least,it was quite hard to stand.
It wasn’t because the language was difficult, but because the writer seemed to use 10 sentences when one would probably work. But,as a book-lover,hoping that my children would read widely,I thought,“Is it important that they read the classics (经典著作)?”
My friend Pandora thinks children’s classics are just for school. She said,“Unless they had great adventure, then they won’t keep the parent or the kid gripped while reading together.”
Another friend of mine Clare believes it is important that her children read the classics and revisit them again when they are older.
Camilla,my sister-in-law,makes a very good point that books like The Railway Children were written in a different period of time with a different lifestyle in mind. She said,“I think the issue is that books are written for people who have less time now, while the classics were people’s entertainment,so the writing had to be long and drawn out.”
Nowadays, children may feel that when they read a book from the past, they have to struggle through a lot of difficult writing, only to find that not much happens. If that’s the case, they might enjoy the books more in simplified versions (简化版) or by having the books read to them as a bedtime story.
“Some people seem to refuse books in simplified versions, but I don’t think there’s anything wrong with reading a classic novel in a simplified version first, and then later in life moving to the full version,” Camilla said.It sounds like excellent advice.

28.What does the underlined word “gripped” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Attracted. B.Disappointed.

答案: A
29.What does Camilla think about books like The Railway Children?
A.They don’t really have much value.
B.They shouldn’t be considered as classics.
C.They’re no longer suitable for today’s kids.
D.They’re really good to entertain today’s people.
解析: 推理判断题。根据第五段的“I think the issue is that books are written for people who have less time now, while the classics were people’s entertainment,so the writing had to be long and drawn out.”可知,Camilla认为经典书籍已经不适合现在的小孩子读了。
答案: C
30.Which of the following would the author most probably agree with?
A. Today’s children shouldn’t read classics.
B.Classics are usually famous for their stories.
C.Today’s kids can read simplified versions of classics.
D.Today’s kids don’t have to read a classic again and again.
解析: 作者观点题。根据末段的“I don’t think there’s anything wrong with reading a classic novel in a simplified version first以及It sounds like excellent advice.”可知,作者认为小孩子可以读简化版的经典书籍。
答案: C
31.What would be the best title of the text?
A.Should today’s kids read classics?
B.Do today’s kids like reading classics?
C.What should today’s kids read in their spare time?

Have you ever wished you could see in the dark as well as an animal? In action movies,we often see characters wearing special glasses that reveal things that can’t be seen in darkness.Everything looks green, but we can see the shapes and outlines clearly. As a matter of fact, this is somewhat similar to the way animals’ night vision (视力) works.
You may have noticed eyeshine in pictures of animals,or seen it for yourself when light hits an animal’s eyes.Dogs, cats, and many other animals have tissue (组织) called the tapetum lucidum in each eye.The purpose of this tissue is to reflect (反射) light deeper into the eye.For many animals,it leads to their excellent night vision, and it helps them hunt.
Different types of animals have different colors of eyeshine. The light reflecting back from the eyes of dogs and cats is likely to be yellow.Rats and birds usually have eyes that shine red.Other animals’ eyes may reflect white, yellow, green,or pink light. In each case, the color is related to the type of cells (细胞) that make up the tapetum lucidum,as well as the chemicals inside the cells.
Eyeshine has the fun_ction of improving animals’ night vision, but humans have found other uses for it.For example, when people are searching for certain types of animals, their eyeshine may be helpful in recognizing or discovering them. Also, eyeshine has inspired humans to invent substances (物质) that reflect light at night.Strips containing this substance are used to warn us of safety risks such as raised parts of roads.Even though humans cannot see so well at night,we have still found ways to benefit from this amazing animal feature.
语篇解读 本文是说明文。动物之所以拥有人类所不能企及的夜视能力主要归功于它们特殊的眼部组织——眼耀。
32.How does the tapetum lucidum help animals’ night vision?
A.It sends out light in the dark.
B.It makes everything appear green.
C.It reflects light back into the eyes.
D.It enables them to see colors at night.
解析: 细节理解题。根据第二段中的“tissue called the tapetum lucidum in each eye.The purpose of this tissue is to reflect light deeper into the eye”可知,动物眼睛里的反光膜(tapetum lucidum)通过反射光线来增强它们的夜视能力。
答案: C

A.They’ve put it to practical uses.
B.They’re using it to protect some animals.
C.They’re trying to include more animal types.
D.They’ve invented special glasses based on it.
解析: 推理判断题。根据最后一段中的humans have found other uses for it以及该段接下来具体列举的事例可知,科学家已经将关于动物眼耀的研究成果投入实际运用当中。
答案: A
35.What is the text mainly about?

参考答案:
Dear Peter,
I am very glad to hear that you will come to China to study for one year. You asked me about the body language which is used in high schools in China. Here are some common examples of body language you may see in a Chinese high school.
Just the same as in the United States, smiling and nodding one’s head are the most commonly used gestures for greeting.Besides this,we make it a rule that when a teacher comes into the classroom we need to stand up and greet him or her.Sometimes,a teacher taps his or her students on the shoulder, which represents encouragement and comfort.
By the way,it is very rare to see hugging or kissing on the cheek in school. So you should avoid these actions in China.
Look forward to your coming.
Yours,
Li Hua
